After working on the 2014 feature film, "Kajaki," Phoebe Katis has launched off her career as a singer-songwriter in a fresh new way. Based in the U.K., Katis has two full-length albums that embody heartfelt stories and accentuate her jazz style through the way she sings and plays. Her most recent album, "It's Ok to Cry," features a group of humble, but compassionate songs encompassing her journey as an independent musician while delivering a level of transparency about her personal hardships. Katis worked with Cory Wong, a profound guitar player from the sounds of Vulfpeck, on producing this album. The two had played previously side-by-side when Wong headlined a tour for his album, "Motivational Music for the Syncopated Soul." Katis is donating all proceeds of her merch from her Bandcamp for the next month to "Black Minds Matter," a charity fund dedicated to making mental health topics relevant and accessible for all black people in the U.K. With Katis' plans to move to Nashville, TN, it will be interesting to see how she will continue to work with the Wong crew and her other industry friends to target a new fanbase found within the states. Nashville-based pop-influenced R&B artist, R.LUM.R, has arisen to a status of popularity in record time. Previously a singer-songwriter playing classical guitar under his nickname Reggie Williams, R.LUM.R was amazed to see the arisen appeal his 2016 single, "Frustrated," which has now surpassed 50 million plays on Spotify alone. In November of 2019, R.LUM.R released his first album, "Surfacing," and has continued to grow attractive from the small Nashville R&B scene to several countries overseas.
Since the rise of COVID-19, R.LUM.R, like many other artists, has stopped his remaining tour plans. Although his plans to conclude his album's first major tour came to a halt, R.LUM.R is looking forward to singing his heart out and connecting with fans at a later date. Meanwhile, R.LUM.R has been hard at work on both professional and personal content. For instance, R.LUM.R has enjoyed watching anime and playing video games for its sense of media culture and community. He demonstrates these same values on a professional level by interacting with his fans, friends, and collaborators on music topics.
R.LUM.R's music offers something for everyone. As an individual, R.LUM.R is thought-provoking and humble to his core.

Couch, originating in Boston, MA, is a soul-funk pop group that makes music for the "soul, mind, and booty!" Two singers, two horn players, and a tight rhythm section come together to deliver power tunes. Melt the Band, a seven-piece rock, jazz fusion, soul band from NYC, have made their mark as a strong up-and-coming college band since the release of their first single, "Sour Candy," back in 2017 while they attended high school. Three years later, the group is still releasing content that blows minds, such as "Shy," their most recent professionally recorded single, and "Waves," a track recorded and produced while the group is separated in the comforts of their quarantined homes. Veronica, as lead singer, has effortless control of her voice while the rest of the band provides an irresistible groove. The arrangements themselves have a way of turning heads. All seven members work together to find how to take their music to the next level, and with each new release, they continue to develop their fanbase and make even further social impact.

During my time at Belmont University, it has become abundantly clear that campus is full of incredible musicians, artists, and groups that are all looking for a way to leave their mark on the industry. Miles Monaco, a dedicated producer currently attending Belmont, is no different. He has shown me as well as many other fans found on and off Belmont's campus that he has the skills as a producer, a creative, and a strategist to make a new kind of impact in his respective industries. But with this also comes Miles' high level of experimentation as he now journeys into sounds often found in alternative, pop, and lo-fi music. With his normal repertoire being a solo-producer, he has worked with various talents such as Mylky, NOIXES, and others.
In this episode of DormInform, we dive into Miles Monaco's perceived impact on his listeners, his most recent single, "waste my time," his previous artist alias, and how he has been handling the national pandemic as a creator.

Nashville-based, Dynamo fuses jazz, rock, and funk with elements of soul and R&B. Formed in late 2012, Dynamo consists of eight core musicians. When they’re not performing or recording in Nashville, the band is on the road, spreading their unique brand of feel-good music to audiences all over the world.
I would like to mention how Dynamo released a collaborative EP consisting of Vulfpeck's Cory Wong and solo artist, Cody Fry. Both songs were written and featured on Cody Fry's album, Flying. You can tell how Dynamo's style and goals as a band have morphed "Want Me Back" and "Better" incredibly.
I spoke with Ryan Connors, one of Dynamo's piano players, about Dynamo's progress in the industry as well as the collaboration with Cody Fry and Cory Wong. Connors is the featured solo on "Better"! He specifies how each band member is from a different state in the United States, and how they ran into Cody Fry when they attended Belmont University.

Soul and funk band from Austin, Texas, Mingo Fishtrap, is made up of Roger Blevins Jr. on Guitar/Lead Vocals, Chip Vayenas on Drums/Vocals, Dane Farnsworth on Organ/Keyboard, Roger Blevins Sr. on Bass, Steve Butts on Trumpet, and Dan Bechdolt on Tenor Saxophone. With their first album releasing in 1997 and now having a total of six albums, Mingo offers a representation of how you are never too old to be a lover of music and perform like you're young. Inspired by country, rock, jazz, R&B, and pop, Mingo never defines themselves under a specific genre, but what kind of music inspires them to keep on playing.
I spoke with Roger Blevins Jr. about how Mingo has made efforts to stay traditional and change their methods to achieve a balance between authentic and financial success.

Canadian electro-soul and hip hop band from Montreal, Quebec, Busty and the Bass, is made up of powerhouse horn and rhythm sections that do much more than accompany two vocalists. Evan Crofton a.k.a. Alistair Blu (vocals, keyboards, synths), Scott Bevins (trumpet), Chris Vincent (trombone), Louis Stein (guitar), Milo Johnson (bass), Eric Haynes (keyboards, piano) and Julian Trivers (drums) rock every show, big or small.
Their music spans across a wide variety of genres represented in singular collections. Their first album, The Glam, consists of an "intro" and "outro" as well as a variety of feelings in between, like straight-forward energetic tunes "The Real" and "Tryna Find Myself" and deep rap/jazz fusion "Right Kind." That album even includes the same song twice. It is apparent that after listening to many of Busty's songs that they emphasize how to insert as many abstract ideas and sounds and merge them together.
I had a chance to speak with Louis Stein about Busty's main initiatives and what impact they hope to achieve by writing and performing as a group. Additionally, I mentioned to Stein how randomization was used on their album, Lift.

Jewish sibling duo Clyde (24) and Gracie (21) Lawrence from NYC have entered the music industry by storm. In 2012, Gracie, the soprano, falsetto singer, and Clyde, the raspy alto and keyboardist, formed the band known as Lawrence (the Band) when they drafted in six of their childhood best friends to join them. Their messages of feeling happy, collaboration, supporting each other through hardship, and connecting with someone one by doing something you love, are apparent through their expression on stage and in the music they arrange and produce.
Discovered for their most popular and renowned song, "Do You Wanna Do Nothing with Me?", on their second album, Breakfast, Lawrence’s melting pot of soul, R&B, jazz, and pop has entered the ring of modern pop. Reaching #6 on the iTunes R&B/Soul charts, and now with their third album, Living Room, released this past September, fans hope to see their success continue while keeping their "homey" vibe.
