This is a segment of our conversation. We spoke about his addiction to meth and how dark his life became and how he had a chance to improve his life and went through rehab. Now he is active at his Church and helps others who are suffering from addiction. We ended by talking about the Islamic view on Jesus. And when he asked me about the "violence in Islam" I explained that that was simply misinformation by the Islamophobia Industry. That there are over 1.7B Muslims worldwide and that many were the victims of violence. I also told him that I believed if Jesus was here with us today that he would be deeply critical of many US policies just as he stood up against the Roman Empire at his time. In fact, he might have been put in a cage or behind a wall.

A Reflection on Islam and Freedom during ICNA Houston's July 4th Dawah Event.
We didn't chose where we were born, when we were born, our names or our own DNA! Yet we think we are free... True freedom lies in worshipping the Creator. In a world with many shackles, worship frees us from being enslaved to our lusts and desires, peer pressure and social pressure, and to transcend our context. Our purpose, our freedom, lies in worshiping Allah!
Millions protested in Sudan and thousands in major cities around the world, today, June 30, 2019, to bring attention to the Sudanese Uprising, which calls for civilian rule, and the Khartoum Massacre of June 3rd when security forces killed 118 people, raped 70, and injured others. Here in Houston, hundreds came out from Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio, to one of the busiest intersections in the US, and demonstrated for hours.
Beto O'Rourke, candidate for US President in 2020 and former Congressman from El Paso, was in Houston for a protest against Family Seperation at the US-Mexico border and children being held in detention centers. I had met him before when he was running against Ted Cruz for Texas Senator in 2018 and heard him speak in DC in 2016. Today I asked him about the Muslim community. This was his response.

This past week his son passed away as a result of a car accident, and he spoke to us about it after the Friday prayer today. He reminded us to be patient, to know that death is inevitable for all of us, and that there is no better use of our time than to guide others to Islam.
