Welcome to the Khwela Womxn Podcast, a podcast for womxn by womxn. At Khwela we believe in the power of womxn to change communities. We also believe in the necessity of creating open spaces to facilitate collaboration and dialogue about the important issues facing young womxn today. In today's episode, we speak with Hellen Matsivisi.

Hellen is a passionate self-driven advocate for women’s rights who has dedicated her career in pursuit of equality for women’s rights. Helen has raised awareness towards the concerns of women politically, socially and economically in deferent parts of Africa since the age of three when she started painting and writing poetry highlighting women’s issues.

Anjola Ogunrombi is currently working as a Lead Learning Designer at 2U Inc, within the GetSmarter short course brand. In this role, she oversees the design and development of pedagogically sound online short courses, created in collaboration with faculty members from leading global universities. During this work, she developed an interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, and is interested in ways to develop and upskill black women and women of colour in predominantly white workplaces. Prior to this, she has worked as a teaching assistant and corporate intelligence analyst.

Anjola holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) and Master of Social Science in International Relations from the University of Cape Town and has a keen interest in African peace and security, and the effect of violence and conflict on women.

Michaela is an HR graduate, duty manager at @once.travel, and healthcare placement representative @ubuntubeds.

Michaela exudes confidence, self-awareness, and a deep affection for others. In Ep: 3 of The Khwela Podcast, she speaks to us on her journey of self- love, healing, and forgiveness and draws from her lived experiences as a young woman navigating life’s ebb and flow and becoming the best version of herself.

August is #womensmonth, which means another opportunity to celebrate and amplify women’s voices and achievements. 🙌🏽🎊🎉

Although women should be celebrated and uplifted every 👏🏽single👏🏽 day👏🏽, the month of August is extra special, 😊as we pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on the 9th August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.

The pass Laws (also known as the Dompass) were a form of internal passport system designed to segregate and control the movement of Black and Brown people in apartheid South Africa.

@nandi_breakfast affectionately known as Nandi, reminds us of the resiliency, tenacity, and courage of the women of 1956. As the founder of @sistahood_sa an NPO located in the vibrant township of Imizamo Yethu Houtbay South Africa.

Sistahood is aimed at empowering young women to reach their full potential through mentorship and personal development programs.

The organization which has been in existence for the past 11 years also provides young women with a safe space away from the temptations of drug abuse and teenage pregnancy.

Nandi is a recognized community leader and a qualified social worker, as well as the recipient of the Excellent Social work award, by the Department of Social Development MEC Albert Fritz.

Nandi describes herself as a rose that grew from the concrete which is Imizamo Yethu and draws her strength from her mother and the many other women in her community.

In our very first episode of The Khwela Podcast, I had a really cool opportunity to chat with Cissy Gundwana. Cissy is one of our 2019 Khwela Alumni. Cissy recently created a video on Tik Tok (sadly, it was banned, because censoring and erasure of important content is real). 

Cissy was born and Cape Town as was later raised by her Grandmother in George, Western Cape. Her name means "to stay put" in the Mandinka language or Mandingo which is a language spoken by the Mandinga people of Northern Guinea Bissau in West Africa. Cissy translates the meaning of her name to being grounded, knowing who you are, and being connected to our roots. 

The meaning and importance of Cissy's name tie in so beautifully with our conversation on race, xenophobia, and colorism in South Africa. 

Inspired by the #BlackLivesMatter uprising, Cissy draws from her lived experiences as a Black woman living through an oppressive system.
