Today’s guest is a Dutch photographer now based in south Africa.
As a young child, she loved to walk in nature to collect shells, stones, and other beautiful items. It became a ritual.
But as she became older and started travelling around the world, she realised that her pockets became “filled with trash instead of treasure”.
After that realisation, she felt driven to combine that ritual with another passion: photography. to show her friends and, later, the world, what was happening.
Her project is called “Plastic ocean”; sculptures made from objects she finds, that provoke an emotional clash between attraction and repulsion.
She is now also developing an interactive workshop where she works with communities around the globe, arranging beach pickups and creating a space where they can make art together.
Like us, she is convinced that being part of the action allows to build personal connections with the issues, and hopes her work can act as a friendly daily reminder to avoid plastic.
We are glad to welcome Thirza Shaap
Today’s guest is from Malahide North Dublin.
As a fashion lover, like many of us, she used to go to fast fashion brands because they are cheap and attractive.
But that all changed when she volunteered in India, in 2013, the same year as the Rana Plaza disaster. Seeing and experiencing the terrible truth behind fast fashion, she became angry and frustrated to be complicit with an industry that caused so much harm.
From there, she felt heartbroken because she couldn’t enjoy fashion without contributing to the problem.
So with a friend, they set out to act.
Two years later, in 2015 NuWardrobe was born, with a mission to share clothes, and ensure every piece of garment in every wardrobe gets the wear and love it deserves.
She’s been listed as one of Ireland's 30 under 30.
She lives by the saying “everything is for sharing”.
We would like to welcome Aisling Byrne.
Today’s guest journey started in early February 2016 with a cigarette box.
It was laying on the side of the road and had been bothering her for several days, so she picked it up and disposed of it in the next trash can.
From then she took the resolution to take a "garbage bag" with her in addition to the dog bag for every walk. With horror she noticed it always filled up...
A lot has happened since then, triggered by the Wallenhorst Environmental Protection Award, which she won in 2017 and 2018. In her active join-in group there are now more than 850 people who collect garbage themselves and/or are interested in environmental issues and want to bring about change.
She is a: teacher, ecowarrior, speaker, as well as a mother
Her mottos are :“EVERYBODY CAN DO SOMETHING!” And “LEAD BY EXAMPLE”.
We would like to welcome, from Wallenhorst Germany, Birgit Schad.
The professional Journey of today’s guest started about a year ago, when she noticed that some environmental issues, such as soil science, were poorly understood. She decided to take it upon herself to communicate those issues more effectively.
She is now:
From Exeter, United Kingdom we are happy to welcome Ema Askew.
Todays’ guest practice “ploggin”: a combination of sport (usually running, biking or swimming) and picking up litter.
By doing so, he proves how a selfish act of running can suddenly become something good for the environment.
His mission is to show people how easy and important it is to contribute, even a little bit, for a better future.
It is ploggin, along with veganism and other healthy habits that allowed him at the age of 53 to run 100 miles (161km) in a week! Something he tried 10 years before and failed.
He is part of the Brooks Run Happy Team 2020 and has also joined the Dopper Wave, promising to ban single-use water bottles from his life
He posts a picture every day on his instagram, let us welcome Paul Waye!
Our next guest lives in Miami. One day she realised she couldn’t fully enjoy her walks on the beach anymore, seeing more and more plastic and trash on the beach and in the oceans.
She became tired of it and began to pick some up. A few weeks later her party of 1 had become a party of 6 then 12 then 20... Now, every clean up includes more than 30 people (sometimes even more than 100!).
She founded cleanmiamibeach, a non profit organisation whose mission is to “keep our community and natural habitats free of garbage and other harmful land pollutants with a focus on single-use plastics.”
Not only do they mobilise the community for weekly beach and wetlands clean up, they are also working with local businesses along with educating and spreading awareness for a better and more sustainable future.
We are happy to present to you Sophie Ringel.
Our guest today is a model turned activist advocating for an eco-friendly lifestyle.
Travelling around the world helped this ocean lover open her eyes on how badly we are treating our planet.
She knew she wanted to change but wasn’t sure how...
So, In 2018, she began with the “Plastic Free July Challenge” along with other small changes in her life and decided to share this journey with her followers.
She now uses her instagram account, along with her amazing website to share tips and resources to help individuals:
-reduce plastic-waste,
-live consciously,
-strengthen love for our planet
We had the pleasure of interviewing Aimee Cabakoff aka sustainableaimee

The story of Andreas Noe aka Thetrashtraveler isn’t a story like most others. He began it to fulfil his recently found purpose: “raising awareness with fun and positivity about plastic pollution and sustainability.”It is this very mission, along with his creative mind, love for nature and adventures that made him quit his stability and his job as a molecular biologist in Germany (with a Master´s degree from the University of Cambridge) to completely change his life around and move into his campervan to collect plastic on beaches of Portugal.Within 160 days he collected 550 kg of trash, produced about 160 video clips and composed a ukulele song to match each topic: Raising awareness with fun and positivity! His moto: “Give a smile and positivity and you can move mountains.”Listen to what he had to say on our podcast to learn more about him, his mission and his message!
