In today's episode, we're turning the spotlight onto a recurring theme in Indian cinema – the portrayal of Pakistani characters as villains. From the high-octane action movies to the dramatic thrillers, Bollywood has often found its antagonist across the border.

But why? What does this say about the narratives we consume and the stories we tell ourselves? Have we run out of better villains?

India bagged 3 Oscar nominations at the 95th Oscar nominations announcement function.

while that is great news, one can't help but wonder about the reasons why RRR did not make it to the other nomination categories?

Is it because the jury members didn't like the movie? Or could it be , that they never understood it, the way it is meant to be?

Fed on typical Hollywood diet, witnessing the difference in story telling style - that is RRR , must be out of syllabus for the jury members isn't it?

Join me in this fascinating topic where I share thoughts on the following:

  1. Oscars is it only for Americans or does it include world cinema?
  2. Diversity and inclusion in the jury voting for these movies has still a long way to go.
  3. The Hollywood texture of movie telling differs from the way the Indian movies are narrated.
  4. Should India change to fit in to Hollywood or retain it's originality?

How many times have you heard the cliche - strong men and weak women? Why strong women and sensitive men?

Patriarchy in Indian society refers to the traditional social system in which men hold dominant power and women are largely relegated to subservient roles.

This is reflected in a wide range of social, economic, and political institutions, from the family to the state.

To fight patriarchy in Indian society, there are several steps that can be taken.

Firstly, it is important to raise awareness about the issue and educate people on the negative effects of patriarchy on both men and women. This can be done through various means such as workshops, seminars, and social media campaigns.

Secondly, there needs to be a concerted effort to change laws and policies that reinforce patriarchal attitudes and practices. This could include measures to promote gender equality in the workplace, such as parental leave and equal pay policies.

Thirdly, it is important to work on changing attitudes and cultural norms that reinforce patriarchal attitudes. This could include promoting positive portrayals of women and girls in media and advertising, as well as encouraging men to challenge and change their own attitudes and behaviors.

Finally, it is important to support and empower women and girls, by providing them with access to education and healthcare, and creating opportunities for them to participate in the economy and political life.

It is important to note that these steps are not mutually exclusive and the effort to fight patriarchy will require the engagement and participation of the whole society.

Join me in this episode where I share the origin story of Patriarchy, the impact on generations and what you can do about it today.?

Bollywood is the informal term popularly used for the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Maharashtra, India.

The term is often used to refer to the whole of Indian cinema; however, it is only a part of the larger Indian film industry, which includes other production centers producing films in multiple languages.

Bollywood films, like Hollywood until recently, have been criticized for a lack of representation of marginalized groups, including women, people from other castes, or color, and people from the LGBTQ+ community.

This lack of representation perpetuate stereotypes and exclude certain groups from being able to see themselves represented on screen. Like there is a ton of talent in the North East of India waiting for some sunshine.

Although in recent years, there have been some efforts to address this issue and increase representation in Bollywood films, but there is still much work to be done.

In this episode I call out for more diverse casting, more nuanced and realistic portrayals of marginalized groups, and more opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers to tell their own stories.

So what happens when a cold relationship gets a high voltage microwave treatment?

It burns ego's and chars sentiments , and maybe permanently damage the contents.

Pakistan FM walked on this path at the UNSC forum, jeopardising his country's future prospects, without half of the country knowing it or understanding the ramifications of his commentary. Clearly, this is not a lone-wolf act, not is it a slip of tongue in a heated debate, this is by design.

On the other hand, when a premier of a country is insulted, no matter what the internal diversity of opinions suggest, the entire nation unites as one, casting all their differences aside.Such is the nature of Indo-Pak geopolitical relations, or tensions, that it now seems, is firmly beyond repair.

So what happens next?

Happy Independence Day. 75 years is a long time and we've covered a lot of lost ground.

However the next 25 years will be the catapult phase. If we aim well, we may hit the target well before time.

In this episode I dive into the 5 pledges made by our honorable Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and

share thoughts on what it means to me at an individual level?

The success of a a macro-level pledge stems from individual micro level efforts - so what can you and me do to contribute towards this success?

I will keep this view spoiler free and neutral discussing only cinematic merits.

Remaking classics is a high risk high return game. Its either a hit or a miss, rarely do we get an in-between experience. Laal singh Chaddha will be viewed by multiple audience segments, so I will share views basis the audience type, so that one can relate better.

Category 1) Indian audiences who have never seen Forest Gump.

Those who have not seen the original may take a liking for the adaptation, since their reference to context will be limited. You may struggle with the PK resemblance a little bit or the mannerisms, but it is, what it is.

Category 2) Indian audiences who have seen Forrest Gump.

Replicating an original cult classic is akin to find water on Mars. Emotions are high and rationale suggests why even bother remaking something which is near perfect?

Yet, if you can wear a neutral hat, switch off Tom Hanks from your mind, chances are you may like the movie, though may not love it cinematically.

Category 3) International audiences with limited understanding of Indian cinema.

I'd recommend you watch it only if you dont recall Forest Gump, however if you are a big fan of the original, then I'd recommend you dont jump straight in to the deep end of the pool. There are tons of local cultural and historical references which might be alien to you, therefore the movie will be less relatable.

I'd get you started gradually with shorts (20mins), like Chutney,Juice,Interior Cafe(easily available on youtube) to get warmed up to Indian artistry at its finest, then gradually make way into mainstream movies.

You may want to tune into the podcast episode : Indian Cinema, A simple introduction for global audiences on my podcast channel The Gyanban Experience for a detailed insight.

I hope this gives you all some insight, but as they say, someone's chicken is somebody's burger!

Art means different things to different people. The idea here is to give you a neutral perspective as best as I could possibly, without clouding your judgement for or otherwise.

Adapting / remaking a cult classic is fraught with danger, yet it needed to be remade to introduce Indian audiences to Forrest Gump , thought the makers of

Lal singh Chaddha! However, the troll army dug out an old tweet, taken out of context mostly, and now have launched a bonafide campaign against the

movie!  Nobody has seen a single frame of the actual movie and they are already dissing it online.

On the other hand if you ahve actually seen the movie and do not like it, that's absolutely fair. As a filmaker they'd want to know where they went wrong?

And as most critics often do, they point out  technical flaws , which becomes the basis of their assessment. the final judgement is of the viewer, whether to

accept it despite it's flaws or reject it, even if there were no flaws.

So in this episode I dive into the mechanics of trolling and understand the motives and business impact of a troll movement. Liking or disliking a movie is a personal choice, imposing it on someone else, is not.

Question: Who is Team India's toughest rival?

Answer: Fatigue.

Here's why:

Playing 5 T20Is with WI

  • Playing 3 ODIs with ZIM
  • Playing 2 T20Is in Asia Cup( potentially & hopefully 4)
  • Playing 3 T20Is with Australia
  • Playing the T20I World Cup in October!

If this is not fatigue, what is?

If you maintain the same team, bonding, belonging, and consistency gets a thumbs up, but breakdown, wear and tear, tiredness, and fatigue kick in. If you chop and change, players are fresh, but you have no core team fabric. What do you do?

Tune in to this episode on the world cup fatigue Team India might be up against.

In a recent development, the Cricket board of Scotland resigned over allegations of institutional racism. While it is easy to point the finger at  someone, it is cathartic to introspect first. Have you not witnessed an irate customer giving a mouthful to the server at a restaurant as he  owned not just the restaurant but also the waiter serving him? Have you not witnessed a domestic helper being yelled at home? There are horror stories about how domestic helpers are mistreated by their employers.

So you've heard about it, know about it, and now you want to do something about it. So, where do you begin? Yes, you guessed it right, it begins with you. At home, at a restaurant, or any other place where you are interacting with someone serving you. How do you change your behavior? What if it is your parent? How do you make them change?

Do you have a school going child? Chances are you have enrolled them for tuition classes. Why?

Because your anxiety says, what they teach at shcool is not enough, your child needs more support.

Your anxiety says, that as a parent, it is your supreme duty to support your child in any which way, so they succeed in their academics.

What's wrong with that you think?

Your anxiety is inducing anxiety in your child while you are paying through your nose for it! And paying as much ₹500 per class with at least 3

classes per week.  For what?

What the tuition teacher does in turn, is your child's homework! The learning never really happens. The cocepts are seldom cleared only

If you surf YouTube, chances are you might have stumbled upon "Reaction Channels". For the uninitiated, Reaction Channels are a rage in the social media circuit and often generate good viewership. Simply put, a Reaction Channel is nothing but a content creator's opinion, and reaction thereof, on the content they watch. It could be a movie trailer, Cricketing moment or a political situation, there are tons of content creators generating terabytes of footage reacting to content.

Pakistan content creators on YouTube have a massive repository of content, to react on, thanks to Indian entertainment and Cricket. Suffice to say Indian entertainment reactions comprise almost 70% of the total reactions, while some focus on news, politics and other serious issues. In a geopolitically sensitive region, there's never a dearth of topics to discuss about.

So in this experience, I share a neutral observation about Pakistani content creators on YouTube, on what they're getting right, and where they miss the mark. I also touch upon the role on News media, and political rhetoricals shaping a nation's sentiment. Overall this is the Indian reaction to the Pakistani reaction on Indian content!

In case you were on some other rock, there is a raging battle between Bollywood and South Indian cinema. The fight is for pan-India business.

Bollywood, caters to a largely Hindi speaking population, primarily based in the upper half of India and South Indian Cinema comprises of Tamil,Malyalam,Telegu and Kannada film industries. War and what can you do about it? Often times, we are crowded in our minds with our immediate realities, responsibilities and remedies. We are micro focused on what challenges us with little regard to what's happening around us at a macro level, other than the occasional rant on school media or a passing conversation in the corridor.

As this invasion and counter-actions thereof develops into a blueprint for some other politicians thinking of similar invasions, they will get smarter and plan differently. That's not all, it will also act as a blueprint for the people of those countries. They too will get smarter, hopefully. For example the people of Russia who are not in alignment with the concept of war, are taking to streets as a mark of protest, thereby inadvertently making a blueprint for people of China, who may not agree to the way their country is being run.

This is not the case with everybody, suffice to say, the majority of people who are not directly impacted by the unfortunate invasion of one country over the other, get on with their lives, only to revisit it at the 9 o'clock news. The counter argument is, what else are they supposed to do? Stop everything and follow the war? There's a family to feed, boss to worry, a job to keep - all immediate priorities and realities. Their world is still spinning.

We alienate ourselves, despite living in a connected society, ironic isn't it?

Join me in this hopefully thought provoking topic of War and You to find out, given the current situation between Russia and Ukraine,Israel and Palestine,India and Pakistan and all other boiling issues, what can a regular person (who is not directly impacted) do something about it.

Yet another Olampik came and yet another went. The expectation as always was to participate and hope to get some medals along the way. And to that effect, it went perfectly to plan. So out came the joyous raptures, social media messages of support from Cricketers to page 3 celebrities, ministers announced. cash awards and houses or land as a reward, fancy videos and catchy jingles flooded our timelines.

Now that the "show" is over, let us all move back into radio silence for the next 3.5 years, when it all begins again.

This has been Team India's story for the last 100 years of participation at the summer Olampiks , with the lone exception of Field Hockey greatness for a few years. Barring that team Gold, India has won one of individual Golds , evert 2 events, i.e once in every 10 years as an average, and if you do the overall math - 35 medals in 24 appearances , which translates to an abysmal 1.45 medals per event.

For a country which boasts of 1.3B population availability of talent should never be a problem, neither should young players, given that 60% of country is below the age of 30 - there is a massive young talent out there. But the results don't reflect true picture. Year on year, event on event, we fail to be at the top consistently.

So, what can be done, differently?

First up, take an Olampik moratorium for 8 years. Develop a next generation team, fix the system, oil the machinery and then present to the world, a world class, world beating team in multiple sporting events. Unless we take a stop-press moment, the same will be on a repeat loop. Join me in this experience, where I discuss what we can do to remove the Olampik amnesia from our system.

For starters, let us learn to pronounce it correctly.

100% success buckets:

  • 27% -> Top Performers Shami Pant Ashwin
  • 18% -> Middle Performers Jadeja Ishant
  • 54% -> Underperformers Kohli Bumrah Pujara Rohit Ajinkya Gill

Team with such success distribution rely on heroics. They wait for the Phoenix to rise from the ashes, they wait for Superman to save the day, they wait for magic to happen, but as it turns out, every day is not a Sunday! If you bet on someone to save your life - who would you chose - a reckless genius or a predictable doctor?

The World Test Championship got its deserved winner Team New Zealand. And as we appreciate the best team it also begs the question to learn why the most touted team to win the title, choked yet again in a major tournament final.? Is it now a psychological issue, is it just an aberration or is this happening simply because of a faulty process?

A vocal captain with a gift of the gab and a massive fan following may ensure that all cameras remain focussed on his expression, eclipsing 10 other in the park. Not a great virtue for a leader. It is increasingly evident that there is a culture disconnect with the team in general. He is almost in a different entitlement league than rest of the mere mortals. Oh Captain!

Glorious uncertainties are the basic fabric of Cricket. So it's not surprising to learn that despite copious amounts of time spent in planning for the World Test Championship, there wasn't a single practice match before the game. Nor was team planning given due consideration, citing abundance of talent to override English conditions.Glorious idiosyncrasies may capture the sentiment better.

As we all know, life is about moving, whether you are arriving or departing.Soon, there will be a victory series around the corner, and all will be forgotten. People also have a short term memory until the next time when shit hits the fan. You stole a pen from a shop. You didn't need to. But you still did it for the teenage rebellious streak in you.

Shoplifting is a crime. So you ought to be punished. But you were never caught in the act, until now.

20 years later, a random footage of the store surfaces to indict you. What do you say in your defence?

That you are a changed person now and shouldn't be either judged or punished something so far back in the past?

Or acknowledge a wrong and accept the punishment which comes your way?

Recent example of Mr Ollie Robinson's racist and misogynicstic tweets, from a decade back surfaced on arguably the best day of his life, debuting

for the English men's national Cricket team. He apologised. He's now suspended and his future is undecided. Waiting 15 years to break in to the

national squad and you find yourself in a hot soup. So what does he do? What do we do as a society? Forgive and forget? Condone and get a

move on ? What if the same method were to be applied for a bigger crime? Would the same logic hold true? I guess not.

The fundamental question is, do we judge our past with present predicament? Or do we let past be where it is ? Will it do justice to those

who have been wronged? Will they suffer in eternity knowing that the perpetrator is leading a normal life while theirs stands ruined? How

will they ever heal if no lessons are taught to the guilty party? Yet, if this logic is applied universally, then there wouldn't be enough courts

to punish 7 billion people. Each one of us , has at some point in time done some mistake. That is what it is a mistake. Some have paid a price

for it instantaneously and for some it's taken years. For some, they paid a price much bigger than the crime and for some, they got away with

despite the enormity of it.

If life isn't perfect, can justice be fair?

In this delicate conversation GBX explores questions around how society defines crime and punishment and the dichotomy of it all.

Should judge history with a lens of modern day sensibilities? Or should history be just a learning exercise to have tighter laws in the future?

We explore both sides of the story and dive in to the deeper spaces of mind.

disorder. I love Taj but someone's Taj is somebody's Tomb, isn't it? Someone's humour is somebody's sarcasm? You could get trolled on almost

anything you say. More so from people who do not understand reference to context, and react on the literal meaning rather than the underlying

message. When does critiquing cross over to become a pointless troll?

In a country of 1.4 billion diverse voices, ideologies, cultures, beliefs, experiences, do you really have the right to say anything and expect

not one to get offended? You do have a right to speak freely, but do you do it any more? And if not, then why not?

Join me in this experience where I share a mindset on  freedom of expression without being judged or ridiculed. Happy Listening!

Jut the other day while watching a potboiler blockbuster Bollywood flick I squirmed at  "Kuttey main tera khoon peejaunga" as the hero shouted at

The world which once cherished India's soft power and growth potential, is now  talking about India and Pakistan problems in the same tone.

In India, there is a strong case of a need to educate parents before we worry about the kids. Don’t we? There are many well-heeled, highly educated, well-travelled, so called liberal progressive minded, parents - who wait at the exit gate of the school to check the marks after every result of assessment is declared, only to then lament publicly, on how the competitive world has no space for a mediocre 98%,  while the kid with their head down walks slowly behind the parent utterly humiliated ,dejected and their confidence wrecked.

What can we do to make the world a better place? I read a poem a long time ago by Carol, and these lines are inspired by them.

Amore is a poem inspired by listening to Martin Carthy's arrangement, which Simon and Garfunkel turned to an epic Canticle/Scarborough Fair mix, it inspired me to pen a few lines of my own. Though originally a medieval English ballad with unknown origins, it revolves around a stranger visiting the town of Scarborough carrying a message of impossible tasks for the lover to perform.Carrying on with the same essence of love and war as a metaphor for what we have and have not, what we miss forever and what we treasure within us. A heart full of memories and a mind full of realities..I wrote these few lines as an ode to soldiers who lost their loved ones, and in some sense, fight the battles outside and within us....
