Colonel William R. Lawley, Jr., flew B-17s over Europe in World War II. In 1944, then-1st Lieutenant Bill Lawley brought his shot up bomber and severely wounded crew home after a fateful mission over Nazi Germany. In a radio call to the control tower, he made the now-legendary comment that he was inbound "with one turnin' and one burnin." This is his Medal of Honor story.

The Focus on Valor Series is introduced by nationally-syndicated radio talk show host First Sergeant Jon-David Wells and is narrated by Colonel Jay Seffern.

David Valadez is a long-time martial artist who currently practices and teaches Aikido. Dave was once an aspirant to the U.S. Olympic Team, and has studied and practiced several different martial arts over the past decades. Dave is also a sheriff's deputy with a major Southern California sheriff's department. We talk about Aikido, law enforcement, and other good stuff. This is Part Two.

There was a technical glitch during recording. There is an abrupt cut-off at the end of Part One, so Part Two will not take up exactly where we left off when the glitch occurred. Dang gremlins.

The United States is under asymmetric attack by a peer adversary.  It's not a cyber attack.  It is much more insidious, much more unusual, and much more effective over time.   It is the mass migration of humanity across the Southwest Border of the United States.  It's being facilitated and paid for by the People's Republic of China in order to destabilize the USA from within and remove it as a strategic geopolitical player on the world stage.  Listen to this episode and let the Colonel know what you think.

The colonel talks about podcasts he listens to, our weak society, fake exercise by Hollywood soy-fed actors, and outlines four steps that you can take to be a stronger member of society.  And, if you are offended by anything the colonel says, he says you "are invited to feast upon a satchel of Richards!"

  1. Quit being afraid.
  2. Get fit.
  3. Do some kind of competition.
  4. Do some kind of martial art.

Do you want to improve something in your life?  In this episode the colonel talks about The One Hour Training Method which utilizes the Marginal Gains Theory.  This theory posits that small, incremental improvements in the little things over a period of time yield exponential results!  The One Hour Training Method can be broken down into segments.  Don't have an extra hour?  How about just ten minutes?  Anyone can set aside ten minutes.  Use that ten minutes to improve one area of your life, in any area you want.  This plan can easily be the "Ten Minute Training Method," too.  This is your time, and it is for you.  Now, get out there and improve!  Go to our website for the free e-Pamphlet!

In the self-defense, tactical firearms, and sometimes in the martial arts communities we hear the term "sheepdog." This is most often in the context that people can be divided into three groups: sheep - most people, wolves - those who prey on people, and sheepdogs - those who protect their people (the sheep) from the human predators (the wolves). But there may be a fourth category - The Ram! Sensei Christopher Hein, owner and chief instructor of Aikido of Fresno and host of the Aikido: Discussed Podcast joins us to talk about The Ram. Chris is an aikido black belt and has trained in BJJ, submission grappling, MMA, and HEMA, as well as firearms. Chris posits this fourth category, The Ram, as one who is capable of violence but does not seek it out as may the sheepdog, but is able to spring into action if and when it is required. Tune in!

Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel James "Maggie" Megellas is considered one of the most highly decorated officers in the history of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division.   Megellas, while a platoon leader in the Battle of the Bulge, single handedly destroyed an enemy tank while leading his platoon in the capture of Herresbach, Belgium.  The tank stood in the way of Megellas's platoon and, after his destruction of the German tank, his platoon went on to capture the town.  Nominated for the Medal of Honor, lack of documentary paperwork at the time caused the award to be downgraded to a Silver Star.  Col Megellas was also the recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross.  In addition to a second Silver Star, Col Megellas was awarded two Bronze Stars with "V" device for valor, and two Purple Hearts, among many other decorations.  A native of Wisconsin, he died in Texas in April 2020 at 103 years of age.

This week we talk with wrestling and football coach Gary Sirkel about the importance of contact sports in the development of mental and physical toughness, personal resilience, and leadership in youth. It is said that hard times create hard men (and women), while soft times create soft men (and women). In the scope of human history, mankind has never had it so easy in terms of raw survival. Are we soft?

Gridiron (American & Canadian) Football, Australian Rules Football, Rugby Football, Ice Hockey, LaCrosse, boxing, wrestling, MMA and other combat sports and martial arts teach invaluable life lessons. Sitting and looking at a device or computer screen is hardly a difficult, challenging, obstacle laden lifestyle, and it is devoid of the capacity to develop "true grit." Our ancestors would laugh at us.

Coach Sirkel is a long-time youth sports coach, and while primarily a football and wrestling coach, he has coached soccer, baseball, and softball. Gary is the married father of four children and is a grandfather. He is a Leadership Coach on the John Maxwell Team and is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

The Colonel lets us know where he's been and then rants about social media, the election, and rants some more about (anti) social media!  The Colonel mentions the Golden Rule and introduces the "Silver Rule" for online engagement.  Listen to what the Colonel has to say!

The Golden Rule: Treat other people as you would want to be treated.

The Silver Rule: Do not say something to someone over the Internet that you would not say to them in person.

Quote of the Week:
"Social Media is not your friend!  It's your exploiter!"
