Bletchley Park Veteran Doris Moss passed away in May 2022 at the age of 99.
She had an amazing life and I was lucky enough to interview her back in 2018.

Losing her husband and now in her 80’s and 90’s wasn’t going to slow Eileen down. She became a champion of Life Long Learning, sat a degree, became the author of multiple books and kept on telling the story of the women of the Filter Room.
I miss my friend, but listening to these recordings reminds me of just how inspiring she was.

Eileen tells us about The Battle of the Bulge, through to VE Day and how she then was asked to show RAF Officers around Breendonk Concentration Camp, something that stayed with her all her life.

I thought I would finish of this week’s AudioMo’s with another interview from The Bletchley Park Podcast.
I’ve been producing the show for nearly 6 years now and during that time I’ve interviewed so many people. Lots of those interviews stand out for me especially the ones with Veterans, but this one has a very special place for me.
During WW2 Gordon Welchman was one of the most important members of staff at Bletchley Park working directly with Alan Turing to design The Bombe Machine but maybe more importantly for Geoffrey’s, he was his grandfather.
I had got to know Geoffrey over a couple of years via Twitter and in 2016 he came to the UK for a flying visit of 48 hours, to see his son graduate and to visit Bletchley Park for the first time. I had the honour to show him around and to be able to take him into his grandfather’s wartime office. I have never seen anyone so affected by a visit and it was wonderful to be able to share that visit with him. The picture I have used today is of Geoffrey sitting at Alan Turing’s desk. The ones in his grandfather’s office were for him only.

In 2017 I interviewed the amazing author Clare Mulley at Bletchley Park. She talks about the last two books, The Spy Who Loved and The Women Who Fly for Hitler, both of which look at women during WW2.
I cannot recommend Clare’s work highly enough; she is simply a brilliant writer. It might be a cliché, but it’s true, you don’t want to put her books down.

When I first started playing guitar, if you had an idea you could sit in front of a tape recorder and record it or maybe even get your Tascam 4 Track out …but these days we have so many ways of capturing things quickly, but do we do anything with them.
Earlier today I was trawling through my studio files looking for a certain track, when I found a whole bunch of things i don't remember recording.
This is the evolution of one, over a couple of years and then nothing till I found it again today … a musical orphan.

Today I had the sad news that Bletchley Park Veteran Jimmy Thirsk died at the weekend at the age of 104.
I was lucky enough to meet Jimmy a few times over the last few years and he was always as sharp as a pin. As a tribute here is an edited version of an interview I recorded with Jimmy and Dr Joel Greenberg back in 2015 at the launch of the Gordon Welshman Exhibition. Jimmy worked with Gordon in the famous Hut 6 during WW2.

74 year's ago today, the 5th of June 1944 at 22:56 GMT, six gliders towed by Halifax bombers took off from RAF Tarrant Rushton.
On board were the 181 men of 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks, who would be the spearhead of the 156,000 who would land on the beaches of Normandy the next morning.
These recordings are of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's two D-Day Speeches, to the men prior to leaving and to occupied Europe the next day. Also the first BBC news report on the morning of June 6th.
We owe our freedom and our very way of life to those servicemen. If you see a Veteran in the next few days, stop, ask to shake their hand and "thank them for their service". It is a very small thing to do, but it means a lot to them. It is the very least you should do.

In the text to yesterday’s AudioMo I mentioned 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, The Ox and Bucks.
At 00:16 on the morning of June 6th, as their Horsa Gliders crashed within yards of their target, they became the first allied forces to land in France and so to start the liberation of Western Europe.
This AudioMo will explain why I am so interested in those brave 181 men.

72 year's ago today, the 5th of June 1944 at 22:56 GMT, six gliders towed by Halifax bombers took off from RAF Tarrant Rushton.
On board were the 181 men of 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks, who would be the spearhead of the 156,000 who would land on the beaches of Normandy the next morning.
These recordings are of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's two D-Day Speeches, to the men prior to leaving and to occupied Europe the next day. Also the first BBC news report on the morning of June 6th.
We owe our freedom and our very way of life to those servicemen. If you see a Veteran in the next few days, stop, ask to shake their hand and "thank them for their service". It is a very small thing to do, but it means a lot to them. It is the very least you should do.

Because it’s Father’s Day in the UK, Here are some of my step-dads favourite tracks.
He played saxophone and clarinet from The age of 13 till he died, 2 years ago, at the age of 92.
He couldn’t go a day without listening to music.

To finish off my look at saving history Here is a package from this month’s Bletchley Park Podcast. It covers the opening of a new WW1 themed exhibit The Road to Bletchley Park.
It was recorded by Katherine Lynch and myself with audio from the exhibit supplied by Elbow Productions. I had a voice over track and a soundtrack that included both music and sound effects, but because the licence for the music only covers the installation at Bletchley Park I had to construct new audio with music in them … basically, I guess you could call it a bit of foley work.

Last year in the run up to the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Sergeant (Retd) Bernard Morgan visited Bletchley Park. He met one of his modern equivalents, Flight Lieutenant Vikki Thorpe. He told us about his work on the British Type X machine and about D-Day and beyond.
Then, now sadly passed, Bletchley Park original trustee Peter Wescombe was on hand to reunite Bernard with “The Beast”
Remember 71 years ago Bernard and over 150,000 others were waiting for dawn.

At the Royal opening at Bletchley Park in 2014 I managed to capture a truly serendipitous & heart-warming conversation between the Architect Janie Price who led the restoration and Jane Fawcett the Hut 6 Veteran who inspired her. Jane was Janie’s tutor in building conservation at the Architectural Association.

I just heard the sad news about Rik Mayall's death at only 56.
I’m of that generation that grew up on Rik’s comedy, but For me it wasn’t The Young Ones, but Kevin Turvey, The Man Behind The Green Door.
So to say goodbye to Rik & thank him for so many laughs, here is one of the greatest cover versions of all time.

After spending a few days last week paying respect to Veteran’s during the commemoration of D-Day, it’s sad that I have heard this story today.
A 92-year-old war veteran had his medals stolen in a distraction burglary on the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
Eleven medals were taken from the man's home in Whetstone, Barnet, north London. The victim served in the Grenadier Guards during World War Two, mainly in Italy and North Africa.

In the text to yesterday’s AudioMo I mentioned 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, The Ox and Bucks.
At 00:16 on the morning of June 6th, as their Horsa Gliders crashed within yards of their target, they became the first allied forces to land in France and so to start the liberation of Western Europe.
This AudioMo will explain why I am so interested in those brave 181 men.

70 year's ago today, the 5th of June 1944 at 22:56 GMT, six gliders towed by Halifax bombers took off from RAF Tarrant Rushton.
On board were the 181 men of 'D' Company, 2nd (Airborne) Battalion, Ox and Bucks, who would be the spearhead of the 156,000 who would land on the beaches of Normandy the next morning.
These recordings are of General Dwight D. Eisenhower's two D-Day Speeches, to the men prior to leaving and to occupied Europe the next day. Also the first BBC news report on the morning of June 6th.
We owe our freedom and our very way of life to those servicemen. If you see a Veteran in the next few days, stop, ask to shake their hand and "thank them for their service". It is a very small thing to do, but it means a lot to them.
It is the very least you should do.

Today, 04/06/2014, a memorial service was held for Captain Jerry Roberts who passed away back in March.
Jerry was one of the last surviving true codebreakers of Bletchley Park and it was an absolute honour for me to have known him.
So here is a short excerpt of a recording I made of Jerry in 2012. He is introduced by Lord Charles Brocket.

One of Northampton's oldest folk duo's who dropped out of public sight in the late 60's, only to (un)fortunately reappear after the turn of the millennium.
For about 4 years my friend Andy Clarke, under his nom de plume of Uncle Andy, produced a Christmas CD each year to give to friends. It grew each year & more people & bands got involved to record both serious & funny covers.
So here is the first of 16 tracks, a sort of Best of Uncle Andy's Christmas Album.
This one from 2008 wasn't a Christmas song but summed up the Banking Crash.
While recording for The Bletchley Park Podcast, i had a little play on the ... as i was to discover ... out of tune piano in the dining room.

It is based around a simple 2 chord change, but this I’ve built up layer by layer, recording & adding a new instrument(s) to it every few days.

Well my musical dislikes could really be described in 3 words Modern Pop Music. I know it’s not aimed at me, so it doesn’t really bother me, but I’m sure Pop Music from the early 60’s right up till the early 80’s was so much better. So instead of playing a piece of music that I don’t like, I will play what I think is a near perfect example of 60’s Pop Music.

Having already picked Pale Blue Eyes a few days ago for a similar topic (or at least one that I sent off in this direction) I guess I had better pick another song as one that never fails to move me.
Tindersticks really know how to write a song that will pull at your emotions. I just love the verse about pumping coins into a pay-phone, just to hear the person on the other end breath because neither of you have anything to say anymore … I guess the mobile phone has just about killed off that heart-break.
