Welcome back to Lounge Hype. Today's topic is Jay Z at The Tunnel. I don't know who was the king at that New York City nightclub, but I know Jay Z was one of the main attractions. He brought excitement due to his performance.
There is a documentary on the tunnel, and I've seen and heard most people say (from the documentary) that Jay Z was the king there. I've seen more video clips on Jay Z at the tunnel more than I have anyone. Maybe they haven't released the rest of them yet.
You can see Jay Z live at the tunnel in 1999 on YouTube. Sometimes you'll see clips that will just say Jay Z live at the tunnel.
Whenever Jay Z would perform at the nightclub, it would be a crowded place. There would be loud cheers from the crowd. The music would be turned up, and Jay Z and his crew would be on the mic rapping with crowd participation. The crowd would rap too. It most certainly sounded as if Jay Z were king. He made the crowd active. He made the crowd move. The behavior of the crowd was more than words for Jay Z.

Welcome back to Lounge Hype. It was 1998 when Aaliyah performed at the tunnel with Timbaland. She performed Are You That Somebody upon its release. The song received critical acclaim from music critics with them praising its offbeat innovative production. In 1999, Aaliyah earned a Grammy award nomination for best female R&B vocal performance for the song. Initially, it was ineligible to chart on the billboard hot 100 mainly because it was an airplay single not commercially reloaded to retail stores. In December 1998, Billboard change it's policy to allow airplay only songs to chart on the Hot 100 and the song eventually peak at number 21.
Another performer that performed at the hip-hop club was rapper Eve. She was live at the Tunnel 2000. Eve performed her single Let's Talk Abouta It featuring Drag On. Some say Eve was hot and smoking at the Tunnel. Some say she was the queen.
The single let's talk about it came from the album Let There Be Eve … Ruff Riders First Lady. Eve had a lot to say in that title. The album was released in 1999. All the songs on the album were written by Eve herself. It sold over 200,000 copies in the first week. The album has sold over 2 million copies and was certified double platinum by the RIAA. Eve became the third female hip-hop artist to have her album peak and number one on the Billboard 200.
When Eve perform Let's Talk About It at the tunnel with Drag On, the crowd was waving their hands and rapping with them.

The tunnel was a hip-hop nightclub in New York City from 1994 to 2001. Aaliyah was raised in Detroit, but she was born a New York City girl. I don't know how she performed at the tunnel with all the stuff that was going on there, but she did it. When Aaliyah performed there with Timbaland, the crowd bounced. She performed her hit Are You That Somebody. From the video clip that I saw of her, I didn't see any trouble.
At clubs, sometimes fights break out and gunshots are fired. I don't know of anyone going to the clubs now that used to go in my hometown, but anyway, at The Tunnel in New York, sometimes there was trouble from what I understand.
When Aaliyah performed at The Tunnel live, nobody seem disappointed. It looked like a moment for enjoyment for the crowd. All I can say is Aaliyah was a brave girl to perform there.

There was an episode of Johnny Gill that aired in 2013 on TVONE. There was also a Johnny Gill “Unsung” Watch Party Premiere at the Savoy Entertainment Center. Singer songwriter Eric Benet was there, actor comedian earthquake was there, singer songwriter Kenny Lattimore was there, there was Program Director Aundrae Russell, and of course Johnny Gill himself was there.
Johnny sang one of his most popular songs titled My, My, My. It was a number one R&B single. It was a hit song with backing vocals performed by After 7 as well as a jazz solo performed by saxophonist Kenny G. The single was the second single from Gill’s second self-titled album which spent two weeks at number one on the US R&B chart and made the number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. In 1991 the song one a Soul Train Award for best R&B Soul Single Male. It's also known to be Johnny Gill signature song.
Johnny Gill sang My, My, My at the Savoy, and the ladies were reaching out for him. One lady said: Oh My God! You're a sexy thing!" The ladies were excited, and they were singing My, My, My with Johnny Gill.

Today's topic: Foreign Exchange
Zoe, bemyfiasco, Ponte, & Nicolay. An R&B electronica hip-hop duo. I found out about them and their album of 2015 titled Tales From the Land of Milk and Honey.
Hello, I am Gail Nobles! Welcome to Lounge Hype. I'm going to talk to you today about the group Foriegn Exchange. The group was formed in 2002 after Nicolay based in the Netherlands and Phonte in North Carolina connected online through okayplayer.com and begin collaborating on music. Their album Connected was released in 2004 and was a showcase for Nicolay’s musical talents as well as an introduction to like-minded little brother affiliates who contributed to the album. The album received strong views and the single Sincere was released with a music video.
The group has several albums 2008 Leave It All Behind, 2010 Authenticity, 2013 Love In Flying Colors, 2015 Tales From the Land of Milk & Honey, 2017 Hide & Seek.
There was a single I enjoyed listening to from Tales From the Land of Milk and Honey album. The single is title Work It ToThe Top. Tales From the Land of Milk and Honey is the fifth studio album by The Foreign Exchange. NPR listed it as one of the top 10 slept-on R&B albums of 2015.

Howard Hewett had a birthday party one day at Xen Lounge. The photograph that you see was taken by Gina Walker. Howard was about 60 then. Today he’s 67.
I still love to hear him sing. I love how he starts a song. That’s when you know something’s coming up. You know you’re about to hear something good. He’ll switch around and hit a high note, and the girls love that. Y’all know how he do. He’s really good live because he can sing.
Howard rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the group Shalamar. The group started in the 70’s. In 1985, Howard left the group to pursue his solo career, but he later returned to the group in 2001.

People will tell you that it’s not about your talent. Then what is it about? Dave Brown is inviting people all over the world to join Indie Night. He wants to see your talent.
According to Dave’s bio, he made his way to Hollywood after receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College. I call him Indie Night - Dave Brown because of the Indie Night Film Festival: Indie Night. It is a weekly film festival that gives artists an opportunity to showcase their films and other new and established filmmakers from all over the globe. It is founded by Dave Brown.
I remember when I first saw a video clip of Dave Brown at Duane Martin’s Xen Lounge. The Lounge was packed with people that night. When I saw Dave & all of the people around him, I thought: Uh Oh! This man has started something.” Then he moved the film festival to the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA.

The Womack Sisters were first known as Ejyptian Queen spelled Ejy instead of Egy. They gave Xen Lounge an outstanding performance once if I’m not mistaken. The Womack Sisters are also the granddaughters of Sam Cooke. The sisters are real true singers.They have great singing talent. They are singing the kind of songs that many of us are missing today. These girls are like their grandfather. They can sing , and it’s three of them. I’ve heard them sing Amazing Grace Acapella. They have that soul sound just like their grandfather.
The Womack Sisters have a song titled “Darling”. (Singing) And now they have a new single titled, “Lost For Words”. (Singing).
Y’all got to hear these girls sing if you haven’t heard them. You can find them on Spotify.com. I love their songs, and I think you will too. I think you’ll love their singing. Gangsta’s Paradise: by Coolio

Today’s topic, Karen Briggs.
In the beginning, I saw a video clip of a woman playing the violin at Xen Lounge and asked, “Who is this woman playing the violin? She’s playing Gangsta’s Paradise any way she wants to. I mean, she could make the violin sound almost like a guitar. I was stunned. Everything you heard of the original rap song and then some as far as music. I said, “Wow!” With the violin, she was adding more to the music as if it were her own. Her name is Karen Briggs.
In the beginning, after watching her perform at Xen Lounge, her name was not known to me. I thought, “I got to find out who that woman is.” I saw the video about seven years ago, and today I just found out what her name is. How did I find out? I just typed in Google Search engine “ female violin player plays Gansta’s Paradise”. I went to Google Images to see if I could recognize her face, and I did.
Xen Lounge is said to be closed now, but there was so much talent in that place. So much that I’m just beginning to find out more about the people I’ve seen perform there. Karen Briggs is one of those people. I was blown away about how she played Gangsta’s Paradise by the rapper Coolio. So blown away, I had to find out more about Karen.
She was born in Manhattan to a family of musicians, Karen Briggs took up the violin at age 12 and committed to playing professionally at age 15. Briggs joined the Virginia Symphony Orchestra while still in college, but grew discontented with performing classical music and left the orchestra after four years. Since then, she has performed predominantly in the jazz and contemporary instrumental genres.
When I first heard Karen Briggs play the violin, I thought, “She plays like a professional”, not knowing she had experience.
When I decided to do a podcast about Karen, I wanted to play a little intro and give an example of how Karen plays the violin. I have the violin in keyboard, but I don’t have the bow to give the sound effect that a violinist has when drawing a bow across the strings. Like I said before, Karen played Gangsta’s Paradise as if the music was her own. I tried to give an example of that by adding something more to the music. I had to create a number of tracks to make up my sound. It was very challenging. I had to listen to the instruments that were played in order to play the music, Gangsta’s Paradise. Then I was able to add a little more of my own tune to the music.

Today’s topic is Marla Gibbs. Remembering her at Xen Lounge Social Club Sundays.
I was looking back at photographer Gina Walker’s photos who has pictures of Marla Gibbs standing with Ian Foxx at Xen Lounge. It’s good to have those memories.
We remember Marla Gibbs as the feisty maid, Florence from the comedy The Jeffersons. The comedy is a sitcom television series that was broadcast on CBS from January 18, 1975 to July 2, 1985, lasting 11 seasons and a total of 253 episodes. The Jeffersons is one of the longest running sitcoms in history.
According to Wikipedia, Marla received five Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021. Speaker Tisha Campbell was there and paid homage to Marla during the ceremony. She unveil the star.
Marla Gibbs also starred in the comedy 227 from 1985 - 1990 as Mary Jenkins. She is not only a great actress but a great singer that co- produced and sang on the theme song. I enjoyed watching Marla on both comedies. She also appeared once on the comedy Martin. It does not matter what character Marla is or what show she is acting on. She is always great and fun to watch. It’s always good to see Marla, and there is a memory of her at Xen Lounge Social Club Sundays.

I want to talk to you about his single titled “Love Can Do”. It’s a very beautiful song. In 2015, Ledet recorded the single which was written and produced by Bernie Herms. On March 6, 2015, Ledet performed the single on a local TV show in Indonesia. Love Can Do was released by Warner Music Indonesia on Aug. 4.

During the time I first heard Will Smith, everybody was rapping back in the 80’s. The radio played a remix of rappers. And when I heard Will Smith’s “Girl’s In the World Ain’t Nothing But Trouble”, I was lost in the story. It was the original 1986 version. Any time a rap song makes you listen, it’s saying something, and Will Smith is a great story telling rapper. That’s the first thing I noticed when I first heard him rap.
Not only that, but I was amazed at Will’s DJ. DJ Jazzy Jeff. I said to myself, “How in the world did he mix jazz with rap? How did he think of that? That’s a unique sound with the beat of a hip hop drum. It sounds just right.” I thought, “Ain’t nobody got that style. Not in rap music.”
Back in the days of the 80’s when rap music was really strong, I said , “I’m going to write Will Smith and his DJ. I’ve got to tell them what I think of their music.” I guess I was about 15.
My mom saw me writing and asked, “Who you writing?”
She didn’t care much about rap music like she did when it first came out. And even if a person was famous, she thought I needed to be careful. That’s just the way my mother was. She saw famous people as people, and she was right. So when my mom asked who I was writing, she knew what I was about to do. And I said, “ Nobody, ma.” I just balled the paper up.
My mom really didn’t care about me writing, but she always made me second guess. She wanted me to think before doing something, and I didn’t think. Not the way she did. Especially, after seeing Will Smith in a picture walking along with one of my classmates at a mall. I was sick. To me, Will was just a friendly guy, and I didn’t know him.
As the years passed, me and my mom had heard on television that Will was going to try out for the Muhammad Ali movie. My mom said, “I know he’s not going to play as Muhammad Ali. He better do a real good job if he’s going to play him.” My mom was on her sick bed at the time.
I thought to myself, “Muhammad Ali was always rhyming and bragging. That’s not hard for Will Smith to do. Some things are already in Will to act out.” You see, I believed in him though he appeared as just comedy.
The Ali movie came out in 2001. That’s the year my mom had passed away. Will Smith had done an awesome job acting as Muhammad Ali. I went to the theater to see the movie., and I was a little sad because my mom didn’t get to see the movie with me. I said to myself, “Mom, Will Smith has done it. He has done a great job.”
In a spiritual sense, I could hear my mom say, “I saw him.”
I left the theater thinking not only is Will Smith a great story telling rapper, but a great actor too.

The topic is about the group Royalty. You’re listening to Lounge Hype. I’m your host, Gail Nobles.
Royalty was an R&B group from the 80’s. There were 3 girls in the group & one guy. In 1985, they released their first single “Super Love\ Are You Happy” on Skin 2 Skin Records. It’s unknown whether or not the single made the charts. I remember the group in the year of 1987, when they released the single “Anyone in Love”. It came from their only album “Rich and Famous” on Warner Bros Records. It was a beautiful song. I never forgot about it.
Royalty appeared on television shows such as “Video Soul” which aired on BET. I remember when they appeared at LA Xen Lounge. I often wondered what happened to the group, and I saw them on Twitter thanking and tagging Tisha & Duane Martin for having them at the Lounge.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see Royalty Perform if they performed. I didn’t live in LA, and I had to follow Xen Lounge on the Internet, and the videos that people posted on YouTube from the lounge. Thanks to the lounge, I found out that the singing group Royalty was still around. It was the year of 2013 when I saw the thanks to Tisha & Duane Martin on Twitter from the group Royalty.
Royalty is very talented group. It is said one of the girls in the group, Keisha wrote the song “Greatest Love of All” (not the one by Whitney Houston) for the singer Gladys Knight, and the theme song for the UPN television series “All of Us”.
There were two other girls. One of them hosted a show, and it is unknown what the other one might be doing. And the guy in the group became an inspirational rapper.

Andrew Gouche is a Grammy award winning producer & gospel bass player. He has performed and recorded with Rev. James Cleveland, Walter & Edwin Hawkins, The Winans & Yolanda Adams just to name a few. Gouche has also worked with non-gospel musicians like MJ, Gladys Knight, & Billy Preston just to name a few. Gouche has worked as Music Director for Chaka Khan and earned a Grammy for his work on Mart Mary’s album “Thankful”. He also impressed Prince who selected him to work on his recordings and tours. It looks like Gouche has really been around. That means he must be really great & talented.

Back in the days of Xen Lounge, I heard of a man named Gee Mack. He’s got the best guitar talent in the world, and that’s today’s topic on Lounge Hype.
Gee Mack is someone that I heard about, and one day I checked out some videos of him that were online. I began to listen to him play guitar. When I heard him play, I heard Jazz and the best sounding Jazz.
According to Mack’s bio, R&B singer Cheryl Lynn offered him the chance to accompany her on tour. He wrote and produced the song “Forever Lover” from the Whispers’ Certified gold album “More The Night”. He has recorded with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Mary J Blige, The Temptations, Charlie Wilson, & LL Cool J just to name a few.
It is said that Gee Mack is the most sought after guitarist of his generation according to his bio. At age 9, he began trumpet lessons at his public elementary school. I say Gee Mack is a musical genius.

Hello! I'm Gail Nobles, and it's time for Lounge R&B. Today's topic is about the Legendary Force M.D.'s. (Theme Song)
The Force MD's is an awesome R&B vocal group that was formed in 1981 in Staten Island, New York. If you know about the Force M.D.'s, you know about their songs such as "Tender Love" and "Love is a House". They were not only about R&B, but they had some old hip hop roots too with a mixture of harmony in their singing. They are very soulful.
I woke up this morning itchin' bad.
I wanted to scratch. I was going mad.
Went to the doctor. Said, "Help me Please".
He just shook his head and said to me.
You're in trouble son. I know for sure. What you
got there ain't no cure. So take this beat. Go home
and scratch, but stay away from me cause it's easy to catch.
That's the kind of rap and singing that the Legendary Force M.D.'s would do. And I would watch their videos and play their songs over and over. "Itchin' For A Scratch" was my favorite. I loved seeing the group imitate Michael Jackson, and Mr. T, and James Brown.
Three of the group's members are resting in peace, but there are remaining members. They are still recording songs and doing a terrific job. Hello! I'm Gail Nobles, and it's time for Lounge R&B. (Podcast Theme)
It is said that the music is dying. And we still have big four record labels. And we have a competitive music industry and one of the more difficult industries to break into. You have to work hard. But we still have live music. That's a blessing. And I have seen lots of people with talent performing at a club or a lounge. Playing live is the way for musicians now-a-days to make a living.
There are different reasons why musicians fail, but if you are a musician, don't give up. You're talent from God was not given for nothing. Keep singing what's real. Keep making real sounds with instruments. Keep singing R&B. It is so needed. We need songs about love like Lionel Richie, "Three Times a Lady". We need songs that uplift like Sam Cooke, "A Change Is Going To Come". We need songs that chastise like Marvin Gaye, "What's Going On". We need real R&B music.

Today I'm singing and remembering Stevie Wonder when he was at the Savoy. One of the songs that he was singing there was "My Cherie Amour". At the Savoy and in concerts, people seem to love to help Stevie sing that song. It's beautiful to hear the crowd sing La La La La together with him. It's lovely as a summer's day.
"My Cherie Amour" is a 1969 soul classic by Motown singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder. When Stevie was singing at the Savoy, the crowd was singing, cheering, and excited. Stevie Wonder was live at The Savoy Entertainment Center for Jonathan De Veaux's birthday. Stevie is known and famous for singing Happy Birthday in his own way. So may times I have seen so may request for him. Mr. Wonder is greatly loved for his music and entertainment.

From Xen Lounge history, I'm thinking of a jazz bassist name Ryan Cross. Ryan produces live shows, and some of you may remember him from Xen Lounge.
According to his bio, he had a passion fro music which was birthed at the age of 8 when he began to study classical cello. At the age of 16, he discovered the acoustic bass and seized the opportunity to study under Ray Brown, one of the most well-known and prolific bass players of our time. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Ryan moved to Los Angeles, California when he received a full scholarship to attend the University of Southern California where he studied under John Clayton. He graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, and his career immediately took flight. He appeared and recorded on over 35 TV shows and movies to date.

I'm singing and remembering Loose Ends at the Savoy Entertainment Center located in the heart of downtown Inglewood, CA.

Now, let's get down to business. Loose Ends is a British R&B Band formed in London in 1980. It’s good to see them perform together. They performed at the Savoy Entertainment Center, and were singing “Hangin’ On A String (Contemplating)” which is the fourth single by the band from their second studio album, So Where Are You?, and was released in February 1985 by Virgin Records. The single went to number one on the US Billboard R&B chart for one week. This particular single is the reason why I remember the group and hearing the single made me love their sound. It was different than any song that I have heard. Loose Ends had a unique style of their own.

According to her bio, at the age of nine, Angel's parents signed her to a modeling agency. She started competing in runway contests. These events also had music and dance performances and would allow Angel to perform famous cover songs. She started to write her own songs and train her vocals as she was always choreographing and taking dance lessons in order to become the complete artists that is needed to be successful in the industry.

Hi, I'm Gail Nobles bringing you Xen Lounge news today. I'm thinking of a soulful singing duo of twin brothers, Todd and Troy Garner. They performed live at Xen Lounge, and one of them was lead vocalist singing a hit song by Teddy Pendergrass "Turn off the Lights". The tune and the music of the song was kept original, and they made it sound so awesome. Xen Lounge is always filled with great sound. It's wonderful to hear the duo of Pullman Porters singing in memory of Teddy Pendergrass, and it's wonderful to have a cheerful crowd that enjoys live music at Xen Lounge.

Jungle Boom is a Xen Lounge tale that I wrote. It is about a man who calls himself Man March X. He envies Duane Martin, the owner of Xen Lounge, and could see great things in him that no one else was really aware of. Not even Duane himself because he was a very content man owning a lounge. Man March X spoke riddles to Duane and overcrowded his lounge with marching men. He disturbed Duane's peaceful day.

Duane Martin is the key holder and could also be the door keeper of Xen Lounge. In lounge business, Duane may fly high like a dove and roar like a lion. He can do many things and could be called many lounge names. Duane is Lion Key because he holds the keys to Xen Lounge.
There are red double doors in studio city California, and today they are opened to anyone who would like to come in. Xen Lounge is full of celebration. You can always make a reservation. It is said that Xen is the best lounge in LA. I'm Gail Nobles. Dine at Xen Lounge today.

Xen Lounge is a place where people get to show off their talent. Big Al decided to skip Talent Tuesday, and he went to Tisha Friday to perform. Oh what a night.

We all know that in the old school days music was music because it had meaning and the words of the songs were about our lives. The songs took a lot of time to write, the music was well put together, and it was not thrown together for a quick dollar.
At Xen Lounge, something hit Tisha Campbell Martin to sing Michael Jackson’s hit song, “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough”. She did a great job in singing and performing it. That lets you know that Tisha has great singing talent, and when a person sings the right songs, those songs prove that a person can sing and feel what they are singing. We can change music all that we want to, but nothing can teach you like those old school jams. This is a Tisha Friday update.

As I ride along on the Xen Lounge train,
I sing and song along but not for the fame.
I see all my celebrities
and all the things I never got to be.
Looking at them is like looking at me
And all of the things I never got to see.....
There is a live show at Xen Lounge, and it's open mic night. It is energy like you have never seen and heard before. I have no doubts about the lounge show potential. In my eyes, Xen is a symbol of opportunity, and in my ears, I hear nothing but great talent....
