The retro set features highlights from his work with synthpop pioneers Yellow Magic Orchestra, some of his best solo material, collaborations with other artists like David Sylvian and Thomas Dolby, and a selection of the many wonderful songs he wrote, arranged or produced for other artists during YMO's "imperial phase" in the early '80s.

In 2021, I kicked off a new tradition for the show: a countdown of my favorite older songs that I discovered for the first time that year, as I began doing deep dives into ’80s Japanese city pop and Italo disco, coming across tons of fantastic tunes I had never heard before. I continued delving into recent releases from Beach House, Big Thief, Animal Collective, Spoon and Sally Shapiro on the show this week, while the retro alternative set was split into three different blocks: one set of classic Japanese city pop tunes from the early and mid-'80s, one set of punk, synthpop and art-pop from the year 1981 (inspired by Pitchfork's Sunday Review of Suburban Lawns' one and only album, released that year), and one set of late '90s trip-hop (or at least some pop tunes clearly indebted to the trip-hop movement!)

I kicked off the first official "new" show (not counting the top 50 discoveries countdown!) of the year by digging deeper into recent releases from Courtney Barnett, Drug Store Romeos, Mitski and Beach House, while the retro alternative set focused on tunes from the year 2012, now officially "retro" as considered by me for the purposes of the show! There's also an additional mini-retro set of '80s Japanese citypop and New Wave, in honor of The Weeknd's sampling of citypop icon Tomoko Aran's classic "Midnight Pretenders" for his "Out of Time" single.
