We are three Blokes who love Linux and trying out new stuff, we thought it would be interesting to share our experience of trying new Linux and BSD distributions and how we found it trying to live with them as our daily driver for up to a Month at a time, by recording a podcast about how we got on.
In this episode of Distrohoppers’ Digest, Dale and Majid dig into two very different Linux experiences: the stripped-down, do-it-yourself world of Void Linux Base ISO and the sleek but opinionated desktop of elementary OS 8.1. Along the way, they also share what they’ve been tinkering with lately, from replacing Pi-hole with Technitium DNS to hopping back to Debian Xfce, plus a few monthly mishaps and surprises that remind us Linux experimentation doesn’t always go to plan.
They also revisit past distro experiences, including Firefox oddities on Zorin OS and a recovery story involving Fedora after CachyOS trouble. The episode wraps with listener feedback, more thoughts on Bodhi and MX Linux-style system rescue options, and the usual appreciation for the tools, people, and open-source projects that keep the Linux community thriving.

Moss:I had a short bout with covid-19 but seem to be over it. I am still having some stomach trouble, but I think that’s related more to problems with blood pressure meds, although I could be wrong about that.
I got two new UPSes and a new keyboard. The UPS story is too long to go into here. The old keyboard, a Fellowes Microban which has served me for years, has a sticking key. I would have to take it completely apart to fix it and I didn’t want to be without a keyboard. FYI, my new Perixx Periboard looks exactly like the Fellowes Microban Natural keyboard, but it just isn’t. ....More

I can actually get rid of the light bleed if I press on the back of my display while holding the front with my thumb. I think I could actually use some clear tape to fix this issue. I got a new laptop in October, it is an Acer Predator Helios 300 - 15.6" 144 Hz IPS - Intel Core i7 11th Gen 11800H (2.30GHz) - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU - 16 GB DDR4 - 1 TB HDD 512 GB PCIe SSD - Windows 10 Home 64-bit - Gaming Laptop (PH315-54-731M). I know it's a mouthful but trust me it's a great laptop and linux works great on it. I have tried a few distros on it including Ubuntu Gnome, Fedora Gnome, Linux Mint, Manjaro Cinnamon, and Pop!_OS. Moss -I have had a rough month with distros. I’ll let Dale talk about his vacation, but it was great having him around for a few days and we got a lot done. All my computers are working, and all have fresh heat paste. More.....
I have told all my sponsors that I am closing my Sponsus. Only one of them has ended his giving. I am very humbled by that. So I contacted the guy who wrote and runs Sponsus. He said he would shut off the connection to Stripe, which should end it. Well, three months later, I'm still getting payments from Stripe.
Really, guys, I don't need the money now. There are a couple guys on mintCast who have an open Patreon, pick one of them.

Moss - I received a used Lenovo T540p from Owen Peery (mintCast audio editor). It arrived with a broken case bottom. I got a replacement Back, and installing it (done by Dale) required removing the keyboard, which refused to cooperate and proceeded to decompose, throwing keycaps around the room. My mother’s estate is nearly settled, now that her house is pending sale. I spent as many days as I could as a substitute teacher in the local schools, but the school term has ended. Moss - I’ve been pretty busy this month, installing lots of distros, to the point where I had to save one for next month’s show. I’ve also been trying to figure out more creative uses for the Yubikey I was given by listener Firecat. I put my stimulus money to use, buying two 128 Gb USB 3.2 sticks from Silicon Power and made one into a Super Ventoy Stick, featuring the most current version of just about every distro I’ve ever used....More

MONTHLY FOIBLES ...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…
Moss - I have gotten comments about my tendency to delete some programs, including LibreOffice, immediately after installation. To me, it makes sense to do it before you run the updates, because some of those programs, especially LibreOffice, are quite large and take up quite a bit of time and space in the updates, and if you remove them first, they don’t update. I know Chris Fisher has mentioned he doesn’t use any office. If you are like that, you may also want to remove CUPS prior to doing updates - or just run Bodhi, which leaves the printing package out altogether. Other things to consider removing include Thunderbird -- again, if you don’t use it. sudo apt-get purge packagename* is all you need....More

Moss - I almost have my new studio set up. I tried a number of distros this month, only to have some of them not allow me to install them on a UEFI system. One installed but would not write GRUB, and gives me a kernel panic error late in Step 1. But I finally got something installed, which you will hear about later this episode.......More

Moss - I’ve had more attempted installations either not run at all or fail due to not being able to write boot. I think the problem is that it is seeing the USB stick as sda instead of sdb, so it doesn’t want to write boot to sdb1 no matter what I do, or another possibility is that the distro being attempted does not use - or see - UEFI. I have, however, been able to fill up all usable partitions on both my machines, although as usual what is on which partition may change at any time.......More

Moss - I completely restructured both my machines, with a 1 Tb SSD in the desktop and a 512 Gb SSD in the laptop, only to have my desktop short its power supply. Replacement and repair is in the works. I’ve also managed to bring my Raspberry Pi 4 online running Ubuntu MATE 20.04, and thought I had everything working fine but then the VPN wouldn’t load correctly. So now I have a new VPN. And then I accidentally blew out the power supply on my desktop......MORE

I’ve been playing with lots of distros, and you’ll probably want to hear my review of the new multiboot system called Ventoy, available on Windows and Linux, which will be part of Episode 337.5 of mintCast, available as a podcast on June 23rd. Ventoy allows me to put as many distros on a single USB stick as will fit, and can also let you format a stick such that you can make changes in the distro and keep them saved on the stick You can also save other files and apps on the stick.........MORE

I installed Ubuntu Cinnamon 19.10 this month, because that’s what we did for the most recent episode of mintCast. I didn’t care for the color scheme, but others on our team did, so if you’re into brown and orange, you may like it. I currently have Mint Cinnamon, KDE neon 20191226, and the new Feren OS, which also came out right around the holidays, on my Kudu test machine. For some reason, my main Mint Mate 19.3 installation on my Galago Pro 2 main machine stopped giving me a taskbar and then stopped giving me a boot, so I did a reinstall of that and also reinstalled Ubuntu Budgie 19.10 and Mint Cinnamon 19.3 just for fun.....More

Moss So it’s a new year. Hope yours is good. As for holiday goodies, an old friend sent me a box full of brand new Lexar NS100 256Gb SSDs.My friend swears that he ordered a somewhat smaller number of them, but that’s his fight with Amazon, not mine. I went whole hog replacing the internal drives in my wife’s T430, my for-sale T430, my Kudu 3, and all the external drives except for my 2Tb spinning metal. I did not change the drives in the Galago Pro, which included a 256 Mb M.2 and a 1 Tb spinning metal drive........More Here

Moss - I once again tried to do my monthly review on Manjaro. I’d gladly do Endeavour OS but Tony has already done that, so I wanted to hear from the other side of the Arch-can-be-easy camp. Once again, I had the issue of upgrades downloading and then the system freezes, and when I rebooted (maybe a re-login would suffice) and started the updates again, it found the downloaded files and installed them. It also does this for any files I choose to install from the software center or AUR. So, no Manjaro this month. A few users in our Telegram group tried to replicate this issue and failed, although I’m pretty sure they were only using a VM, so I will try again for Episode 009 with a new.......More

MONTHLY FOIBLES...wherein we discuss what did and didn’t work for us this month…MossI have been extremely blessed with two new machines, both System76 models, a Galago Pro 2 and a Kudu 3. I now have better machines than I’ve ever owned, and look forward to using the Kudu in reviews starting next month. Both these machines came from listener Jackie Moore in Nashville, who has been supportive of me since I began being a co-hosting mintCast. I have managed to get Linux Mint 19.2, Ubuntu Budgie 19.10, Pearl Desktop 8, Q4OS, and Bodhi 5.0.0 (just yesterday, still have a tweak or two to do) on the Galago Pro, plenty of room but I think I’ll leave it there.
