Eamon hails from Kerry and is doing important work at the grassroots level with New York teams and is passionate about growing the games in the Big Apple.
The 41-year-old moved to New York in 2022. Since then, Eamon says he's been extremely lucky to have witnessed incredible strides in the sport this side of the pond with the senior footballers beating Leitrim last year and the hurlers winning the Connacht League in January.

The hugely popular Friends of Munster annual dinner took place at the New York Athletic Club last week with 300 people packing out the venue to raise valuable funds for the next generation of Munster stars.
Attendees were treated to a very insightful conversation between Munster head coach Graham Rowntree and RTE’s Marie Crowe, while the journalist also spoke to Munster legend Denis Leamy and current Munster fullback Mike Haley. There was also an auction, while the URC trophy was also on display.
Ahead of the dinner, I spoke to Graham Rowntree, Denis Leamy who won two Heineken Cup medals with the province, and Colm McMahon, a former Munster who player who is the head of rugby development at the club.

O Donovan Rossa clinched the New York Ladies Junior Football title recently marking the club’s first piece of silverware since the lady's team was established in 2018.

With dominant displays from forwards, Barbara Ward and Klara O Sullivan, Dermot York’s side ran out comprehensive winners over a young Shannon Gaels team on a score line of 4-15 to 3-6.
Ward notched 2-6 while O Sullivan bagged 1-4 as ODR came out on top in the battle of the Queens-based sides.
Perhaps the loudest cheer of the day came for player and all-round club organizer Amy Brett who had spinal surgery just a few weeks earlier
Brett came on for a cameo appearance for the last minute which lifted the ODR crowd to its feet.
The ODR ladies set up is anchored by a massive social club of nearly 130 girls - many of whom made their presence heard in the Gaelic Park stand for the final.
I caught up with Brett, Captain Lauryn Hollywood and Club Chairperson Mary Egan after the game to get their thoughts.

On this week's podcast Michael speaks to Rory O Donnell who is the secretary of the northeast GAA board which covers the Boston Metropolitan area and states throughout the Northeast/New England area - Timestamps below
We take a look at how the championships are run in the northeast division and compare them to the structure in New York.
For instance, Boston has a finals weekend in mid-August with the winners of each championship going on to represent the division in the USGAA games the following week in Denver. The USGAA covers all GAA boards in America outside of New York.
I also ask Rory if there’s a possibility of the New York senior footballers taking on Boston each year before the Exiles go on the play in the Connacht Championship or if the club winners of the Northeast division could play the county champions from New York at the end of the season.

The Exiles have not seen competitive action since a comprehensive loss to Sligo on April 22 in the Connacht Senior Football Championship Semi-Final. The game came on the heels of a historic victory over Leitrim at Gaelic Park two weeks earlier.

New York v Sligo Preview With Sligo Journalist Gavin Cawley
After New York’s historic win over Leitrim two weeks ago, the Exiles take on Sligo in Markievh Park Saturday in the Connacht Senior Championship semi final.
For New York its now bonus territory while Sligo have come off the back of winning the Division 4 League title and a comprehensive win against London.
New York have traveled with a full squad and there have been no major injuries reported so far – from their exploits against Leitrim.
Sligo journalist Gavin Cawley joins me to preview the game and his shares his expert knowledge on the Yeats Men and thor season so far.
The game throws in at 230 pm Irish time, thats 930 am eastern and the game is being shown live on GAA Go.
The final interview following New York’s historic win over Leitrim is with New York selector Kevin Moriarty.
Kevin is originally from Kerry and is a member of the Rockland club which is based in Rockland County in New York state.
The Rockland club has its own clubhouse and pitches, a rarity for a GAA club in New York.
Kevin chats about the club its facilities and his involvement with New York underage and college teams
And that concluded our post-match interviews following the New York v Leitrim game.

New York created history on Saturday by winning the county’s first-ever game in the Connacht Senior Football Championship, edging Leitrim in a dramatic penalty shootout - the victory was sealed by the right boot of hometown hero Mike Brosnan who rifled the winning penalty home sparking scenes of wild celebrations as an avalanche of New York supporters surged onto the pitch.
I spoke to Shane Carthy after the game who said the win was one of the best moments of his career. Carthy, who won All-Irelands with Dublin in the past, has been commuting from Boston to play with the Empire State and was instrumental in last nights win, getting the equalizing point deep into injury time to send the game to extra time.
Goalkeeper Mick Cunningham, who pulled off a number of inspirational saves also joins us towards the end.

Our last interview in the lead up to the big game Saturday is with New York Manager Johnny McGeeney who I managed to catch for a quick interview last night after training at Gaelic Park.
As you can see in the video, the New York setup is very much a family affair for the McGeeney household as Johnny’s three young kids accompany him to training every Thursday night.
This is McGeeney’s second year in charge of the New York senior team having led St. Barnabas to back-to-back county titles in 2020 and 2021 with all-American-born players – a first for the county.
Throw-in is at 6 p.m. Saturday, that’s 11 p.m. Irish time and the game will be shown live on GAA GO.

Carthy brings a ton of experience to the New York fold being a multiple All-Ireland winner with Dublin and he has also won an All-Ireland club winners medal with his home club St. Vincents.
Today Carthy plays his football with Donegal Boston and interestingly Saturday will not be the first time he togs out in a New York senior jersey, Carthy made his intercounty debut with the Exiles back in 2009 at the age of 17 when New York lost to Mayo. He spent most of his childhood living in New York, which he touches upon in this interview

New York play Leitrim in the opening round of the Connacht Senior Football Championship Saturday with the Exiles looking for their first ever win in the competition having first entered the tournament back in 1999.
Excitement is building in the Big Apple with many pundits believing this is the strongest New York panel in a number of years with new additions including Rob Wharton and Gavin O Brien from Kerry, Eoghan Kerin from Galway, Bill Maher from Tipperary and Shane Carthy from Dublin who is commuting from Boston to hook up with the squad.
Odds on New York pulling off the upset have been slashed from 13/2 into as low as 9/4 with Boyle sports.
One negative for the panel is that they have not played any competitive or challenge games ahead of Saturday, whereas Leitim have just finished a full schedule of Division 4 league games.
In this podcast, Michael interviews Niall Madine who has been one of the top forwards in the county in recent years. Niall has played at inter-county level for County Down and plays with Kerry New York here and also drafts up to Brooklyn Shamrocks.

On this week's podcast, Michael speaks to Paudi Mulvihill, who last week managed the New York Colleges team to their first-ever championship win at -University level when the team captured the Corn Na Mac Leinn Cup in Ireland.
Paidi looks back on the historic win and discusses the importance of the silverware in the development of Gaelic Football in New York – with all of the panel made up of American-born players who came up through the county’s underage ranks.
Paudie’s backroom team was joined by Meath football legend Graham Geraghty for the tournament. Geraghty of course was also involved with the team last year when they were managed by Paddy Curtis, with Paddy being the team’s trainer this year.
I recently visited Dubai and grabbed an interview with Stephen Twomey, the former chairman of the United Arab Emirates County board as well as Dubai Celt's manager Ross Oates.
They both gave him an insight into how the GAA is run in the Middle East so keep an eye out for those interviews next week.

New York has not played competitively at senior intercounty level since 2006 but that will change on Monday when the Exiles take part in the Connacht Senior Hurling League.
New York Hurling Division Chair Richie Hartnett is also the manager of the team and he returns to the show to discuss the county’s preparations ahead of the competition.
Richie gives Michael an insight into how training has been going, the importance of the tournament to hurling’s development in New York and the fundraising effort to finance the trip.
New York play Longford in the quarterfinals Monday at 10 pm eastern -- or 5 pm Irish time -- at the Connacht GAA Air Dome in Mayo. The game will be live-streamed on the Connacht GAA website.
The county mourned the passing of Donegal Club stalwart Donal Gallagher recently, the Killybegs native steered the club to six senior county titles in a managerial career that spanned three decades. We have a story about Donal on our website, TheLongHallPodcast.com that also contains a podcast we did with Donal about two years ago where he discusses how he brought Larry Tompkins to New York in the 1980s during a golden era of football in the Big Apple.

In this week’s podcast, Michael and Johnny sit down with serial entrepreneur and businessman Pat Phelan from Cork -- as part of our #inspiringimmigrant series.
Pat is the co-founder of SISU aesthetic clinics, a doctor-led Irish company that specializes in cosmetic treatments like face fillers and Botox.
Pat established SISU in 2018 with two other cork men – brothers James and Brian Cotter -- and the trio are on a massive expansion campaign in the U.S. where they are looking to open around 200 clinics.
Pat gives us an insight into how the SISU growth plans are going while we also look back on Pat’s incredible career and journey.
His most successful business ventures include Cubic Telecom, a mobile roaming business and Trustev, an e-commerce fraud prevention firm which he sold for $44 million. He lived in Sunnyside and Astoria in Queens for a number of years in the past and has moved to Manhattan to oversee SISU’s expansion.
It wasn’t all uphill for Pat. He was a chef and a butcher in a previous life before he became heavily dependent on alcohol.
He kicked drinking more than 20 years ago and gives us an extremely honest and raw account of his battle with booze and how he transformed his life.

Tim is an Irish whiskey expert and has traveled the globe crafting his trade in the industry and developing Lost Irish.

Tim discusses why Irish whiskey has made a comeback in recent years and why the industry is now booming.
Tim has also co-authored a beautifully produced book called From Barley to Blarney: A Whiskey Lover's Guide to Ireland which documents Ireland's 50 most iconic bars and pubs. Tim and the founders of the famous Dead Rabbit Bar traveled around Ireland to visit each bar featured in the book including some gems like The Long Hall Bar in Dublin and The Castle in Cork.

He is eager for New York to form a senior inter county hurling team, much like the footballers, as well as a development squad to bridge the gap between minor and adult level.

Alan, who is a former Moyle Rovers player, moved to New York from Tipperary last summer and plays with the Brooklyn Shamrocks club.
He was part of the history-making Tipperary team that won a Munster Senior Football Championship in 2020, it was Tipperary’s first win in the competition in 85 years.

Michael took a trip down to the New York Irish Whisky Festival recently where over 1,300 Irish whisky lovers packed into The View at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan.
The festival brought world-class whiskey experts to one spot to promote renowned brands as well as newer brands like Lost Irish and Roe & Co.
At the event, he spoke to Sean Muldoon, the co-organizer of the festival and the co-owner of the famed The Dead Rabbit bar - which has been awarded the title of the "World's Best Bar."
They chat about how the Irish whisky festival came about and why it is such a booming industry while they also discuss the concept behind the Dead Rabbit.
Other topics include the movie The Gangs of New York, which prominently features the Dead Rabbit Irish gang and several books Sean has published via the bar.

On this week’s podcast, Michael speaks to Brendan Fay, a decades-long L G B T activist, filmmaker, public speaker and founder of the hugely popular St Pats For All Parade which takes place every year in Sunnyside and Woodside in Queens.
Brendan was born in Co Kildare and grew up in Drogheda.
He moved to New York in the 1980s – mainly because he felt it was easier for him to come out as a gay man.
However, Brendan soon found out that America too had its own problems with discrimination, which motivated him to join the movement for L G B T rights, same-sex civil marriage, AIDS awareness and human rights.
In the late 1990s, Brendan, a proud Irish man, was arrested several times for attempting to march with a gay rights group at the Fifth Avenue St. Patrick’s Day parade.
In response, he then decided to form his own St. Patrick’s Day parade in Queens that would be welcome to people all backgrounds and sexual orientation – hence the name St Pats For All.
The parade has become a massive event in Queens and appears to be getting bigger every year. In this year’s parade, which was held last Sunday, nearly two dozen politicians and city officials marched including Senator Chuck Schumer, and other city and state lawmakers.
In 2016, Brendan’s L G B T group -- the Lavender and Green Alliance became the first L G B T group to march in the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Fifth Avenue parade.
I spoke to Brendan after the St Pats for All Parade Sunday and he looks back on his life, his struggles coming out and how he established the parade. It’s a truly inspirational interview. It was the first time Brendan wasn’t involved in organizing the event having stepped down as co-chair.

The 26 man panel of all American-born players were aiming to be the first New York team to win the competition – which is the third-tier competition of the Sigerson Cup.
New York lost the semi-final by just a single point, but then they dusted themselves down and won the shield final the following day - The win meant they were the first New York team in history to win silverware at the tournament.

In this week’s podcast we compare how Ireland and New York dealt with the Omicron surge over Christmas.
Johnny traveled back to Ireland for Christmas and he shares his thoughts on the 8 p.m. closing time, the stress people were under to get negative tests for flying and the general attitude people had to the virus and restrictions.
We also compare the bar and hospitality scene between New York and Ireland -- while Johnny gives his predictions for the industry over the next couple of months.
We also touch on crime rates in the city now that Mayor Adams has taken over from Bill de Blasio and how crime impacts businesses here.
With regards to the COVID discussion, our timing was impeccable for this one as Ireland lifted restrictions immediately after we recorded the podcast but we still think the section is very insightful.

Graham Geraghty - Meath GAA Football Legend - With Paddy Curtis New York Colleges & Rangers Manager
One of the greatest players of his generation, Geraghty won plenty of honors including 3 Leinster senior football titles and two All-Ireland senior football medals – including a victory in 1999 where he captained the Royal County to a famous win over Cork.
He also won all-Ireland honors at U21 level and represented Ireland in the International Rules series versus Australia.
The sharpshooting forward was known for his athleticism, versatility, eye for a goal and courting controversy.
Geraghty sat down with us last week while he was in the Big Apple training the New York colleges team who are traveling to Ireland next month to compete in the Corn na Mac Leinn Cup – which is Division 3 in the Universities competition. Geraghty won the same competition with Blanchardstown IT in 2011.
He joined us in The Long Hall to talk about the team's preparation ahead of the competition and his experience training a group of All-American-born GAA players.
We also delve into a host of other GAA topics and look back on Geraghty's hugely successful career where he won a number of honors including two All-Ireland Senior Football titles.
He was joined by fellow Meath man Paddy Curtis who is managing the New York Colleges team and led Rangers to four titles last year including the u21 and Junior B County.

It is a huge opportunity for the World Amateur silver medalist whose world title ambitions took a major blow in July 2019 when he suffered a shock defeat to Bahemnian Tureano Johnson – his sole loss as a pro.
The Ballybofey man (19-1, 14 KOs) has since notched three wins on the bounce and he called out Andrade after his victory against Shane Mosley Jr. in Las Vegas last May.

Réamonn Byrne from The Hard Way Home returns to reflect on his team's attempt to row a 25-foot boat from New York to Ireland over the summer.
Réamonn, Chris McCaffrey and Ryen Cosgro were embarking on a 3000-mile voyage to raise funds for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund Trust.
The journey was plagued by setbacks and the lads had to be pulled ashore to Cape Cod just one week into their initial voyage.
They set sail again in July and appeared to be going well while overcoming more problems - including the boat's rudder getting seriously damaged - but eventually had to end the journey because of a technical failure.
They were about two-thirds of the way to Ireland before eventually getting picked up by a massive oil tanker.
Ray gives Michael a recap on the trials and tribulations of trip, the problems they faced and if they will attempt the feat again.
Ray is now back working at his Chelsea Restaurant in Manhattan, called Worthwild, so the pair also delve into the current state of the New York City hospitality scene and how inflation is just the latest blow to the industry.

Michael attended the opening of the new Shannon Gaels pitch last week and spoke to some of the movers and shakers behind the project including Chairman Robert McDonagh and former Chairman Sean Price.

Shannon Gaels are a Queens-based GAA club and their new pitch - at Frank Golden Park - is located in College Point in Northern Queens.
The pitch is a hugely significant milestone for Gaelic Games since it is only the second full-sized GAA pitch in the five boroughs of New York City besides the Gaelic Park surface in the Bronx.
The project cost $5.2m (€4.48m) and was funded entirely by city funds after Shannon Gaels members helped in the long planning process.
Shannon Gaels advocated for its development for years and were able to convince the city to lease them the ground — and part with the cash — after the club privately developed a smaller, adjacent pitch at the park around three years ago for $2m.

This week Michael chats to fitness trainer and proud Mayo man Seamus Keane to discuss his positive mindset, his road to America and his journey into fitness.
Seamus is well known among the Irish American community in New York and is heavily involved with the Aisling Irish Center in Yonkers.
Seamus actually completed a master’s degree in finance and then had the courage to completely change careers and switch to the fitness industry which better suits his affable personality.
He now runs fitness classes in Long Island City in Queens under the Clann Health banner which he created early last year.
Seamus had only just found his feet in the industry when the pandemic hit and he had to quickly learn how to deliver fitness classes online and get up to speed with social media.
The Irish Times famously covered him streaming fitness classes from the roof of his apartment building in Queens!
The Aisling Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and is hosting a number of 6k runs throughout the city in October to mark the occasion and to raise money for renovation work to its new premises.
Seamus is an ambassador for the run in Queens on Oct. 24 and will be providing training sessions in the lead-up to the run for those who sign up.
It will be another massive event for the Irish American community and if you would like to sign up for Seamus’s 6-week training session to get you in shape for the run you can reach out to Seamus via his Instagram account @clannhealth. There is a link to sign up in his bio.

The Hard Way Home journey is expected to take around 70 days to complete and the team has been plagued by delays due to adverse sailing conditions.

On this week's show we chat about a wonderful charity called the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
The Trust helps Irish families cover the cost of bringing a loved one's remains back home to Ireland.
It was set up by the family of Kevin Bell, a 26-year-old County Down man who was tragically killed in a hit and run accident in the Bronx in 2013.
Irish people at home and abroad have developed a deep affinity with the trust which has repatriated nearly 1,100 remains to date.
I speak to Colin Bell, who is Kevin’s father and a trustee of the charity. He discusses the history of the Trust, how it came about and how it has helped comfort so many grieving families.
I also chat to Cassie Wilkins who is organizing a fundraiser for the Trust this Saturday, May 22nd in Sherwood’s restaurant in Larchmont, Westchester County.
The event, called The Ivory Party, is being organized by Cassie and her friends, Liz Prendergast, Jazz Neary and Anna McNeilis. They are all Irish immigrants living in Woodlawn and Cassie tells me why they decided to put the event together and to raise money for the Trust.

A hugely enjoyable and very insightful show this week where we speak to former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland youth player - Kevin Grogan.
Kevin signed a full-time contract with Man United when he was 15 and was part of the Irish team that won the Under 16 European Championships in 1998.
Kevin was destined for a bright future with Man United but was plagued by a pelvic injury - which ultimately cut his career short and forced him to leave the club a few years later.
He underwent a number of surgeries and attempted comebacks with UCD, Milwall and St Patrick’s Athletic before calling time on his short career.
Kevin talks to us about his time at United, his injury setbacks and the mental struggles of dealing with those disappointments.
Kevin moved to America when he was 27 and carved out a very successful career for himself in coaching and in the business side of the game in New York where he now runs his own private consultancy company called Kevin Grogan Soccer – www.kevingrogansoccer.com.
The company work in sports technology and business development for a number of sports organizations and elite clinics in Japan.

While the New York City parade is canceled again this year there is a huge uptake in the Spar Craic 10k and 5k virtual run that is being held in partnership with the Irish Echo
Jim Frawley, one of the run’s New York Ambassadors is here to give us a preview of that event and how you can take part.
Next, I head to Boston to Mary Sugrue who is the Chief Executive of the Irish American Partnership - the partnership connects Irish and Irish American communities through education and community programs in Ireland.
Their St Patrick's virtual celebration that takes place Monday evening, the 15th of March at 6 pm AND will feature An Taoiseach Micheal Martin, President Micheal D Higgins, actor Cillian Murphy and lots lots more.
Then I dial in with Dublin where Karen Walshe gives us a rundown of a new dedicated online television channel that has been setup for St. Patrick’s week called St. Patrick’s Festival TV - or SPF TV. Karen is the artistic director of the channel which is currently playing round the clock Irish music, poetry, short films and just about everything that can be artistically created for St. Patrick’s Day!
Lastly, we collaborate with Treasa Goodwin-Smyth who is the presenter of The Ireland Calls Radio show. Treasa interviewed New York City Parade Chairman Sean Lane on her show last week and Sean gave Treasa a rundown on some of the virtual events the parade is hosting this year. This week podcast we speak to Michael McNamee, the co-owner of the iconic Mean Fiddler Bar on Times Square that closed last year.
The bar had become a popular haunt for tourists and Irish people living in New York because of its late bar disco theme, loose atmosphere and Irish hospitality.
Michael closed the bar because the landlord was demanding full rent during the pandemic.
He talks to us in depth about the saga and exclusively reveals that he is back in talks with the landlord and the bar might be reopening soon!!
Michael, who is affectionately known as Macker, chats to us openly about the ups and downs of bar ownership, his per severance in turning the Mean Fiddler into a top Irish bar and the lessons he has learned about business and money.
The Dublin native looks back on the hardship bar owners and employees faced over the last year due to COVID and gives us his thoughts on the future of New York City’s bar industry.
While Michael is synonymous with his ownership of The Mean Fiddler, his first ever bar, he also co-owns five other bars in the city, The Three Monkeys, Tanner Smiths, Dutch Fred’s, Vida Verde and Haswells Greens.

On this week’s show, we discuss the controversial move to sell the American Irish Historical Society’s headquarters on Fifth Avenue.
The Society announced the sale of the property in late January - much to the shock of the Irish American Community.
The building, which has been home to the society for decades, is on the market for $52 million and houses a library and research facility
with thousands of rare Irish books and documents. News of the sale has generated headlines from both sides of the Atlantic and the Irish government has described it as a “deeply disappointing development."
Former AIHS Board Chairman Brian McCabe and former AIHS events and marketing coordinator Sophie Colgan join me on this week's show.
Brian and Sophie drafted an online petition recently to stop the sale of the building and appeal for a change in the society’s governance.
It has gained nearly 6,000 signatures.
Sophie also wrote a heartfelt appeal on the Irish Echo to stop the Sale which received widespread praise and elevated the sale to become a major talking point among everyday Irish Americans.
Sophie has just launched her own podcast called NavigatingbNew York where she chats to guests about their professional & personal
journeys in New York City.

In this week’s episode, we speak to Real Estate Broker Shane Boyle who talks to us about the New York City real estate and rental market - and how COVID-19 has impacted prices.
Shane, from Killybegs in Donegal, first came to America in 2008 in a J1 visa before moving permanently to New York City in 2012 to pursue his American Dream.
He initially worked as a bartender before making the move into the real estate game and has never looked back.
Shane currently works as part of Team Carte Blanche at Triplemint and can be contacted through his Instagram handle - @shaneXboyle or on LinkedIn for inquiries.
He says there is tremendous value to be found in the Manhattan real estate market now and around 85% of his clients are first time home buyers. Rent has also plummetted and there are plenty of bargains to be found for value-hunters.

Donal Gallagher managed Donegal Club for 3 decades leading them to 6 New York Senior Football counties.
Affectionately known as -- “The Veteran," Donal was also the man who brought Cork Football legend Larry Tompkins to New York in the 1980s during a golden era for Gaelic football in the Big Apple.
In a remarkable tour in 1987, the Donegal Club traveled to Ireland and beat Cork, Mayo and Laois before drawing with Donegal.
We interviewed Donal last year as part of Larry’s recently released autobiography.
Larry Tompkins move to New York ultimately led to him joining Castlehaven and Cork where he cemented his place among the GAA greats.
In essence, there was no Larry Tompkins story without New York and Donal Gallagher.

With the iconic Mean Fiddler Irish bar on Times Square being the latest bar closure and others only allowed to operate at a mere 25% indoor capacity - we ask if New York City bar and restaurants can survive the cold winter months?
We speak to co. Longford native Cormac McCormack, co-owner of the Pig n Whistle Irish Bar on 36th Street which was shut down in March due to the coronavirus lockdown.
While Cormac re-opened in July, he is considering shutting down again for the winter because his bar – which is situated just two blocks from Madison Square Garden - has lost the vast majority of its customers with most events in the city canceled.
A surge in crime and an uptick in drug-use on the streets has also discouraged some customers from coming into Manhattan.
With foreign tourism non-existent and no guidance coming from city or state officials - the outlook appears bleak for city bar and restaurants.
The Long Hall Pub & Grocery on East 34th Street has remained closed during the shutdown and Johnny, the co-owner gives us an update on the situation and provides some insight into negotiations with his landlord and the risks they face on re-opening.
We also touch on the GAA scene here as Cormac was part of the New York senior football team's backroom staff this year before the game was canceled.
Cormac is also running to raise money for Play Rugby USA this weekend – which puts on rugby programs for underprivileged kids. He chats to us about that and people can donate at PlayRugbyUSA.org
