This week, Ilona asks Steve all about how he finds balance between being a dad to three boys, running two gyms and keeping fit and healthy through it all.

We recorded this in the hopes that it might help some of our community to find that balance too.

We all have busy lives and lots of plates to keep spinning - but when we prioritise ourselves and our own heath and wellbeing, we can show up better for our loved ones and in our work.

I often joke with Eleanor that she is the reason Fitlife exists. But it is largely true. In 2014 she, my sister and Becky convince me to train them in my mom‘s back garden. It sparked something in me to become a personal trainer and start a Boot Camp. 8 years on and she sits opposite me recording this podcast.

We deep dive into the history of Fitlife, what it means to Eleanor and the key to why she’s so incredibly consistent with her workouts (we figured out she is done well over 1000 gym visits).

We also touch on our struggles with grief and how therapy was the answer to navigating this.

Thanks to Eleanor for recording this with me.

I hope you enjoy the listen.

Max is a FitLife Superstar member.

What’s a superstar member? It’s one that lives and breathes the FitLife way. He comes to classes, has a personal trainer, wears the t shirts and recently has started listening to this podcast.

He reached out to me following his listen to episode 9, which was a recording I did when we first went into lockdown in 2020. I did it by myself, in my sons bedroom and gave my life story.

Now Max has his own podcast show ‘9werks radio’ which dives into his true passion - motorsport. So he messaged me to say ‘have you ever thought of being interviewed on your own podcast?’. Which my answer was no, but I was up for it. I was up for it because so much has happened since that recording in 2020, both professionally but mainly personally and I thought it was important to set the record straight after that original episode.

Now it’s not essential, but if you haven’t heard it, you might want to give episode 9 a listen first. We refer to it quite a lot.

Thanks Max for having this idea. It was great to get this off my chest.

This is Jessie.

A successful Personal trainer and class instructor with a London marathon medal round her neck. From the outside, she is thriving.  Ask Jessie though and you’ll get a different answer. She massively suffers from imposter syndrome, something that ordinarily would hold people back from making bold decisions, like leaving a well paid salary job to pursue a self employed career is a courageous step, then attacking that new career with positivity and hard work, whist also taking on the biggest physical challenge ever is something special. But to do all of that whilst constantly battling with self doubt is why this conversation is worth listening to.

Thanks to Jessie for a great episode.

If you want to reach out to Jessie to enquire about 1-1 training with her or any of the team you’ll find her at Jessie@fitlife.co.uk

Gary has had two lives. One as a rockstar, one as an inspirational gym member.

In this episode we will here about Gary’s phenomenal life story. He is one of the most accredited keyboard players that ever lived, working with bands like the Beegees.

A few years ago, he got Guillan-Barre syndrome. A rare disorder in which your body’s immune system attacks your nerves meaning not only was he not able to play the keys, he was paralyzed from the neck down.

This is a must listen!! You’ll hear how his determination and drive have got him back on stage again.

On June 1st 2020 Damien and Andy went out for an evening cycle and neither of them returned. It was a tragedy that rocked the local community.

I’ve wanted to have this conversation with Tracey for ages. Not to talk about the tragedy, which still to this day breaks your heart to think about, but to talk about the life that her husband Damien lived.  There are very few people that I’ve met in my life that embody FITLIFE more than Damien.

My memories of Damien are doing back to back classes at Fitlife, climbing mountains with us, organising cycling events and convincing me to play 5 a side football with him. Not to mention him being the guy I called at 9pm at night when the gym roof was leaking.

I wanted to talk to Tracey to find out what it was that made Damien tick and to inspire us all to live such an active life until the very end.

This conversation will be of particular interest to anyone who knew Damien but also for anyone looking for motivation to be proactive with your life.

Tracey also is very open with how the accident effected her and her family. She is a beautiful person inside and out who’s bravery is out of this world.

Tracey, thank you so much!

I hope you all enjoy the listen.

I first met Maddy when she turned up to the secret bootcamp in 2014. These were the first sessions I did out of my mums back garden before the Fitlife journey began, and so it’s safe to say that Maddy is a real FitLife OG.

Maddy was in good shape. She would perform the exercises well but she wasn’t one of the competitive types that would try to be first to finish or do the most reps. She was happy to be middle of the pack.

So to see Maddy now, competing in powerlifting world championships is way more than impressive. It’s truly inspiring!!

This is a conversation about comfort zones, and how nothing inside of that will give you the type of focus that the fear of getting on a stage in a leotard can bring! You’ll feel inspired to both try something new and to seek a challenge that will test you both physically and mentally.

Thanks to Maddy for being the inspiration she is and giving up her time to share her story.

Enjoy.

In this episode I chat to Molly, our resident nutritionist. This conversation stemmed from a heated debate about calories… Is a calorie really a calorie? Can we actually measure calories in v calories out? Do we absorb calories equally?

We try to figure all this out whilst also undressing topics like calorie labeling in restaurants, ways to track without tracking and what a well balanced day of eating looks like.

Thanks to Molly for giving up her time.

I hope you enjoy.

This is Fraser.

We met in 2010 when we were team mates playing football for AFC Wimbledon.

Fraser retired from Football in his 20’s due to a heart condition that meant regular intense exercise was high risk for heart failure.

With the novelty of being able to have a drink midweek and not have training to wake up to, Fraser’s relationship with alcohol spiralled. He was not an alcoholic, but the negative effects were far out weighing the small release he was feeling when drinking.

In this episode, I discuss openly with Fraser my own issues with alcohol and how he has become a big influence on my own life.

Many thanks to Fraser for taking the time to record this episode.

I hope you enjoy the listen.

If you met her, you’ never think in a million years that this beautiful, confident, bubbly person has demons that led her to be hospitalized for months of her life.

This is an incredible conversation about understanding mental health and eating disorders, something we still know so little about. Katy is so open and honest with her feelings and her experience with an eating disorder.

I encourage you all to listen to this as it will help you better understand what those who are suffering with anorexia or and mental health issue are going through. You may even be able to identify traits in people you know that you could help.

Thanks Katy for being so open.

This episode is with Ashton Josephs.

She walked into FitLife in 2019 following a tragic time in her life. Both of Ashtons parents passed away within weeks of each other,  something someone so young should never have to face. On top of this, her long term relationship had come to an end, so soon after the loss of her parents. Shortly after, she moved to Haddenham, walked into through our front door and has been inspiring us and our members ever since with her infectious thirst for life.

We talk to Ashton about how she says yes to things outside her comfort zone and how this helps her thrive in life after tragedy.

Sometimes you meet people in life that you immediately respect. Iona is one of those people.

I first me Iona in a cafe with her daughter Niamh, who was just a toddler then. I was blown away by her energy and work ethic even in that small conversation about teaching spin.  Since that day she’s taught hundreds of classes at FitLife and thousands more in her career.

More than just a hard worker, Iona is passionate about helping people. This has led her to start her own business which will help support the mind charity so that everyone has access to on demand help when struggling with mental health.

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording.

In January 2022, Jack Shrimpton became the highest grassing personal trainer for a single month in Fitlife history. But what is more impressive is that it isn't his only job.

Jack is a retained fire fighter, meaning when he isn't in the gym training clients, he is on call to save lives. He is without doubt one, if not the hardest worker I know, yet he doesn't think that of himself. He is passionate about what he does and so showing up to work, even when sometimes he has been up all night putting out a house fire, is a non negotiable.

This podcast is about going about your work in the best way possible, without shouting about it. Let your actions do the talking, period.

Thank you Jack for taking time out of your busy schedule to record this.

I hope you enjoy it.

I've known Lisa for 7 years. From the first time she attended a Fitlife bootcamp, she stood out. It was a workout that required mental strength and she outlasted everyone else, completing the workout when almost everyone else was lying out on the floor.

Since that day, I've got to know her really well. She has become a valued instructor with a reputation as a drill sergeant, whilst also creating classes on the timetable that are some of the most popular around.

What I love about Lisa is that she is a DOER! What I mean by that is anything she say's she will do, she does. This conversation covers many topics, from growing a dance school from 4 classes a week to 104, from grief to menopause to triathlons. But the ever present message is to keep showing up and always see it through. Something that we can all learn from.

Thank you to Lisa for sitting down with me to record this podcast, I hope you enjoy it.

We are back with the FitLife podcast after an extended break and we kick things off with a chat to the healthiest person I know…. My wife.

Jess aka Mrs FitLife Has found a perfect balance that follows the 5 principles to lead a long, healthy and happy life. So much so that she doesn’t even realise it’s a thing! We discuss these 5 principles in detail and what Jess does to effortlessly lead a sustainable healthy life.

We often look so deeply into methods to follow, like veganism or calorie counting that we forget what these principles of health actually are.

At the end of this episode we also share stories of the low points of owning a business as a couple.

I hope you enjoy the listen.

In this conversation we revisit episode 22. So if you haven’t heard that episode yet, I’d recommend jumping back to that one first.

Tom, Nigel & I discuss the last 6 months of training that has got us to this point - ready to take on an Iron distance triathlon.
3.8km swim.
180km bike.
42km run.

We discuss the highs and lows of putting your body through such a heavy training plan, what we’ve learned over the last 6 months (around 250  hours of training each) and what our fears/anxieties are about the day itself.

In May 2006, I made my professional debut for Wycombe Wanderers aged 18. I came off the bench to replace Matt Bloomfield.

It is mindblowing to me, that Matt is still playing for Wycombe. But not is he just still playing, he's playing in the Championship. The 6th biggest league in Europe.

In this episode, you'll hear from someone who has been at the height of professionalism for nearly 20 years and  is able to be as fit, as hungry and as eager to prove himseff now at 37 year old as he was when he was 19.

These principals, habits and mindset can be transferred into any walk of life and so this can help anyone who's looking to improve day by day.

Thanks Matty for recording this with me.

I hope you all enjoy.

This is the first ever re-visited podcast episode and it's with good reason.

Back in April 2020 I spoke with Andy. He had just finished Chemotherapy and was about to start radiotherapy on the tumor in his bowl. Unkown at the time if it would ever be curable, he had an unwavering positive attitude and a inner belief that he could over cover this.

This episode is so heart warming. It is incredibly emotional, but for all the good reasons.

A beacon of light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

When my good friend Tom asked me what I thought about attempting an IronMan, I asked why. His reasoning was so strong that I immediately said count me in.

This episode is a conversation between myself, Tom and Nigel. The 3 of us are training to complete a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and a marathon, all in one single sitting.  Whilst most of you may think this is crazy and out of reach for you, then I challenge you to listen to this. In 45 minutes, you may even be tempted to join us....

We explain why we have decided to create our own event, and why we don't need a medal round our neck at the end to prove it.

This is not about fitness, or training. It's about our reasons why.

The Sergio Torres story is remarkable. So remarkable in fact that the story has sold 1000’s as a book publication, which was later turned into a film.

It’s a story of chasing your dreams, believing in yourself and stepping out of your comfort zone. How many times have you heard that said? But I believe only a handful of people have truly walked the walk, and Sergio is number 1 on that list.

I’m blessed to call Sergio a friend and am so happy that he’s agreed to record his story for the Fitlife Podcast.

I’ve known Harry for years. Mutual friends and sporting rivals since 11 years old. He’s now a member of Fitlife and recently saved my life when I pinned myself under the bench press... True story.

He was the first person I knew of who was the same age and lost a parent, when we were just 15 years old. I remember at the time thinking how incomprehensible that was.

18 years later, now a primary school teacher. Harry has become an author, with a children’s book titled ‘Into the dark’. A raw and emotional story of a young boy losing his mum. His motives are to help families deal with grief and to give them hope of finding the light in a dark world.

This isn’t just my favourite podcast recording to date. It’s also one of my favourite conversations I’ve ever had. It’s a conversation I’ve thought about and listened to many times over, I’ve also read the book multiple times, and it’s lead me to re open my grieving of my dad, who I lost aged 21.

I just want to thank Harry for being brave enough to write this book, to come onto the podcast to give us this incredible episode, and for being a member and friend.

When you think of running a marathon, what come to mind? Maybe that you’re not a runner and can’t do it? Maybe that it’s only for the seriously fit and not for you?

These are all things Sophie used to tell herself. She battled with self limiting beliefs that forced her to always ran away from putting herself in vulnerable situations.

This episode is with the lovely Becci Allen. Our very own personal trainer.

Becci ran the London Marathon and then soon after competed on stage as a bikini girl. From the outside looking in, she was the pinnacle of fitness. But the truth is, pushing your body to those extremes can lead to it breaking, and this is what happened to Becci. A long career as an accountant sat at a desk coupled with punishing workouts and the strictest diet you can imagine, her back decided enough was enough, it left Becci bed bound.

This is an inspiring story to remind us of what health and fitness truly is and how we can all learn from our past experiences to build a better life for ourselves to find true happiness.

I hope you enjoy it.

I met Andy through our companies being connected around 18 months ago. We hit it off as we are the same age with similar interests but our bond was made closer when we found out that both our fathers had passed away with Motor neurone disease. We would catch up over the phone or face to face every month, but a few months had passed and I hadn't heard from Andy, so I pinged him an email. A few days later, his response landed in my inbox which shook me deep to my core.

This is by no means a negative episode. After listening to this you'll feel better equipped both mentally and physically to stand up to life's cruel possibilities.

He also has colon cancer.

Laurence is a very popular personal trainer here at FitLife, but his purpose and passion in life is tackle the inactivity and obesity issue in children by changing the way we teach P.E in primary schools.

Laurence shares his story as a promising young footballer who didn't make it because of his self confidence and athletic ability. He used this set back to dedicate his career to specialise in building self confidence by unleashing the inner athlete in every primary school child. He has designed a platform that will revolutionise the relationship we have with exercise and could go as far to beat the inactivity and obesity issue in children today.

Think about the relationship you have with exercise and how that was shaped by your childhood. Do you class yourself as 'not sporty' because you were picked last in P.E? Did the stronger and faster kids knock you down during break time and so you decided that exercise wasn't for you? These experiences are still happening at schools and have a bigger impact on physical activity to that persons life than they realise. But take this from me, Laurence will change this forever.

Enjoy the episode.

Nigel is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. A 56 year old man, Pilates teacher and personal trainer, father of two who is training for the most extreme iron man I have ever heard of!

He’s completed the 3 peaks 11 times, once pushing a man in a wheel chair and once by cycling between the mountains! He has cycled from lands end to John o groats... And back again. Ran from one coast of Great Britain to the other! He’s a man who knows no limits so you wouldn’t be alone if you thought he’s been doing this his whole life. But you’d be wrong. Nigel was late to this endurance party and his story is a fascinating journey of discovering what makes him the happy and positive man he is today.

Adam is one of the fittest guys in the gym. He lifts weights, he runs, spins and crushes hiit/crossfit style workouts.

Adams motives to be as fit and strong as he possibly can are far greater than to just look good or perform at a high level, he wants to be as able bodied as possible.

At 18 months old, Adam had his foot amputated. A critical age for physical development you would excuse Adam if he chose the easy route by ducking away from exercise thoughout his life. However this couldn't be further from the truth. He has probably achieved more with his body than most of us have or will, having a deadlift PB of 150kg and playing golf off of a handicap as low as 4!

Adam is an inspiration to all of us but especially to those who have suffered from injury. His mindset of - focus on what I can do, not what I can't do - is something we should all embrace when the inevitable aches, pains and injuries creep in.

Thanks to Adam for agreeing to recording this podcast. I hope you enjoy it.

It’s hard to believe that not to long ago Mische wasn’t teaching yoga because she felt like a hypocrite. She was battling with her own health and in turn, her mental well-being was being tested.

Her story is unbelievably engaging and so inspiring. For those who know Mische will be as amazed as I was when hearing her story. For those that don’t, you’ll be waiting on her every word to know more.

You can find Mische teaching at FitLife on Wednesday evenings and Sundays.

I hope you enjoy this episode.

Isobel is 19 years old. She is a straight A student, an 100km ultra runner and has just returned from 3 months in Nepal.

You'll find Isobel smashing crazy workouts in the gym here at FitLife but her journey to this point hasn't been straight forward. Isobel battled with an eating disorder at age 14 which resulted in her being to ill to exercise.

This is Isobel's inspiring story of her recovery and how health and fitness has become a passion of hers.

When listening to this episode. I want you to remember that she is JUST 19 YEARS OLD. It is easy to forget that when listening to her speak. I have never met someone so young speak with such depth and maturity.

Thank you Isobel for sharing her story.

The FitLife Podcast - Episode 2.

Louise has been with Fitlife as a client and member since the very beginning. Attending the bootcamps, investing in 1-1 training and being a valued member. Louise is bubbly, energetic, smiley and fun - she is a joy to be around!

Louise revealed something to me last year that shocked me, it was something I never expected from her and I had trouble processing.

It made me realise that anyone can be vulnerable, anyone can be struggling, anyone can hide behind a smile and that unless we ask, how do we know how that person is really!

I want to thank Louise for being so brave for sharing her story with us. You'll find this both moving and inspiring.

Enjoy.
