Our parenting journey has been a bit of a rollercoaster and we’ve learned the hard way how to navigate through some pretty tumultuous times. This podcast is about finding joy even in the midst of darkness and believing that we can find light on the other side, even if the landscape is different to how we expected it to look. We’re going to share stories and conversations along the way, and talk about how we create our best life even when things feel hard. We'd love you to join us.

For months, returning to the podcast has been one of those things I kept thinking about but didn't quite get to. Eventually, with a little celestial peer pressure from my CHANI app, I remembered something I know about myself: action breeds momentum. So I pressed record. And here we are.
If you’re embracing new seasons of your own, you may recognise the mix of reflection, possibility and pressure that can come with change. August can make it feel as though the year is racing away, but there is still time to notice what feels alive and choose a meaningful next step.
In this episode, I share a little of what has been unfolding behind the scenes in 2026 for me and for my family, along with some of the experiments, ideas and glimmers shaping this season.
It’s a conversation about making room for change, following what brings joy and curiosity, and trusting that we don’t need to have the whole path mapped out before we begin.

What really happened behind the scenes this year?
In this special crossover episode, my beautiful biz bestie Mel Daniels, host of The Powerful Content Podcast, and I have an honest and reflective chat about what 2025 looked and felt like for both of us, in business and in life.
We sat down with a list of big-hearted questions to explore what we’ve learned, what we’ve let go of, and what we’re carrying into 2026 with fresh intention.
This isn’t a highlight reel. It’s a real conversation between two friends, navigating the mess, the magic, and the middle bits of business with honesty, a few laughs, and full permission to go deep.

In this honest conversation, I’m joined by Frances Scadden, who knows a thing or two about reinventing your business when things no longer feel in alignment.

In this conversation, Frances and I discussed:

Starting over isn’t easy — whether it’s a career shift, a life transition, or rediscovering who you are after change. It takes courage, vulnerability, and a whole lot of self-compassion.
In this heartfelt conversation, I chat with coach and global citizen Alessia Gandolfo about what it really looks like to begin again — one small, brave step at a time. We talk about embracing uncertainty, trusting your own pace, and how to find purpose when the path ahead feels unclear.
If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s too late to start over (or if you’re strong enough to try), this episode will remind you that courage doesn’t always roar — sometimes, it’s simply the quiet decision to take the next step forward.
In this conversation, Alessia and I discussed:

Are you making great revenue but still wondering, “Where did all the money go?” If your bank account doesn’t reflect your hard work, this one’s for you.
In this episode, I’m flipping the script on the online business world’s obsession with revenue and inviting you to focus on something even more important — profit. I share how easy it is for money to quietly leak out of your business, even when sales are strong, and talk through five sneaky expenses that might be eating into your bottom line, including subscriptions and tools you’re not using, courses you’ve bought but haven’t implemented, discounting your services, upgrading tech too soon and lifestyle leaks that creep into business spending.
I also share real-life examples from my own business, plus a few gentle mindset shifts to help you protect your profit without feeling restricted or deprived.

Let’s talk about that sinking feeling you get when you open up your banking app or accounting software…
Yep, I’ve been there too. Maybe you keep putting off looking at your numbers—business or personal—because it all just feels too much. You’re not alone, my friend. And that’s exactly what we’re unpacking in today’s episode.
We’re diving into the real reasons so many of us (especially heart-led women in business) avoid our finances—and spoiler alert: it’s rarely about the numbers themselves. We’ll explore the stories and fears that might be holding you back, and I’ll share a gentle, doable money ritual that takes just 15 minutes. It’s helped me shift from anxious avoidance to feeling calm, capable, and in control—and I know it can help you too.
If money stuff feels heavy or stressful right now, this episode is your invitation to flip the script and start building a kinder, more empowering relationship with your finances.

Jenny Richardson didn't expect to be diving back into the dating scene in her 40s. Or ever, really.
Jen met her husband Will back in university at 20, and they built a pretty great life with two awesome kids and a couple of cats. Until Will passed away unexpectedly at 46, and the future they'd planned vanished in an instant.
Jen spent a few years healing, raising her girls, and retraining in a new career. Then, at around the 4-year mark, she started wondering what "moving forward" looked like and nervously anticipated the perils of online dating.
With the support of a mentor, devouring books, adapting her coaching skills, and creating systems, Jen tested her dating theories in the real world, figuring out how to find the relationship she craved. Jen now supports her clients to dive into dating with curiosity, confidence, and clarity.

But it’s not all about the changes; it's also about how we handle them. We'll explore strategies for managing uncertainty and share insights I picked up from Ali Hill's keynote speech at The Future of Leadership conference earlier this year.

Sam Dhu is a Psychotherapist & Facilitator of Permission, a Mum to two young girls, and passionate advocate for being radically kind and compassionate to yourself.

Terms like ‘self-compassion’ and ‘self-acceptance’ get used a lot these days. Money can hold so much shame, discomfort and embarrassment for many of us.
Which is interesting. At the end of the day, money is simply an object like a coin or a dollar bill or numbers on a screen. It’s information. But the meaning that we attribute to that money can be SO loaded, can’t it?
We all think about money in different ways, have different beliefs, attitudes and feelings towards money, we have different narratives around money and this is often referred to as our ‘money stories.’ Our money stories can be playing out from our subconscious mind and influencing our decisions without us even realising what they are.
How are your money stories playing out in your life? Have a listen to this episode where I share examples of where your money stories might be driving your financial decisions.

In episode 102, we talked about some really practical strategies that help me feel organised and calm in the busy final months of the year. This time, I want to talk about these final 90 days from a slightly different angle and share five questions I ask myself to maintain momentum in this final stretch of the year. It's not about productivity at all costs, but a gentle approach to working out what's truly important and how I can support myself in this busy period.
Grab a notebook and a pen and have a listen to this short podcast to help you maximise your momentum in the final few months - before you're sitting back relaxing on NYE and contemplating the year that's passed.

Welcome to The Light Seekers’ Lounge. I’m Annie Love and this is episode 101.
My guest today is Amy Bett - she is an eternal optimist, founder of multiple businesses, host of the Lady Without Limits podcast and she seems to have energy to burn - which is lucky, because she is also a wife and Mum to three gorgeous girls.
As you’ll discover in this episode, Amy initially became a business owner out of necessity after her husband suffered a brain injury and she suddenly had to become the sole provider for the family. While her events business appeared to be very successful, Amy said she felt incompetent and ended the business after three years, mainly due to cashflow challenges.
Wanting to get a better understanding of how to manage money led her to Profit First and becoming a Profit First Professional, which means that she is a ninja at helping business owners transform their financial position and reclaim control of their lives. She has now guided over 200 successful students in her Money Mastery online program to set up strong financial foundations, master their mindset and scale their income online.
I’m a big believer that we need to be having more open and transparent conversations about money and I love the work Amy is doing in the world to empower business owners, so it was such a delight to have this conversation with Amy Bett.

Welcome to Episode #100! 🥳
It's been a while since my husband, Ben Love, was on the podcast, so I invited him back to celebrate our 100th episode of The Light Seekers' Lounge.
A lot has changed for us as a family (and the world!) since we last recorded an episode together (episode #4, back in May 2020). We have celebrated a number of milestones this year, but celebrating the exciting, shiny moments doesn't mean there isn't also hard stuff that happens alongside it - so we had a real, raw and honest conversation around how we hold that duality of life and the lessons we've learned over the past few years.
In this conversation, Ben and I discuss:
“If I love us, I have to want us to evolve more than I want us to stay comfortable.” - Chani appAlso mentioned in this episode:

Renowned as one of Australia’s leading personal brand photographers, Fi is passionate about working with female thought-leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners to help elevate their brand and amplify their message in an authentic way, inspiring others to work with them.
I'm a big believe in the power of having beautiful brand photos created, especially as a business owner. I often encourage my clients to invest in branding photography and have personally had three branding shoots, so I really wanted to bring Fi on the podcast to talk about why it's important, especially for women.
In this conversation, Fi and I discuss:
Having experienced all the struggles associated with running a small business, these days Fi is obsessed with helping other women in business show up consistently and build a powerful brand, so they can share their gifts with the world, become more visible online and build a successful business they love – one that brings them the freedom they deserve and desire. She offers mentoring and coaching through Shine, her membership community for women in biz, and her signature course Powerful Branding Bootcamp. Fi also offers in-person workshops and events that offer education on branding, marketing and mindset.
When not working Fi’s favourite pastime is hanging out with her family. She is always dreaming up her next holiday adventure, is on a mission to get through the neverending pile of books next to her bed, believes music has the power to change any mood, and will never refuse a glass of champagne.

Do you know what your core values are?
Understanding our core values, and living in alignment with them, can be so powerful. When we know what's truly important to us, it can help us make decisions, give us more self-trust and confidence, mean that it's easier to plan for the future, as well as giving us a sense of peace and wellbeing.
Where do our core values come from? What are the benefits of knowing our own values? Are they permanent? Find out the answers to all these questions and more in Episode 98.

As we have now come up for air after the very big season of buying, selling and moving house between November 2022 and March 2023, I thought I'd share some of the lessons I learned through the process.
I don't think I've been quite so tired since I had small children! It was a very big job, but I'm grateful that we've found our dream home and can now settle into this next phase of family life.
In this episode, I'll share some behind-the-scenes of the journey from buying a house off-market, to preparing our home for sale, selling at auction and moving into our new home. I'll also share 10 of the life lessons I learned along the way - which are not real estate specific, so hopefully you can take away what's important for you if you're facing your own big project or transition.

In December 2020, in episode 26 of the Mummalove podcast, I had a conversation with my nephew, Tyler Mitchell, and his mum Naomi, about their journey as a family of Tyler coming out as a transgender man. I’m so delighted that it is the most downloaded episode that we’ve ever shared.
In this episode, I’m talking to the now 18 year old Tyler about what has changed for him and in the world over the past two years, all the exciting things he’s looking forward to after leaving school, and how it feels to show up in the world as your true, authentic self.
Everyone has different perspectives to offer the world, and Tyler has shared his perspective as a young Australian, recent high school graduate, a transgender man and a lover of literature. His aim is to leave this world a better place than he found it through advocacy, education and respect.

"Boaboa - pronounced ‘Bow-a-Bow-a’ - is the name given to a real tree—the Baobab—that imparts wisdom to a growing child in a South African garden. This stirring memoir traverses Africa and Australia following the Speer-Jordan family, who fled persecution and poverty in Varniai, Lithuania, to South Africa. The political machinations they witnessed in that time in South Africa changed the women forever in this unusual family. As the story unfolds, Isabella and Franceska’s tenacity and courage surface as they prove to be hardy and, at times, seemingly indestructible with their strong roots."
You can buy Under the Boab Tree through Franceska's website, on Avid Reader, Amazon, and in selected bookstores.

She’s explored everything from quantum physics and neuroscience, to philosophy and eastern traditions, and even qualified as a kundalini yoga teacher.

Claire Devine was born in Toulouse, France and grew up in an art gallery space in Brisbane, Australia. A classical musician and high school teacher, she started painting as a way to pass the evening hours while her handsome Irish husband, Seamus, was away for work.
Claire took a break from her regular work when Seamus became ill and their infant son was diagnosed with partial blindness. This break allowed the family to reprioritise, focus on each other and give energy to Claire’s painting. As popularity for Claire’s work grew, The New Devine quickly evolved from a painting pass time into a serious, full-time business.
In this episode, we talk about:
And there’s special mention of our mutual friend, Matt Hawkins, and his album ‘Love, Loss & Washing Lines’.

Confidence is an inside job! I do believe it's possible to build confidence through small, brave steps - you don't have to be 'born with it' (in fact, I don't think anyone is). Here are seven things that have helped me build confidence:1. Preparation and practise 2. Rewriting the stories as affirmations 3. Preparing our body (physiology) 4. Rituals and anchors 5. Step outside your comfort zone 6. Get out of your head 7. Recognise and celebrate progress

In our modern world, our lives are so busy and full. Where would you like to create more space in your life?Making space can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but by letting go of things and creating more space in our lives, we allow for more inspiration and abundance to flow in.In this short episode, I talk about ways we can make more space in our physical world, our digital life, and create more time and space in our calendars. Which strategy are you going to try?
Kate Jones and Mandy Hose met over a decade ago and bonded over their premature twins with additional needs, and their remarkable capacity for love, laughter and swearing like troopers. As they grew closer, they confided feeling 'on the floor' loneliness sometimes because no one was talking about what life was like for families like theirs. So began Too Peas in a Podcast, a weekly conversation in which the two friends discuss the challenges and joys of parenting twins with additional needs, and in doing so they have given their community a voice.I have a number of friends who are absolute die-hard fans of the Too Peas podcast and who introduced the podcast to me, so I was really delighted to be able to chat with Mandy and Kate 'in real life'.In this episode, we talk about:* How the 'Too Peas' podcast began and its meteoric rise to fame * The story behind how 'The Invisible Life of Us' book evolved * Challenging things that people say to parents of kids with additional needs, and how we could better support each other * Reflections on the "grief" that parents might feel when receiving a diagnosis for their child * 'Empeathy' and the greatest gifts from parenting their awesome kids * How these busy mums look after themselves and find joy, and what it means to live a good life amongst the challenges

I recently heard a business coach on a podcast say that the biggest difference she's seen between those who experience success and those who don't is not that one group deserved success, but that they decided to go after it.Over the month of September, I decided to start a healthy eating plan and, coincidentally, also decided to do a 100K challenge for charity. Reflecting on the month, I can see how making a definite decision to take on these challenges made a difference to my ability to stay on track and work towards the goal. What are you ready to decide for your life? I have recently completed a 10 week course called 'Represented' with the incredible Annie Gichuru, who I actually interviewed back in Episode 13.Annie and I completed our coaching training together at the Beautiful You Coaching Academy, and Annie is now the DEI Coach and Consultant for BYCA, as well as running her own business, Uplifting Studios. This isn't a sponsored episode - I just really believe in the work Annie is doing in the world to help business owners build culturally and racially diverse, inclusive and equitable online businesses. I know this is lifelong work and, while I definitely felt stretched at times, I learned so much from the course and am incredibly grateful for having my eyes opened in many ways - so I wanted to tell you all about it!If you'd like to learn more about the Represented course, you can find more details on Annie's website or by following Uplifting Studios on Instagram. Also mentioned in this episode:I'd love you to join the Mummalove Lounge Facebook group and continue the conversation! Knowing how much difference mindfulness and meditation have made in my own life, I really wanted to invite Fleur Chambers on the podcast to share her wisdom and insights. But more than just discussing the benefits of meditation, our conversation delved into the powerfully simple and practical ways we can bring more mindful moments into our lives - and the ripple effect on our families and the world. In this episode, we chatted about:* What led Fleur to a mindfulness practice as a mother of three young boys, and how mindfulness has helped in their family life * Sharing her work on Insight Timer, then later developing her own Happy Habit app (you can try her 30 day happiness challenge, which is currently free) * Meditation through grief, being curious and getting to choose what that practice looks and feels like * Not trying to convince people into meditating, the different ways we can be present in our lives, and meeting people where they're at on the personal growth journey * The connection between self-care and feeling worthy, and being in touch with the whispers our bodies give us about what we need (before we break) * Fleur's current practice of deepening into a mantra over each month, and the words that inspire her. * The research behind being able to see the gifts in pain reducing physical and emotional pain. * And mixtapes, because we're both children of the 80s era 😉
Fleur is the gentle voice, creative mind and curious heart behind the Happy Habit app and online courses in meditation and mindfulness. Her offerings have been downloaded 1.3 million times in 35 countries.Fleur's meditations allow you to see that inner happiness is possible, regardless of the mistakes and regrets of the past, and the concerns for the future. Not smiling all the time happiness. Happiness in the form of inner strength.Fleur believes in using meditation as a tool for social change and collective hope. Proceeds from The Happy Habit go towards supporting micro projects in some of the poorest countries in the world.Fleur is happiest when she is on the beach with her husband, three boys and dog Lucky. You can find Fleur on Instagram at @thehappyhabitapp.Also mentioned in this episode:Conversations With Lisa podcast, episode 31: How To Be More Mindful (Even When Life Is Crazy)Mummalove Mix Tape on SpotifyI'd love you to join the Mummalove Lounge Facebook group and continue the conversation! If you need a good giggle (and, let's face it, we could all do with more joy at the moment), you should definitely have a listen to this conversation with the delightful dynamic duo, Fiona Harris and Mike McLeish.Fiona and Mike are both actors, as well as a talented husband-and-wife writing team, and they live with their two daughters in Melbourne. Their first novel, The Drop-off, was a popular favourite among bloggers and reviewers. In this episode, we chatted about the second book they've written together called 'The Pick-Up', published by Echo Publishing. We talked about the inspiration behind the book, the highs and lows of writing as a team, what it was like to write a book during lockdown in Melbourne (v1.0)... and they also gave me their best marriage advice and tips on raising teenagers 😉

In this episode, I would like to ask the bold question:How long do you think it's appropriate to grieve the loss of a child?I've been approached by multiple people about how to help a friend/sister/whoever who seems 'stuck' in their grief. This weekend, on 2nd May, marks five years since our youngest son, Nicholas, died. After five years of navigating grief, I wanted to share the three main lessons I've learned about acknowledging milestones and anniversaries. In this episode, I share:* How we've acknowledged anniversaries over the past five years * How my grief has changed over the years * How emotion around anniversaries can be unpredictable * That it's okay for the milestone to look different each time * That grief is such an individual journey and those around us won't necessarily experience or acknowledge a milestone in the same way we do * We need to ask for what we need.

HoneybeeAnother excellent Australian novel. It's a daring novel that touches on the lives of two people forever changed by encounter, one of which is the main character Sam. Whilst described as "heartbreaking", this novel delivers is also beautiful and life-affirming. One of my absolute favourite books this year.Buy Honeybee on AmazonBuy it on Booktopia3. American DirtThis is one of those books that drew me in from the very first paragraph and I just couldn't put it down until the very end! Although there is a lot of a controversy surrounding this book, it's a very compelling story and kept me on the edge of my seat (and ignoring my family for a weekend!).Buy American Dirt on AmazonBuy it on Booktopia4. The Good SisterIf you follow Sally Hepworth on Instagram, you'll find that she's rather entertaining. This 'family drama' is centred around twin sisters, Fern and Rose, their secrets and their bond. I found it an easy read, perfect for the holidays.Buy The Good Sister on AmazonBuy it on Booktopia5. Whilst sometimes given a bad rap, in my experience, the connection between women can be quite extraordinary and healing.“The circles of women around us weave invisible nets of love that carry us when we’re weak, and sing with us when we are strong.”~ SARKMy beautiful friend Kim and I have now held three Sacred Circle events in Brisbane over the past few months and I have found it so incredible to witness the magic and medicine that happens when women gather in circle.I know many people don't know what a Sacred Circle is (I didn't before I went to one!) so, in this episode, I thought I would step you through what our Sacred Circle events look like and what to expect if you're attending one. Also mentioned in this episode:Get in touch with Reiki Master, Crystal and Sound Healer Kim Rooney at Pure Presence.Add your name to the VIP list to find out details about our upcoming in-person Sacred Circle events in Brisbane at purepresence.com.au/sacred-circleFor Sacred Circle events near the Gold Coast, follow Rowena @raising_up_ or Jess Sermak @jess.sermakIf you're interested in joining an Online Sacred Circle, you can sign up early at mumma-love.com/holding-heartspace-waitlistI'd love you to join the new Mummalove Lounge Facebook group and continue the conversation! This is a very casual conversation, so feel free to prepare a cup of coffee, a soothing tea or something stronger (no judgement here) as I share with you what I would be telling you if we were catching up for coffee this week. This episode could also be called "The Highs and Lows of Birthday Week" or "Grief is Not Linear" or any number of things, but it's pretty real and raw and you may need tissues. Sorry, probably should have done a tissue alert in the intro. It wasn't a very well planned episode and I thought of a few more things I could have mentioned, but the main one was that I really appreciated all the love and messages on Nicholas' birthday on the weekend - so thank you for the love. Aah, parenting - it's a ride, isn't it? Wouldn't it be great if each of our kids came with their own manual?I'm going through a bit of an "uncomfortable patch" of parenting right now, so in this episode we'll be talking about the lessons I've learned over the past few weeks and the five things I try to remember when navigating choppy phases. While this is related to a phase of parenting, I think it could also be applied for any rocky patches in life.Mentioned in this episode:Maggie Dent 'Parental As Anything' podcastFrom Boys to Men bookWebinar seriesDan Siegel - Brainstorm bookDan Siegel - Video presentation on the Power of the Teenage BrainI'd love you to join the new Mummalove Lounge Facebook group and continue the conversation! Rachel Noble is an Australian writer, who has previously written, edited and produced for the ABC and BBC. In this conversation, we talk about how Rachel and her family have navigated grief over the past 8 years since the death of their fourth child, Hamish, in a tragic accident. We also discuss welcoming their new baby boy into the family after Hamish died, the story of birthing Rachel’s picture book into the world, and the new promise Rachel has made moving forward with relation to her grief. You can find Rachel at:Rachel Noble Author websiteOn Facebook or TwitterYou can find all the links to purchase Finn's Feather on this page of Rachel's website.Mummalove Mix Tape on SpotifyPlease leave a rating and review of the Mummalove podcast over on Apple Podcasts. Christmas can be a wonderful time of the year but it can also be a pretty tough time especially when you have to spend it missing someone you love.In today's episode, I'll talk about how our family spent our first Christmas without Nicholas, just under 8 months after he died, and what traditions have evolved over the past four years to weave Nicholas' spirit into Christmas.I also have four loving suggestions to help you navigate grief in your own way if you're missing loved ones during this festive season (and you're not feeling very festive).Sending extra love to you if you're grieving this Christmas.Mummalove Mix Tape on SpotifyPlease leave a rating and review of the Mummalove podcast over on Apple Podcasts. Today's episode is very close to my heart, with my sister-in-law Naomi and nephew Tyler discussing gender, identity and the courage to stand in the truth of who we are.Last year, Tyler socially transitioned as a transgender male. This was a pretty big surprise for our extended family and I was really proud of how everyone embraced Tyler's announcement - we may not have understood it completely, but we love Tyler and that's all that matters. Subsequently, we've all tried to learn how best to support Tyler. In this episode, I spoke with Tyler and Naomi about how the transition has been so far, how they have navigated big conversations as a family, and what advice they'd give to other young people and parents who are facing similar discussions on gender and identity.Mummalove Mix Tape on SpotifyPlease leave a rating and review of the Mummalove podcast over on Apple Podcasts. So it's been a BIG year anyway. In this episode, I give my top five tips when you're feeling overwhelmed by your to-do list:1. Prioritise self-care 2. Question everything on the to-do list : is it important, urgent, necessary? 3. Get lots of sleep 4. Lower your standards 5. Make it fun and shift up your energy

I was recently asked to think of a time in my life where I've had to make a decision where there was a lot of fear and uncertainty around the outcome. Luckily, I had plenty of options to choose from 😜It made me reflect on one of the biggest decisions I've ever had to make, which is when we embarked on prenatal testing for our third baby and needed to decide what to do with that information. In this short, solo episode, I talk through what helped and what factors we considered when approaching this monumental decision.Mentioned in this episode: The Upside documentary with Julia HalesPlease leave a rating and review of the Mummalove podcast over on Apple Podcasts.
October is Down syndrome Awareness Month, so I wanted to invite one of my treasured friends from the Down syndrome community, Joelle Wedd, to the podcast. In this episode, we talk about:* what it was like to receive a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis for Joelle's third baby; * how Joelle's life was changed by the arrival of Josee Hope; * becoming an advocate to create a better world for our children, and what advocacy looks like; * how Joelle has renamed October 'Down syndrome Acceptance Month' and what it means to Joelle to recognise this month; * how we can do better in Australia at supporting parents who receive a Down syndrome diagnosis; * and how Joelle has created a safe space for pregnant women who receive a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis.
Joelle Wedd is a mum to three children, and her youngest child Josee lives with a diagnosis of Down syndrome. Joelle has a passion for connecting pregnant Mums facing a potential or confirmed diagnosis of Down syndrome. 321 Pregnancy Care is Joelle’s other ‘baby’ and an important resource in the prenatal sector. I was never very interested in going to see psychics. Or, to be more honest, I always thought it seemed a little bit scary to be told of my future. But after Nicholas died, I read a book called 'After This' by Claire Bidwell Smith and it really changed my perspective on psychics and how those spiritual experiences can actually help us in our grief.Over the past few years, I've seen a few different psychics, mediums and healers, so I thought I'd give you the run down on how I've found each experience. I also share a bit about looking for spiritual signs from loved ones who have passed on.Mentioned in this episode:After This, by Claire Bidwell SmithThe Rules of Inheritance, by Claire Bidwell SmithThe Light Between Us, by Laura Lynn JacksonEpisode 16 - A Sister Conversation About Our Mum, with Rebecca Winston
Jessica Bean is a medicine access advocate, international speaker, consultant and empowerment coach for young women living with chronic illness.Informed at age 21 that she would need a double lung transplant to survive the damage caused to her lungs by the genetic condition cystic fibrosis, Jessica fought hard to change her trajectory. Over a decade later, Jessica continues to breathe through her own lungs and live a life beyond her diagnosis.“If I wanted a different future for myself, I had to become my own warrior. I was the one and only person who could change my health. No matter how much anybody loved or cared for me, nobody could do it for me. I had to take control and own it.”In this episode, Jess and I talk about what cystic fibrosis is, what it was like to grow up with the condition and what advice she'd give to parents who receive a CF diagnosis for their child. We also discuss the importance of intuition, advocating for our own healthcare and finding the right treatment path for us. After a surprise visit from Jess' dog, we chat about the healing power of our furry friends, and the richness and perspective that comes with facing life challenges.Jessica’s experience as one of the first cystic fibrosis patients to benefit from genetic modulation therapy, gave her an intimate understanding of the emerging challenges faced by patients in the age of personalised medicine. This has inspired a mission to ensure patients and their values are represented in decision making across the health eco system.Jessica’s work has been recognised by global health leaders and brands, including Bupa for whom she was a finalist in their 2016 health influencer awards. My beloved 10 year old son spends far more time whinging, complaining and generally resisting cleaning his teeth than he does actually cleaning his teeth. I’m sure this is not an unusual story when it comes to kids. But I was thinking about how often as adults we do a similar thing. Maybe not about cleaning our teeth, but can you think of something that you put off doing because it feels too hard?In this episode, I want to tell you the story of our laundry tub and how we managed to pretty easily and cheaply fix a situation that I'd been putting off for a good 11 years, and share some strategies to creating some quick wins in your life.Where can you clear some headspace by getting the job done, rather than continuing to think about it and let it annoy you forever? This week, my beautiful Mum, Marie, would have been turning 80 - on 14 August. Following an original diagnosis and treatment for oesophageal cancer, Mum died in January 2019, six short weeks after discovering she had secondary liver cancer. Whilst those final weeks together were incredibly hard, it was also a really beautiful time for our family being with Mum at the end of her human journey. For this episode, I invited my baby sister Rebecca Winston to the podcast to chat about that sacred time in our family. The conversation is both hilarious and teary, and (just a heads up) brevity is not our strong point. We talk about Mum's diagnosis, the similarities between birth and death, the role Nicholas played as we farewelled Mum, looking for spiritual signs after Mum had passed on, and everything in between. We hope that this conversation may help someone else's journey a little easier if they're facing the impending death of a loved one.Mentioned in this episode:Five Maries video on FacebookKaruna Hospice ServicesElizabeth Gilbert's podcast on The Moth discussing Rayya's death. You can connect with Rebecca on The 4 Blades on Instagram or Facebook, or Need a System on Instagram or Facebook. The Mummalove Mix Tape playlist is available on Spotify. Please leave a rating and review of the Mummalove podcast over on Apple Podcasts.
What do we do with the belongings of our loved ones after they have passed, when it feels like the only way we have left to be physically connected to them?In this episode, I share how our family chose to go through Nicholas' clothes and other belongings after he died and the timeline that felt right for us. I also touch on how the experience differed to going through my Mum's clothes after she died. Given I'm going to be talking about him a lot in future episodes, I thought I was only fair that I introduce you to my husband of 17 years, Ben Love. In this episode, I ask Ben the tough questions about what he finds hardest about marriage, what he likes the best and what he thinks is the secret to a happy marriage. It gets a little bit smooshy in parts, but hopefully gives you some insight into how we've managed to get through 17 years of marriage and still like each other (a lot).

In this episode, I introduce you to our beautiful son, Nicholas, and share what unfolded from when he first started getting sick, his admission to hospital through to his death three weeks later. It's a very raw, rough and vulnerable episode, but gives you some insight into how we managed the rollercoaster of ICU. If you need permission to sit this one out, that's totally okay. I know it might be a tough one to listen to. I promise they get a bit lighter from here on in.
