Zwaan de Vries is a teacher and performer in the Roy Hart Theatre and "dansexpressie". We met in the summer of 2018 at Maléragues, France where I was taking a workshop at The Roy Hart Centre called Human Voice-Extended. Zwaan de Vries and Carol Mendelson were co-teaching. I joined them both again in 2019 for the same workshop.
In this episode Zwann and I talk about her journey to the Roy Hart Theatre, why she keeps returning to the practice, and how the voice work connects her to her humanity.
Lisa and Marguerite talk about the Roy Hart work, the healing possibilities of singing, and a place to start in exploring your singing voice.

This experience was created when I saw a need to physicalize the receiving action in a group ball game exercise. I repeatedly noticed some students having difficulty receiving the ball without blocking the energy of the ball. Invite flow was created to help students practice receiving without blocking.
Then I noticed that Invite Flow helps make space for an incoming breath- as opposed to "grabbing" or "taking" inspiration. It also serves to gain knowledge about the breath cycle. When do I breath in? When do I breath out?
And simply, Invite Flow can help relieve tension.
Carol and Saule have been longtime residents and teachers at The Roy Hart Centre in France. For the past two summers, I've been able to attend a workshop called Human Voice which has been co-led by Carol and Zwaan DeVries (there is an upcoming episode with Zwaan).
Carol, Saule, and I talk about what's it like to teach online; what has us hooked; and, how to manage a student who starts to shut down in the process.
Plus, they've both offered a beginning exploration in the voice work.
