Tanya is " a left leg amputee, who lost my leg to cancer almost 5 years ago. I'm also a dancer, singer and trainee pole dancer/aerialist, who has performed with integrated dance group Croi Glan since 2020."

This is the message that I receive when she booked the time to record the podcast. She followed it with "I've been a leg amputee since Oct. 2017, so nearly 6 years rather than 5... time flies when you're having fun, or something.", which gives you an idea of her attitude toward her ordeal following the leg amputation.

It is a wonderful conversation about family, music, rural Ireland, travelling and, of course, what is like to be an amputee.

We marked September 2020 with a 240km run across Ireland for mental health awareness. We called it MIndfulwest Run and we decided the raise funds for https://www.alustforlife.com/ (A Lust for Life) and https://cmrf.org/ (Crumlin Children's Hospital). From the genesis of the idea to what unfolded over the months prior to it and during the run, is an amazing story of people - 20 to be precise - that came together with a common goal. What we discovered along the journey was a lot more that any of us had expected. It's a story of friendships, community, relationships, resilience, achievements, tears and laughter. It's a human story and one that I was keen to record in the hope that it may become a blueprint for us and others in the future. Keep the conversation going Thanks for listening. I spoke to Orla in April 2020 over Zoom. She spoke to me from the hospice in the a suburb of Dublin where she had been residing. We weren't able to meet face to face due to the Covid 19 restrictions. And to this day I don't know what Orla looks like. She had been campaigning for the Dying with Dignity Bill to be passed and today, by pure coincidence, the Bill has been re-submitted to the Government for consideration. It was Orla's wish to release the podcast after her passing. Below is an extract from a number of email exchanges that we had. "As I mentioned, it was good to listen back to. I feel the Social Fabric Podcast is a force for good in the world and am proud to have been a part of it. And please share it after I've passed in a few more days time. Orla " Died 28th August 2020 May she Rest In Peace.

This is a medley of previous guests that I like to call Everyday Heroes. All of them are doing amazing things for their communities from working with children with addiction, trying to change laws revolving around decriminalisation of drugs, to first responders volunteering, to Michelin star pop up restaurant to help suicide prevention, to nursing patient with Motor Neuron Disease, to creating a clothing brand that helps homeless people.Barry Dempsey, Tony Duffin, Ross Thompson, Daniel Hannigan, Adam Gaine, Charlie Wright. They are some of the everyday heroes that I spoke to for this podcast. There are lot more out there. Seek them out and help them in their quest to make our community a better place to be.And if you are inspired by them and you can champion your own quest for a better world, go for it.While editing this episode at 10:30 on the 28th of August 2019 I received the news that Fr Tony Coote passed away. Fr Tony was a previous guest on this podcast I am privileged to have had the opportunity to spend an hour talking to him, discussing marriages, religion, life and listening to his music choice. Adam Gaine, worked as his nurse since he was diagnosed with MND.I would like to dedicated this episode to the memory of Fr Tony easily one of the most inspiring person I met in a long time.May he rest in peace.

This was her first attempt and she has run as an independent.Below the quote from Audre Lorde that Mags mentioned in part in her conversation….“Next time, ask: What’s the worst that will happen? Then push yourself a little further than you dare. Once you start to speak, people will yell at you. They will interrupt you, put you down and suggest it’s personal. And the world won’t end.And the speaking will get easier and easier. And you will find you have fallen in love with your own vision, which you may never have realized you had. And you will lose some friends and lovers, and realize you don’t miss them. And new ones will find you and cherish you. And you will still flirt and paint your nails, dress up and party, because, as I think Emma Goldman said, “If I can’t dance, I don’t want to be part of your revolution.” And at last you’ll know with surpassing certainty that only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth. And that is not speaking.AndWhen I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”__________________________________________Mags Music ChoiceDamien Dempsey – FactoriesDel Amitri – Nothing ever happensMartin Hayes/Denis Cahill – A tuneDon McLean – Starry Starry NightBob Marley – So much trouble in the worldPearl Jam – AliveRonnie Drew – McAlpine Fusiliers

SOCIAL FABRIC 2018 – A Thank You Note When I started this journey, I had an idea for a project that would help young adult to rediscover the art of conversation. Growing up in Italy, we sat at the table everyday as a family And in Italy the family includes uncles, aunties, grannies, granddads, neighbours and anyone that happen to be passing by when the dinner was served. At the time it didn’t really seem to be that important, but as I spent 50 on this earth, I realised that the conversations, nuggets of information, jokes, laughter and that very important inter -generational crossover made a positive impact to my life. Listening to my favourite uncle talking about the good old days or my granny reminiscing about the War or even having a very animated conversation with my sisters about my favourite band, was all part of what made me. Looking at my teenage children, looking at the importance screen time – be it phone, tablet, tv or playstation – and the lack of conversational skills – or indeed the lack of interest in conversation, saddened me and genuinely worried me. The peer to peer conversation over Instagram, snapchat or whatever the next big thing is going to be, seemed to fall short of what I believe to be necessary and healthy for them. Over a glass of wine and lovely conversation with a couple of friends from Brazil, I mentioned that that I was worried about the very fabric of our society and the tears that started to appear. Social Fabric, the name, was born. When a friend of mine, Graham Bushe, completely the incredible feat of running the Wicklow Way race, 127 km, only to turn around and run back, I thought it would be a good idea to sit down with him and ask him how and why. I contacted the Outsider Magazine and asked them if they’d be interested in an article about Graham. They kindly agreed to the idea and off I went to meet with Graham. I brought my phone along, sat it between us on the table and asked him a few questions, I thought I’d record the chat in case I missed anything for when I was going to write the story. What developed was the idea of the podcast. I thought that perhaps someone out there would like to know about an ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The article was published, Graham got nominated for an Outsider Magazine award and I thought “why stop here, there are so many amazing people around and I want to know more about them and hopefully my kids will listen to their stories and get inspired” In the meatime, I decided to do a radio course in Near FM, in Coolock, Dublin. The course was brilliant and gave me a great taste for the radio, the studio, the recording systems and once I completed the course I put together a proposal for a weekly show. Social Fabric, the podcast was born. Loosely based on the fabulous Desert Island discs, in that the guests get to pick 7 songs that are meaningful to them, I decided to focus on Passion and community involvement. 9 months and 37 episodes later I have had the privilege to meet with a fantastic group of people whose lives, work, passion and drive could not have been more diverse. I learned so much from each one of them. From Graham Bushe – how mind over matter can make you achieve impossible things From Paul Byrne how and why he set up a website – greystonesguide.ie that has become the go to place for anyone in the town From Eamon O’Connor of LuckyBones, what it means to be a passionate musician and how to make a living out of it. A special thanks to Eamon for allowing me to use his songs for the intro of the podcast, Alice will be played in full at the end of this. From Pol O’Conghaile –how to combine the love for writing and travelling to become a multi award winning travel writer. From Patrik Albertsson – how to follow your passion and reinvent yourself from Policeman to Massage Therapist From Mark Davidson – how to use your passion for books to introduce children to the art of writing From Ju Ju Jay – How to overcome addiction to become a...
