Once upon a time, Jemimah Ashleigh and Shevonne Joyce each started a business and talked almost every day about the REAL of doing so... T
hey laughed, cried, had a few WHAT THE BLEEP moments, Liam Hemsworth got a mention somewhere and then it dawned on them: THIS IS A THING. The Business Experiment Podcast was born.
As the name suggests, it's an experiment involving two entrepreneurs and a cat who decided it was time someone got real about what it's like to run a business for the first time; the good, the bad, the ugly. This is designed to document their personal experiences to inspire you, motivate you and maybe mildly entertain you.
The best part is, we have no idea how this will turn out: we have never recorded a podcast before... What better time to start than now?!

That's right, Experimenters. This is not a drill. Tracey Spicer was in the lab. The Tracey Spicer.
Tracey is a woman of many talents - an author, journalist and broadcaster who has anchored programs across many well respected television stations. She's also written, produced and presented documentaries and is an ambassador for many worthwhile causes. In addition to that, she's a columnist for Fairfax, a trainer in the Outspoken Women program and media trainer at Spicer Communications.

Tracey not only shares the real of her journey navigating the world of media and television as a woman but also to strip bare the deeply entrenched layers of discrimination against women that has held them back in business and life for far too long. We'll get realer than real about how she overcame barriers to mentor, inspire and lead women to the successes they are capable of being.

We've spoken before about how to survive business when business sucks, but what about big life events (termed 'bleeps')? How do you get through when you're personally struggling? This also includes other beautiful events that are not so much bleeps, but take a lot of adjustment, like having a baby and trying to navigate all the sleepless nights et al that comes along with your precious little mini.
What happens to business when life bleeps or you feel bleep?
The girls get up close and personal about a few life bleeps they've experienced recently and talk about what business is really like during these times. They share suggestions for how to get through and keep on bossing when bossing is hard. Tune in to hear more.

Welcome to Femeconomy. This is where we achieve gender equality through women's purse power in a way that benefits both men and women.
The story starts when Jade was in a Melbourne Taxi on a work trip and read that women make 85% of purchasing decisions. She was immediately obsessed with this statistic and realised that this could be the perfect economic lever to advance gender equality. She floated the idea past her sister-in-law, Alanna, and the rest is history - Femeconomy.com was born.
Femeconomy is the perfect place for women to shop their 85% with female lead brands and in one short year have reached over 380,000 people with a never ending list of awards spanning tech, retail, business and consumer markets.
Jade and Alanna both chucked their corporate jobs in pursuit of using purse power to advance gender equality. They've achieved a mighty lot in a short space of time. We decided to get them in the studio to discuss the REAL of their journey and the impact it's having on the advancement of gender equality around the world. This is an unmissable episode for both men and women alike about the benefits of true equality in business and life.

The introduction of the internet has undoubtedly had phenomenal impacts on the potential and growth of businesses around the globe. It's fast tracked the spread of information and given business owners a platform to both share and consume with more fluidity than ever before.
A new set of problems are emerging with the way we consume, learn and value products and services and this is impacting us in more ways that we realise. One example of this is the sheer mass of online courses abounding from every corner of the internet, as well as other apps and websites designed to keep up with the quick pace of modern life.
In this episode we discuss a recent experience Jemimah had when considering an online course. We discuss how this new way of working is giving us more of 'time', but what are we sacrificing in exchange? Listen to find out more.

Girl on girl sabotage is everywhere we look and read. But is it really a pervasive thing? Or do we just think it is?
This problem creates cultures of fear that impacts our success in business and life. It changes the way we view and judge others and ourselves, our action and inaction, the way we empower, support and collaborate with others. This is an empassioned conversation between two women who are pioneering the idea taking hammer to the glass ceiling. If you're a woman or a man who wants to join a movement of empowered leaders who empower women, this podcast is for you.
In true Jemimah style, she also shares a hilarious what the bleep from a recent holiday with her young niece in Sydney that you won't believe.

Let's be honest, there's been plenty of moments in all of our lives when we've had some mad chats with the universe. Asking for a sign, wondering what kind of role it plays in the success of our lives, perhaps giving it the rude finger when things don't turn out as we expected.
What if we were more connected to the universe than we give credit for?
Meet Alex Tripod. She's perfected the art of having mad chats with the universe and is taking the world by storm and has built a global business selling the intangible - how to manifest your desires through raising your vibrational energy. She's taken quantum physics, law of attraction and a soul-awakening experience and transformed it into a mission to raise the vibration of humanity on a global scale. Think it's a load of loco? Think again because the results her clients experience speak for themselves.
With thousands of followers and clients, Alex runs her business whilst travelling the globe. A straight talking, getting real, full of raw heart goddess, she's the least 'woo woo' woo woo coach we've ever met.
Jemimah and Shevonne invited Alex on to the show to talk about the role that our beliefs, vibrational energy and mindset plays in building our business and how manifesting is really a matter of science. She also talks about the REAL of her journey building a business selling consciousness. She's walking talking proof that anything is possible.

The bad news is we can't promise you that you won't have your own encounters with trolls along your journey. The good news is we have some gold to share about how to rise above it with brilliant examples of successful business owners and high profile leaders have done just that. If you're experiencing trolls currently, have experienced them, are yet to experience them, are terrified of being trolled or just interested in this modern phenomenon, this episode is for you.
As with every episode, we also have some funny insights and stories to share that will undoubtedly entertain.

Everyone says to be successful in business you need to 'take opportunities', but that's only part of the equation. The ladies get real about all the ways that opportunity is missed, misunderstood, underestimated and how this prevents business owners from realising success in their business real journey.
How can you get ahead of the game by recognising valuable opportunities? How do you choose what opportunities to follow? What do you do if you've been waiting around for opportunities that don't show up?
Jemimah shares a hilarious what the bleep, the Brisbane bird life cheers Shevonne on in the background and it's another insightful discussion about how business evolves and changes in ways business owners would not expect.

Jemimah and Shevonne have a job that gives them the incredible opportunity to meet lots of business owners all over Australia and the world and learn about what the business real is like.
What we've discovered might surprise you - many business owners are living a double life. What's presented to the world about their business can be in stark contrast to the behind the scenes reality. Many business owners are suffering in the face of difficult and complex problems that prevent them from growing successful and sustainable businesses.
There's many reasons why this can occur, but a key reason for this problem is the culture of sugar-coating the start-up grind. Industry experts that say things like 'it's never been a better time to start a business. You don't need any money, all you need is a laptop, a phone and social media account.' This is true to start a business, but to grow it? You need a lot more than that.
Join us as we delve into the not so sugary world of the entrepreneurial double life and get damn real about it. If you are out there and suffering from this, tune in to find out how to overcome it... And guaranteed, you haven't heard this advice before.

The word is out - Darcy J Smyth is on the cash money with his revolutionary sales methodology - Tonal Persuasion Method for Sales. Whilst the result of applying this methodology in the right way is ultimately more sales and money in your business, contrary to popular belief, it's actually nothing to do with sales and money. SAY WHAAAAT?
This podcast will open your eyes (and, more accurately, ears) to the number one most important part of being successful in sales that a lot of business owners completely miss. If you're a business owner who is terrified of sales, totally lost, bewildered, exhausted, and wondering why your ideal clients aren't lining up to buy from you, rest assured that this episode will answer a lot of questions.

In this episode we are joined by relationship expert Emily Chadbourne to talk about how to leverage the power of human connection and relationships in business and life.
Emily is about as real as it gets. She's an f-bomb dropping, straight talking, entrepreneur and relationship genius who is full of raw heart and witty quips. She began her business journey by recognising that the world is increasingly disconnected from love and happiness and set out on a mission to help us all find ourselves and each other again.
Emily is dedicated to getting real with women about love. She works with them to find, not just any love, not just another shag, but the epic, heart stopping, can't breathe kind of love. Not only that she has some valuable information for men in love too.
Her relationship expertise spans across all realms of life, including how to build meaningful relationships in business. We couldn't think of anyone better to help us understand the role that meaningful relationships play in business and life.
In this episode she has some killer points and tips about not only how to connect with your tribe, but how to find the kind of relationships that take you and your business to the next level.
It's fair to say, we're all a little crazy in love about Emily at TBE HQ!

In this episode of The Business Experiment, we answer the following question from a listener: 'how do you take leave without feeling guilty?' This is a question that so many entrepreneurs struggle with!
We discuss the difficulties of taking leave or time for self care, the issues with guilt and focus on the benefits of having a break for your working life.
In our usual business REAL way, we also cover the perils of recording super late at night, another listener issues a challenge to Jemimah and somewhere along the way we end up debating the definition of glamping.
If you're on the verge of burn out, struggling to find time for yourself or just totally daunted at the prospect of taking a break, this episode is for you.

This means having some pretty tough conversations with yourself and also investing in your own development, which is exactly what Jemimah did recently and totally what Shevonne does for a living.
Think this is just a load of mumbo jumbo? Think again. We cover the types of behaviour associated with truly successful entrepreneurs and how they distinguish themselves from wantrepreneurs.
As usual we share some interesting what the bleeps, laughs and rich insights that will provoke, entertain and leave you to ponder. This episode provides an opportunity for you to reflect on where you are versus what your end result is and get serious about bossing in biz. Listen to find out how.

Daniel Flynn found himself faced with two overwhelming and heart breaking problems:
Millions of people living in poverty. Children walking unbelievable distances to collect dirty and disease filled water that ultimately ends up killing them (that is if they make it back home alive) and;
Millions of dollars being spent on bottled water in societies where clean drinking water is readily available.
Many of us despair about world poverty. We wonder how we, as one person, can help. Daniel and his co-founders, Justine and Jarryd, realised how they could empower all of us to create change. They started a movement, through their social enterprise, Thankyou, which gives every day consumers the opportunity to contribute to changing the course of history by doing their daily shopping.
They have taken two shocking problems and created a revolutionary solution by selling bottled water and other every day products. Thankyou donates 100% of the profits to fund projects including clean drinking water and food, sanitation and maternal/child health. They overcame unbelievable business adversity, powered by their belief that two problems can equal a solution and have gone on to donate over 5 million dollars to help people in need. In the process, they broke all the rules to innovate extraordinary achievements.
What can we learn from these three entrepreneurs? Listen to find out.

What steps can you take if you become aware of a copycat business? True to their business real style, they also have a question for the copy cats themselves.
Join Jemimah and Shevonne this Thursday as they laugh and what the bleep through another important topic that impacts real business owners every day.

Ask anyone how they feel about cold calling and emailing for the hard sell and they'll tell you how uncool it is. Yet, how many business owners continue approaching sales in this way? Far too many. Our inbox does not lie. People seem to think that because that's the way it's 'always been done' that it's the way they should do it too: WRONG. Let's work smarter, not harder guys. Down tools for a moment and let's huddle about this, because it's an important conversation.
We want to help you with your marketing. In this podcast we talk about a fundamental element of building a business. We also give an example of cold calling and emailing that does not involve hard selling tactics. We may also get into a tiny tiff about who loves Gary Vee more, but that's another story.

Today Jemimah and Shevonne share their "proven formula for how to be an overnight success." Yes, for reals. It's the first and last time we will use the words "proven formula" in anything we ever do. In other news, the JJ count gets some sugar and spice, we share a ripper what the bleep moment and have our usual quirky anecdotes to share.

In this episode we tackle some of the more complex questions sent in by listeners for our "ask us anything." We discuss what the best piece of business advice we've ever received is, whether we really think women have it tougher in business than men do and whether we should give discounts to family and friends. That's right, all the juicy topics in one podcast!
True to the theme of this podcast, we also share an inspirational quote and what the bleep moment sent in by our listeners! We expand on Shevonne's secret obsession with Ghost Hunters and reveal an update on the JJ count.

In this episode, Jemimah and Shevonne discuss the controversial statement that the customer is always right. What does this mean for business owners, employees and customers themselves? We give some examples of great customer service and how to deal with difficult customers. Listen to find out some customer service tips, tricks and lessons learnt. We are also up to our usual frivolity, welcome a new country to our growing list and announce our upcoming ask us anything event! Enjoy!

This week Jemimah and Shevonne discuss an important topic as we tackle the world of having business success. Why do so many people feel the need to apologise for having business success and why do we see it as bragging? We believe it's possible to be humble and still celebrate your success. We tackle the world of being afraid of your own success and that of other people. We also open the question of - what is the definition of success?
The girls talk about creating a community of people who support each other through both success and failure and the importance of building a tribe of people who are going to support you and your success.
We also have an update on the JJ count, Jemimah discovered during the week that there are now Mint Malteasers, Shevonne brings a technological what the bleep to the table (RIP Apple MAC Pro. It's very sad) and we invent a new term "ant viral."

What separates the entrepreneurs from the wantrepreneurs? In this episode we bask in the entrepreneurial wisdom of Lisa Song Sutton who gives us her business insights. We discuss what the most important part of a plan is, how to beat talent, three key elements to being successful in business and manage to fit in Lisa's top 5 tips, business highlights, lowlights and a great WHAT THE BLEEP moment about how "no" doesn't always mean "no!" Jemimah enjoys a trip down memory lane from her past Vegas trips and Shevonne troops on through her lingering illness.
The girls absolutely loved talking business REAL with Lisa, who is a charming, smart, down to earth and caring entrepreneur with ambition to boot. We look forward to taste testing one of those fabulous cupcakes in Sin City one day.

In this episode we add our flavour to the popular topic of you being the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with.
We re-cap how the bleeps has escalated over the past couple of weeks (leading to major what the bleep moments from both the girls), Jemimah invites herself to a sleep over at Lisa Song Suttons house in Vegas and we welcome a new country (ciao Italy!). Jemimah hasn't forgiven Richard Branson yet and continues her ongoing obsession with Gary Vaynerchuk. Just another day in the life, really.

This episode is dedicated to discussing what we have learnt about the routines of highly successful people after reading an article describing what some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs have in common. We decided to run an experiment to see whether following their routine would lead to more business success. Highlights include having to re-start the challenge on account of initial attempts being thwarted by a muesli/fish induced food poisoning, Shevonne and Jemimah discovering a newfound interest in baking cakes (Chris Hemsworth, call us), Jemimah catching up with some drinks she hasn't seen in a while (it will make sense when you listen) and some misdirected cat photos (again, just listen, it will make sense). A note for our international listeners that "Maccas" is Australian for McDonalds. In short, did following the routine of highly successful people lead to Jemimah being more successful? Listen to find out!

Today we discuss how to find your tribe and networking without networking. We cover some networking pitfalls, disasters, things we wish we had've known and how hustling with your tribe is a pure joy. We touch on how we choose who we want to work with and, in the words of John Oliver, question why the elevator pitch is still a thing?! We also learn experiments, by their very nature, have a mind of their own and don't always go as anticipated- especially when you are eating the breakfast widely reported as being Richard Bransons favourite and battling phone storage issues. Richard, mate - we'd love to talk to you.

The girls were visited this week by Andrew Sands, Co-Director of Harlequin Belle, the Melbourne-based beautiful and stylish leater accessories store.
Jemimah and Andrew play catch up and talk about the fact they have known each other for over ten years ago once upon a time used to work in the government together. Andrew imparts his top 5 pieces of business wisdom that are invaluable for all business owners to hear. Highlights include working through the tip, be wary of advice that you should build a Frankensteins Monster.
The girls also conduct their first experiment. They test the recent pop culture article theory about bright lipstick, does it improve business success? In short... no, not so much. Jemimah just ended up eating alot of lipstick and Shevonne missed wearing colourful lipstick.
We loved having Andrew on the show and come and share his wisdom.

Today we are speaking with the inspirational Eve Mizzi who founded the She is Kind awards... Because kindness deserves to be celebrated. Eve talks about following her passion and purpose and how this has lead her away from the 9-5 grind and toward living her dreams. We also cover unusual reasons why Jemimah is late to podcasts - glitter and toilet explosions included - and in usual style, things escalated and we kind of challenged Hamish and Andy to be the first podcast... ON THE MOON. Stay for the hilarious WHAT THE BLEEP moment at the end where Jemimah hangs up on a very important phone call... Three times. Just another day in the world of business REAL.

Working from home is the dream, right? We love it pretty hardcore… Especially the 90’s music and Skyping in yoga pants.
There are some things we wish we had’ve known about working from home though…
Tip #1: Don’t do a Jemimah and spend the first week binge watching Dawsons Creek. The tips only get better from there.
We also discuss a possible rendition of Olivia Newton John’s “Let Get Physical”, setting boundaries for yourself, co-working, the most eaten food in the world, stalking your ex on instagram and taking self care weekends.
A note to our international listeners: a “Macca’s run” is Australian for going through the drive through at McDonalds.

The business real divas are back with another episode of The Business Experiment, this time about sales and marketing. Jemimah outlines the inspiration that occurred after the dip which was followed by a very positive What the Bleep moment. They also discuss opportunity and finding out what your default is when opportunity presents itself, the importance of being authentic and relatable, how to deal with close competitors, not all dollars are created equal, dealing with features versus benefits and the importance of just 'ready, fire, aim.'
There's also a serious amount fan girl action over The Boomerang Effect by Timbo Reid, discussion about the importance of knowing your audience (and some valuable lessons of not what to do!) Welcome back Experimenters!

Today Jemimah turned up to record in the middle of one big WHAT THE BLEEP moment. She was over it. Her soul was tired. In the true spirit of the business REAL, we decided to roll with it and this is what happened. We also cover starting a magic show, a book idea entitled “Malteser Queen”, a Star Wars Party, Mindfulness, neither of us knowing about ballet and parenting v cat ownership. If you are an entrepreneur on the verge of quitting, if you need a pep me up, if you are sitting there WHAT THE BLEEPING or you know someone who is, you both cannot miss this. Get on board, tag a friend. WE GOT THIS.
