AAPI Faith Alliance

For too long, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have been portrayed as a silent minority in the public sphere. It is time for our community to speak up. There is strength in numbers. By joining together, we can make our voices count in the halls of Congress, the White House, and upper echelons of corporate America, and create greater access to our nation’s leaders.

We invite you to join the nonpartisan 1000 Initiative, a national network of committed AAPI churches and Christian leaders to speak with a unified voice: to bear witness, to advocate, and to seek partnerships that specifically address our community's unique challenges.

AAPI Faith Alliance 1000 Initiative:  To promote AAPI voices in the public sphere, the AAPI Faith Alliance is calling churches and ministries to join a movement of 1000 organizations. This movement will connect and engage our communities in continued efforts to increase our presence in the national dialogues. We invite your church, ministry or organization to be a Ministry Partner engaged in this effort.

A group of local storytellers,  Emily Sterling, Kelly Hansen, Kenny Field and Zoe Pilliafas wondered: "Is it possible that when your memory begins to cloud, you hold on more strongly to memories of your truest love? When the distraction of life’s mundane memories disappears are you left with the distillation of your life’s truest love?"

These storytellers felt it was time for them to share the stories of the residents of The Emerson House Dementia Care Facility on Division Street. They interviewed and photographed these residents and found that "in memory loss, in aging, in an assisted living facility, there can be beauty, grace, dignity, and great adventure."

In February, they displayed these stories and photographs in an exhibit titled, "What is the Love of Your Life?" at Portland Grind. It explored passions outside of an intimate relationship as the secret to a happy life.

Tune in to learn all about this project and be challenged to explore, what is the love of your life!!!

Girls education matter! This Friday, Phionah Musumba discusses the barriers to girls' education in rural Kenya and what her organization, the Malkia Empowerment Network through The Center for Disadvantaged Girls (CDG) is doing to empower girls.

"The Centre of Disadvantaged Girls has a vision to create a haven where girls, women and youth in the society, especially the community around us can identify with their very own, and together prepare themselves to face the world responsibly not only financially, but also educationally, health wise and socially."

Phionah says: "I have a burning passion for the needy and less privileged in society, not because I have much, since I got nothing, but because I have been through a lot of suffering all my life, as a young girl and even as a mother."

She envisions a future where "women don't have to walk tens of kilometres to fetch a few litres of water, a future where women will be given equal rights to education and leadership posts as men, where our kids don't die for lack of food and medical attention."

Tony Young's rescue puppy, Drago, was 8 months old before he was properly diagnosed. It was Dr. O’Sullivan who recognized that Drago who was suffering from something far more serious than panos (which he had previously been diagnosed with). He was instead facing FCP.  However, once properly diagnosed, the prognosis was good for a full recovery as he was still so young and had plenty of growing yet to do.

Drago had surgery on both elbows to pull out the bone shards, scrape down the bones at the joints and drill holes in his long bones to aid blood flow in the growth process.  It was a long road of keeping an exuberant puppy still and quiet, during the months when he should have been running and playing and going through rigorous obedience training.  Fortunately, between Dr. O’s holistic methods (acupuncture, massage, cold laser therapy, and herbs) and the wonderful techs at the LVVSC rehab center, he came through it beautifully and in a few months we started seeing a beautiful, healthy, active young Drago.

Over the course of a 25 year career with the Phoenix Police Department, Jamie Lutes has developed a love for Pit Bulls. Most of career was spent as a Narcotics Detective.

As a result of her work Jamie consistently encountered Pit Bulls. She learned through this personal experience that the Pit Bull is not only the most mis-understood breed of dog but also the most abused, neglected and over bred. Regardless of the pain and suffering these dogs were forced to endure at the hands of humans, they were almost always forgiving, devoted and hungry for any human attention.

Jamie has rescued and found homes for many Pits.  In 1998 she rescued a Pit Bull from a Clandestine Methamphetamine Lab and adopted her. After living with this amazing dog she had no desire to live with any other breed again and hasn't.

Today, Jamie is a serious advocate for Pit Bulls and STRONGLY denounces breed specific legislatation and dog fighting in any form. She currently lives with 2 Pits.

As East's reputation grew on the L.A. session scene, so did his job calls. From that point on, East worked consistently.  He toured with Loggins appearing with the singer at Live Aid in 1985. Eric Clapton heard Nathan and invited him to join his band. With keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and drummer Phil Collins, they toured the world over and performed multiple concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall which resulted in the release of Clapton's "24 Nights" CD, (1988). With Clapton, he would go on to record numerous CD's including Journeyman, August, Behind The Sun, Pilgrim, Reptile and the Multi-Grammy Award winning multi-platinum Clapton MTV Unplugged CD.In 1990, while in the studio recording Bob James' Grand Piano Canyon album, the keyboardist asked East, Lee Ritenour, and Harvey Mason if they'd be interested in forming a group where each member would be an equal partner and could contribute songs. James, who at the time held an executive position at Warner Bros.' jazz A&R department, got them a deal with the label; a couple of months later, the group now known as Fourplay began recording their debut album. Their first record, 1991′s Fourplay, sold over a million copies and remained at the number one position on Billboard's contemporary jazz charts for 33 weeks. Their next LP, 1993′s Between the Sheets, reached number one, went gold, and received a Grammy nomination. In 1995, their third gold album, Elixir, inherited the number one position from Kenny G's Breathless and remained on the charts for more than 90 weeks. Fourplay's 4 album entered the jazz charts at number one when guitarist Larry Carlton joined the band. Now, after fifteen years together, nine CD's and 5 Grammy nominations, Fourplay's X CD debuted at number one (Billboard Contemporary Jazz) remaining there for more than two months.

"BLOAT" The Mother of All Emergencies  In the bloated stomach, gas and/or food stretches the stomach many times its normal size, causing tremendous abdominal pain. For reasons we do not fully understand, this grossly distended stomach tends to rotate, thus twisting off not only its own blood supply but the only exit routes for the gas inside. Not only is this condition extremely painful but it is also rapidly life-threatening. A dog with a bloated, twisted stomach (more scientifically called gastric dilatation and volvulus) will die in pain in a matter of hours unless drastic steps are taken.  Patient Mike Gang   Mike came into Becky Gang's life at the age of 8 weeks. Mike was born in Colorado and along with his 5 siblings was donated to the Eye Dog Foundation in Phoenix, AZ.   Mike was originally going to be in the breeding program, but that changed and Becky adopted Mike as a family pet.   Mike was a very healthy dog most of his life, with the exception of a sensitive tummy on occasion and "growing pains" in his early years. He became a therapy dog and enjoyed playing ball with residents at a local nursing home.   Mike was about 11 years old at the onset of his "bloat." Myasthenia Gravis - Mystery Diagnosis & Jackie Saxon Generally, symptoms come on relatively suddenly over days to weeks and can be fairly broad spectrum. The classically exercise-induced weakness may not be seen at all and sometimes megaesophagus is the only sign (as in the focal form of myasthenia gravis).   Because swallowing difficulties and regurgitation often are included in the clinical picture, pneumonia resulting from accidental inhalation of saliva, food, or vomit can occur complicating the picture and creating a more serious situation. This complication is called aspiration pneumonia and substantially worsens prognosis.

Dharma not considered to be as prolific a producer as Tashi had been less traumatized by her time at the mill and quickly adapted to life outside.

Tashi however had birthed many litters. As a result, she had no muscle tone at all (even in her rear end), she could barely walk, had chronic ear infections and her feet were splayed.

After only six weeks with Dr.O'Sullivan's holistic regimend, Jake & Ellen have watched Tashi blossom into the dog she was always meant to be.

Maurits Groen - Vice President During his study political science he became interested in environmental and developmental issues and joined activist groups in The Netherlands. From '78 to '82 he was chief editor and publisher of 'Friends of the Earth Netherlands'. In 1982 he founded his own consultancy & communication agency which in the past three decades has consulted both government bodies, the top Dutch enterprises as well as national and international NGO's. He produced various radio and TV documentaries, wrote articles and books and was directly involved in writing the first environmental policy of the Dutch Department of Environment in the 1980's. In 2010, together with Camille van Gestel he successfully initiated a project which is currently compensating the local carbon emissions of the 2010 FIFA World Cup football in South Africa. Millions of LED bulbs (made by Lemnis Lighting) are replacing polluting incandescent lamps. Maurits about WakaWaka: "I feel my career so far was merely a preparation for my work for WakaWaka. I talk a lot about the environmental, social and economical challenges in the world. WakaWaka is a showcase of how a simple idea can have a profound impact on the world, comprising all those aspects."  The WakaWaka Foundation has two main goals: We devise strategies to make sure solar solutions become available to those who suffer from extreme poverty, live in remote regions or are a victim of forced migration, for example due to wars. We educate children in developing countries about the health benefits and money-saving benefits of making sustainable choices for their family and community.   WATCH AT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qU031tNQkE

In my twenties I inherited enough money to live without a paid job. I had grown up in Denver in a culturally Jewish family that emphasized Tikkun Olam, the value of healing the world through economic and social justice. I took these values to heart and prepared for a career in international development and women's empowerment. At the start, my idea of justice was to spend my time helping those with less. After grad school I moved to Kinshasa, Zaire (now DRC) and worked there for four years, launching a career working with governments, the UN and NGOs to assist in developing primary health care delivery systems and infrastructure in Africa. I was also blessed to meet the woman who became my life partner, Gael Murphy. Although I was helping, I began to understand the limits of creating justice through outside aid. Meanwhile, the funds that I had inherited basically gathered dust, partly because I was busy with my work and partly because I was ambivalent about my own wealth and privilege.

Mary Tidlund, a founding member of the Foundation was adopted at the age of 7 by a loving Calgary family. Along with 3 other adopted children, Mary shared her childhood with at least 40 other foster children that her parents nurtured and loved. She knew at a young age the importance of giving and receiving and that she would give back in some way. Early in her business life she organized functions for hundreds of Calgarians where the proceeds would be given to the Red Cross - Bangladesh projects. In Saskatchewan where she operated her businesses she annually contributed funds for educational advancement for children. In 1998, after extensive world travels, she realized she could do far more by creating a formal structure and using her skills with others to aid in areas where they could identify medical, literacy and the alleviation of poverty needs. The foundation was registered and now she can continue to give back what has been given to her, to everyone everywhere with medical, literacy and the alleviation of poverty needs. Paso Robles Food Cooperative

Our vision is to create a community center focused on local food. We see an opportunity to connect the demand for fresh, healthy, and local food with the abundance -- and incredible diversity -- of what our farmers are producing here on the Central Coast.

We are a group of community members that have been volunteering our time to take the concept and vision of a local food co-op through the development stages from organizing to opening of the store. The process is quite natural and straight forward, many guidebooks and toolkits exist, but nothing can save us from the experience and reward of organizing our community to meet its own needs. It is up to all of us to make the Paso Food Co-op a reality! Subscribe to Sylvia Global Media at: http://www.youtube.com/user/SylviaGlobal

Interview with Dr. Meghana Bhatt, VP R&D, FEM Inc. and John Gerzema, author of The Athena Doctrine: How Women (and the Men Who Think Like Them) Will Rule the Future. We live in a world that's increasingly social, interdependent and transparent. And in this world, feminine values are ascendant. As John Gerzema and Michael D'Antonio's proprietary survey of 64,000 people around the world shows, traditionally feminine leadership and values are now more popular than the macho paradigm of the past. The most innovative among us are breaking away from traditional structures to be more flexible, collaborative and nurturing. And both men and women from Medellin to Nairobi are adopting this style, which emphasizes cooperation, long-term thinking, and flexibility. Informally, and in countless ways, they are following the Athena Doctrine, named after the Greek Goddess, the warrior whose strength came from wisdom and fairness. All over the world, people are deploying feminine thinking and values to make their lives, and the world, better.   Subscribe to Sylvia Global Media at:
