The Underground Huddle is a virtual group meeting between all BUILD clients and other select guests that occurs two times per year and features a guest speaker. BUILD’s 7th Underground Huddle was recorded on June 9th, 2023 and featured Josh Wells, a 10-year NFL Veteran who currently plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars. A former high school quarterback, Wells walked-on to James Madison University where he quickly earned a scholarship. At JMU, Wells played multiple positions on the offensive and defensive lines. In 2014, Wells signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. In 2018, Wells was a part of the Jaguars team that made it to the AFC Championship Game where they fell to Tom Brady’s New England Patriots. In 2019, Wells signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played in all four playoff games during the team’s Super Bowl winning season in 2020. In 2023, Wells reunited with the Jaguars, signing a new contract in April 2023. Wells’ ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line, his desire to be a team player by mentoring younger players, and his resilience in responding to adversity – including a torn patellar tendon last season – has contributed to a career marked by longevity and inspiration. A family man and one of strong faith, Wells resides in Jacksonville with his wife, Morgan, one daughter, and two sons.

St. Thomas found so much success at the Division 3 level that in 2021 they competed in Division 1’s Pioneer Football League, winning 7 of 10 games in their first season against scholarship programs. Coach Caruso has been featured many times in TBL’s weekly emailed newsletter, Thursday Fire. Grab a pen and paper and enjoy almost a full hour of Coach Caruso delivering a powerful message directly to the TBL Army focused on faith, family, and leadership.

All cliché values of an effective leader work, if you work them. Becoming a Disciplined Leader requires a humble, positive, and ironclad attitude coupled with a relentless work ethic – one that commits to taking consistent action and inspires others along the way. Put simply, actions speak louder than words. The Bottom Line is that practice is more important than the game – both on and off the field of whatever game you play – and holding others accountable to implementing and improving disciplined habits is what TBL Coaching, LLC was founded on.

A conversation between TBL Coaches Ben Rogers and Sam Rogers, LITTLE THINGS is posted monthly. Each month Sam (or a select guest) brings with him one little thing - a word, thought, or question - that has been prevalent over the past 30 days in his leadership coaching, training, and development. With a passion for leadership and making others better and with a skill of simplifying and linking lessons learned from business, sports, education, and other areas of life, our expectation as leaders is to inspire listeners to get off the bench and take tangible action on the little things to improve themselves, their relationships, and their teams.

Sam Rogers is a head high school football coach, the Founder of EZDAY Training, and serves as a TBL Coach for Group I.S.I. Workshops and One-on-One 90 programs. With TBL, Sam created the Anchored & Armored program which trains the spirit, mind, and body to be unshakeable. Ben Rogers founded The Bottom Line Coaching Company in 2019 and serves as a TBL Coach for Group I.S.I. Workshops, One-on-One 90 programs, and One-on-One Pro monthly coaching. With TBL, Ben created the Kaizen program which breaks down large goals and articulates them into small, consistent, and disciplined habits to be improved on over time.

Mark Hendrickson is a former professional basketball AND baseball player. Despite many opportunities to turn pro early - he got drafted six different times by the MLB - he chose to complete his degree at Washington State University. At Washington State, Hendrickson was selected to the All-Conference teams for his performance on the court and on the diamond. Hendrickson was drafted by the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers in 1996 and spent time on the Sacramento Kings, New Jersey Nets, and Cleveland Cavaliers before ultimately retiring from basketball and shifting his full focus to professional baseball. Although he still competed in the minor leagues during the summers of his basketball career, Hendrickson's first appearance in the majors was with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002 as a relief pitcher. Before his retirement from baseball, Hendrickson pitched for the Blue Jays, Devil Rays, Dodgers, Marlins, and Orioles. When asked about his best quality as a leader on and off the court or field, Hendrickson said that he had an ability to stay calm despite the highs and lows of competing in professional sports ("The Next Pitch" mentality). Hendrickson's mentors and inspirations throughout his career include Buck Showalter, Kevin Eastman, and Roy Halladay. Today, Mark Hendrickson resides in Pennsylvania with his wife and children and is on a mission to promote the younger generation's involvement in sports by sharing lessons he learned from his playing days - all the way from his childhood to his remarkable two-sport career in the NBA and the MLB.

When asked about the importance of accountability, University of South Carolina Head Football Coach Shane Beamer says that it’s “so huge and we just need to be relentless about it. You can’t pick and choose. I think the minute you say something is important and the minute you put something on a wall that something is going to be important in our program…the minute you let that slide and you don’t make it important, it’s over. We’ve been relentless about that in holding guys accountable. It’s why it’s a core value of what this program is going to be about.” Now in his first head coaching role at the young age of 44, Coach Beamer started his football coaching career as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech and Tennessee before landing position jobs in the Mississippi State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Georgia, and Oklahoma football programs. “I’ve been preparing to be a head coach since I got into coaching” according to Coach Beamer, who also noted that he’s been able to rely on solid relationships built over the years with other football coaches such as Kirby Smart, Lincoln Riley, and Frank Beamer as well as basketball coaches like Sherri Coale, Dawn Staley, and Rob Ehsan, among others.

Former head basketball coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Rob Ehsan was fired right after the Conference-USA Tournament was cancelled in March 2020. One of the youngest head coaches in Division 1, Coach Ehsan faced one of his largest fears early in his career on that Friday the 13th. A time in which most undisciplined leaders would pack it in and get comfortable on the benches of mediocrity, Coach Ehsan realized that there is, in fact, resurrection after death. Rob Ehsan – the head basketball coach at UAB – had died; it was time to “let go of the envy, fantasy, the cancerous restlessness.” It was during a multiple-month vacation with his family where Coach Ehsan realized the power of discipline and consistency in his daily habits. A loving husband and a devoted father of three children, listen to Coach Ehsan speak about his journey and how he prioritizes being present with his family despite the demands of his profession. Today, Rob Ehsan serves as an analyst for the Pac-12 Network but don’t be surprised when you see him back in action as a head basketball coach. After all, death is always followed by resurrection.

The Underground Huddle is a virtual group meeting between all TBL clients and other select guests that occurs two times per year and features a guest speaker. The second Underground Huddle of 2020 (Dec. 11th) hosted 43 attendees including 29 individuals involved in TBL’s One-on-One and Group Performance Coaching programs. The guest speaker for UH #2 was Jesse Grapes, President of Benedictine Schools of Richmond. Mr. Grapes committed to serve in the United States Marine Corps the day after 9/11. He served as an infantry platoon commander and deployed for three combat tours of duty in Iraq, earning the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his actions. In his Underground Huddle talk he used a 6-minute video from HBO’s Vice News to describe the Battle of Fallujah in 2004, where he and his team used creative on-the-go thinking to ultimately destroy what was known as the “Hell House.” Encouraging the necessity to build “headspace and timing” into the personal schedules of the listeners, Grapes said that the way he does this today is through prayer, physical exercise, and continual learning. Mr. Grapes compares what TBL refers to as Disciplined Leaders to the “Ma Deuce.” A nickname for the M2 Browning machine gun, Grapes says that you can’t hide from a Ma Deuce and its impact should be powerful; however, like a true Disciplined Leader, it doesn’t operate effectively without proper headspace and timing.

The incoming freshmen each year for the Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, VA) Division 1 Men’s Basketball team must “reconfigure their relationship with pain” according to the program’s Director of Sports Performance, Daniel Roose. A self-proclaimed “Off-Season Guy,” Coach Roose spent 2009-2019 as the head strength and conditioning coach under Shaka Smart at both VCU and the University of Texas. During his first stint at VCU from 2009-2015, Roose was a cornerstone to the Rams’ defensive style of play famously known as “Havoc,” which requires its athletes to be in outstanding shape. The type of player fit for Roose’s coaching always has “a chip on his shoulder,” and these are the types of players that defeated five Power 5 schools in the NCAA Tournament on their way to VCU’s first ever Final Four in 2011. In 2019, Coach Roose returned to VCU to work for his long-time friend and current VCU Head Coach Mike Rhoades. According to Roose, the move was a no-brainer when Rhoades asked him if he wanted to “come home” while also warning Roose that if he ever missed his own kids’ games, he’d “get punched in the face.” Although his return to VCU in 2019 was with more experience and a larger focus on relationship-building, don’t confuse it with Roose’s goal for his players: he wants them to play “like a pack of Wild Dogs.” Doubling as a family man, Coach Roose is a loving husband and a dedicated father of two children – what TBL Coaching calls a Disciplined Dad. Listeners will enjoy this powerful and motivational conversation once again linking lessons learned from sports and business to life – an episode that is co-hosted by Performance Coach Larry Sanders (founder of TBL Coaching’s Disciplined Dads 90-Day Program).

Randolph-Macon College head football coach Pedro Arruza arrived in Ashland, VA in 2004 for his first head coaching job and hasn't looked back since. Since his hiring, Coach Arruza has led the Yellow Jackets to three Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships and has been named the conference Coach of the Year each of those three championship seasons. In 2019, Randolph-Macon won 9 games for the third time in four seasons and completed a decade in which they won more games than any other team in the conference. A 1995 graduate of Wheaton College, Coach Arruza was a 2x All-American and held Wheaton’s all-time rushing record for over 20 years. An avid reader and believer in surrounding yourself with coaches and mentors that can push you to the next level, Coach Arruza points to one of his favorite books "Good to Great" when talking about challenging situations. In this book, author Jim Collins talks about "The Stockdale Paradox," a mindset which Coach Arruza has adopted in his leadership role. The Stockdale Paradox states that “You must never confuse faith that you will prevail in the end - which you can never afford to lose - with the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.”

Mike Clark is the head football coach at Bridgewater College, a Division III program located right outside of Harrisonburg, VA. Currently in his 26th season as head coach of the Eagles, Coach Clark has won 6 conference championships, 164 games, and made an appearance in the 2001 National Championship game. Coach Clark’s teams have won 10 or more games in six different seasons and have gone undefeated in the regular season multiple times. In his 26 years as head coach, Bridgewater has posted 15 winning seasons; before Coach Clark’s arrival, the team only had five winning seasons in its previous 64. Coach Clark’s coaching resume began at Murray State with Coach Frank Beamer, under whom he also served as Defensive Coordinator for Virginia Tech for five seasons in the late 80s and early 90s. In his "fourth quarter" of coaching as he refers to it, Coach Clark has learned the importance of high-level leadership lessons like delegation and keeping a neutral mindset: not getting too high or too low. As he says, "Winners and losers are both imposters."

A 5-time conference champion, Hampden-Sydney College (Farmville, VA) head football coach Marty Favret says that the championships are great but what’s really important is that he has attended 32 weddings of his former players. A leader who strongly believes that having a sense of humor and relationships with your teammates and players are critical keys to building a winning culture, Coach Favret has led the Tigers to 131 wins since his arrival in 2000. In the three years prior to his hiring, the team won just four football games. A model of consistency for a long period of time, Coach Favret has spearheaded multiple graduating classes that have won over 35 games in their four-year careers and the coolest part for me is that I am a part of one of those classes. Coach Favret was my head coach at HSC where we won 35 games and 2 ODAC Championships from 2008-2011. Enjoy a great episode about leadership and winning with some reminiscing of the good old days mixed in the conversation.

Six-time National Coach of the Year Glenn Caruso is the head football coach at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota and says that in order for one to perform at a high level, they must have the ability to recalculate…and do so quickly. Since his hiring in 2008 at St. Thomas, the Tommies have won 126 football games and have made two trips to the Division III National Championship game. According to the St. Thomas athletics website, “Caruso accomplished something unheard of in college football coaching: He improved his won-loss record in each of his first seven seasons as a head coach. He inherited a Macalester program that was 0-9 the previous fall and guided the Scots to records of 2-7 then 4-5. He took over a St. Thomas program coming off a 2-8 season and has posted records of 7-3, 11-2, 12-1, 13-1 and 14-1 in his first five seasons.” In 2021, the St. Thomas football team will compete at the Division 1 level, a tall task that only coaches like Glenn Caruso would be ready, willing, and able to handle. Buckle your chin strap for this powerful conversation with a high-performing leader and coach who chooses to talk more about the good stuff off the field – family, daily actions, and eliminating apathy – more than he chooses to talk about his success on the field.

These virtual sessions are attended by 25-50 sports coaches, administrators, and leaders across the country. In this particular class, TBL Coaching Founder Ben Rogers was asked to present. According to Coach Sutton, “Living Trophies are those people who allow you to impact their lives. They listen and learn, then they apply that knowledge as they live out their best lives. Living Trophies become positive members of their communities. They give back to others and start to impact lives of those they come in contact with. Some will do this on a small scale, and others on a large scale. It can be anything from showing sincere interest to those they meet, to creating foundations to reach large numbers of people in need. Living Trophies are individuals for whom you have impacted in a positive way, and they in turn become a person that impacts others.” Ben’s presentation begins at the 2:10 mark of this episode.

Florida State Associate Head Basketball Coach Stan Jones is the longest tenured assistant coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference and his wisdom proves that. Having spent the past 18 seasons at Florida State under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton (previously with Hamilton at the University of Miami and with the Washington Wizards), Coach Jones’ college teams have only experienced two losing seasons in 24 years. Each year, the FSU basketball team comes up with a theme, with the most recent being “Our Turn” when they were named regular season ACC Champs in 2019. Going into 2020 Coach Jones says the theme is “New Blood” as they compete against many traditional powerhouses like UNC & Duke (the “Blue Bloods”) in the ACC. When describing the importance of team chemistry, Coach Jones said that the “team must take over the team” in order to find success. To encourage this, the FSU basketball team has a period in practice called “Sugar & Hot Sauce” where one player calls out another and looks him in the eye in front of the entire team, offering one positive (sugar) and one negative (hot sauce) that he is challenged to improve on. In 2019, Coach Jones was inducted into the College Basketball Assistant Coach Hall of Fame.

Associate Head Basketball Coach at the University of Virginia Jason Williford has been in the basketball coaching business for 20 years with 12 of them spent at UVA, where he was also a 4-year player. His entire time as a coach at UVA has been with 2x AP National Coach of the Year Tony Bennett who, with the help of Coach Willy, led the Cavaliers to a National Championship victory in 2019. UVA basketball is often labeled as having a “boring” style of play: not a lot of offense, not a lot of flash. They place a large emphasis on defense – and practice it daily. Quoting one of the greatest golfers of the 20th century, Ben Hogan, Coach Willy said that their team “keeps it in the dirt.” Hogan stated this to say that a majority of his time was spent in the “dirt” at the driving range. In other words, he spends a ton of time practicing. When asked about this negative stereotype of “boring” frequently given by the media about UVA basketball, Coach Willy smiled in silence, took a deep breath, and asked directly: “Would you rather be bored and win or look good and lose?”

When asked what he brings to the table as a coach, 33-year coaching veteran and current University of Rhode Island assistant basketball coach Kevin Sutton describes himself as a "high-level professional." With an impressive overall coaching record of 475-115 dating back to the late '80s, Coach Sutton has coached over 150 college scholarship recipients and 8 players that have gone on to play in the NBA. Despite his impressive track record as a coach, the end result does not excite Coach Sutton. The creator of the phrase "Living Trophies" (see TBL 022), Coach Sutton believes that while a championship trophy sits on a shelf and collects dust, creating living trophies out of his student-athletes and what they do beyond the game is what truly matters. According to the experienced coach who doubles as a family man with a wife and four children, going "Pro" is just a job while becoming a "Professional" is a career.
