Julie Bennett and her daycare group have been helping families during the holidays for the past 5 years. Last year, Julie decided to change the name to Zoey’s Christmas Angels to honor her niece Zoey and keep her legacy alive. The main goal of Zoey's Chrismas Angels is to provide Christmas gifts and dinner to families in need.
Zoey Daggett from Fairport, NY died of DIPG brain tumor July 4th, 2018, she was just 5 years old.

The Arc has been a fabric of the Rochester community for decades providing countless services and programs to individuals with developmental disabilities. Today Megan Alchowiak talks to us about the upcoming “Toast to the Arc” event. “Toast to the Arc” is an annual fundraising effort for the ARC.
Megan also shared some exciting news! The new initiative at the Arc “The Home makeover Challenge.” The goal is to raise money to assist in renovating some of the homes for the residents. Giving the homes some TLC with updates and upgrades to the accessibility.

This year the recipient is Vivian Stoch, a beautiful 8-year old girl from Webster, NY who loves cheerleading and gymnastics. Vivian is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for medulloblastoma, a pediatric form of brain cancer. Vivian was diagnosed back in April of 2018 has been through surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and has had many set backs. Please help raise money for this strong little girl and her family.

Beat Brain Cancer 5k was created in memory of Desiree Stockholm, a nurse practitioner who passed away from a rare form of brain cancer at only 31 years old.
Best Buddies International is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
We talked about the successful Friendship Walk which raised $10,000 over the goal, the free summer activities that Best Buddies offers and the upcoming Champions event which is one of the major fundraising efforts.

And this is the perfect example, the annual Clean Sweep event the city hosts every year.

Volunteers will gather to collect a free Clean Sweep t-shirt, eat a light breakfast and get their assignments before heading out to project sites in city neighborhoods.
Volunteers participating in Clean Sweep will receive a free ticket to that day's baseball game, which starts at 1:05 p.m. that afternoon. They'll also receive a voucher for food and drink at the game. Free parking will be available to those wearing Clean Sweep t-shirts.

Cameron Community Ministries is an Urban Outreach Community Center in the Lyell-Otis Neighborhood of Rochester, NY. Ninety-eight percent of residents in this neighborhood live in poverty.
Their mission is to provide hope to the community through emergency services, engagement, education and empowerment.
They offer many programs including youth after-school and summer programs, a free hot meal program that serves lunch daily, an emergency food pantry, and a clothing house that serves community members in need of clothing and housewares.
And thier new capital push is to expand their services to the teen population.

This year’s theme was inspired by a survivor who walked 11 miles in flip-flops from our shelter to the beach to attend our walk. She said she couldn’t believe the support of the community and wanted to see it for herself. She wanted to walk the whole way – it was a journey she needed to take as part of her healing process.
The Walk is a celebration of that journey, with a one-mile walk to honor and support survivors as they take the next step toward a life free from violence. With a DJ, photo booth, raffles, prizes and more, the Walk is a fun-filled, family-friendly event.

Stop the Stigma ROC (STS) is an organization that seeks to promote suicide prevention and raise awareness about mental health, specifically in youth (ages 10-25). As a youth-led organization we hope to do this through education and by providing a forum for open conversation and dialog. We feel the best way to prevent suicide is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. We hope to connect those who need help with those who are able to provide help. The STS organization volunteers will not offer counseling services. In all cases for counseling we will refer any and all individuals to trained mental health professionals.

This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Shari Hall Smith and learning more about her inspirational story.

Over the 25 years I have navigated cancer I was determined to go beyond surviving to thriving. The first time I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36, just engaged to be married. My doctor’s advice of surgery, 6 months of chemotherapy followed by 5 years of tamoxifen only changed my prognosis by 5% and it would have greatly reduced any chance of having children. I underwent the surgery and chose a holistic and alternative adjunctive therapy to improve my immune system. My husband and I are blessed to have our two daughters and grateful everyday that I made those choices.
My second diagnosis was 22 years later with metastasized breast cancer and a prognosis of no cure. My extensive research and decisions that included refusing some conventional options led me to creating a plan best for my life style, my quality of life and for me! What I found along the way is that my overall health improved and my long term autoimmune disorders either disappeared or the medication has been decreased to handle the symptoms. I have never felt better!
Knowledge is power! Use this information to gather options that enable you to make well informed decisions about your own individual treatment plan.

Dawn suffers from ulcerative colitis among other medical issues that requires her to undergo several surgeries. While there are a lot of expenses she and her husband need to pay for, the real need is for a more accessible shower to be installed in her house.

Jesse and Katie Stearns ( and Evelina!!) need our help!! Love was a long time coming for Jesse and Katie Stearns----but one day not long ago the stars aligned, and they were sent to each other. They married in the summer of 2015 and had the trip of a lifetime to Italy for their honeymoon. They emanate LOVE. They do the things that all couples wish they could do......they kiss in public, they are always arm in arm or hand in hand.....and they DANCE.....they once danced on a subway......totally in love and not afraid to show it !! The kind of love we all hope for. Not long after their honeymoon, Jesse was diagnosed with brain cancer. He has a tumor that is called a grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma. He endured not one, but two brain surgeries in the Spring of 2016. However, not all of the tumor could be resected. He has received both radiation and chemotherapy since that time and will now be looking at multiple clinical trials in the hopes that one will be found that will provide him with a long and full life. You see..... in the midst of chaos and real fear, an angel named Evelina was born to Katie and Jesse on June 27th, 2017--the first GIRL on both sides of the family!! How loved she is!! At one point Jesse and Katie were on different floors in the same hospital!! Jess was there with complications due to brain swelling, and Katie was being induced!! Even during that time, they were able to out-love the rest of us. Their kindness and thoughtfulness towards one another is inspirational. As can be imagined, Jesse is not able to work at this time. Katie will return to work soon. They have experienced significant loss of income. They will have not only daily expenses, but they will have the added cost of daycare, travel and parking expenses for treatments now and when a clinical trial is decided on, medication costs as well as multiple appointment copays. Please join us in raising funds to help lift the financial burdens for this beautiful couple and their new baby. We are grateful for the prayers of family and friends and for all who are willing to help with anything and everything! Your generosity is so appreciated.
