Lentils à la Dijonnaise (mustard and speck lentils) I have a feeling this is the first time I’ve cooked lentils. My friend GC regularly shares with me her photos of salmon, broccolini and lentils meals and I’m always a bit jelly because in my mind lentils require a lot of effort and I’m a somewhat […]
This post describes my first pizza 🍕 dough. I can’t tell you how many pizzas I’ve eaten in 55 years. I’ve never made one though. I remember as a young man I could eat whole large pizzas with ease. I loved eating a pizza on my own or with friends. I happily ate pizzas with […]
I don’t normally beat my meat to get it juicy and tender. I was watching Jamie Oliver on TV last night and he made a dish with chicken breast, breadcrumbs, and garlic. It involved using a rolling pin to beat the meat to tenderise it and to beat the breadcrumbs and garlic into the meat. […]
There is nothing special about tonight’s meal or this post. I’ve been so busy I’ve not been able to find inspiration in anything I want to cook so when I went grocery shopping I picked up a steak and some salad stuff. Yummy Lummy is not sponsored by anyone. Recipe It’s important to read the […]
Prawn scallop and speck fried cauliflower rice after a relaxing Saturday at home Prawn scallop and speck fried cauliflower rice Today was the first day since the long weekend that I’ve been able to work from home and not go into the office. I did dial into a teleconference but I got stuff done. The […]
Reverse seared steak isn’t something I do very often. I usually sear first and then finish off the cooking in oven. Dedicated to SARS-COV-2 which causes COVID-19 because I got home late and didn’t have time to cook the steak by sous vide. Find out more about the new names below Reverse seared steak versus […]
Triple pork fried cauliflower rice Triple pork fried cauliflower rice sounds a bit weird but it was the best I could come up with at short notice. It’s been a bit crazy at work and I only got home at about 4 pm and didn’t feel like doing a long cook. I will be cooking some […]

Norfolk Island I spent the last four days in Norfolk Island. This was a follow up trip to the week I spent there in December. Olive Café This time I was there for three nights. I stayed in a different place and rather than eat a continental breakfast at the motel, my work colleagues and […]

Welcome to the Random Yummy. Tonight I share how I use the Tupperware Microwave Pressure Cooker and a Magic Bullet to make celeriac mash flavoured with Vegemite.
Tonight I did something a little differently and served my chicken and Brussels sprouts with some enhanced baked beans.
Eating eggs every morning can get a little boring so every now and then I like to make my eggs taste and feel a little better. So what do I mean by feel? I mean mouthfeel. Mouthfeel is really important. I like my food to have texture. Eggs can be pretty bland when it comes to texture, so adding some crunch really makes a difference.
I got a handful of Brussels sprouts, cut them in half and tossed them in a mixing bowl with some olive oil and then rubbed them all over with the oil. I then laid them out on a baking tray with the cut surface facing up. I sprinkled some iodised salt on them and then put them into a hot oven until I could penetrate one easily with a tine of a fork. It was about 20 minutes at 200 °C.

Crispy pork crackling may help smarten kids Crispy pork crackling may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you are pregnant but this week it was salty goodness that had me thinking. I need to back up a bit to explain. [maxbutton id=”3″ url=”#recipe” ][maxbutton id=”12″ url=”#photograph” ] [maxbutton id=”9″ url=”#questions-and-answers” ] […]
Pork red curry to die for. This was a really nice recipe that was quick and easy to make. Anyone can do this and it wasn't too expensive.
So, last week I posted about how I had finished February in my usual eating routine. This week has been a little unusual. A day in Sydney, a dinner out I didn’t end up getting to, and senate estimates put my week out of whack.
I originally wrote this on 12 October 2012, the tenth anniversary of the 2002 Bali bombings and I had it on the Old Yummy Lummy blog. I thought I should update the post a little and bring it over to my current blog. I’d welcome comments and feedback. This post is not like my regular […]
Click on the play button above for the audio podcast. The YouTube video is below. Pork and cabbage soup on Canberra labour day 2016, what a great idea! A great way to use leftover slowly cooked pork shoulder. It’s been two long weekends in a row. Not a bad thing. This weekend also marked the […]
It's not a difficult thing to make a cheeseburger but I just wanted to share how I did it. This wasn't the most elaborate burger, it didn't have the essential ingredients of an Australian burger which included slices of beetroot and a ring of pineapple plus a fried egg and some bacon.
Spam and chicken again! Even though cheesy chicken wings make great footy food, there isn’t any football worth watching tonight. So the manflu continues. Last night was awful, I coughed all night. This morning as I lumbered out of bed my throat felt like it was on fire, my neck was stiff from a really poor ‘sleeping’ […]
What does spam have to do with manflu? I have manflu, I hate being sick. I try not to use the word hate much, but I really do not like being ill. I wonder, will spam help? It started as a cough that kept me awake on Tuesday night. On Wednesday it progressed and I had […]
My daughters and I have been planning an overseas holiday for about a year. Originally we were going to Florida in the middle of December as part of a gymnastics event. Unfortunately that fell through. As an alternative we agreed on Hong Kong. There are a lot of good reasons for Hong Kong. Food. Hong Kong Disney. Food. Ocean Park. Food. No jet lag because it's in AWST. Food. It's only an eight hour flight from Brisbane as opposed to more than double that to Florida. Food. Shopping at markets. Food. Photography. Food. Mostly importantly, I'd have much more time with my daughters than if we all went as part of a large gymnastic team event. Did I mention food?
A lot of my friends in university ate a lot of instant noodles instead of proper meals. I've seen documentaries where instant noodles form the basis of a whole cuisine for some people. I like them but I don't love them. That said, I always have some in the shelf of shame because they're cheap and I couldn't be bothered buying fancy noodles.
Today is day two of our Hawaiian holiday adventure and we marked it with our first experience of Jack in the Box. We drove up the east coast of Oahu to get to our condominium accommodation in Turtle Bay. I was reminded by a friend today that Jack in the box is best known to microbiologists because of an outbreak of Escherichia coli infection caused by the O157:H7 strain in 1993 which infected 732 people. I'll let you know if I feel crook.
I had a piece of salmon and some streaky bacon that needed eating
I made mistake tonight. I started with my piece of Sunday salmon and thought I'd dust it with some flour. Then I remembered the bacon I needed to eat. I chucked that into the bag with the salmon and flour and ended up with a ghostly white piece of salmon and dusty streaky bacon. At that point I should have changed my mind from baking and gone to frying in a little oil with a lid on the frying pan to moisten the Sunday salmon. Instead I went with my first thought and didn't think it through. A bad mistake.
It’s been cold in Canberra the last few nights. It’s the middle of summer and the mornings have been <10 °C (<50 °F). I've heard that Thredbo (~200 km SWS) has been having 0 °C (32 °F) mornings. I've been trying to enjoy summer salads for dinner but my mind is playing tricks on me. A night out for a hot meal is in order...at Eightysix in Braddon.
It's a Friday night after a big week.
Bron and I enjoy a meal at Les Bistronomes in Braddon.
