ABOUT THIS MESSAGE: Friendship is hard. Whether you're new to Denver trying to break into locked-in friend groups, a new parent just trying to survive, or an empty nester wondering where everyone went — most of us feel like we're spinning our wheels when it comes to real friendship. In this message, we compare the world's vision of friendship with the Word's vision. The world says friendship is optional, transactional, and increasingly digital — and it's leaving us lonelier than ever. But Scripture shows us something better: friendship that is essential, intentional, and in-the-flesh, rooted in the truth that we are made in the image of a relational God.ABOUT THE HEIGHTS CHURCH: We are a church making disciples of Jesus for the renewal of Denver. To learn more about The Heights Church, you can go to TheHeightsDenver.comEveryone wants to live a life that flourishes but few know the pathway into that kind of life. Most people are living in spiritual, financial, relational and emotional ruin. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us a vision for how we were made to live and serves as our guide on the pathway back to flourishing. As we walk the path with Jesus this Fall, we are going to find that the way into flourishing is different than most people think. In fact, in many ways it is the exact opposite of what we are told in our cultural moment. Jonathan Pennington describes it this way, “The Sermon's answer to the human-flourishing question is that true human flourishing is only available through communion with the Father God through his revealed Son, Jesus, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This flourishing is only experienced through faithful, heart-deep, whole-person discipleship, following Jesus’ teachings and life, which situate the disciple into God’s community or kingdom.” D.A. Carson calls the Sermon on the mount “Jesus’ confrontation with the world.” Each week we will look at a broken vision of flourishing and compare it with Jesus’ vision in the Sermon. We will use Jesus’ mnemonic device “You have heard that it was said, but I say to you” in order to compare and contrast the world's vision of flourishing with Jesus’ vision of flourishing.

The following episode is a live recorded sermon from the Sunday gathering at The Heights Church Denver on 08/18/24The Spirit Empowers us for Mission: Acts 1 | Holy SpiritJonathan HuntThe Holy Spirit has famously been called “the forgotten God.” Christians give a lot of attention to the Father who pursues and loves his prodigal children. We, of course, love Jesus who came and accomplished our salvation through a cross and resurrection. But when it comes to the Spirit many Christians are at a loss. The Spirit feels like the proverbial “third-wheel” on the trinitarian date. And much of this is because of the lack of good teaching on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. But without the Holy Spirit, we cannot be adopted into the Fathers family or receive the forgiveness for our sins that Jesus accomplished on the cross. In the words of Father Ignatius Hazim, “Without the Holy Spirit, God is distant, Christ is in the past, the Gospel is a dead letter, the Church is simply an organization, authority is always domination, mission is propaganda, worship is the summoning of spirits, and Christian action is the morality of slaves.” We need the Holy Spirit. For more information about The Heights Church, or to contact us, visit our website at TheHeightsDenver.com

A full year devoted to learning the power and practices of prayer. This is a year where we will collectively explore how to access the power and provision that is available to us in prayer. A year of taking up the invitation of Jesus when he says in Matthew 7, “Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”But if we are honest, most people don’t know how to accept Jesus’ invitation into the praying life. We try to pray and fail. We need a model. Thankfully, the New Testament contains some of the most powerful prayers that have ever been prayed. These are Holy Spirit inspired prayers. The following episode is a live recorded sermon from the Sunday gathering at The Heights Church Denver on 03/24/24The Book (2 Chronicles 34) | Revive Your WorkCorbin HobbsLife for the people of God in the Scriptures is often cyclical. Seasons of decline will be followed by seasons of revival. And often, the determining factor for decline turning into revival is a small remnant of people who decide that they want to seek God for a fresh outpouring of his power and works in their generation. These people would pray prayers like the one we find in Habakkuk 3:2: Lord, I have heard the report about you; Lord, I stand in awe of your deeds. Revive your work in these years; make it known in these years. This is our cry during this season. We want to see God revive his work among us in our city and nation. To do this we are going to study six stories of revival in the Old Testament. Throughout these stories we will examine the 6 key ingredients to the “Stew” of revival: 1. Holiness2. Consecration 3. Faith 4. Resolve 5. Dependence 6. Humility For more information about The Heights Church, or to contact us, visit our website at TheHeightsDenver.com

A time marked by things like hate, slander, gossip and overall relational anger and exhaustion. We can’t seem to get along. And when you stop and think about it, all of our greatest problems are relational at their root - racism, classicism, politics, abuse, war - everything rises and falls on the quality of our relationships. The most valuable thing we have in this life is relationships. They are crucial to a life well-lived. Our theme for this year as a church is “The Year of Life Together.” This year is about creating a haven of relational beauty in the church that shines the light of Jesus into the relational strife of the world. To do this, it’s vital that we learn, as people of God, how to live in the Spirit. In Galatians 5, Paul states that we cannot have two operating systems within ourselves or our church; either we choose the Spirit or our flesh, which is any independent coping mechanism for life apart from God.This Summer we’re going to look at each of these fruits of the spirit from Galatians 5, and learn to live by the spirit instead of the way of the world and the flesh. Join us each Sunday as we learn to be people of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.For more information about The Heights Church, or to contact us, visit our website at TheHeightsDenver.com

We live in a cultural moment that is marked by relational distrust and division.

In Galatians 5, Paul states that we cannot have two operating systems within ourselves or our church; either we choose the Spirit or our flesh, which is any independent coping mechanism for life apart from God.

This Summer we’re going to look at each of these fruits of the spirit from Galatians 5, and learn to live by the spirit instead of the way of the world and the flesh. Join us each Sunday as we learn to be people of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

1 Corinthians 8 | Our Messy Life Together Corbin Hobbs

Throughout the New Testament, we see a beautiful vision laid out for the church. A community of mutual love, care, healing, and devotion that ensures, as Acts chapter 2 states, “there was not a needy person among them.” However, it doesn’t take long to look around and see a disconnect between the biblical vision for church and the sad reality that these communities are often messy and broken. 1 Corinthians is, in many ways, a love letter to a messy community. A community full of broken people that are trying to follow Jesus together. What we see is that God doesn’t abandon his church when things get messy -- but rather he leans in and calls them to something better.

Do you want to flourish? Or, do you want to wither? The narrative of scripture gives us two paths to these two different ends -- the path of obedience and the path of disobedience. When we obey God, our lives can flourish and create beauty. However, when we distrust and disobey God, we wither up and dehumanize ourselves. The choice is ours. Today we look at the end of Exodus, closing out our year long series, and look at what it means to obey God.

If we're being honest, one of the biggest barriers to us engaging with scripture is boredom. But the Bible itself paints a very different picture of what time with God can look like -- so why the disconnect? Why do we read about engaging with the Bible as being full of peace, joy, and guidance, but our actual experience doesn't feel anything like that?

It’s easy to feel stuck when it comes to our relationship to God. We often feel as though no matter how hard we try, we just don’t see the renewal that we want in our lives.

But have you ever stopped to consider if you even trust God?

Skipping from hearing to obeying without first trusting that what God is saying is good and meant for your flourishing is a sure-fire way to become stuck in what feels like a kind of cyclical failure.

The good news is, the Christmas story shows us that God is trustworthy. By leaving what was rightfully his and becoming a helpless infant, God is demonstrating for us that he is for us, and that he will go to any lengths to bring us back to himself.

Listen as we walk through the account of the shepherds in Luke 2 to see a model for how to live life with God and experience renewal.

The truth is, we often go through life trying to do things by our own strength. When this is our reality, we often become tired, burnt out, and feel helpless against the sins and struggles that mark our lives. But is this really what Jesus has for us? Did Jesus come to earth to just teach us how to live, only to disappear and hope we could live life on our own? The good news is, living life in our own strength is not what Jesus has for us.

In Today's teaching, we look at John 16 to study the Holy Spirit and what his presence means for our day-to-day lives.

Death is something that we all fear, yet we are all destined for it? Time Keller says, "Death is the Great Interruption, tearing loved ones away from us, or us from them...Death is the Great Insult, because it reminds us, as Shakespeare said, that we are worm food. . ."

What does Jesus have to say bout the reality of death? What does his life, death, and resurrection mean for how we understand death? In this teaching, Corbin unpacks what it means for us that Jesus died, descended down in to death, and was raised 3 days later.
