So you’re ready to retire from your business. What happens now? Do you have someone in mind to inherit the business? Do your children even want the business? These questions and more will be answered in today’s conversation!

On this episode, Chad Lingafelt chats with Stephen Shortt, a succession planning coach from Dublin, Ireland. Stephen not only has the smoothest voice with a beautiful accent, but also shares some insights that can help you decide what needs to happen before

People hate thinking about the finality of life, but ignoring what needs to happen when you are ready to retire or pass the business on can be a costly mistake.

Stephen shares the 4 possibilities that can happen to a Family Business:

  1. Shut Down: Business shuts down once the leader leaves or steps down
  2. Sell: The leader sells to an investor
  3. Survive: Someone put in place just to keep going (just a painful stop)
  4. Scale: The right people in right positions to scale and grow the business

Shift thinking from being the hero of everyone’s story to being the mentor for the next generation.

This is a great conversation for any business owner that is looking to the future and what needs to transpire once they decide to retire.

Is your desk covered in papers and items you keep meaning to put away? Is your car overflowing with old drinks, trash, and whatever’s sliding around in the back seat? Is your garage able to store your car or is it holding boxes of ‘heirlooms’ that you inherited?

Learn how you can start letting go of objects since memories can be carried in your head and heart. Reassess what you can give away and donate.

Julie recommends an annual purging with the following qualifications:

  • Do I use it,
  • Do I need it
  • Do I want it?

Chad Lingafelt chats with Levi Gray, Product Manager at Loc-Doc Security, about the impact our Book Club has had with the implementation of EOS in our organization.

On this episode, we talk about how you can start to transform your organization with EOS. Chad was introduced to EOS many years ago and has been intentional in taking steps to introducing this model into our organization. We talk about how you can get your organization 100% on the same page with where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.

So what is EOS? EOS stands for Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). It is a set of simple concepts and practical tools used by companies around the world to clarify, simplify, and achieve their vision. Using EOS helps you to look at your business in a whole new way – through the lens of the Six Key Components™.

6 Key Components include:

  1. Vision - 8 Questions & Shared by all - Strengthening this component means getting everyone in the organization 100% on the same page with where you’re going and how you’re going to get there.
  2. Traction - Rocks & Meetings - This means bringing discipline and accountability into the organization – becoming great at execution – taking the vision down to the ground and making it real.
  3. Data - Scorecards & Measurables - This means cutting through all the feelings, personalities, opinions, and egos and boiling your organization down to a handful of objective numbers that give you an absolute pulse on where things are.
  4. Process - Documented & Followed by All - This is the secret ingredient in your organization. This means “systemizing” your business by identifying and documenting the core processes that define the way to run your business. You'll need to get everyone on the same page with what the essential procedural steps are, and then get everyone to follow them to create consistency and scalability in your organization.
  5. Issues - Issues List & IDS - Strengthening this component means becoming great at solving problems throughout the organization – setting them up, knocking them down, and making them go away forever.
  6. People - Right People & Right Seat - Simply put, we can’t do it without great people. This means surrounding yourself with great people, top to bottom, because you can’t achieve a great vision without a great team.

These components must be managed and strengthened in order for you to be a great business no matter if you’re a small business or a large corporation.

This is an important conversation for leaders that want to transform their organization. Find out how a minor investment has created a huge value for our company and for individual development.

12 years ago, ASSA ABLOY started an industry network group to connect with their users. They started something called MSC Network (Medeco Security Center Program), built with a group of diverse security professional businesses. Their purpose, to invest in the businesses to grow with tools, share ideas, and bring them together to have mutual gains.

On this episode of Coffee Break, Ben Sultze, Director of Aftermarket Development with ASSA ABLOY, shares what you should look for when joining an Industry Network. Ben leads by example and has forged a path for his team to follow by creating relationships and opportunities to cultivate trust within the industry groups.

Here are 3 Takeaways:

  1. Identify Champions - Inside of the group, there has to be champions that can tailor your message in order to reach a diverse community.
  2. Understanding Members Business Models - Having a local engagement team that is passionate about learning what the business needs and can communicate effectively with the groups within the network adds tremendous value.
  3. Continuously Creating Value: Small groups within the network naturally form but proactively cultivating groups and learning from your peers is a huge priority. The value of the network is only as strong as the engagement level.

Do you struggle with wanting to improve your Leadership skills or develop personally to be a better leader? On this episode of Coffee Break, Chad Lingafelt shares the 5 books that helped him develop personally and the impact it had on the way he leads our organization.

Book 1: Turn the Ship Around - L. David Marquet

Turn the Ship Around! is the true story of how the Santa Fe skyrocketed from worst to first in the fleet by challenging the U.S. Navy's traditional leader-follower approach. Struggling against his own instincts to take control, he instead achieved the vastly more powerful model of giving control. No matter your business or position, you can apply Marquet's radical guidelines to turn your own ship around. The payoff: a workplace where everyone around you is taking responsibility for their actions, where people are healthier and happier, where everyone is a leader.

Book 2: Powerful - Patty McCord

McCord advocates practicing radical honesty in the workplace, saying good-bye to employees who don’t fit the company’s emerging needs, and motivating with challenging work, not promises, perks, and bonus plans. Her road-tested advice, offered with humor and irreverence, provides readers a different path for creating a culture of high performance and profitability. Powerful will change how you think about work and the way a business should be run.

Book 3: Radical Candor - Kim Scott

The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Using Radical Candor—avoiding the perils of Obnoxious Aggression, Manipulative Insincerity, and Ruinous Empathy—you can be kind and clear at the same time. Radical Candor is about caring personally and challenging directly, about soliciting criticism to improve your leadership and also providing guidance that helps others grow. It focuses on praise but doesn't shy away from criticism—to help you love your work and the people you work with.

Book 4: The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team - Patrick M. Lencioni

Lencioni's utterly gripping tale serves as a timeless reminder that leadership requires as much courage as it does insight. Throughout the story, Lencioni reveals the five dysfunctions which go to the very heart of why teams even the best ones-often struggle. He outlines a powerful model and actionable steps that can be used to overcome these common hurdles and build a cohesive, effective team.

Book 5: Traction - Gino Wickman

Do you have a grip on your business, or does your business have a grip on you? In Traction, you’ll learn the secrets of strengthening the six key components of your business. You’ll discover simple yet powerful ways to run your company that will give you and your leadership team more focus, more growth, and more enjoyment.

You Don't have to dread having Meetings! On this episode of Coffee Break, Chad Lingafelt chats with Thomas Heavey, our Training Director, about how we've transformed our Team and Company Culture through informative Meetings. We dive deep into Why we do Team Meetings, How we do Team meetings, & the Benefits of these meetings.

We have 3 Major Meetings at Loc-Doc Security:

  1. All Team Meeting on Monday Morning to Kick off the Week (15 minute Conference Call)
  2. All Team Meeting on Wednesday Morning (90 minute Group Gathering at Headquarters)
  3. Leadership Meeting Following the All Team on Wednesdays (30 minutes)

How you manage your meetings reflects the leadership and management of your Organization! If the meeting is inconsistent with starting on time, or there is no specific goals set or outcome for the meeting, your business is probably run in the same fashion. You can send a clear message about your culture to your team by the way that you or your leadership conducts meetings. Be sure that your team members know in advance what is expected ; having clear expectations of start and end times can help inspire efficient and productive meetings.

Here are 7 Tips that have helped to improve our meetings!

Tip 1: Start on Time

We ensure each meeting starts on time and ends on time, that everyone is on the call or in their seat because we respect each team members time. It's a simple but effective message to send when your meetings start on time and end on time. We strive to honor our dismissal time so that our team and our customers won't be impacted by any late arrivals.

One of the first things that we do to kick off our Wednesday Team Meetings, is to have each team member share 1 positive thing that happened during the week. Starting the conversation on a positive and encouraging note helps to drive the right culture of positivity leaving everyone in a great frame of mind and receptive to learning.

Tip 2: Keep it On Track

We have a set agenda or format to keep the meeting on track. After discussing and informing the team of new items to be aware of or upcoming events, we usually break into small groups to focus on specialized training for each department. This ensures that we utilize the time wisely and our small groups can focus on developing their skill set within their own realm. For example, we have different education specifically for team members in the electronics division, locksmith division, and even accounting department. Instead of broad education with all team members, we get down to the micro level.

Tip 3: Use a Shareable Platform

We use Google slides to present in meetings which is easy to utilize, has the ability to have multiple contributors, and everyone is able to manage their portion of the presentation.

Tip 4: Collaborate with your Leadership

We gather once a week with our leaders to communicate 4 things in each department.

  1. A Big Win - Something Accomplished that they've been working on.
  2. Benchmarks - What is expected and is it being met?
  3. What they need help with
  4. Next Big Thing - What they are working on?

We ensure this meeting is brief and efficient by making it technology free (no cell phones or distractions). This helps us stay in unity throughout the week and has helped to speed up the growth of our organization by creating motion.

For the rest of the tips, go to locdoc.net/blog for more information about our meetings, or for shareable examples of our meetings, contact us through email info@locdoc.net
