In this episode we welcome back renown marketer Kirt Daunt to talk about putting marketing to work in your firm. In particular, we drill into what comes next after putting the marketing foundations (brand, website, case studies etc) in place.

To squeeze the utmost out of this interview with Kirt, we pitched him headlong into real life scenarios that listeners will relate to, such as –

  • Introducing current clients to a new service, as well increasing the uptake of services provided by other divisions of one’s firm
  • What to do if the work that you do is a “best kept secret” in your community plus how to tactfully play your hand while serving on the committee of the golf club or on the board of your children’s school
  • What comes next when a prospective client makes an expression of interest, such as downloading a strategy paper or coming along to one of your events

Throughout the interview, Kirt shares many timeless marketing principles which have served him well at the top end of town, linking them to the scenarios being considered for a professional services firm. Literally, there are too many to list here but here’s a sample –

  • “When someone’s adding value in your life, that’s a relationship you come back to”
  • “What do your customers care about?”
  • “Marketing is the pursuit of ruthless experimentation”
  • “Your marketing plan is as much about the things you are not going to do as the things you will do.”

During the interview, Kirt made mention of a summary of some key concepts covered in his earlier podcast (Episode 69). To access the summary, follow this link.

In the Coach’s Corner segment of this episode, Scott Charlton encourages you to download Slipstream Group’s Marketing Diagnostic to get a snapshot of where your marketing would benefit from attention. You can access the Diagnostic by following this link.

In this episode we talk with marketing expert Kirt Daunt about developing a winning brand. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss two aspects that one should obsess over –

Making it real, Kirt spontaneously pulls in a wide range of examples – not just from the accounting and financial planning world but glass manufacturing; weightlifting equipment and even James Bond! The discussion truly is a celebration of how marketing can be interesting, appealing and, as Kirt clearly states….Fun!

Selling Professional Services Show Notes

In this episode we talk with Ryan Devillers of Slipstream Coaching about selling professional services. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss what makes a good salesperson and how partners of busy accounting and financial services firms tend to focus on current clients rather than prospective clients.

Ryan also shares some interesting thoughts about looking internally for someone who might be best to engage with prospective clients. If you are thinking that such a person should be a principal in the firm…think again!

Later, in the Coach’s Corner, Scott passes on some observations of his own from working in some dynamic, sales-orientated organisations. In particular he discusses how and why such companies achieve revenue growth that is leaps and bounds ahead of professional practices where “doing the work” is the predominant activity.

In the interview Ryan mentioned a book he is currently reading, being Atomic Habits by James Clear. He also mentioned reading Your Professional Headspaceby Scott Charlton. The podcast he enjoys listening to is The Tim Ferriss Show.

Achieving through others – leading your financial services firmShow Notes

In this episode we talk with Jacqui Sherlock of Sherlock Wealth and Irma Bantjes of Stratus Financial Group about leadership in professional service firms.Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss engaging managers from a non-technical background to the role of CEO and the areas of the business that receive more attention as a consequence of the leader not having a client caseload.

We consider when such an appointment should be made and the important role that the CEO can play in developing the team – as Jacqui says, “Creating star makers not being the star”

Getting the best out of one’s team is a theme that features throughout the discussion. Both Jacqui and Irma share many terrific ideas from what they are doing in their respective firms to foster performance.

We also contrast traditional ways that firms have dealt with issues such as recruitment; performance reviews; team training and marketing with how these are dealt with by a professional manager. The differences are quite profound.

In the interview Jacqui and Irma also mentioned some books from which they have found insights, details of which appear below –

Introducing Michael Spinks, our new Slipstream coach Show Notes

In this episode we get to know Slipstream Coaching’s latest coach, Michael Spinks. Michael brings a fascinating range of experiences to his role as a coach, including running his own professional services firm, being a senior executive in an AFSL and a distinguished career in the Navy.

Michael shares the history of Collins SBA, the firm he took from a very small accountancy practice focusing on individual tax returns to being a leading multidisciplinary firm with multiple owners. This leads on to Michael sharing his experience with respect business planning; succession and evolving to a corporate model. Michael’s thoughts regarding the client experience in a multi-environment (“Tell their story once”) are well worth listening to.

Other points we cover regarding the Collins SBA journey which are bound to be of interest include the role of technology, organisation structure and creating a “culture of innovation”.

At one point during this wide ranging discussion we canvass the role that Michael played in facilitating groups of managing partners of accounting firm across the Asia Pacific region during the COVID-19 crisis. These forums proved to be immensely valuable for the participants and underlined the importance of having a relevant peer group for support and to share ideas.

We finished by discussing the many and varied means by which Michael keeps fit, engaged and growing as a person, all of which will doubtless contribute to the energy and enthusiasm he brings to his coaching role.

All in all, this episode showcases the wonderful experience and attributes that Michael adds to the Slipstream Coaching team. Even more after this interview, we’re excited about the prospects for clients that Michael is going to be working with.

“Websites that work” – a conversation with Matt Wilkinson Show Notes

In this episode we talk with Matt Wilkinson of Bizink about websites that work. Amongst a range of interesting topics, we discuss the role one’s website plays as part of an overall marketing program; the respective importance of content and design of a website; having “hero content” on your site, together with common mistakes and misconceptions.

Throughout the discussion, Matt also shares some powerful opinions about websites, such as “You don’t need to be different. You just need to be good” and to be extremely wary about “SEO experts” who may promise much but deliver little. In this episode we engage in a wide ranging discussion with Julienne Barton of Sureal about Harnessing the power of you and your team. Amongst a number of interesting topics, we discuss personal success, career development, teamwork, leadership and recruitment – all significant aspects of human resources for accounting and financial planning practitioners.

Along the way, Julienne also shares some interesting scenarios based on “Patricia Practitioner” and her business partner “Ian” to illustrates how working relationships can be enhanced with greater understanding of oneself and others. Julienne makes the point that it’s not so much about interacting with colleagues on how oneself likes to be dealt with but rather, being able to see things from someone else’s perspective and deal with them as they like to be dealt with.

A key part of Julienne’s consulting framework is based around her extensive knowledge and use of Instinctive Drives encapsulated by the “ID system”. There are numerous examples and explanations provided by Julienne which are illuminated by knowing the ID’s of the practitioners involved.

In this interview, we open a discussion on a topic which will be relevant to all practitioners at the end of their journey in professional practice, which is “How do I get out?” The particular aspect being explored in this discussion is the exit of sole practitioner accountants and financial planners. However, there are aspects which have universal application, such as having an exit plan and looking objectively at shedding (or continuing with) the various responsibilities that go with being a practitioner.
