hat's your responsibility when your boss is about to be featured on Dateline? Kevin and I pondered the employee obligations of the Colorado dentist accused of killing his wife via poison. We aren't seeing too much of this in the traditional dental journals but we're not afraid to bring it up. Don't worry - we actually got serious about the topic though. We hear from employees who see shady behavior all the time.

Another example is the just-sentenced Knoxville dentist who instructed employees to go against dental guidelines when seeing patients. There are times when you have to take a stand.

Dental legislators had a busy year in 2022 and it looks like 2023 is going to be more of the same. It will be at least 2+ years before we see the impact of Question 2 in the Massachusetts election (see episode 42). Until then, we’re going to focus on international implant travel. That’s right - our titanium travelers are on the loose! Don’t click into that third link if you have a sensitive stomach. Yuck.

Like how butt massages could benefit oral health. We’re skeptical but it’s our job to bring you the news. Is this an untapped revenue source? Or just one dentist’s wishful thinking? We don’t recommend prison but if you have to go then make sure your oral health is in good shape. Rapper YNW Melly is sitting in jail with diamond encrusted crowns and claiming that he is being denied his basic oral health rights. Although at this point, I suspect those crowns are crustier than a Spongebob episode. Why can’t they just give him a toothbrush? It may not be that simple. We then pivoted to the very hot topic of ‘quiet quitting.’ What do you think? Is it mediocrity? Detachment? A legit trend? We give you some points - as always - to chew on!

Talk about a bad apple. Thanks to one dental chain our industry has suffered another black mark. How do you handle patients who are angry and mistrustful? Delicately and with your own safety in mind. We then traveled from Indiana to California for what I thought was a timely story but I was duped! It was a recycled article but we still had a good time with it. Enjoy!

This is what we want you to chew on:

A dental chain closes shop but keeps all the moolah. Not cool.
Offices need to prepare for the possibility of workplace violence. It’s not overkill to have a disaster or armed shooter practice drill. Corporations and schools have them. Your employees are important.
The CA prison system is getting rid of dentists and utilizing hygienists to treat inmates. (NOTE: this story had apparently been recycled on a site. It is NOT a current news story. Sorry I didn’t catch that earlier.)

Do we really need to be as busy as we used to be? We tackle that question in light of some new stats from the ADA’s Health Policy Institute. Confusion was in the air while discussing a clinic who laid off half their staff. Why would they do that? What employee would come back after that? Compliance and audits were next up on the agenda. A report on Henry Schein gave us some talking points on the supply world and what it looks like for both corporate and independent practices. EP 18: What If A Monkey Can’t Do Your Job?

Working in a dental office is hard. New employees have to learn weird terminology, work with weird tools and handle weird patients. No wonder staffing is difficult. We talked about a report from Dentalpost.net that surveyed the industry about dentistry’s workplace. It has a ton of statistics for RDHs, assistants, dentists and administrative team members. Spoiler alert - we need more people to work in our offices. We need them soon.

In this episode we talk about which states had the best wages and how COVID affected the work-life balance of most employees. Dental offices are stuck in this weird limbo where salaries and job descriptions don’t seem to mesh. We’re not sure how to fix it but we give our best ideas on the topic.

We also talk about how nice the world would be if we could issue perio cards instead of vaccine cards. I’d dine in a no-perio zone - wouldn’t you?

The very sad story of a 7 year old’s death during a procedure brings a spotlight on medical emergency training. All team members play a part when it goes south. Teresa walks through a sample scenario so you can apply it to your team. We then talk about health literacy - it’s not just reading level. It’s how your patients understand what the heck you’re telling them. Literacy includes hearing, reading, understanding and questioning your recommendations as well as your financial recommendations. As our titles get wackier, the content keeps flowing! These patient polls are coming at us from all sides. One of the latest stated that some Florida patients (specifically women) are willing to forgo using their insurance benefits to avoid going to the dentist. That’s not great for keeping the office busy. New Mexico also wasn't very helpful by ordering another shutdown. The silver lining is that maybe you were able to finish some projects and put together some protocols for the future.
