What does it really take to walk away from stability and build something from scratch?

In this episode of Raw and Real Entrepreneurship®, Susan Sly sits down with Alisa Sparks, Founder and CEO of Linden Creek. They unpack Alisa's journey from managing multi-million-dollar budgets for Naval aircraft to building a luxury interior design, home staging, and Airbnb setup brand. Linden Creek is now franchising nationwide.

Alisa shares the unfiltered reality behind her leap from finance into entrepreneurship, including early cash flow challenges, bootstrapping the business as a mother of young children, and the moment she realized she had accidentally built a company that could scale beyond herself. This is not a conversation about pretty rooms. It is about leadership, emotional resilience, hard hiring and firing decisions, and the internal work required to grow a business without losing what matters most.

You will also hear how Linden Creek evolved into a franchise, why cultural fit matters more than skills, how technology became a growth lever through proprietary software, and what it really costs founders when they never stop to celebrate progress. Alisa speaks candidly about motherhood, divorce, delegation, and the pressure of carrying responsibility for other people’s livelihoods.

In this episode, you will learn:

  • What it feels like to leave a secure career for an uncertain entrepreneurial path
  • How Alisa bootstrapped a fast-growing luxury design business
  • The mistakes founders make when hiring and holding on too long
  • How to scale a brand into a franchise without losing its soul
  • Why systems, boundaries, and self-leadership determine long-term success

If you are a founder, creative entrepreneur, or professional standing at the edge of a big decision, this conversation will meet you where you are. Honest, grounded, and deeply human, this episode serves as a reminder that growth is rarely linear and leadership always begins within.

Listen now and discover what building a luxury brand really demands behind the scenes.

Alisa Sparks is the Founder and CEO of Linden Creek, a luxury interior design and home staging franchise built around elevated living and meaningful design. She also leads the Linden Creek Shoppe, an online destination for curated décor and furnishings, along with Archd, an inventory management and CRM platform created to support the home staging and interior design community. With a background shaped by entrepreneurship, family life, and a love of travel and thoughtful interiors, Alisa brings a warm, creative perspective to both her work and the communities she serves.

This episode features a conversation with Rebecca Matchett, co-founder and COO of Synchrony, about the grit, courage, and resilience required to build a business—even in the face of deep personal and professional reinvention.

Rebecca shares her entrepreneurial journey, starting with a volume-focused lemonade stand and later co-founding the iconic fashion brand Alice + Olivia, where she learned the importance of differentiation by using unique materials for pants.

The discussion covers Rebecca's powerful story as a lawyer, mom, and cancer survivor, including her decision to have a prophylactic mastectomy after learning she was BRCA positive, her cancer recurrence, and going through a full hysterectomy (flash menopause). She explains that her resilience stems from her ability to compartmentalize and focus only on actionable challenges.

She explains the user journey, where members are matched based on shared interests and communication preferences. A key feature is Jesse, an AI assistant who acts as a "wingman slash Mom Dad" to help users decode messages, start conversations, and foster social independence.

Finally, Rebecca provides a raw look at the realities of building deep technology, discussing the high costs of development, the variability of AI tokenization, and the challenges of App Store and Google Play fees and approval processes. She reveals that Synchrony is looking toward building a Progressive Web App (PWA) to mitigate these platform risks.

Rebecca Matchett is a seasoned entrepreneur with over two decades of experience building and scaling businesses across fashion and technology. She is the co-founder of Alice + Olivia and has launched multiple brands, including Rebecca & Drew and TrioFit, where she developed a patented approach to women’s sizing. In this episode, we uncover how Dr. Amy Beckley's personal pain evolved into the groundbreaking diagnostic tool, Proov, which addresses one of the most common and preventable causes of infertility and miscarriage. As a scientist, she was relentless in her pursuit to create a solution and empower women and couples to take control of their fertility journey.

Listen in as Dr. Beckley candidly shares her experiences navigating the male-dominated startup world, overcoming challenges, and finding her voice. She offers valuable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, especially female founders, on being their own advocates and breaking through the barriers imposed by the industry.

If you're a business entrepreneur or startup founder seeking inspiration and a powerful lesson in resilience, this episode is a must-listen. Dr. Beckley's story will touch your heart and remind you that with passion, determination, and the will to help others, you can turn your pain into purpose and find your path to startup success.

About Dr. Amy Beckley:

Amy Beckley, PhD, is the founder of Proov and the inventor of the first and only FDA-cleared test to confirm ovulation at home.

When Amy and her husband tried to get pregnant, they suffered through several years of infertility, including seven miscarriages and two rounds of IVF – the second of which resulted in her son.

When Amy decided she wanted another child (without another round of IVF), she used her background in hormone signaling to uncover a problem with ovulation which caused a progesterone deficiency (also called a luteal phase defect).

With the help of an inexpensive progesterone supplement, Amy and her husband were blessed with their daughter. Amy invented the original PdG test in her basement to help women identify problems with ovulation at home, and started selling them in plastic bags on Amazon with a $50 logo off Upwork.

Join Susan as she interviews Paul McCarthy, the founder and CEO of Snapfix.‍

Paul has always been involved in managing commercial and residential buildings as part of a family business. Five years ago, Paul got really frustrated with all the inefficient communication in relation to managing buildings, projects and teams. There were post-it notes, phone calls, voicemails, text messages, WhatsApps, emails etc. flying all over the place, and it was impossible to manage and keep track of everything. He wanted a simple photo-based solution, as simple as WhatsApp, that had the flexibility to manage everything.

Paul looked to the market for that simple solution, but everything he found was either too complex, too forms based, too inflexible, too time consuming, or too expensive. Since Paul had a background in software development, he set out to build a prototype phone application. From that,Snapfix was born and is now ”the simplest” facilities and maintenance solution on the planet.

Paul was scaling his business during COVID and learned to pivot his focus and was able to find a new opportunity providing a systemized cleaning schedule for hotels.

Paul credits his success from leveraging his 25 years of experience to create a solution to a problem he saw in the marketplace. He has a relentless focus on simplicity and is committed to providing a very specific solution to a niche market.

Join Susan as she interviews Craig Weiss - a Venture-Capitalist, serial entrepreneur, and published author. In this interview, Craig shares some of his predictions on emerging technologies that will revolutionize the world in the coming decades.

Craig says that there are complicated problems that need solutions that have yet to be developed. But the good news is that these solutions ARE complicated - complexity prevents your competition from solving the problem that could make you successful. If it were easy, everyone else would be doing it.

Craig’s company, Flagstaff Ventures, invests in early-stage consumer products and services. He meets a lot of entrepreneurs and says that qualifying the entrepreneur is even more important than qualifying the product or service they are offering. Craig feels a successful founder is someone who has passion and a “never quit” attitude.

However, a good founder must also be able to identify when it is OK to pivot when things are not working. Pivoting is not quitting, it is keeping your eyes on the big picture, and being willing to try something else to achieve your goals.

About Craig: Craig has founded or co-founded half a dozen companies. During his three and half years as President & CEO of NJOY, Inc. he led the company to a $1B valuation. An inventor, Craig Weiss has 14 patents to his own name, including five for medical devices.

Craig is the Managing Member of Flagstaff Ventures, a Venture Capital firm focused on early-stage consumer products and services. He is also the Co-Founder & CEO of venture-backed Retainer Club & Mouthguard Club.

Before becoming an entrepreneur, Craig Weiss was a patent attorney, where he focused on the drafting and prosecution of patent applications for medical device, e-commerce and business method inventions.

A published author, Craig co-authored I Am My Brother's Keeper, which features a foreword from Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu. The book is also the subject of the Nancy Spielberg produced documentary, "Above & Beyond,” in which Craig appears as one of the historians. Craig's newest book, "Fighting Back" was published on May 17, 2022.

It was while navigating her own pregnancy that she experienced frustrating gaps in her prenatal care as she was treated by different physicians.

She co-founded Trellis Health, an all-in-one platform that leverages technology while restoring the sacred relationship between the physician and patient. Even though he started his business in 2020 during the pandemic, he has doubled this revenue this year over last year. Blake shares that historically companies can experience massive growth during difficult times by keeping their heads down and staying focused on their goals. He credits his success by not paying attention to unnecessary distractions and keeping his mindset positive. Where your focus goes, your energy flows.

Blake’s success is rooted in truly seeing a piece of himself in each and every patient and having a deep connection to the outcome they desire to achieve. He treats every patient like they are his only patient, which has helped his business grow by word of mouth.

Blake is a licensed Board-Certified Health Practitioner in the field of anti-aging, functional, and regenerative medicine. You can learn more about his company at equilystmed.com.

BIO:

With a Master's Degree in Nursing and a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington’s Family Nurse Practitioner Program, our Founder, Blake York, has been a leader in the innovation and transformation of modern health in America.

Although Blake grew up in a health and wellness-centered home, with parents who owned several fitness centers and a physical therapy practice, it was only after 11 years of his own progressive nursing career that Blake found his true passion and purpose in this industry when he began coaching and mentoring others in weight loss and fitness in 2011.

“I realized the joy and gratification I gained from helping others succeed in their own health journey and making changes in life before they had to.” – Blake York

Blake’s desire to help others become empowered in controlling their own health and wellness through diet, exercise, and supplementation is what ultimately led to his discovery of Functional and Integrative Medicine. Thus, Blake followed his passion and became a licensed Board Certified Health Practitioner in the field of anti-aging, functional, and regenerative medicine–and that’s when Equilyst was born.

Blake’s success is rooted in truly seeing a piece of himself in each and every patient and having a deep connection to each and every outcome they desire to achieve.

Join Susan as she interviews Inez Ribustello, the former Assistant Cellar Master at the World Trade Center restaurant “Windows on the World” during the time of the 9-11 terror attacks.

Fortunately for Inez, she happened to be on vacation in North Carolina when the towers came down. Her soon-to-be husband also worked in the World Trade Center, but happened to be off that day as well. While her life and her future husband’s life was spared, she lost friends, colleagues and her job that day. She also lost her innocence and rose-colored glass view of the world.

The tragedy was a catalyst that moved her into a new direction. She ultimately moved back to North Carolina where she and her fiancé opened “On the Square”, a restaurant, wine bar and retail store. The wine list at On the Square holds the prestigious Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator.

Her next big venture was Tarboro Brewing Company, a microbrewery that started brewing in February of 2016. Almost a year later, she and her husband opened a satellite taproom serving tacos in the Rocky Mount Mills.

In September of 2021, Inez self-published her memoir Life After Windows. In 2009, Inez placed 2nd runner-up in the Best Sommelier in America competition held in New York City. She is a member of the Alumni Hall of Fame for the Institute of Culinary Education and a graduate of the Court of Master Sommelier’s Advanced Exam.

In this episode, Susan interviews David Perry, a 30-year veteran of the gaming industry. He started by making games just for fun – he had no idea there was any money to be made. His first game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, went on to be number one in the charts.

He continued his path doing things “just for fun” and was also the creator of the popular games like the Matrix, Terminator and cult classic, Earthworm Jim.

He started asking himself, if movies and music could be streamed, why not video games? From that idea, he created Gaikai. David went on to sell Gaikai to Sony PlayStation for $380 million and that company has been instrumental in creating the livestream foundation for video gaming in the cloud.

David is now the CEO of Carro, a new e-commerce partnership network used by over 30K Shopify brands with over 320M visitors a month. Carro (GetCarro.com) helps brands with their e-commerce and sales by partnering with other brands in the network.

David credits his success to having fun doing what he loves. You will ultimately find opportunity where you least expect it, and innovation through trying to build on that opportunity until you cannot beat it.

In this episode, Susan Sly interviews Edgar Blazona, a serial entrepreneur and 8-figure furniture business success story. Edgar identified his passion for building furniture when he couldn’t afford furniture for his first apartment, so he built his own.

Edgar knew he was born to be an entrepreneur, but he embraced his time in entry-level retail jobs to learn everything he could about business while making amazing connections. During his time in retail, he identified some opportunities that were not being met with customers looking for custom furniture.

Doors continued to open for him because he constantly looked for opportunities to gain proximity to the people who could help him with his business. He learned the art of “give to get” where he focused on how he could offer value before asking for favours.

With time, Edgar was able to get investors to provide him with the capital he needed to build his dream business, BenchMade Modern. In this interview, Edgar shares his advice for pitching a business to investors by using a phased roll-out to sharpen your skills and tighten your offer.

Edgar believes in having a backup plan to help provide you with stability when building a business. It will allow you to mentally “bet the farm” in building the business of your dreams. There are highs and lows in being an entrepreneur and it takes a lot of focus to keep yourself balanced while riding the waves. He recommends you find a community of like-minded people to connect with to help you during your entrepreneurial journey!

Bio
Edgar Blazona is a modernist American furniture designer and founder of wildly popular DTC sofa brand BenchMade Modern. A high school dropout, turned graffiti artist, turned serial entrepreneur, Edgar got his start in the furniture industry because of need: he was young and broke, and his first apartment didn’t have any furniture. Thus, he taught himself how to build some.

Along with starting several (!) of his own companies, including Modular Dwellings – a prefab backyard shelter company, Edgar also sharpened his skills in the corporate world at Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware. As he saw customers accustomed to waiting three months (and more!) for sofas and sectionals that realistically take only a few weeks to make, he realized there must be a better way and founded BenchMade Modern in 2015 to disrupt this norm.

Through her Business Strategy and Life Coaching Practice, Chana Mason works with clients and students around the world, guiding them to clarify a vision for their lives, unravel the thought patterns that hold them back, and giving them the tools and support to actualize their dreams.
