Dan Leonard has had an interesting and circuitous path during his career, starting as a television news reporter covering politics, then moving to Washington DC to work in government on Capitol Hill and on political campaigns. Lee Garrity is the current City Manager for Winston-Salem NC. He is retiring in June 2023.
Lee became the city manager for Winston-Salem in July 2006. In this position, he reports to and is accountable to the mayor and the city council for the operation of Winston-Salem city government, which operates a full range of municipal services. He holds graduate and undergraduate degrees in public administration from George Mason University in Virginia.
Summer Johnson McGee, Ph.D., CPH, is the 22nd president of Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Since July 2021, she has served as the chief executive officer of the oldest educational institution for women and girls in the nation. A prominent advocate for the education and advancement of women in health professions, for the advancement of diversity, and for the power of educational innovation, Dr. McGee has been widely recognized for her work in higher education. She received the American College of Healthcare Executives Distinguished Faculty Regents Award in 2014. Dr. McGee holds a Ph.D. in Bioethics & Health Policy from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. In June 2020, Tricia McManus began serving as Deputy Superintendent in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. As Deputy, she oversaw school leadership, equity and accountability, and safety and emergency preparedness. In November of 2020, McManus was named Interim Superintendent for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools after the resignation of Dr. Angela Hairston. On February 23, 2021, WS/FCS Board of Education officially named her the 8th Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent.
Phyllis joined Financial Pathways of the Piedmont in 1998 as a financial counselor and the following year became the housing director. Now we have over a dozen organizations collaborating and contributing in various ways, along with the Chamber of Commerce.
The quantitative and qualitative company outputs and job creation from these efforts are the future of the community. Everyone can get involved. I would add how the pandemic disruption is changing workplace dynamics in favor of coworking and flexible space concepts as a supplement to work-from-home.
On the entrepreneurship side, the pandemic has caused a surge in founder activity and new company creation. Winston-Salem is well-positioned to benefit.

A native of Winston-Salem, Katherine Perry has dedicated most of her professional career to the non-profit sector across the state of North Carolina, including roles in public relations, development, volunteer management, event planning, and community engagement. Before assuming the role of Executive Director, Katherine served Leadership Winston-Salem as the Program Director from 2017 to 2021 and recently led the organization in its pivot to a virtual environment in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the continued education and growth of community leaders. 1. Community engagement is the best way to expand your network and create meaningful relationships that will help you improve your community and provide opportunities for advancement. "I don't care what you know until I know that you care" *-LWS provides networking opportunities for alumni to connect on a personal level, make new friends, find support groups, as well as learn of other career paths (to name a few examples). 2. Community engagement goes a long way towards providing an example of your ability to work with diverse populations. Leaders that embrace these opportunities on boards and committees are likely to work with a diverse spectrum of people from different professional sectors and personal backgrounds. Working with people who have different perspectives than you is the best way to learn and grow and companies recognize this as a strength. 3. Both For and Non-Profits want employees that are committed to and immersed in their community to ensure longevity. Their investment in a new employee is for naught if they leave for greener pastures less than a year after being hired because they aren't connected to their community. 4. From a corporate perspective - community engagement is critical to being respected and trusted by your constituents/ members of the community. 5. Increasing your network by engaging in your community allows you to be a connector. This can catapult your worth in your community as well as within your network. The ability to make connections between people with resources and community opportunities is an invaluable skill/ resource. 6. Community engagement is a great way to facilitate positive change. If you love your job but loathe your community, you will likely leave. Changing jobs means having to start over again building equity with your employer and your community.
