Mindy was born and raised in metro Detroit, and holds a deep love for the great state of Michigan. She got her degree in film from Western Michigan University and enjoyed a genuine taste of the entertainment industry when the state incentives for the film industry were put into place. Mindy was one of the only locals working in the production office for the Clint Eastwood film “Gran Torino" which was filmed in Detroit. Anne Carlini has been rocking the airwaves at 101.1 WRIF in Detroit for over 20 years! She is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable voices on the radio, and she is a favorite among her station's listeners. I am very blessed to know her. Anne is an inspiration to both men and women who are pursuing a career in broadcasting, and she has first hand knowledge of how the industry has changed for women.
Most people have heard the saying "everything happens for a reason", but that something that happened to a family from Ithaca, Michigan has created something amazing for children with disabilities. Meet Jennifer Harrison, she is the creator of X-Ability a stylish wheelchair bodycoat that was inspired by her daughter Zoey who uses a wheelchair.
Zoey, who is one of nine children John and Jennifer Harrison have adopted. Zoey was born with cerebral palsy, but she may not have been born at all. Jennifer's story is compelling and when you listen to the podcast you will hear why she is a WCSX "Woman Who Rocks".
Did you know nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults occur to children ages 17 and under? I didn't until I spoke with Blythe Spitsbergen from "Carehouse" of Oakland County. Blythe is this week's "Woman Who Rocks" on WCSX and is trying to break the cycle of silence and help children become survivors of sexual abuse and not just statistics.

Meet Alicia Sweeney, she is the President of the "Detroit Dark Angels" semi-professional women's football team. The temperatures have dropped across the state which means the needs of the homeless are on the rise. Meet April Fidler from MCREST. She is the Executive Director of the non-profit which provides meals, lodging, life-skills training, housing assistance, job readiness training, and emergency shelter 365 days each year to Macomb County’s homeless population. The 41-B Drug/Sobriety Court strives to be a leader in community corrections, combining efforts of the judiciary, the community and treatment providers to create a safe and addiction free society. The mission of this program is to help those suffering from drug and/or alcohol addiction restore hope, gain courage and achieve recovery by providing services to foster healthy, long-term lifestyle changes. Amy Wilson has dedicated her time to helping those on the road to recovery. Amy was once and addict and understands the struggles and provides the support needed to assist in lifestyle changes. Khalilah Smith is a sophomore at Michigan State and recently received the distinction as the school's first black rodeo queen at the 49th annual Spartan Stampede Rodeo. Now, she is heading out west to represent the "Motor City" on a national level in the Miss Rodeo USA competition. There are 13,000 children in the Michigan Foster System and Elizabeth Brazilian is making sure that no child is forgotten. Her organization Child Safe Michigan, is a nonprofit which aids in foster care, adoption and mentoring.

Leslie is heavily involved in her community through various organizations, but spends a lot of her time helping survivors of sexual assault. Joyce was trafficked, abused and served seventeen years in prison for killing her abuser. Even though her life was hard and almost impossible at times, her faith never faltered. Special Spaces evolved on the belief that children battling a life threatening illness need a special space to heal, recover and find peace. Since 2007 the Downtown Boxing Gym has been teaching kids growing up in Detroit’s toughest neighborhoods valuable life lessons - inside and outside the classroom, and inside and outside the boxing ring. By providing mentorship, tutoring, and basic needs support (transportation and food) for our students, we are able to create a lasting impact that ripples out across the community. The Detroit Public Safety Foundation is celebrating "Women In Blue" for the month of May. The Women in Blue program is a celebration of the women within the Detroit Police Department, Detroit Fire Department and EMS. This week I went to the breakfast where all of these amazing women were honored. I had a chance to speak with so many incredible people, including Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aqualina who resided over the Larry Nassar sexual assault trial. She is an inspiration and after hearing her message about women power, I truly believe there is nothing that women cannot accomplish if they truly decide to.

Kate is a student, a role model and a weight lifter who recently put herself on the road to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. She wants to spread the message that it's okay to be comfortable in your own skin, no matter how you look. Her positive message is definitely one you want to hear and spread to those around you.

My guest this week has described herself as Fed-Ex for the needy. Her name is Erica Guido and her mission is to send love to Detroit. This Mom of two has created a grass roots project that connects people in need, with the things that they need. She hand delivers supplies to Detroit's Inner City, six days a week. Erica is a "WCSX" woman who rocks.

It seems an epidemic is sweeping not just our communities, but our country. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brings more bad news for the nation's continued fight against the opioid epidemic. Data from hospital emergency departments show a big increase in drug overdoses across the country.
According to the study, which examined data from 16 states, emergency department visits for suspected opioid overdoses jumped 30 percent from July 2016 through September 2017. This is where my guest this week comes in. Katie Donovan is a mother who was searching for answers when her own daughter became addicted to drugs.

While researching fun new places to eat in Detroit, I came across an incredibly talented young woman named Lena Sareini. Lena is the pastry chef at Selden Standard. Recently, she was nominated for a "James Beard" award, which is like the Oscars of cooking. Lena caught my attention because she is brilliant, extremely charming, and a devout Muslim. We discussed her faith, her inspiration, and why it is important for her to empower more women to do extraordinary things.

Winter Vinecki was born on December 18, 1998 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but grew up in Gaylord, Michigan. When she was 9 years old her Dad passed away from an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Winter formed http://TeamWinter.org a 501 (c) (3) non-profit to raise money for prostate cancer research & awareness. She has raised close to $500,000 toward that effort and counting.
