The Freelance Teabreak is a weekly bitesize podcast for you to listen to while you're waiting for the kettle to boil! Full of tips, news and discussion for freelancers, The Freelance Teabreak is bought to you by Emma Cossey from www.FreelanceLifestyle.co.uk
It's the last episode before a well-earned summer break! I'm swapping the mic for some quality time with my son before he starts secondary school, because some moments matter more than deadlines. There'll be no new episodes in August, but I'll be back in September, refreshed and ready to go.
Before I go, I want to hear from you: video episodes or audio only? Weekly, fortnightly, or monthly? Any guests or topics you're dying to hear covered? Drop me a message on Instagram (@emmacossey), pop into the Facebook group or Discord, or email hello@emmacossey.com . I'm genuinely listening and can't wait to shape the next chapter with your ideas.
Enjoy the summer, and see you in September!

Fancy starting a podcast but the thought of buying a mic, learning fancy software, and building a whole "studio" fills you with dread? Good news, you might already have everything you need in your pocket. This episode is a quick, happy little discovery about a hidden feature on the iPhone that could save you time, money, and a fair few headaches if you're thinking about recording audio.
We're talking about the humble Voice Memos app and its secret weapon: Studio Voice, which cleans up your audio and strips out background noise like magic, plus a built-in transcript feature. Whether you're recording on the go, don't have space for a full tech setup, or just need a low-effort way to get your voice out into the world, this one's proof that great content doesn't need to be perfect, just real. A lovely little tip for anyone dipping their toes into podcasting.

Quick one this week, but it might just be the best piece of freelance advice you'll ever get. Ever said "I'll have it to you by Friday" when nobody even asked for Friday, then spent the next few days low-key panicking? Yeah, us too. In this episode, we're talking about why that little habit of overpromising (and the scramble that follows) is quietly sabotaging your chances to actually impress your clients.
The fix is refreshingly simple: underpromise, overdeliver. Give yourself a bit more wiggle room than you think you need, and suddenly you've got the breathing space to do brilliant work, hit deadlines early, and leave clients genuinely wowed instead of just... satisfied. It's a small mindset shift with a big knock-on effect, and one you can start using today. Short, sweet, and worth writing on a Post-it.

How much should you actually be charging as a freelancer? Spoiler: there's no magic number, but there are some brilliant guides out there to help you stop plucking figures out of thin air. This episode is your cheat sheet to finding out what other freelancers are really charging, so you can stop guessing and start pricing with confidence.
We're rounding up the best places to snoop on industry rates, from YunoJuno's annual guides to LondonFreelance.org's brilliantly nosy "what I was actually paid" submissions, plus IPSE, Reddit's Freelance UK threads, and a handy calculator to get you started. There's also a timely nudge about the gender pay gap in freelancing (yes, it's a thing here too) and why doing a bit of local research matters just as much as national averages. Come for the numbers, stay for the confidence boost, and if you've still got questions, the community's waiting for you on Discord (link below to join).

Ever feel like everyone else got the "how to freelance successfully" manual and you're just winging it? This week's episode is here to tell you: you're not alone, and that glossy six-figure freelance life you see on social media is mostly smoke and mirrors. In this episode, I get honest about what freelancing actually looks like right now: quiet quarters, wobbly income, and all.
Inside, you'll get practical, no-fluff tips for riding the ups and downs: how to spot your own seasonal patterns, simple automations to make saving painless, and gentle reminders to keep marketing yourself even when business is booming. Whether you're just starting out or you've been freelancing for years, this one's a warm, reassuring pep talk with your feet firmly on the ground, plus a peek inside the Freelance Business Lounge if you fancy some proper community and support along the way. It includes twice-weekly calls, Tuesday accountability, Voxer support, and bundled courses/trainings all for £30/month.

In this quick episode, I'm sharing a warning about scammy discovery call bookings that freelancers are increasingly running into now that we rely on booking links. I've heard of calls being booked where the other person turns up just to hard sell to the freelancer, and a recent example from my team involved repeated bookings, a document that wouldn't open, and a prompt asking for an email address, lots of red flags!
If something feels off, I recommend Googling the person's email address or name, checking LinkedIn, and looking for reports on places like Reddit or spam-flagging sites (especially for phone numbers). These situations are rare, but it's worth being cautious, asking extra questions before the call, and sharing any scam trends you've noticed.

In this episode of The Freelancer's Tea Break, I'm reflecting on my son nearing the end of primary school and sharing practical ways I've managed childcare while freelancing, especially over the long summer holidays.
I explain how UK tax-free childcare works (pay £8 in, get £2 topped up) and remind you it can help beyond nursery, including some after-school and summer clubs (depending on who accepts it).
I also talk about how things get easier as kids get older, and share other support options that have helped me, including help from family (while acknowledging it's a privilege), swapping childcare with friends, using outdoors clubs, and looking into workspaces that offer childcare or gyms with crèches.
I also stress the importance of balancing childcare with your partner and invite tips for the secondary school transition, especially for neurodivergent children.

In this episode, I'm talking through what to do when someone asks you to work for free, whether it's an unpaid "test project", spec work, or a talk with no budget. I share why you can (and should) feel confident declining, plus a few polite scripts you can use.
If you do want to offer something, I cover alternatives like directing people to your portfolio/testimonials, creating a short free resource that builds your mailing list, offering a paid taster or paid spec work, or agreeing a clear skill swap. I also explain when free appearances can be more like PR/marketing (such as podcasts or local networking talks), and why "exposure" rarely pays, especially without anything agreed in writing, even for unpaid work.

If the idea of outsourcing in your business feels scary, you're not alone. For a lot of freelancers and small business owners, "outsourcing" can sound like handing over everything (your inbox, your accounts, your social media, your systems) and trusting someone else with the things you've been doing solo for years. Grips laptop nervously to chest
The good news is, you don't have to start big. In fact, you're much more likely to succeed (and actually enjoy the process) if you start with one small, contained task that removes stress and creates consistency. (And for me, consistency was always the challenge, so having someone to do the last bit really helped)
This post will walk you through tiny, practical ways to outsource, especially if you're nervous about it, plus how to do it in a way that still feels safe and in control.

In this episode of the Freelancer's Teabreak, Emma Cossey chats with Katherine Pearse (nee Hall), fractional CFO, systemic coach, and movement facilitator, about what it actually means to go fractional. Katherine breaks down how a fractional CFO differs from a consultant, interim, or part-time hire, and why that distinction matters. She shares the journey that led her from full-time finance leadership through a major merger to building a multi-dimensional business that blends numbers, intuition, and embodied practice. They also explore the growing trend of fractional working, the rise of the "multipotentialite" professional, and why showing up as your full self is not just good for your wellbeing, it's good for business.
Whether you're thinking about going fractional, already working that way, or just trying to understand what the term actually means, this episode is packed with insight, warmth, and a few Cinderella references.

Is it just a fancy rebrand for part-time work, or does it represent a distinct role, especially in the B2B space? I explore the nuances and implications of these terms, their impact on positioning and pricing, and whether this trend is reshaping how we view flexible work roles.

Welcome back to The Freelancer's Tea Break! This week, I'm joined by my friend, coach, and book genie, Gail Doggett, founder of Book Doubling, a book coaching business tailored for neurodivergent writers, especially those with ADHD. In this episode, we delve into how Gail aids writers in completing their dream books by using techniques like body doubling and screen sharing. We also discuss Gail's own journey with writing, the importance of developing a writing practice, and the unique challenges and strengths of neurodivergent individuals in the writing process.
What You'll Learn in This Episode
Gail Doggett is a neurodivergent writing coach, editor, and former acquisitions editor at a Big Five publishing house. Gail has spent over 20 years supporting writers from messy first drafts to finished books, with a special focus on late-diagnosed neurodivergent women who are juggling creativity, life, and everything in between. As an ADHDer herself, Gail brings compassion, strategy, and a deep understanding of how neurodivergent brains actually work, plus her own signature approach called Book Doubling, which is like body doubling but with editorial wisdom and accountability. She loves stories, knows exactly what it feels like to be stuck, and is here to help writers finally get their work over the finish line. In this episode of The Freelancers Tea Break, I share my haphazard journey of writing and publishing my first book, 'The Freelance Lifestyle'. I've delved into the 15-year (!) process, detailing the struggles faced due to undiagnosed ADHD, the importance of a support system with a focus on their collaboration with an ADHD-specific book coach, and the practical steps taken to make freelancing accessible.
The aim was to create a resource tailored for new and aspiring freelancers, with a strong emphasis on flexibility and practicality. This episode also covers the technical aspects of self-publishing, such as the costs involved, tools used, and the importance of a good book cover.

In this episode of The Freelancers Teabreak, I discuss the three tiers of services freelancers can offer: DIY (Do It Yourself), DWY (Done With You), and DFY (Done For You). DIY services include low-cost offerings like guides, training, or templates that clients use independently. DWY involves more interactive options such as memberships or coaching, where freelancers provide support and accountability. DFY is the premium service where freelancers handle tasks entirely, like creating website content, requiring fewer clients at a higher cost. This tiered approach helps cater to varying client needs and budgets without discounting services.

Meet Jamie Pei: With over two decades of experience in the media, fashion, religion and academia, Jamie knows a thing or two about living under the shadow and control of a big, influential institution. She finally made the firm decision to leave all of that behind to start her own coaching business and step into her main-character-energy era! Jamie is now a work/play coach, supporting self-employed folk, freelancers and solo business owners to curate a worklife that’s full of ease and play, and aligns with WHAT THEY WANT for their lives. A big part of this work includes helping you find your best way to break free from the ‘shoulds’ - the obligations, expectations and ideals that are holding you back so you can start living exactly how YOU want.

My ChatGPT Prompt:
"Hello! I have a list of housework and tasks to fix but I need to do them one by one because I’m overwhelmed. If I give you a list of tasks, can you put them in priority order and then drip feed them to me one by one. For the drip feeding, I’ll say if I’ve done the previous task and you could issue the next one. Celebrations for task completions and motivation tips would be welcome"

I'll let Sarah, the copywriter, introduce herself : 'Who knew the girl who used a whole roll of film taking pictures of headstones (age 7) and wrote a terrible poem about memories (age 9) would become a photographer and copywriter? Let that be your inspiration. If Sarah could do it, then really, ANYONE CAN. Sarah has always been creative, but it took a 20-year paramedic career to work out what she really hated doing and a move halfway across the world to finally do the thing she really wanted to do. She’s nothing if a little slow to figure things out ;-) She previously ran a successful wedding and portrait photography business for almost 8 years alongside her ambulance service life. And Sarah Wayte Creative has been her full-time obsession since 2019. English-born with proudly Maltese heritage, she’s an introvert with a fiery, passionate heart (and a tendency to wave her arms around while speaking). Yes, she says ‘arse’ and yes, she’ll pronounce words in ways that’ll make you giggle. She’s a cat-Mum to two, childfree by choice, and wife to a fella who goes with all her madcap ideas. And she’s all about helping you to express your real, honest self through your words and photos.'

Hello, imagine you're a coach and, as your client, I am struggling with procrastination. I need to get motivated, but as someone with ADHD, I need dopamine to get started and momentum is key. I need things to be fun, interesting, competitive or deadline-based. An encouraging tone works better than shaming me. Please keep things short and sweet. Jo Hooper is a coach who takes business owners on the brink of burnout to a bloody great life through challenging, intuitive and rebellious coaching. I live a pretty unconventional life - child free by choice, unmarried by choice, long term house sitting; and am very much unafraid of sticking my head above the parapet and saying the thing. I believe that capitalism, patriarchy and ableism are the trifecta keeping us small, pliant, kind, quiet and poor and am on a mission to help people recognise and change that.

Welcome to the Freelancer’s Teabreak, and this ADHD freelance coach is about to share with you a big mistake I’ve made with neurodiversity. This week is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. The thing is...I talk about having ADHD a LOT. Too much probably. So I thought instead I’d share the biggest lesson I’ve learnt about neurodiversity, and what what it actually covers - and why I won’t be calling myself a neurodiversity coach.

The very best advice I've ever had as a freelancer is a very simple one:Underpromise, and overdeliver.
An editor of mine gave me this advice a few years into freelancing, and it really stuck with me. Not least because I see a lot of freelancers get into pickles because they've done the opposite - overpromise and underdeliver.
The trouble is that if you overpromise, you're on a road to burnout, and you've left yourself with no wiggle room to wow your client.
But if you under promise and over deliver (especially with deadlines!) you're giving yourself room to go above and beyond their expectations.
In this week's podcast, I dive into this topic a little more!

Looking for new freelance clients? I’ve got three methods you might not have tried!
1) LinkedIn. Sure, you can post on there. But did you know you can search the jobs section for freelance gigs? And if you see a job that’s otherwise perfect, why not pitch them your freelance skills while they’re recruiting, to bridge the gap?
2) Creativepool. Creativepool often lists jobs for the biggest creative businesses in the uk, and sometimes they have freelance ones too!
3) Your own Facebook profile. So often, freelancers feel weird about posting about their work on their own Facebook profile. But you’ve got a whole network there of people who love you and want to support you, so share what you do so they can! If you’re looking for more ways to find clients, I’ve got just the thing. Check out my freebie, ‘30+ Ways to Find Your Next Client.’ It’s packed with tips and tricks for finding new clients as a freelancer. And for those who want to dive deeper, my course, ‘Finding Clients Quickly and Easily,’ is waiting for you.

Do you have reoccurring habits or tasks in your calendar? This is one of the most important things I do to structure my day. In fact, for my ADHD brain, having things automatically in my calendar means less micro decisions. Which really helps my executive function. What reoccurring tasks do you have in your calendar? Cost of living is really tightening its grip at the moment, and that's reflected in a lot of the price rises of the subscriptions and tools that we pay for. Finally, if you have a newsletter you may want to look at decluttering your follower lists. Many of the big newsletter platforms have cut offs for how many subscribers you can have before you get charged a higher level. Liz Wilcox has a great training called Open Sesame on this in her $9 a month membership (affiliate), as well as weekly email templates you can use that get amazing results.

This week, I have a guest on the podcast - Berenice Smith. Berenice has been a member of the Freelance Lifestylers FB group for a while, and she's been a support to so many in the group - but especially those who are childless not through choice.
In this episode, we talk about Berenice's freelance journey, the language and actions we can take to be more inclusive of those who are childless, and the support out there for those who are childless, whether that's by choice or not. The tweaks she's suggesting are small but powerful, and I'd really recommend taking the time to listen to this episode (plus Berenice is an absolute delight!)

This episode's topic isn't the cheeriest, but it is important - wills and back up plans as a freelancer.
Looking to sort your will? I really liked using Farewill, and this link will get it for £35 https://farewill.com/r/emmacossey-78380.
If your situation is more complicated, a lawyer is probably a better option - but make sure you get it done!
