We’ve helped over 20,000 borrowers manage more than $2.7 billion in student loans and assets—and we’re not politicians or lobbyists. We’re real experts who’ve seen the good, the bad, and the absurd.
In this episode, two of our FitBUX experts break down what we believe is the real solution to the student loan crisis. We talk through the root of the problem, the blind spots most people (and policymakers) overlook, and the practical fixes that would actually help borrowers—not confuse them more.
Whether you're a student, a recent grad, or already in repayment, this discussion will open your eyes to the truth behind the chaos—and what can be done about it.
🎧 Watch now to hear:
🚨 This isn’t final yet—but it could change everything. Congress is proposing a brand-new student loan repayment plan called IBR RAP—and it’s not just a tweak.
We're talking about interest forgiveness, a $50 cap on principal reduction, and a repayment structure that flips everything we’ve known about IDR plans.
In this LIVE from YouTube, we’ll walk through:
✅ What the proposal actually says (not the headlines)
✅ Real payment examples: $10, $50, $400, and what gets forgiven
✅ Whether this is better or worse than SAVE, PAYE, or IBR
✅ What this means for your loan balance, forgiveness timeline, and financial plan
✅ Why some borrowers are already saying this violates their Master Promissory Note—and could lead to lawsuits
⚠️ If you’ve ever been told you’re locked into PAYE or New IBR, this plan could force you off those repayment options—no grandfathering. That’s where the legal firestorm begins.
🎯 Whether you’re paying off loans or hoping for forgiveness, this could impact your entire financial strategy.
💬 Drop your questions in the chat—this is your chance to get clarity before anything becomes law.
📌 FitBUX has helped 20,000+ borrowers manage over $2.9 billion in student loans and assets. We’re here to simplify the chaos and help you make confident decisions.
What happens when a burnt-out nurse decides to rewrite the rules? In this powerful episode, we sit down with Ebony Tillery, a Brooklyn native turned 7-figure nursepreneur, to unpack the raw, real story behind her transformation—from working grueling bedside shifts to building a thriving virtual weight loss clinic and teaching other NPs to do the same.
We dive into:
✅ The breaking point that sparked her leap from burnout to business ✅ Growing up in Brooklyn and breaking free from the expectations that hold so many back ✅ How trauma, divorce, and solo homebuying built unshakable resilience ✅ The biggest fears she faced going virtual—and how she pushed through ✅ What freedom really looks like as a mom and entrepreneur ✅ Why so many nurses stay stuck (and how to break the cycle) ✅ Her journey investing in real estate and crypto—without a financial background ✅ What she tells NPs sitting in their car before a shift, feeling hopeless
Whether you’re just starting out, stuck in burnout, or dreaming of something more—Ebony’s story proves you don’t need permission to build a life on your terms. You just need a plan, belief, and one small step.
🎓 Why does it cost so much to become a DPT—and what can we do about it?
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Richard Severin, DPT, to explore the growing cost of physical therapy education. We take a deep dive into:
Whether you're a current PT student, a new grad, or just considering the profession—this is a must-watch.
The house education and workforce committee rolled out its plan for higher education and student loans today.
It has a LONG way to become law but I've seen people freaking out all over social media about it... which is ironic because there is a lot of good stuff in it that in my opinion is way better than the current plans.
I usually don't do any content on this type of stuff until it becomes law.
However, because of the mass hysteria I've seen today, I'm going to jump on a live in about 5 minutes. I'll be discussing what is in it, what is good, what is bad, and WHO IT WILL APPLY TO...

In this episode, we're discussing how a tax refund works and what you should do with it. "I'm so happy my tax refund is a lot this year." Does that sound familiar? While initially pleasing, a large tax refund might not be as beneficial as it seems.
We'll explore why receiving a hefty tax refund indicates you've provided the government with a zero-interest loan and how you can adjust your withholdings for a better financial balance. We'll also guide you through the smartest ways to utilize your tax refund, aligning with both short-term satisfactions and long-term financial goals.
Here's what you'll learn: The Real Cost of Your Tax Refund: Understand why a large refund isn't as advantageous as it appears and how it reflects on your financial planning.
Adjusting Your Withholdings: Steps to correct your tax withholding to ensure more of your money works for you throughout the year, rather than waiting for a refund.
Smart Uses for Your Tax Refund: Whether you're eyeing long-term financial prosperity or aiming for short-term goals, we'll provide strategies to make the most out of your refund.
Remember, the goal is not to judge your financial health by the size of your refund but to understand your effective tax rate and optimize your withholdings accordingly.

Whether you're buying, selling, or just interested in the future of real estate, you'll find valuable insights here. We break down the implications of the settlement, including the end of standard 6% commissions and the move towards competitive and negotiable agent fees. This change is expected to lower the overall cost of buying a home by thousands of dollars, fundamentally altering the dynamics of the housing market. Additionally, we provide our analysis on the future of real estate costs. With agent commissions expected to drop significantly, we discuss how this could make home buying more accessible for many Americans and what it means for the market's overall health. But that's not all – we also delve into the upcoming changes to PAYE (Pay As You Earn) and explore who will be most affected by its phase-out. This is crucial information for anyone dealing with student loans or contemplating higher education financing. Don't miss our comprehensive overview of these pivotal developments. Join us as we explore the future landscape of real estate and what it means for buyers, sellers, and the industry as a whole. --- USEFUL LINKS --- * https://www.fitbux.com * https://www.fitbux.com/money-school/ * https://www.fitbux.com/podcast/ * https://www.fitbux.com/student-loan-refinance/ * https://www.fitbux.com/student-loan-planner/

The FitBUX podcast hosted by Joseph Reinke is all about helping listeners understand their financial situation and how to make the best decisions for their future.
In this episode, Joseph talks to a couple in their mid-twenties who have recently graduated from college and are trying to navigate the financial landscape. Both of them are working in health care as physical therapists, making an annual salary of 76k a year.
The woman owes 208k in student loans and is eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF), while the man owes 198k in student loans. They also have 37k in auto debt with payments of $780 per month.
Joseph helps them create a plan for their future by focusing on building an emergency fund, maximizing retirement savings, paying off debt strategically, and looking into home buying opportunities.
He suggests they look into filing jointly or separately--filing separately will save them $4,800 per year on student loans and they can reclassify their tax return in two years and get back another $200 per year. When they have kids this number will increase even more.
Joseph encourages the couple to consider investing conservatively then increase risk so in five years and they would have up to 75% of their investments in the stock market.
With his advice and guidance, Joseph predicts that when it comes time for retirement this couple could be sitting on $8 million! However, if they pay off their student loans rather than going through income-driven repayment (IDR) plan then that number decreases by about $660K worth of assets (roughly $7M)--which is still an impressive amount!
Financial planning can be intimidating but this episode shows how empowering it can be when you take the right steps towards creating a secure financial future for yourself and your family. Tune into this episode of FitBUX podcast for helpful tips from Joseph Reinke!

Today's show will focus on the FIRE movement and the recent event that has brought it into the spotlight. We'll be discussing why financial freedom doesn't have to come with a dollar amount, why you need to simulate your plan and keep tracking it, and how a financial professional shed new light to this idea.
We'll start by exploring what the FIRE movement is all about. This acronym stands for Financial Independence/Retire Early, and it's a popular approach used by people looking to achieve financial freedom. It involves cutting back on expenses and investing wisely in order to build wealth over time in order to reach the goal of becoming financially independent and retiring early.
Then, we'll dive into the story of Financial Samurai, a well-known website among those in the FIRE community. He is a finance professional with experience in this area and has his own blog where he shares advice related to achieving financial freedom.
Next up, we will discuss why this particular example serves as an important lesson for anyone interested in achieving financial freedom. We'll explore how having $1 million does not necessarily equate to being financially free, how budgeting down every nickel isn't necessarily freedom either, and why having a bad attitude towards money isn't ideal either. We'll also talk about how most people wouldn't do something like go after full FIRE due to its high level of commitment-- but still use it as an example of what can be achieved if you are willing to put in the work.
We'll then get into more details about Financial Samurai's actual situation at hand-- he was in his 30s when he retired from his 9-5 job, had real estate generating income for him, had a blog generating income, was living in an expensive area with two kids going off to college-- only to realize that three million dollars worth of assets weren't enough for him! That leads us into our next point as we discuss why simulations are important when trying to figure out where you're at financially and why you can't just "set it and forget it" when it comes managing your finances.
Finally, we will conclude by highlighting how financial freedom is really about how you think about money instead of any arbitrary dollar amount-- something that Financial Samurai realized himself after coming back from retirement-- as well as discussing FitBUX as an easy way for anyone else interested in simulating their own plans and monitoring them closely over time so they don't end up in the same situation!
Today we are discussing how to manage your money wisely, and the risks associated with investing. We are focused on a specific case study of a recent graduate who has some cash in their 401k, Roth IRA and taxable investment account.
The first thing that stands out is that this individual does not have an emergency fund yet. This is quite concerning as an emergency fund is vitally important for any financial plan, especially when starting out in life. Without an emergency fund, our new graduate is left vulnerable to unexpected costs that could potentially derail their entire financial plan.
Another issue here is the risk taking behavior of our graduate. He invested in Tesla stock, which is much riskier than typical investments such as bonds and mutual funds. While it's possible that investing in Tesla can be very lucrative, the probability of attaining these large returns within one to three years is quite low. It would be much wiser to use this money towards building up an emergency fund or expanding their retirement savings instead.
Finally, once their emergency fund and retirement has some more funding, he can look at investing in Tesla again or other stocks they find interesting. It's important to make sure you understand the risks associated with individual stocks before you invest in them - no matter how exciting they may seem!
At FitBUX we want our listeners to make smart decisions about managing their money and taking appropriate risks so they can reach their financial goals. We invite you to join us for more great content on investing and personal finance!
This podcast episode is all about developing a financial plan based on the specific circumstances of a couple.
To illustrate this, we use a real life example of a physical therapist and his fiancé, who are both recent graduates and will be getting married this year. They have saved over 100k between their cash accounts, taxable investments and retirement. They have also paid down their student loans and auto loans to a nominal amount.
This couple plans to move to another stated to work for a few years, before moving back home to buy a duplex. Six months after moving home, they hope to have saved enough to buy a second duplex. The goal is that by 2025 they will have their first child.
Their current combined salary is 137K and will increase to 220K when they move to the other state. Once returning to their home state, she plans on reducing her hours, and reduce them again once they have a child.
We helped them run some scenarios using our financial planning tool to help assess the couple's situation further and to help them plan further. Idealistically, they should reach their goals in under 10 years and predicted that by 2046 - 23 years from now - they would be completely debt free!
Finally we ran another "what if" scenario for them. Listen in to see how our technology can plan for those unplanned scenarios.

Welcome to the weekly financial update podcast! This week we discuss student loans, mortgages, and stocks.
This podcast episode covers the latest news on student loans and how to get them forgiven. We discuss the new digital signature feature for PSLF recertification, as well as a recent Supreme Court ruling that could allow borrowers to have their loans forgiven if they can prove fraud by their school. Additionally, we explore the fact that while less than one in 10 undergraduates default on their loan payments, only six in 10 actually complete their degree within six years of starting school.
In addition, this week's financial update podcast covers mortgages, with a focus on the new 40-year mortgage approved by FHA. We discuss how 71% of people wouldn't accept a mortgage below 5.5%, and how Fannie Mae now allows real estate agents to use part of their commission for down payments on houses for clients. We've been asked by many young professionals if they should be buying a house right now or waiting. Everybody should buy when they feel ready.
However, home affordability is at a 40 year low! Therefore, I decided to dig into my old valuation bag to predict how much I think housing prices are going to drop.
In September, I did a valuation and today I'm updating it based on current market conditions.
As a forshadowing, things are starting to look more affordable out there.
This was a back of the napkin type of valuation but will give us a good feel of what we can expect.

Here is the latest about student loans and what to expect in 2023.
What will happen with student loan forgiveness?
When will repayment start?
Should I switch plans?
In this quick podcast episode, we explain the benefits of a pre-tax investment and the post-tax investment. Which type of investment to choose will (as with anything in healthcare, and as you're starting to realize in finance) DEPEND on your goals and situation.
Many people make the mistake of recommending one extreme or the other. They either recommend focusing on pre-tax retirement accounts or focusing on Roth IRAs.
Its amazing how many "financial professionals" get this wrong. The correct answer is "it depends" on your situation as well as a focus on retirement income diversification.
This podcast goes deeper into how you should be making this decision.
Michelle, like many of us, was a victim of high priced college education relative to income post-graduation and zero financial education growing up.
She loved helping people so she became an OT.
She was burnt out because of her money situation.

Home affordability is at an all-time low.
Home supply is still low.

This is a story about how Amy learned to FOCUS on what mattered to her financially.
Amy was always a good student, with a 4.0 GPA and an AP scholar. She did great in undergrad and pursued a doctorate in the medical field.
Besides her career, she really loved DIY home projects, and was super excited to finally graduate and start working so she could buy a house. However, she was terrified because she had absolutely no clue what to do with money. She had over $250K in student loan debt, a car loan of $500/month, and only making a $78K salary. She was advised by well meaning people to do XYZ and ABC. But she couldn't qualify for a mortgage.
Finally a colleague told her about FitBUX. Amy built a profile and developed her plan. But the plan wasn't want she wanted. She was conflicted, and finally decided to schedule a call with her FitBUX Coach. She finally learned... FOCUS is the key.
Listen in to see what it means to FOCUS.
Home prices are at all time highs. Mortgage rates are climbing. To make things even more challenging, many young professionals are trying to buy a house with student loan debt.
Buying mortgage points may be your secret weapon to reducing the cost of your mortgage and saving a ton of money.
We all wish we could snap our fingers and be out of debt. Unfortunately, that can’t happen for most of us.
Therefore, we search on Google ways to pay off student loans fast. Instead of getting good recommendations we instead get results like ‘become a dog walker.’
These articles aren’t bad but center more on ways to increase income. They should really be titled how to creatively pay off student loans.
This podcast is different than the others. I detail nine real ways to pay off your student loans fast.
I will also debunk two myths that many websites tell you to do which are garbage recommendations and cost you a lot of money!

When you start understanding finance and getting creative with it, you can generate wealth. Here is a story about someone who started out as a PTA, and became a real estate investor.
Nic King, graduated from college, and was accepted into PTA school 3 days before classes start. He started out in outpatient orthopedics. When he received his first paycheck, he was shocked in how little ended up in his bank account. It was a huge learning experience about taxes. Then in 2021, he's transferred into a director of clinical education.
Prior to academics, he was able to purchase multiple properties in a short amount of time, and now has passive income.
In this podcast, Joe will go over the key items you need to know about robo advisors and which ones to use and which ones to avoid.

You're going to see a lot of different things on the internet. And it's sometimes very challenging to distinguish what's real and what's been glorified.

Our education system teaches us to memorize and regurgitate what you learn. This harms up financially because who we go to for financial help are doing the same thing - memorize and regurgitate. And that is the status quo. Unfortunately the status quo in this country is to be behind financially.
In this podcast, Joe gives a number of financial examples of how this happens and how to avoid being behind.
“Well, I know that people are taught to diversify. But diversification is just something that brokers came up with, so they don’t get sued. If you want to get rich… you have to concentrate and focus.” – Jim Rogers
I agree 100% with Jim, but when it comes to money management, most consumers don’t understand what Jim is referring to so I want to take a minute in this article to clarify a few things:
Retirement and Social Security is going to affect all of us. We'll review how Social Security works and how it was intended to be a complement to your retirement. We'll also review how and why we feel it's flawed.
The inefficiencies of financial services will cost you in the long run.
The "old" way is to go to a bunch of different financial people because they only have knowledge about their specific areas. Nobody puts it all together for you into the bigger pictures. Plus they will push products that you may or may not need because they get paid on those products.
In short, traditional financial services create more chaos than good. In this podcast, Joe provides you with a number of examples on how the wrong student loan choice, investment choice, mortgages, etc... can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars.
In addition, he discusses how to avoid these inefficiences and if you do, you can be like the example Joe gives whereby the FitBUX member now has the opportunity to have 4x the amount of money by the time they hit retirement!
In this podcast, we discuss how the Federal Reserve's policies in the past hurt young professionals today. Specifically, how their actions have caused inflation and why you should care what they are doing. In addition, we discuss what the Federal Reservce was set up to do vs what it does today.

Here are the 5 steps to follow.
In this new one, Joe is going to review why he feels most younger invididuals are too aggressively invested in their investments. He’s going to review the general advice based on academia on which investment advisors base their advice and why that is flawed. You end up taking more risk than you probably should, or too little risk.
He uses an example of your 401K to illustrate this.
For a real-life example of how this affects someone check out our “Conor” example.
This is a follow-up to another one of our podcasts in the past, “Most People Are Too Aggressively Investing”.

Many are curious whether renting or buying is a better. It is a complex question with a lot of moving parts. There's a behavioral component as well the mathematical/financial side. Joseph will provide you a few points to consider if owning or renting is better for you. Some of the points he brings up may surprise you.
In the workshops Joseph does at universities, he gets 3 common questions that are similar and they are related to money anxiety:
In this episode, Joseph discusses the reason why we have anxiety when it comes to thinking about money, managing our money, making decisions about money, etc…
The reason why we have financial anxiety is important to understand so that you can reduce it. Joseph is hoping this podcast helps a lot of people with money anxiety disorder (or some call it financial anxiety disorder).
To make it easy to understand, he compares money anxiety and financial anxiety to anxiety we used to get when driving prior to the invention of GPS.
If you're attending undergrad or grad school, you may need to take out student loans to pay for your schooling. In this episode, Joe discusses four recommendations that will make student loans more affordable and manageable. Some you can do yourself; others require policy changes.
Setting a max.
Having a private lender.
0% interest rates
One income driven repayment plan

What is the difference between consolidation and refinance?
Student loan consolidation: Merging of loans into one big loan. Doesn’t save! Doesn’t drop your payment!
Consolidation can cost you for 3 reasons:
Student loan refinance: Replacing an old loan with a new loan at a lower interest rate. Goal is to save money.
Confusing because sometimes when you refinance you also consolidate multiple loans into one loan.
For those of you who are still in school, or just graduated in the last year, this episode will dispel some of those myths that you've heard about investing.
There a difference between institutional investing vs those who are just starting out to invest. There's a difference between those who have assets vs those who are starting out. There's a difference between academic theoretical vs real-world investing.

Fixing The Student Loan Problem
Student loans now sit over $1.6 trillion. There are many ideas to fix the issue. In this podcast I discuss one way to do so while working within the current system. I.e. If we aren't going to blow the system up completely, how can we work within it....
In this podcast, Alexis discusses how she followed her heart and became a PT instead of going to Med school.
She discusses what it felt like being a student and new grad with no plan and feeling overwhelmed. She also gives good advice on how students and new grads can start tackling their loans and setting themselves up for a good financial future.
"CEO's read on average 55 books per year!"
That, or a number close to it, is often sited as too how many books CEO's read. But why? Why do they read that much?
I heard this when I was younger and began reading anything I could. However, recently, I figured out what skill I was building.
I.e. yes, you read to learn but there is something more powerful about it.... Learning the skill of context!
In this podcast I discuss what this skill is and how it can help you in a large number of ways.
Conor graduated in 2017 with approximately 140k in student loan debt. Much of the debt was in private loans that had 10% plus rates.
He decided to get help from FitBUX in 2018.
He tried to initially refinance. However, he was denied. The reason was false reporting about a student loan from Undergrad that was damaging his credit score.
We worked with him to reestablish his credit so he could refinance as well as designed a financial plan to help him get on stable financial footing.
He was also able to get his Perkins Student Loans forgiven.

“Invest early and often because of the power of compound interest!” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard financial “experts”, financial advisors, and popular blogs say this.
However, when it comes to your money, there are two really important myths about compound interest that you need to know. In this podcast I discuss 2 myths about compound interest.
Most Importantly, I detail why your focus should be on compound growth not compound interest.

When I speak to recent graduates about their student loan grace period, I often hear two very different comments. The first, "I want to start paying my student loans immediately so I can save money." The second, "I do not need to worry about my student loans because I'm in my grace period." Who's right?
The first is somewhat correct because it depends on your goals. The second is always incorrect because you need to understand and plan a student loan repayment strategy as early as possible...and no, ignoring your student loans is not a strategy. It is a costly mistake. This podcast discusses strategies for you to implement during your student loan grace period.

One of the most common questions we get at FitBUX is “Should I pay off student loans or invest?” This is a complex question because each person’s goals are different and both options have advantages as well as disadvantages.
This Episode discusses 7 steps you need to take in regards to making this critical decision. The first steps 5 steps are for those looking to keep it simple. The last two are for those want to take their plan to a more "advanced" level.
I want to emphasize one point. This video is from a “money efficiency” standpoint. Therefore, I am referring to the approach that is beneficial in the long run purely from a math standpoint. At the end of the day, the best choice is the one you understand, are comfortable with, and will implement.

One of the most popular videos in our financial course, Money School, is title “Manage Your Risk & Your Return Will Be There.”
We posted this quote in our FitBUX Finance Group on Facebook a few days ago. We did so to point out to all the people in that group that have gone through the course to use the current pandemic as an opportunity to learn.
However, there are many individuals in that group that haven’t watched our financial course and wanted more information about managing your risk. Therefore, we did a special podcast highlighting how risk hits all four financial inputs: income, expenses, assets, and debt.
In the podcast, we define what this quote means, how to reduce risk over time, and how to have peace of mind.
