We got the climax and falling action in this last section—it was cool to see Padme really shine as a relief coordinator and Senator. A true cast of villains is coming together, no doubt to setup the next two books in the trilogy! This is our final installment of this book—and our final episode. And then it was cool to see her jump right into action as she got back to work. We’re already guessing how some of these different elements are going to come together.

We finished up part 2 and started part 3 of the book! We definitely hit a slower-paced section with this week—falling action and what we’re sure is a steady ramp up into the next part of the story. Despite it being slower, it was full of familiar faces, which was quite fun!

This week we get our first exposure to Padme in the Senate—and it doesn’t go at all how she anticipated. She’s overwhelmed and incredibly human. We also get to see Sabe take on slavery on Tatooine—and again, it doesn’t go as smoothly as our heroes hoped. But she’s putting in the work, and we love her.

In this final installment of this Read Along, we discuss the book's last few chapters and the conclusion of this part of Rin’s story. This was a heavy read, one that we certainly would recommend to other readers, but with some trigger warnings attached. While we applaud Kuang’s ability to pull on real history, it was a little too much reality in our escapism for our taste. (But we’ll probably finish the series at some point.) Now we know how the stone eaters and guardians were created. We know what happened when Hoa and the other tuners were told to turn the Plutonic Engine on. We know how Father Earth responded to the puny humans stealing some of his core.
And still, we saw how the more pacifist stone eaters are living at Core Point. There were some really sweet moments amidst all the revelations.

Today the SibNerds are talking about the Prologue – Chapter 3!
A rare instance of the second-person POV! And it’s done so well! It’s visceral and raw and it keeps the reader close. We’re intrigued and invested! The world building in this first section is impressive—and it didn’t leave Anna nearly as lost as she normally is, which could be because of the second-person POV.
In a lot of ways this appears to be a story about grief. Do you think Essun is right to belief her husband killed their son? Do you think Damaya is safe with Schaffa? How will Essun and Damaya’s paths cross?

The immediate reaction in finishing this book? Outrage. It was so incredibly good, but we are outraged for Ning, the Princess, and everyone.
This is the way a cliffhanger should be done—the original mission was completed, so the ending was satisfying in that way. However, we have so many questions about all the surrounding events! We’re excited to read the next book in the series!

According to a quick Google search, Snow White was born into a royal family and then her father remarries a mean (jealous) queen. Her father suspiciously dies and Snow White is left alone with the Evil Queen. You probably know the rest from here!

Today the SibNerds unpack The Last of Us season 1! While we approached the show from different starting points (Anna has little experience, and Josef has played several times), we both really enjoyed the concept and the storytelling. We get into the nitty gritty of some elements and probably gloss over things we could have talked about for hours! There’s just SO MUCH. The Sib Nerds agree that the dialogue is always strong, the setting becomes a bit tedious at times. Also, the greatest misfortune is that Anna’s copy of the books do not contain the maps.

This week the Sib Nerds discuss the Prologue and Chapter 1.
Our boys, Jean and Locke, spend some time in a casino environment, and it’s fun to see them up to their old antics. The Bondsmagi are going to haunt them—literally and figuratively? We also learn that Jean had to pull Locke out of a deep depression after they left Camorr.
Time will tell if the tension between Jean and Locke will cause problems as they deal with external enemies.
