When people think of the word transaction, they often think of a transaction as a simple tit for tat exchange. To be “transactional” can mean cold-hearted, calculated- and can be meant as an insult. However, a transaction is not merely a point of sale.
Whether you're negotiating a business deal, interacting with your loved ones around a holiday table, or just trying to survive the inter-office drama in your business, "You Are Always Transacting". This entails recognizing that there are always a constant stream of exchanges that are continuously shaping our day-to-day lives. Having an awareness of the existence of these constance exchanges and knowing how you can influence them can give you a leg up in the marketplace, and really everywhere in life.

This episode, we welcome Dr. Kyra Gaunt to the Influential U Podcast.
Dr. Gaunt has been an innovator in the field of ethnomusicology for over twenty years. Ethnomusicology is a discipline that examines how culture shapes musical people versus how musical people like celebrities shape culture. Dr. Gaunt specializes in black girlhood, musical blackness, and digital media studies. Her latest research examines how online music and tech platforms groom girls for patriarchal violence, particularly in girls’ intimate bedroom musical plays from YouTube to TikTok.
Her other accomplishments include being a member of the 2009 inaugural class of TED Fellows and her 2018 TED video “How The Jump Rope Got It’s Rhythm” has over 7 million views with translations in 29 languages and in 2022, she gave her first TED Talk as a Senior Ted Fellow. We are continuing our “Legends on Legends'' series. At Influential U, we have a group that is held in our highest regard and admiration- this group is our Esteemed Alumni. Esteemed Alumni are those who have completed our four-year curriculum in transactional competence. The most ambitious of our Esteemed Alumni, our green berrets, if you will… study in a program known as Legends. Our Legends are often top performers in their fields and have experienced a level of satisfaction that only comes from years of deliberate practice and study. This program is led in fellowship with co-founders Kirkland Tibbels and John Patterson and this initiative includes a wide range of strategies to advance and expand their own application of Transactional Competence and pave the path in the study of Transactional Leadership.
Over the course of the next few months, we’ll have special episodes of the Influential U Podcast. I’ll be introducing our two guests and then getting out of the way so that you may experience the expertise and communication between two of our participants. Helen Kearney is a sales recruiter for a global software company. Her life's journey and her career specialization allow us to examine the question that we all - at one time or another - find ourselves asking: what is my perfect job (or purpose or life's mission)?
As she explains, many people are exceptionally naive about their professional value. They may not understand their involvement in the larger transaction and the realities of their role in the marketplace. As such, she says, they often fail to consider or understand the needs of the employer and their concerns. Like any good marriage or satisfying position, a job is a reciprocal transaction.

Jennifer Caldwell is the Chief Development Officer with Food Share of Ventura County and works to feed and nourish the community she has called home for the past 30 years. Under Caldwell’s direction, fundraising events have grown to not only raise more revenue for the food bank but to provide the opportunity to spread the work and mission of Food Share within the community it serves. While nourishing the community, she took a turn to sustain herself, and during the Fundamentals of Transaction Program lost 41 pounds, expanded her value and influence, and doubled her income. At the University of Virginia, I interviewed a group of women about the impact of our programs. I spoke with Ellen Beverly, Dawn Spiller, Olga Kipnis, Carolyn Saint, and Jenn Oliver about how the framework of Transactional Competence has helped them in their roles within the university.
What might, you wonder, is the most surprising outcome? An environment of respect for different roles and personalities.
While they each experienced more effectiveness and influence, the ability to understand Personality and Transactional Behavior has produced a culture of respect both for the simple day-to-day transactions and for the larger transactions that support the aims of the enterprise.
You can hear how Transactional Competence provides a framework where each individual can understand their own and others’ roles in the transactions we all serve.
