Welcome to The Sisterhood Podcast, where we believe women rise when they lift each other. This podcast is an encouraging place for women who love the gospel but sometimes struggle with the church. We are here to help you feel less alone and provide helpful resources. Join us for courageous conversations about the intersection between faith, politics, and social issues, all with the underlying principle of loving and including those whom Jesus called “the least of these”.
Join Tiffany as she has a conversation with authors, McArthur Krishna & Anne Pimentel of the recent book, Changemakers: Women Who Boldly Built Zion.

Celebrating the Winter Solstice with kids
Why is Christmas celebrated on December 25th?
Christmas traditions that are rooted in paganism
Ideas for celebrating the Winter Solstice
Mood:
Lanterns, candles, bonfire. Google a Winter Solstice playlist. Let your home darken with the setting sun and eat/read/celebrate by the light of candles, a fire, Christmas lights.
Food and drink:
Wassail, yule log cakes, spiced cakes or cookies, and seasonal fruits are traditional, but you can use your imagination. Our family also made a simple charcuterie board for the main "meal" last year.
Crafts:
Research simple homemade Winter Solstice lanterns.
Slice and dry orange circles (symbolic of the sun) with cinnamon and use for ornaments.
Make edible ornaments for animals and decorate a tree or bush outside with them.
Activities:
Read winter solstice stories with young children, or share winter solstice poetry with an older crowd.
Write down the things you want to let go of on a small piece of paper and throw it in the fire.
Plant a bulb or seeds and think about what you’d like to nurture in the coming year/spring.
Eat by candlelight.
Bundle up and go for a nighttime stroll either with flashlights or candles.

I crafted this short letter for a friend who was looking for language to help her approach her local church youth leaders about the modesty dress code that she was not comfortable with for her daughter. Feel free to use and edit at will: “Thank you for all your hard work getting ready for camp. ( ) is really looking forward to it! Our modesty guidelines as a family are that our children dress appropriately for the activity, for the weather, and for safety - otherwise we simply want them to feel comfortable in whatever they are wearing. That guideline applies to both our sons and daughters. We do not want to give our young daughter the message that her thighs or shoulders are inherently shameful or sexual in nature and need to be covered. We are working hard in our home to combat the messages in our culture that both shame, objectify, and sexualize girls bodies, and also tells them they are responsible for the inappropriate thoughts and behaviors of boys and men. We have given considerable thought to the implications these messages can have down the road, and are deeply concerned about upholding these messages. ( ) has always worn regular length shorts in the summers and tank tops on extra hot days, so unless there are activities or safety concerns that require different clothing, that’s what she will be bringing to wear when the weather is hot. Sadly, we know of far too many experiences where girls in particular have been shamed and embarrassed at youth activities for their clothing choices - and some have left the church as a result - so we want to avoid this type of experience altogether, and hope you will not shame or embarrass her for following our family guidelines. I hope you don’t read this as an accusation or a challenge, but as a sincere desire from concerned and loving parents to support healthy behavior and thoughts about all girls' bodies.” Favorite Things:

Shredded Beef (or pork) Tacos
3 lb roast
1 lg jar green salsa
Tortillas and taco toppings such as cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and avocado
Cook the roast in your slow cooker on high at least 5 hours or on low at least 8 hours with 1 cup water.
Turn the slow cooker to off or warm, drain the water, shred the meat with forks, add the green salsa and eat immediately, or turn the slow cooker back to warm to keep it warm for later returning kids.
Cream Cheese Pasta
1 brick cream cheese (softened)
1 package shredded parmesan cheese
1 cube chicken bouillon
1 package fresh basil
1 t. salt
1 box rotini pasta
1 small red onion
2 roma tomatoes
Cook the pasta according to directions, drain and set aside (add a little oil so the pasta noodles don't stick together)
In a blender blend the cream cheese, parmesan cheese, basil, and chicken cube dissolved in 1/2 cup water, and salt.
Pour mixture over pasta. The mixture will be thick, so don't be worried and don't add more liquid.
Chop the red onion and roma tomatoes and mix together in a small bowl with about a half cup olive oil and 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar. This can be used as a topping if desired. My kids don't love the topping, but my husband and I do.
Trader Joes Orange Chicken and Rice (easiest one)
Package of frozen orange chicken from TJ's (cheaper and more flavorful than most). Cook according to directions.
Rice (brown, white, or whatever you have on hand. You can even buy frozen rice from TJ's while you're there if you want to make things even easier.
