In Episode 123 of Tendy Talk, I had the pleasure of hosting Eric Spencley, the creative force behind Spencley Design Co. Eric's unique journey from guarding the net as a goalie to crafting bespoke woodworking pieces offers a compelling narrative of passion and adaptability.

From the Crease to the Workshop

Eric's hockey career began in his youth, when he developed a love for the game, particularly goaltending, thanks to an unconventional game he played in gym class. His dedication between the pipes taught him discipline, focus, and resilience—qualities that seamlessly transitioned into his woodworking endeavors. Eric later discovered woodworking and what started as a hobby quickly evolved into Spencley Design Co., where he now crafts custom furniture and unique wood pieces.

Embracing the DIY Spirit

Beyond his craftsmanship, Eric is passionate about empowering others to embark on their own DIY journeys. Through his engaging content on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, he demystifies complex projects, making woodworking accessible to enthusiasts of all skill levels. His tutorials and project showcases inspire a growing community to pick up tools and start creating.

For episode 96 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Australian semi-pro goalie Tom Munro of The Coast Ice Hockey Club. Episode 87 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network I chat with Mike and Josh of the Pillow Talk by CWGA podcast. The two are brothers who host a podcast talking about goaltending. Mike took up the position as an adult and relies on his brother Josh who is a goalie from his youth and now coaches. With the two always talking about the position they thought maybe others would like to listen in - and they're right. Be sure to follow Pillow Talk by CWGA on social media, and enjoy this episode.

Episode 80 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network is a little different than other episodes. After taking a few weeks off from the podcast after my Mom's unexpected passing I was joined by Justin Goldman of The Goalie Guild and Lift the Mask project. I wanted Justin to be a part of this episode because he too unexpectedly lost his mom a little over a year ago, but also his work advocating for mental health and his efforts to normalize talking about trauma. We both approached the discussion not being afraid to be vulnerable, and because of that at times the talk gets raw. It was also therapeutic, and if us sharing our experience can help just one other person dealing with loss it was worth it. Selfishly though, this was an episode I needed to do for myself. It was therapeutic. Be sure to follow Justin on social media, and enjoy this special episode.

For Episode 73 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Andrew Wong, a fellow Twin Cities beer leaguer who I've been Instagram friends with for a while, but our paths somehow haven't crossed at the rinks. He also recently acted as the emergency backup to the Minnesota Wild's emergency backup goalie (and former Tendy Talk guest) Connor Beaupre.  Andrew also starred in his brother Cory Wong's music video for Cory and the Wongtones.  In this episode, we talk about perseverance, Jonas's iconic Koho pads and his unique cage, and returning to Switzerland to end his career. For Episode 71 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Cam Matwiv from The Hockey Shop Source for Sports and the voice of reason on the InGoal Magazine Podcast gear segments with former Tendy Talk Guest Kevin Woodley. I was surprised to learn that Cam hasn't been playing goal since he could walk like most Canadien goalies, but his knowledge of goalie equipment is top-notch. If you are a goalie gear nerd, this episode is for you. Cam has some great insights into things to consider when ordering custom goalie equipment, shares an amusing story from the time that Ryan Miller just casually stopped into The Hockey Shop as he was on his way out to lunch, and other great nuggets. Be sure to follow Cam on social media, and enjoy the episode.

For Episode 70 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Shawn Himmelberger, a goalie I have played plenty of Minnesota Wild Adult Hockey League games against at the Super Rink, not to mentions SotaStick.com sponsored tournament games. I had two other recordings set up this week, but both had to get pushed out last minute. I've been wanting to get Shawn on the show, and he was awesome to jump in and ensure we didn't miss a week of the podcast. Aside from talking hockey and playing against me, we talk about how and why Shawn and his family converted an old coach bus into an RV that they not only travel around in, but used as a mobile locker room during COVID so the kids didn't have to get ready in rink parking lots. Be sure to follow Shawn on social media, and enjoy the episode.

For Episode 69 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with friend, and fellow 4 The Love of Puck Playground Puck goalie Tara Treloar. I first met Tara three years ago when the two of us played in the inaugural Playground Puck outdoor tournament at the Groveland Ice Rinks. She is a goalie from the Pittsburgh area, so it was good to see her again a few weeks ago at this year's tournament. If you follow my Instagram account Tara is the other goalie who walked into a bar in full equipment with me to order a beer. We also sat on a bus bench along a busy street in full equipment waiting for out friends to arrive which lead to some amusing photos and encounters of people asking if we needed a ride to practice.  Be sure to follow Tara on social media, and enjoy the episode.

For Episode 68 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Steve McKichan of Future Pro Goalie School. Steve broke into the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks to play in one game before his playing career was cut short by a devastating injury in a game. Steve got into coaching, making his way back to the NHL and coaching past Tendy Talk guest Ed Belfour while he was in Toronto, and working with other guests Maria Mountain and Dustin "Bones" Smith as well. On the episode, we talk about Steve's journey to the NHL, his injury, coaching one of the greatest goalies to play the game, and why it's important to listen to several coaching voices not just one. Pete and I talked about his start in hockey, how he spent some time in my neck of the woods, and something Pete suggested I try in my next beer league game to help me keep my focus. In our conversation, Pete shared what he learned skating with the Canadian national team doing a drill with past Tendy Talk guest Ed Belfour. There are so many great nuggets of simple things we can all incorporate into our game from minutes to the beer leagues. This is an episode that is worth bookmarking and re-listening to every so often when your game begins to lag.  Be sure to follow Pete on social media, and enjoy the episode.

For Episode 66 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Eddie Lack a goalie whose name I had written on a list of goalies I wished to have on the podcast before I started. Eddies outgoing personality attracted me to him as a guest, but being a Sweedish player assimilating to North America, his affinity for Tacos, playing with the legendary Roberto Luongo, and now his ventures into real estate had me wanting to ask him so many questions.  The episode is shorter than most as we connected over the work lunch hour, but I still had a chance to ask some questions and get some great stories out of Eddie. Who knows, maybe I can have a part two if we get together when my family heads to Arizona for Spring Training.  Be sure to follow Eddie on social media, and enjoy the episode.

I first met Chip when skating at the 4 The Love of Puck Playground Puck outdoor hockey tournament two years ago. Chip is from California so she thought the 5-degree temperatures we were playing in were cold and dressed like an Inuit. Us Minnesotians thought the weather was balmy for that time of year. She was also amused when me and another goalie went to a bar in full equipment. For Episode 61 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with former Brother Rice High School of Chicago teammate and current candidate for Vista City Council in Vista, CA, Dan O'Donnell. I was a junior Dan's freshman year - his first year playing organized hockey. It was fun to watch him grow the two years we were teammates and to see the program climb the summit of the Chicago Catholic Hockey League by winning the Kennedy Cup Dan's senior year. You forget how much time you spent with teammates until you reminisce like Dan and I did in this episode. Seeing as though Nick is playing in my hometown Chicago, I had to ask about the food. When I moved away from Chicago the food was the thing I missed the most. Did I forget to mention she is an author too? Sami Jo released her book The Role I Played last year chronicling her journey in women's hockey. I was thrilled to talk to Sami Jo after listening to the audiobook. We talk about how those teams helped him adjust after two tours, one in Afghanistan, the other in Iraq. Find a warrior team near you. He became his own advocate, worked hard, and eventually earned a D1 college scholarship, then was invited to an NHL training camp and signed a pro contract.  Adam and I also talked about my idea for a beer league goalie camp. If you watched ESPN's coverage of the FDNY/NYPD hockey game prior to the 20th anniversary of 9/11 you saw Mike faceoff against last week's guest FDNY goalie Kurt Pflumm in an exciting game.  It was fun talking to Mike and learning about his journey in hockey, and learning about his background with the police department. Listening to Mike I think we forget just how much police departments do in larger cities to keep us safe. One thing I had to ask though was how he stays focused and ready for the game after warmups when the rivalry game has so much pomp and circumstance, especially this year with the game being played only days before the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the FDNY losing 343 of its own.  Be sure to follow Kurt and his FDNY teammates on social media, and enjoy the episode.  FDNY Hockey Website  Instagram  Facebook  Twitter And be sure to watch Rivalry City, the documentary about the FDNY/NYPD hockey game rivalry.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROvBC0xxOHM Music on this podcast is courtesy of The Zambonis. Mike and I tackled a number of topics from his recent bike trip across the state of Missouri, to his openness on social media and sharing a photo of him hugging his crying daughters, to the best food cities he has visited. We also touch upon why Syracuse is shit - but still awesome. We only scratched the surface of things to talk about with Mike, and we're bound to have a follow-up episode or two in the future.  Be sure to follow Mike on social media, and enjoy the episode. For Episode 48 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Dan Forrest of Forrest Goaltening Professional Training and Skills Development. Dan and I discussed how he approaches coaching younger goaltenders and shared what he feels is the best way for any goaltender to do in preparation for the upcoming tryout season. The biggest takeaway I had from our conversation was that as coaches we need to focus just as much, if not at times more, of our time and effort into developing a goalie's mental game and toughness as we do their technical development. Sure refining footwork and save selection is a good thing, but if a goaltender can't handle the stress of the position, what good are those technical skills? For Episode 47 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I reconnect with my very first guest, Dustin 'Bones' Smith, as I celebrate one year since my first episode. Dustin and I have become friends since that first episode, but a lot has happened over the year that we needed to catch up on. We talked about the amazing 70's era vintage set he has acquired, fiberglass mask and all, and what it is like skating in that set compared to modern-day equipment. We even talked about how my wife and I almost moved the family down to Nashville this year, and how such a movie is still in our five-year plan. We even hatch a plan to create some content together on my backyard ice rink this winter. Be sure to follow Dustin on social media, and enjoy the episode. For Episode 46 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I look back on some, but not all, of the highlights from the first full year of the podcast. I severely underestimated how much time this episode would take, not to mention how long it would get. Solely because of how long the episode was getting, I decided to make it the best of the first half of the year episode. I intend to drop the best of the second half of the first year around Christmas time when scheduling gets harder. When I dropped the first episode with Dustin "Bones" Smith I was worried I wouldn't make it past 10 episodes. Most podcasts don't even make it past the first 15 episodes. Flash forward to today and we're on episode 46, and several more are already planned with guests confirmed. It's exciting to see what this podcast has turned into and to have watched the listenership grow. Who knows how long it will last, but as long as I can schedule guests, I'll keep it going. For Episode 45 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Jeff Osborn from The-Rink.com. Jeff is also the lead voice on the Kraken Hostile Seattle Hockey Rinkcast, and can be heard on the Chicago Hockey Rinkcast.  Jeff and I grew up in the same general area of the Chicagoland southwest side, frequenting many of the same rinks and lockerroom. It's a surprise that our paths never crossed at rat hockey (that we know of). It was fun talking to Jeff to hear his non-traditional path into the beer leagues having played most of his tough on the pavement before transitioning to ice.   Be sure to follow Jeff and all the Rinkcast podcasts, and enjoy the episode. For Episode 44 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Nathan Hedrick, formerly of The Backups podcast, and current coach with Jeff Glass Goaltending. He also works at Pro Skate Goal in Calgary. Nathan and I were all over the place going off on different tangents, talking about podcasting and all that goes into it, talking hockey with goalies, equipment, and coaching. If you're watching the video of the conversation, it took Nathan about a third of the way into it to realize he didn't have his camera turned on. Oops! For Episode 42 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Matt Vicidomino, a Boston area goalie who shares an appreciation for all sorts of goaltender art. Matt's Instagram account was originally dedicated to sharing goalie hockey cards, but as time progressed he started sharing some of the great art focusing on goalies that is out there on the 'Gram. It was fun learning how Matt got into the game. The fact that he wasn't thrilled with skating after the first time he tried it, but a family trip to Long Island to visit relatives did the trick after a cousin put him on a pair of rollerblades that only had front and back wheels - not the four wheels we're used to. That same cousin sent him home with some makeshift street hockey legs pads, and the rest is history.  Be sure to follow Matt on Instagram, and enjoy the episode. For Episode 43 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with New Jersey goalie Frank Montuori. Frank and I connected at the recommendation of our mutual friend Charles of Bone Jack Designs. Episodes like this one where I know nothing about the goalie I am about to talk to are fun because the conversation can flow just about any way. I was trying to be respectful of Frank's time, but I think if we were to meet up at a local watering hole he and I could spend the night sharing stories and reminiscing about the goalies of the '90s era that we grew up watching. Even though he is a Devils fan I'm sure we could talk about Mike Richter of the Rangers for at least an hour, if not more. Follow Frank on Instagram Music on this podcast is courtesy of The Zambonis. For Episode 41 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with former St. Olaf College goaltender and current Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference single-season save percentage leader P.T. Haider. P.T led the league with a 95.7% save percentage in the 1999-2000 season, before graduating and becoming a teacher. A career change lead him to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a police officer. P.T. is now the Deputy Chief in Northfield, MN. P.T. and I crossed paths when working the summer hockey camps at my alma mater Saint Mary's University in Winona, MN. While it was only natural that we shared some of the stories from our days as camp counselors, we also talked about how P.T. got into the game, and how life as a police officer in Minnesota has been the past year and a half. With me living not too far from P.T.'s parents, I hope he takes me up on the offer to grab a drink or to share some of my Belfour Spirits whisky that Ed and Dayne sent after I recorded episode 24 with them. For Episode 40 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network and The Hockey Podcast Network, I chat with Team Great Britain goalie coach Euan King who also runs the King’s Elite Goaltending school in the UK. Having recently returned from the IIHF World Championships it was interesting to hear what the experience was like in the bubble, not to mention how Team Great Britain's operations differed from some of the other higher-profile national teams. It was interesting to learn that while growing up in England, hockey seemed like the natural sport for Euan to play rather than soccer or cricket like most youth since his dad played pro hockey there. In our discussion, he noted that while hockey has a sizable and growing fan base in the country, the coverage of the sport is still almost nonexistent.   Follow Euan on social media, and enjoy the episode. For Episode 39 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with a goalie who played hockey when he was younger, but as a defenseman. He stepped away from the game in middle school to play other sports but came back to hockey his senior year of high school. Knowing the varsity hockey team only had one returning goaltender he thought he'd try his hand at the position simply to be part of the team, and give guys a live body to shoot at never expecting to get into a game - until he learned early in tryouts that the returning goalie suffered a season-ending injury off the ice. You can imagine how the season went, but Jake shares how he was able to keep a positive attitude through it all, and talks of how his teammates responded to the predicament. For Episode 38 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with a goalie whose dad and grandpa combined for over 1,300 NHL goals, but he decided to stop shots instead of taking them. That's right, on this episode I talk to Jude Hull about the reason he started playing goaltender, how he went from working NHL special events to financial advising and playing hockey in the Minnesota Interscholastic Athletic Conference (MIAC) for the Saint Olaf Oles and the fact the Jude played almost exclusively away games earning him the nickname of the Road Warrior. We also talk about Jude's favorite movie genre - romantic comedies. After seeing Jude's response on Twitter to The Hockey News' tweet asking what's the main reason you never made it to the NHL I knew I had to get him on the podcast. For Episode 37 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with former Saint Mary's University of Minnesota Men's Hockey teammate and Hermantown Hawks Alum Allen Knowles. Al and I have had the chance to reconnect recently when we skated at a pretty good pick-up skate together. On this episode we talk about how a Korean-born kid starts playing hockey in Hermantown, MN, how New Jersey Devils goalie coach Dave Rogalski ended both his high school and college careers, and how our freshman year tryouts were unlike anything either of us had experienced as there were 26 goalies trying out for six spots (two if you account for the returning goaltenders who filled the first four spots). Being old teammates, Al and I could have talked for hours recounting stories from our playing days together and sharing stories of other adventures in this great game of hockey. For Episode 36 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with Andy Oman of The Hockey Arsenal. Andy and I first met each other when we played in the 2018 SotaStick Hockey Classic. Prior to the tournament starting, we engaged in a humorous Twitter battle going back and forth. Somehow our two teams kicked off the tournament with the opening game. I'm happy to say my team, Team Bill's Toggery came out the victors. Andy has a neat background in that he wasn't originally a goalie, but once he started playing the position he knew he belonged between the pipes. He then gave his body a rest by playing out and started a company making high-end composite player sticks at beer league prices. Maybe even one day a goalie stick.... For Episode 35 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with Tanner Houston of the Windy City Bender Podcast, a part of The Hockey Podcast Network. It is always fun to talk to other goaltenders who played their high school hockey in the Chicagoland area. Tanner and I chatted about how he got his start in the great game of hockey, how he ended up playing goaltender, and how he became a member of the Windy City Benders Podcast talking Chicago Blackhawks hockey every week. Tanner waited until after we had ended the podcast to mention that he worked at the legendary Chicagoland pro shop Gunzo's Hockey Headquarters. Luckily I was still recording so I added that short bit of conversation into the episode. For Episode 34 of Tendy Talk presented by the BLPA Podcast Network, I chat with Corey Brenner of The Goalie Guru. We learn on the podcast that it all started with taping a rock to the paddle. I first became aware of the Goalie Guru when Andy from The Hockey Arsenal gave me one of the first generation models at the inaugural SotaStick Hockey Classic. I tried the device and wrote a product review soon after. Find out how Corey came up with the idea for The Goalie Guru and some of the iterations on this week's podcast episode. Episode 26 of Tendy Talk I chat with Essan Galo of the Bay Area Hockey Repair Shop in San Jose, California. For episode 20 of Tendy Talk, I had the pleasure of talking to mask creator and mask painter Don Straus. Unlike previous guests, Don doesn't play hockey yet alone ever played goalie. His background is in motorsports, which freed him of any preconceived notions as to how a goalie mask should look when he came up with his now-iconic Armadilla goalie mask. Not only was the mask a work of art, but some of the masks he painted are icons of 90's NHL hockey from Brian Haywards San Jose Sharks mask where it looks like a shark with his mouth open around the cage, to previous Tendy Talk guest Kelly Hrudy's Hollywood mask, and most notably John Vanbiesbrouck's Florida Panthers panther mask. As we discuss on the episode, what we all remember as Vanbiesbrouck's panther mask wasn't the original design, the one to the right was. Have a listen to the episode to hear more great stories.

Lining up time to chat with Kane Van Gate for an episode of Tendy Talk wasn't easy. I had multiple layers of 'his people' to go through, but honestly, I think it was his niece and nephew we saw in his movie Kane Van Gate's Hockey Journey. Eventually, we got time on our calendars though, and KVG and I had a great conversation and agreed that we need to get together next time he is in Minnesota. When I lined up Kevin Woodley of InGoal Magazine, NHL.com, the AP, USA Today, The Hockey News and so many other publications, I knew we might go over the hour I scheduled us to talk. I had no idea we'd talk for almost two hours and probably could have talked longer. I asked him about starting to play hockey and goalie later in life, how he got into journalism, and other great topics. Set some time aside, pour a beverage of your choosing, settle in, and enjoy this one! This episode I talk to InGoal Magazine founder David Hutchison. Usually David is the one asking goalies the questions, so it was fun to turn the tables and learn about his goaltending history. We also discussed the origins of InGoal and what has made it the success that it is today. While this is the first time David and I have talked to each other, I get the feeling it won't be the last. This episode I talk to my old goalie coach from Saint Mary's Univerity of Minnesota Donny Nadeau. I get one burning question answered - why did they even pick me to be on the team, but more importantly I got to reconnect with an early mentor of mine who taught me a lot on and off the ice. We talked about Donny's journey in hockey, but also how he is able to recharge away from the game by taking annual road trips to visit America's National Parks.
