This week we talk about the book of Jonah. You won’t get moralism here. The point of the book is too important for that. Jesus’ words in the Gospels about Jonah are our major interpretive lens. Listen in as we find Christ in this book of the minor prophets.

This week Todd and Chris turn to the book of Esther. Todd really has some great insight into the book since he grew up Jewish. How do we understand this book that never mentions God? Is God still there? What about his promises? What does God’s apparent absence mean for the promised Messiah? Whose word is irrevocable: the decree of the Medes and the Persians, or God’s word? Listen in as we talk about finding Christ in this unique book of the Bible.

Job is definitely about suffering. But why does Job suffer? In this episode, we use Meredith Kline’s contribution about Job in the Wycliffe Bible Commentary to connect Job’s suffering to what has come before in redemptive history - and what will come after. Meredith Kline understood and taught that the Bible is where we should expect to hear God speak. But too often we hear others claim that they have heard God speak to them. What do we make of these claims? In this episode, Todd and Chris discuss the confidence that we can and should have in Scripture as the very word of God to us. Please listen, tell others, and let us know what you think!

First, we spend some time talking about a general approach to ministering to a local church on the part of pastors and elders. Next, we turn to the topic of pornography. As it turns out, what Kline taught us about the nature of the New Covenant has profound implications for helping those who struggle with pornography. We hope this is helpful to you, and we welcome your feedback.

Staying with our Meredith Kline Applied series, we start a new section on counseling. This week we critique nouthetic counseling. First, in Daniel 2, there are two mountains: Israel is the mountain that cuts into the world power, and another mountain that crushes all world powers. Next, Daniel 9 is about God’s promise that within 70 weeks of Israel’s captivity, God would send the Messiah and ultimately save his people. This week, we talk about republication from a few different angles. First, God gave Canaan to Israel because of his gracious promise to Abraham. Second, God is the divine warrior who defeats all of Israel’s enemies - both human and demonic. Third, God’s presence is located in different places before and after Sinai. In this section, Kline looks at how God reveals the consummation of all things in the types and shadows of Israel. Next, he describes the relationship between a covenant that God makes, and the canon (or authoritative body of literature) that governs the covenant. Finally, he ties together phenomena like the Holy Spirit hovering (over creation and over Israel), the tabernacle, and the movement of all of that into God’s Sabbath rest. God creates and he redeems - from beginning to end. Download, subscribe, and tell your friends!

We continue in chapter 10 this week. First, we talk about how worship during the time of Abraham was not theocratic. He built altars, but the culture all around him was very much like ours. Next, we talk about how - even at Abraham’s stage of history - there was an antichrist crisis. God’s people do suffer, but God has not lost in past antichrist crises - and he won’t lose in the final Antichrist crisis.

Can it ever hurt to talk about the gospel some more? No. We didn’t think so, either. This week we talk about the gospel promises that God gave Abraham. First we talk about the first-level fulfillments in Isaac, Israel, and Canaan. Next we talk about the second-level fulfillment in Jesus, believers in Jesus, and the new heavens and new earth. Finally, you get an extra bonus with Todd’s helpful understanding of Ephesians 6.

There is some review this week with the material about Noah. But we think you’ll find our conversation full of fresh insights. First, we talk about how Noah was a type of Christ in his obedience. Next, we talk about what this episode of covenant history teaches us about the antichrist crisis. Finally we talk about final judgment and how it is a great source of comfort and assurance to believers in Jesus.

We finish up chapter seven this week. First we revisit the question: Is Ezekiel 28 talking about Adam or Satan? Next, we talk about what it meant for Adam to guard the garden. Finally, we talk about how Jesus is like both Adam and Israel in wilderness temptation. And you know what that means: Republication!

Everyone (who reads Kline) knows that Har Magedon is a mountain. But did you know that Eden was a mountain, too? First we discuss how Eden was a replica of heaven. Next we talk about how Canaan was like Eden (and like heaven). We take a moment to camp out on the idea of the Sabbath. Finally, we talk about how the republication of the covenant of works at Sinai is related to Eden being a mountainous replica of heaven. You’re going to like this!

Chapter 4 is the last one that focuses on heaven the way this book has been so far. In this chapter, Kline suggests that the Spirit replicates the glory of God in every aspect of creation. For example, we see the theme of the Spirit of God overshadowing persons or groups of people throughout the Bible. In the same way, God designed certain things in creation to serve that same overshadowing function. But we also talk about patriarchy and Kline’s unique take on the image of God in man. There’s something for everyone!

What will it be like when God transforms this creation into the new heavens and new earth? That is the topic Kline is dealing with in this chapter. One possibility is that there will be a lot of continuity with this creation. Another possibility is that there will be such radical discontinuity that it is almost as though God must create everything all over again. Give the episode a listen and let us know what you think!

We’re treading in deep water this week. First, Kline talks about the physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit in the initial creation of the invisible heavens. Kline calls that physical manifestation of the Holy Spirit “endoxation.” Next, we talk about the Holy Spirit’s role in the incarnation, and the relationship between the persons of the Trinity. Finally, we distinguish what Kline is saying from what Scott Oliphint is saying.

Next, we talk about heaven is the temple. Finally, we talk about how we should not be focused on or satisfied with this world. We should be longing for the new heavens and the new earth.

We talk about God’s gracious and comforting words in Zechariah 1:13-17 in Glory in Our Midst. First, we discuss the typological nature of Israel’s covenant context. Next, we talk about how much of the content of the prophecy will be fulfilled when Christ returns. After that, we discuss how Zechariah’s message of perseverance is a rebuke to theonomic postmillennialism.

This week we discuss Kline’s article from the mid 1990s called Covenant Theology Under Attack. First, we talk about Kline’s critique of Daniel Fuller. Fuller rejected the idea that God ever related to people on the basis of a works principle. Fuller argued that human obedience could not add to God’s glory. Here, he appealed to Luke 17:10, like many Reformed theologians. Like the authors of Merit & Moses, Fuller also used a speculative, ontological analysis to argue that any reward God might have given Adam would have far exceeded the value of Adam’s obedience. Next, Kline focuses his critique on John Murray because Murray restricted the definition of covenant to involve only the principle of grace. Finally, Kline critiques Murray’s student and successor, Norman Shepherd because Shepherd followed Murray’s covenant theology to its logical conclusion, and Shepherd denied the imputation of the active obedience of Christ to believers.

This is the last episode about Kingdom Prologue. First, Jesus was incarnate as an ordinary man at his first coming, and he will be dazzlingly bright at his second coming. Next, in the same way, the second person of the Trinity made appearances in the Old Testament. At first, he would come as the angel of the Lord, but appear to people as an ordinary man. But after an episode of judgment, he would appear as the pillars of fire and smoke. Other times, he would appear as the bright glory-cloud after judgment. Finally, the good news is that we do not have to build a ladder to get up to God. God has come down to us in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son.

Meredith Kline was very critical of Dispensationalism. This week, Todd and Chris discuss Dispensationalism compared with covenant theology or biblical theology. First, we talk about how Dispensationalists interpret the Bible. Next, we talk about how Dispensationalists understand types and their fulfillment. Finally, we talk about how Dispensationalism is at odds with the gospel. We also talk about the millennium.

This is a long episode, but it is so worth it if you are married, thinking about getting married, or know someone who is married (that should cover just about everyone). Todd discusses four chapters from his doctoral dissertation on divorce. First, he discusses the context and the meaning of Matthew 5:31-32. Next, Todd discusses the way the Church has understood divorce during different ages. Then Todd surveys the different approaches to divorce today in believing churches. Finally, Todd describes his own pastoral approach to divorce. That really sets it apart from the other contemporary approaches. The subject matter is heavy, but we think you will appreciate it. Please let us know either way!

What was the worshiping community like before Israel - before Abraham? It looked like families gathered around altars. This week, Todd and Chris discuss the spirituality of the Church in Genesis 5. First we look at the end of chapter 4. Then we look at chapter 5. Finally, we consider some misunderstandings and abuses of “patriarchy.”

This week, we discuss the worshiping community, and the common grace city-state. First we talk about how important it was that God swore an oath to Cain. Next, we talk about how God uses the State to keep things from being as bad as they could possibly be. Yet we also talk about how the State is like a wild animal that can harm us. Finally, we talk about how we should care for people made in God’s image, no matter our politics.

There is an important announcement at the end of this episode! Lee and Chris cover two glorious verses this week: Genesis 3:20-21. First, we talk about Adam’s confession of faith. Adam says, “Amen” to God’s promise in Genesis 3:15. Next, we talk about the remarriage of Adam and Eve. Finally, we talk about the way the animal skins God uses to cover Adam and Eve, point forward to Christ’s sacrifice and his righteousness which covers us.

This week, Lee and Chris cover familiar territory in Kingdom Prologue. First, we discuss Genesis 3:15. Kline connects that verse to passages in Revelation 12, Psalm 2, and Daniel 7. Next, we talk about the atonement. God’s love and his justice are not in competition. God demonstrates his love toward us in that he satisfies his own justice by sending his Son to bear the punishment we deserve. Finally, we talk about election. Genesis 3:15 is the first glimpse we get of that doctrine in the Bible.

We continue our journey through Kingdom Prologue this week. First, we discuss the common curse. Life is hard, and then we die. Next, we talk about the covenant between the Father and the Son. It is different than the covenant between the Father and Adam. It is also different than the covenant of grace found in Genesis 3:15. Finally we focus on how Christ accomplished our redemption.

In this episode, Lee and Chris discuss the temptation and fall of Adam and Eve. First, we begin by looking at the serpent and the devil’s use of that other creature. Next, we look at the sins of omission of both Adam and Eve. Finally, we appreciate Kline’s view that Eve converted to the new satanic religion, and became the first missionary of that new religion. But take heart: this episode ends with the gospel!

This week Lee and Chris discuss the other side of the eschatological sanctions: the curse sanction. We also discuss judgment and what it means to know good and evil. This subject can get very heavy – even depressing – but we make sure to bring it back to the gospel. The good news is that we do not bear the curse or the final judgment because Jesus has borne the curse for us!

Due to our enthusiasm for Kingdom Prologue, we press on! First of all, we talk about God, the Alpha-Author. Furthermore, we talk about the distinction between God as the creator, and everything else as the creation. Most noteworthy, we talk about how the ancient pagan myths are a garbled copy of the truth.

The elephant in the room is often the tension that exists between Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia (East) and Westminster Seminary California (West). That tension centers around the relationship between two doctrines: union with Christ, and justification. Listen in as Lee and Chris discuss this in a way that is intended to be fair to those with whom we disagree and magnifies Christ at the same time. You’ll have to be the judge of whether we accomplished that or not.

Lee has done a fair amount of reading about the Eastern Orthodox doctrine of theosis. As we discussed our way through Images of the Spirit, it seemed like there were some point of similarity between what Kline was seeing in the Scriptures about the Glory-Spirit replicating his image in human beings in terms of physical luminosity, and the Eastern Orthodox doctrine of theosis. We thought we would explore this idea in this episode.

This is a bit of a lesson in hermeneutics (or, how to read the Bible). We wanted to make it practical, so we chose a topic (immigration) that is filling the headlines and provoking comment from Christians and church bodies across the theological spectrum. However, almost no one who is chiming in is considering carefully enough the context of the biblical passages they are using. Lee and Chris want to use this as an opportunity to talk about the point of the Bible, how we should read it, and the consequences of misreading it.

Have you ever heard someone describe Israel’s conquest of the Canaanites as genocide or some other form of completely unjust war? Meredith Kline understood what Israel did in a very unique way. Lee and Chris think that Kline’s understanding of the Canaanite Conquest has helpful implications for defending the Christian faith against attacks regarding this particular episode in covenant history.

Lee and Chris have one more week off. But we are bringing you another lecture by Meredith Kline. This one is from March 25th 1999. It seemed appropriate for that time of the year that we especially tend to think about the future. Of course Meredith Kline is talking about that ultimate future in which we will dwell with God thanks to everything he accomplished for us in the person and work of his Son Jesus Christ.

In this episode, Chris Caughey talks with Lutheran pastor Jordan Cooper about the influence Meredith Kline’s books had on him while he was still Reformed – and how they continue to influence him today. Part of what makes this conversation so interesting is the “language barrier” that exists in the way that different theological traditions use theological language. But Chris and Jordan handle the communication and translation respectfully.

Only one week into our new series where we work through By Oath Consigned, and we’re already taking a break – but we think you’ll understand why. We are excited to have the opportunity to interview Jonathan Kline about his grandfather’s commentary – Genesis: A New Commentary – which was just recently published by Hendrickson Publishers. He has insight into this commentary that no one else will have. Also – notice how easy it is for him to rattle off the Hebrew – almost as if it were his first language. That definitely seems to be a trait of the Klines. Have a listen, and be sure to get a copy of the commentary as well as all of the other exciting resources listed in the show notes!

Now that the creation wars seem to have died down a bit, we thought that it would be interesting to revisit the subject of the Framework Interpretation of Genesis 1 and 2. Now that we don’t have to play defense as much, it seemed like a good time to give a positive presentation of the benefits of the Framework Interpretation, and to situate creation in the grand story that the Bible tells. To do this, we invited a special guest, our friend, Bill Baldwin to join us for the discussion. This episode is a little longer than most, but we think it’s well worth it.

Even though Meredith Kline invented new words at times, it is important to pause from time to time and take note of the fact that he was not the first one to say certain things. One seventeenth-century pastor-theologian who understood the Mosaic covenant very similarly to Meredith Kline was the English puritan Samuel Petto. Pastor Mike Brown of Christ United Reformed Church in Santee, CA was kind enough to come on the show and talk to Chris and Lee about the book that he has written about Petto, Petto’s view of the Mosaic covenant, and Petto’s pastoral use of his covenant theology for the comfort and assurance of believers. It was a privilege to talk to him, and we’re sure you’ll agree that it is a privilege to listen to him.
