Welcome to the beginning of a brand new, totally different approach to weight loss. Buckle up! You just might enjoy the ride this time.

What if your struggles with food and money come from the same place?

In this episode of The Life You Crave, Lia sits down with financial expert and author Michelle Campbell to explore the powerful connection between food shame and money shame. Together, they unpack why so many women repeat cycles of debt, dieting, and starting over — even when they know better.

Michelle shares her journey out of long-standing debt and explains why lasting change doesn't come from willpower, but from understanding the emotional root beneath our choices. Lia and Michelle discuss why you can't abstain from food or money, how self-image shapes behavior, and what it means to repair the relationship instead of repeating the cycle.

If you feel stuck, behind, or frustrated around food or finances, this episode offers clarity, compassion, and a grounded way forward.

Michelle Campbell was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, and began her educational journey in South Dakota before relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, to continue her studies. During her academic pursuits, she launched a real estate investment firm, marking the beginning of her entrepreneurial path. Over the years, Michelle expanded her ventures into various industries, including horticulture, where she founded an interiorscape company, and logistics, where she established a commercial trucking business. Drawing on the insights and expertise gained across these diverse fields, she transitioned into a career in the financial services industry.

Michelle is also the author of Bluebird, a memoir that candidly explores themes of trauma, heartbreak, and the resilience found in life's struggles. She is also the founder of a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals through financial literacy and fostering economic stability.

She enjoys traveling, cooking, exploring diverse cuisines, organizing, dancing, indulging in spa treatments, and spending quality time with her cherished Pomeranian.

On this episode Lia Pinelli explores emotional eating, a common but often unrecognized issue. Emotional eating isn't just stress-eating; it can be triggered by boredom, excitement, or anything that looks appealing. It involves eating for reasons other than physical hunger, which can hinder achieving peace with food. Signs of emotional eating include eating without hunger, impulsive choices, breaking self-promises, and feeling regret or anxiety after eating.   To combat emotional eating, Lia suggests feeling emotions without eating and creating a fulfilling life. She outlines four steps: awareness of feelings, identifying reasons for eating, assessing those reasons, and committing to a life more satisfying than food.

Do you ever feel like you can eat and eat and never really feel satisfied, and find it hard to stop because the food tastes so good? Or you’re just looking for that feeling of satisfaction and can’t seem to find it? I used to be like that, too. Spoonfuls of pasta, mac n cheese, bread and butter, cheese and crackers… there was no off switch until I was overstuffed. I could pick at food and eat and eat for days, never really feeling satisfied. I couldn’t figure out why I was insatiable until I learned about a concept called over-hunger which is exactly what I’m talking about on the podcast this week. This is Part 2 of the How I Did It series and I get down and dirty with how over-hunger is caused and what you can do if you suffer from it, too. The anti-aging industry is profiting massively off of American women’s anxiety about aging. If you’re one of those people whose tendency to overindulge skyrocketed since the pandemic started, don’t despair. You’re not alone. We all deal with this stress in different ways. Some of us take comfort in food to cope with it, others turn to drinking, or lash out at their loved ones. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, it’s part of being human.

Our brains are wired to steer us towards seeking pleasure and avoiding pain. We want to feel good. But, overeating (or overdrinking, for that matter) is a behavior that isn’t healthy in the long run, no matter how good we feel when we surrender to it. We succumb to these urges to avoid pain. But, the pain we’ll feel after a longer period of doing this will be much larger than the one we try to avoid.

If there’s one thing that almost always happens when we overeat, it’s that we feel worse after. And then we feel guilty and demean ourselves before we do it all over again. This doesn’t mean we’re powerless and can’t take action. It’s a vicious cycle, but we can break it.

That is why you want to listen to today’s episode. You’ll learn:

  1. Why anxiety is not the reason you’re overeating.
  2. Why relying on your willpower to break the pattern of overindulging is not sustainable in the long run.
  3. The truth about why your brain is making you overindulge in food or drinks.
  4. The (uncomfortable) strategy that will lead you towards transformation and stop being a slave to your urges.

If there’s one takeaway from today’s show, it’s that you’re not broken, and you’re able to change. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with you.

Truly accepting this will bring you peace of mind greater than any guilty pleasures you’ve been lately enjoying.

So you’ve been listening to my series on Back-2-Basics, and you jotted down a plan. You’ve gained momentum, and are feeling good about your progress.

You even planned for the holidays, and how to tackle the challenges of overeating and overdrinking.

But, you haven’t thought of the most important predator that can derail you from your weight loss tracks: food pushers.

Even though they’re well intentioned, food pushers can easily sabotage your weight loss goals.

But, only if you allow them. Sure, it’s hard to disappoint your auntie who has been slaving away on the stove for five hours. But, either way, someone’s going to get disappointed at the end.

Your auntie will forget that you’ve said no to her pecan pie ten minutes after you rejected her. But, you will feel bad about eating that pie days after you ate it.

There is an easy way out, and I’m talking about it in today’s episode, in which I go over:

  1. How food pushers sabotage our weight loss goals.
  2. Three practical ways in which you can handle food pushers.
  3. Why it feels bad to hurt the feelings of other people.
  4. Why you don’t need to be afraid of rejecting the advances of food pushers.

Remember, you want to make choices that bring you closer to the results you want. To the life you want. Let this guide you the next time someone wants to push you to do things that will break the trust you have with yourself.

You’ve heard it a million times: If you only control your portions, then you can lose weight, you can have a better relationship with food, and so on. But, these blanket statements don’t dive into the essence of the problem. Truth is, portion control rarely works.

It may on some occasions get you to shed some pounds. But, more often than not, there are hormonal and neurobiological aspects in play that largely influence what we eat and how much we eat.

If you constantly struggle with portion control, there might be a hormonal explanation for your overeating urges.

So tune in to today’s episode, where I share:

  1. The two main things at play when it comes to portion control and overeating.
  2. The alternative to portion control that was a game-changer for my relationship with food.
  3. The main reason you’re overeating.
  4. How to have a relationship with hunger that is productive, and not destructive.
  5. The well intentioned advice that you shouldn’t listen to.
  6. Tips on restoring your hormonal balance so that your eating urges don’t go out of whack.
  7. The difference between physical and emotional “bullshit” hunger.

The bottom line is, you can trust yourself around food, and you can trust yourself with hunger. The body is constantly sending you signals that it’s hungry. It also alarms you when it’s fed.

You are the one that is sometimes misreading its signals, and shuns its evolutionary wisdom. Never eat unless you’re really hungry. And I don’t mean starving.

If you’re hungry, and you don’t have a physical sensation of hunger, it’s probably an emotional urge to eat. And this is the moment where we most often overeat.

By overriding this urge, and simply responding to the body’s signals, we can transform our attitude towards eating.

Next time you feel that pang of hunger, pause, and be mindful of what your body and mind are saying. In time, you’ll know who’s telling the truth.

You know the drill. Come New Year’s time, or before the summer vacations, you decide to go on a particular diet or exercise plan. But, after a while, you fail to stick to the routine, and start beating yourself up for not following through.

This used to be me. I’ve gone through the fad diet plans and exercise routines, and then replaced them with new ones. And again, I beat myself up for not following through on them as well.

Thing is, this is a total waste of time and a huge drain of energy. We need to go to the root of the problem. Why aren’t we following through on a commitment we made to ourselves? What thoughts invade our brain when we’re thinking of calling it quits?

Most importantly, why are we letting ourselves down over and over?

There is an answer. And that’s why I want you to listen to today’s episode, where I talk about:

  1. The stories we tell ourselves about the reasons we don’t follow through.
  2. The power you have over deciding how to treat your body and mind.
  3. Fail-proof tips to follow through on your weight loss commitments.
  4. The questions you need to ask yourself when you feel that voice that’s telling you to quit.
  5. The power of mini-commitments.
  6. Systems vs goals.
  7. The key difference between the people who achieve goals and those who don’t.

It all boils down to a decision. Do you prioritize yourself and your goals instead of those of other people? You are in control, you have it in you to stay on the path.

Start implementing some of the things you hear in this episode, today. You might find that when that voice comes, it will run its course, leaving you with the power to make lifestyle choices that you actually like.

Morning routines are super trendy and popular for a good reason– they have the potential to change the trajectory of your entire day, and thereby your entire life.

If you don’t have the life you crave (yet)-- if you’re feeling chronically dissatisfied with your health, career, marriage, whatever– it is most likely because you’re being unintentional with the minutes and the days that you have to create that for yourself.

I’m going to teach you how to build your own TLYC (The Life You Crave) Morning Routine to organize your life by organizing your brain, which will become the blueprint for achieving and maintaining your goals in a way that feels like love.

The key to achieving and maintaining your goals is to organize your brain and therefore organize your day around those goals.

On today's episode I give you a framework to do just that.

Tune in to hear how I do this in 15 minutes or less every mornin and how you can create your own TLYC morning routine.

In this episode, I wrap-up my four part Back-2-Basics series. It’s time to learn to appreciate the work you’ve done leading up to this point.

Obligation-thinking leads us to think we don’t have the time to celebrate, and that we don’t deserve to treat ourselves for following through on our goals.

This cannot be further separated from the truth. It’s time to celebrate. The importance of celebration wins, small or big, cannot go understated. I’m not talking about “cheat meals” that easily turn into “cheat days”.

We’re staying away from the pleasures we’re hardwired to seek, and crave. I want you to satisfy those desires without compromising your waistline.

And it’s totally possible to do this without binging on cakes and donuts.

In the final part of the series, you’ll learn:

  1. The importance of finding reasons to celebrate.
  2. Ways in which we can be our biggest cheerleader.
  3. Finding joy in the process, and not in the results.
  4. How to reframe your mindset about what success looks like to you.
  5. Tips on staying on the path, regardless of how times you slip-up.
  6. Small ways in which you can appreciate your progress.
  7. How celebrating your wins can lead to a massive impact on your relationship with food.

Rewarding yourself on your wins doesn’t mean that you need to allow yourself to fall off the wagon and return to where you started. It can be as simple as going for a walk and listening to your favorite podcast or audiobook.

You don’t even need to do this. But, you’ll be missing out on the impact celebrating your wins can have on your life, and the enjoyment you squeeze out of it.

When we’re trying to lose weight, we often associate the “trying” part with suffering. We’re too hard on ourselves, we starve, and we feel constantly depleted.

The funny part is, we know the recipe for success. We know what we have to do to lose weight. And still, when we make a mistake, we feel like a failure. Often, we even give up as soon as it becomes uncomfortable.

And this is what I want to emphasize in today’s episode. We are hardwired to seek comfort, and avoid feeling discomfort. Because of this, we associate food with pleasure. And since we evolved to seek pleasure, we seek food to comfort us when negative feelings appear.

When it becomes hard to follow through on our plan, a bit of discipline goes a long way. You have the power to stop in your steps and ask yourself if you really want to regress to the beginning.

In the second part of the “Back-2-Basics” series, you’ll learn:

  1. The number one reason that we don’t have the results we want in life.
  2. How to avoid shaming yourself when you eat foods that aren’t healthy.
  3. Tips on following through on your plans in an honest and realistic way.
  4. Why failure is inevitable and why you need to become comfortable with it.
  5. The benefits of adopting a learning mindset, instead of giving up.
  6. Being kind to your slip-ups when you’re in the middle of your weight loss journey.
  7. How reflection and being mindful of your emotions helps you to stay on course.
  8. The power of talking to yourself like you’re talking to a child.

In this episode, you’ll learn how to go further than planning, follow through on your goals, and learn from your failures instead of giving up.

Give yourself the kindness you deserve, and you’ll see how success suddenly becomes more easy to reach.

September is a stressful month. Kids go back to school and summer fun becomes a distant memory.

It’s a time of change. Unfortunately, not always for the better. It’s easy to lose sight of the fundamentals, the basics of getting back on track. Back on track with eating healthy, and feeling good.

Today’s episode (back by popular demand!!) is a replay from last September and is the first in the four-part series devoted to helping you to easily plan and follow through on your short-term and long-term goals. And I’m talking all about planning and how it can sabotage the relationship we have with ourselves and with food.

We need to make a promise to ourselves, and follow-through. If we don’t, we can lose trust in our ability to achieve any goal. We won’t have the confidence to eat what we want, lose weight, and feel joy while doing it.

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This applies not only to weight loss, but to every aspect of your life.

So listen in, and learn:

  1. Planning and why it is so important for achieving your goals.
  2. How instant gratification is sabotaging your weight loss journey.
  3. Imagining your future self and her relationship with food.
  4. The reasons you’re not following through on your goals.
  5. The power of reflection on the results of your planning and your actions.

Bottom line, planning is a fundamental habit that will help you establish trust in yourself and your ability to follow through. It's the building block to all other things we’ll be discussing in the following episodes from this series.

So, pull out your notebook and start planning!

We've all heard of stress eating, but have you ever made the connection between physical pain and the desire to eat?

As someone who has struggled with chronic pain since childhood (both back pain and severe menstrual cramps) I noticed the connection between my pain and my desire to self-soothe with food early on. Cramps? I feel like French fries, red wine, and chocolate will help... Neck strain? Salty popcorn sounds good right now...

It wasn't conscious, but once I became aware of it I could do something about it. After trying EVERYTHING from acupuncture to yoga to chiropractic to massage I finally found the solution in working with Tracy Rodriguez, Corrective Exercise Specialist and CEO of the Work Pain Free Program.

Working with Tracy opened my eyes to what the REAL problem was regarding my back pain and she taught me how to treat myself back to wellness. Working with her truly changed my life and I am so excited to share her with you all here on today's podcast.

When we feel bad, we think that eating will make us feel better, when in fact it usually works to exacerbate our crappy feelings.

The problem here isn’t food. It's that we haven’t made the effort to diagnose the REAL problem.

But when our brains think the problem is the shitty feelings we seek a quick, cheap dopamine hit in the form of food.

When you stop using food to solve a problem, your whole life changes– for the better.

  1. Your kids don’t just pay attention to what you say is true about them, but they notice what you say is true about yourself.
  2. Embrace unapologetic eating and lifestyle. I also say to be unapologetic about rejecting self-denial.
  3. If you want to change you’ve got to have a fierce commitment to loving yourself.

On today’s episode I’m going to share with you my formula for building habits that stick.

You’re going to want to stick around if you’re someone who…

  1. Has tried to change your eating behaviors numerous times and just can’t seem to stick to it
  2. You’ve tried every diet in the book, from WW to fasting to Keto.
  3. You want to live healthier, beyond food! You want to exercise more often, or meditate, but you never seem to stick with it for long.

In my experience, there are two key factors to building habits that stick, and I’m going to share the first one with you today, and the second on next week’s episode.

The first key factor to building habits that stick is that habits must come from your identity.

Identity is important for efficiency and belonging, however it has one major pitfall– we often mistakenly believe identity is innate, set in stone, unchangeable.

  1. I’ve always struggled with my weight.
  2. I’ve always had a big appetite.
  3. I never follow through on myself.
  4. I always self-sabotage.

These beliefs affirm who we think we are, and if we think we are destined to overeat or be overweight or self-saotage, we don’t bother trying to change it because it’s out of our control.

But remember, identity is just a set of beliefs and qualities, and beliefs are just thoughts we think are true.

The only difference between someone who overeats and someone who doesn’t is the habits they’ve built with food– and those habits were born from their beliefs about themselves.

I didn’t just make up a new sentence and start repeating it in my bathroom mirror until I believed it.

Instead I did the following:

  1. I first DECIDED I was not longer going to tolerate overeating.
  2. I am the HBIC (Head Bitch In Charge) of my mouth, my choices, and my life so if I am choosing to overeat I am also capable of choosing otherwise.
  3. I COMMITTED to that decision. Deciding is something we do once, but commitment is what we do everytime we put something in our mouths.
  4. I used the Hunger Scale to learn to recalibrate my hunger signals so I could tell when I was hungry and when I was satisfied.
  5. I practiced the thought (which is how we form beliefs– by practicing thoughts) that I am someone who does not overeat. I eat only when I’m hungry.

If you haven’t already watched my free Eating Without Fear training that teaches you how to use the Hunger Scale in the way I’ve outlined on the show today, what in the world?!?! Take less than 20 minutes and run, don’t walk, over to liapinelli.com and get in the know today!

And check back in next week when I share the second key factor to building habits that stick– this one is my favorite so don’t miss it… I know you’ll love it, too.

Do you remember Susan Powter screaming “STOP THE INSANITY” into your TV set to drive home her point that “Fat makes you fat!!”

Be afraid… be very, very afraid of fat!!

THAT is what they wanted you to believe.

Hold up… I lost 30 lbs. years ago by eating MORE fat, not less.

But, why would anyone want us to be afraid of natural fats? And who is “they”, you ask?

The sugar industry, in bed with the diet industry. That’s who.

The diet industry in the United States is a multi billion dollar industry with a vested interest in keeping you confused.

When you remove fat from food, guess what happens?

It loses all of its FLAVOR because fat IS flavor. In the 80s and 90s during the fat free diet fad flavor was removed from food and the sugar industry stepped in to replace that flavor.

Fat is your friend. Fat makes you feel SATIATED!! If your finding yourself constantly hungry you may not be eating enough fat.

After inhaling two Double-Doubles and two orders of fries (animal style), I still wasn’t “stuffed”. Something was up. Because despite not feeling physically full, my eating behaviors were… suspicious.

Recognizing something was off, I advised myself to do exactly what I advise my clients to do: I put on my Sherlock Holmes cap, grabbed my magnifying glass, and began an investigation to solve the mystery.

Tune in to this Sherlock Holmes mystery thriller to hear each clue that led me to figure out what was the real reason I was overeating.

Here’s a hint: my eating behaviors that night were a SYMPTOM of not paying attention to what my body, mind, and spirit needed in times of secondary terror and trauma.

What I had really needed was space for grieving, confusion, fear, and anger. I needed deep connection with loved ones, to hug my husband and child, and to rest. I needed what I call unapologetic self-care, not a double order at In N Out.

Here’s what I want you to know:

  1. I didn’t gain a bunch of weight from that episode because I have practiced this kind of self-awareness + sleuthing enough to interrupt the cycle before it can have an impact on me long term
  2. I didn’t give myself permission to say “Eff it” and eat everything in sight for three days because “I already effed up! Might as well.”
  3. I didn’t stop the cycle with willpower, self-deprecation, or deprivation. I stopped it with self-love, self-awareness, and compassion.

Tune in to hear the 8 things I did to recover from overeating.

“I have one rule.” I said. “You can’t say I don’t know.” Because when you are trying to solve a problem and you say “I don’t know.” you just ended the conversation.

There is no coach in the world that can tell you WHY you’re doing what you’re doing, but the only way to figure it out is to get CURIOUS about why, and never say I don’t know.

When we say “I don’t know.” we choose cognitive laziness over curiosity, imagination, exploration, and discovery.

Changing your behaviors requires self-inquiry and a willingness to LEARN about yourself so that you can lovingly change yourself for the better.

You’ll never be able to change your behaviors if you “don’t know” what’s driving them.

Stop saying “I don’t know.” and start asking yourself why.

Why did I eat the oreos?

Because I was tired. Stressed. Bored. Because I wanted to!!

Now you know why you did it and this is where the work of real change begins.

Travel is often a source of anxiety for various reasons * Fear of having to put on a bathing suit * Fear of being seen after gaining the COVID 19, or more * Fear of gaining weight while on vacation * Fear of feeling deprived

We plan to eat all the things, essentially planning to overeat the entire trip– because if weight gain is inevitable, we might as well make it worth it!!

We stuff the guilt and shame we feel while overeating by numbing ourselves with more, and more food and drink, telling ourselves

  • I’ll make up for it when I get home.

  • You only live once!

  • I’m doomed to be overweight anyway so I might as well enjoy it

All of these thoughts may seem carefree and free-spirited in the moment, but if you dig a little deeper you’ll find that what’s underneath them are feelings of defeat and disappointment– two feelings most of us don’t want to feel on vacation.

Eliminate travel food anxiety and weight gain by…

  1. Make a list of the top 3-5 feelings you want to have on your vacation and reverse engineer your experience from there
  2. Plan to make REAL pleasure the priority
    1. Don’t tolerate the Eff its!
  3. Eat 2:2 on the hunger scale which you can learn for free at liapinelli.com, click on the black bar at the top of the page

Today, Lorraine talks about her struggles before working with Lia, her coaching experience, her transformation after changing her diet, breaking habits with willpower, and she gives her advice to those who are currently struggling.

Here’s a look at today’s episode:

  1. There’s a misconception that exercise compensates for the way that we eat.
  2. Just because something is vegan doesn’t automatically mean it’s healthy.
  3. The key to successfully breaking a habit is shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset.
  4. There is such a thing as overeating healthy food.
  5. The feeling of control after the transformation is really a feeling of self-authority.

Tune in to today’s episode 🎙️to hear what me, a woman named “Janet”, and Alexis Bolino of the Real Housewives of OC🧡 have in common.

I’ll give you hint: it has to do with eating 🍰 out of the trash and feeling out of control 🤐with food.

I used to think I struggled so hard with food because I lacked willpower or discipline until I learned the 💫REAL💫 reasons were:

  1. Biochemical: the more processed foods I ate, the more I craved (chemically)
  2. Psychological: I ate my stress, exhaustion, anxiety, excitement, resentment, anger, you-name-it-feeling

When you reduce your hunger and desire for food to natural states you can live at your natural weight.👏👏👏

AND when you learn to stop eating for psychological (i.e. emotional) reasons you will absolutely END your struggle with food and weight 🤯.

If you’ve ever eaten out of the trash, or felt like candy🍬 is haunting you, or done anything else that felt shameful 😔 around food– I want you to know you’re not alone, you’re not broken, and there’s nothing wrong with you.♥️

When clients start my 90 Days to Food Freedom program we dive right into the practical side of things so they can start losing weight and feeling really good in their own skin right away.

But we’ve all done that before, right? Started a new way of eating (i.e. diet) and felt good, only to fall off the wagon shortly thereafter…?

The difference between those old diet experiences and my 90 days program is, first of all– the changes we make feel GOOD and are totally doable for a lifetime. But just as importantly, the biggest difference is that after those changes are implemented we begin to do the transformational work of shifting our identities to become someone new with food, and that requires a strong commitment to mindfulness.

Here’s how we do it:

  1. Get very intentional about what it is you WANT: it’s about more than weight loss.
  2. Ask yourself: if I had these things, how would I FEEL. You can even start with just weight loss– if I lost the weight, how would I feel? Some common answers are:
    1. Confident
    2. Sexy
    3. Good!
  3. Allow yourself to imagine who you would BE if you were someone who lost the weight and created this life you crave
  4. Use meditation, visualization, and/or journaling to imagine yourself there
  5. What is one thing I can do today that will take me just one step closer to being her

On today’s episode we are talking about self-sabotage, why we do it, and how to stop. I’m going to give you three actionable steps that you can start today! Let’s dive in!

Self-sabotage leads to chronic self-disappointment, meaning chronically feeling disappointed in yourself, and chronic self-disappointment often leads to a heaping dose of negative self-talk.

And what do you do when you feel crappy? You eat. Brownies make us feel better. Popcorn, wine, Taco Bell, Starbucks… you name it. Because we don’t want to be alone with that person who talks to us that way, so we numb out the voice that tells us we suck.

We eat to self-soothe from the self-abuse we’ve just inflicted on ourselves… and the cycle continues.

How do we stop self-sabotage? Here are the four steps I teach in my 90 Days to FF program:

  1. You must commit to building trust with yourself– just like in a relationship with someone who’s broken your trust, it will take time to rebuild it
  2. You must stop talking shit to yourself– you wouldn’t tolerate it from others!
  3. You must decide you’re worthy
  4. You must stop planning to eat foods you don’t love.

Now, we might intellectually understand these four steps in theory, but applying them in your life and truly integrating them takes guidance like that which we offer in the 90 Days program. In the program my women learn how to build unbreakable trust with themselves, stop the negative self-talk tape looping in their heads, how to feel worthy enough to put their health and wellness first, and how to eat in a way that they love and still lose weight. If you’re ready to join them and get these results, too, head over to https://www.liapinelli.com.

In the meantime, here’s where I recommend you start to smash your self-sabotage habit:

  1. Plan REALISTICALLY what you’re going to eat 24 hours in advance
  2. Eat exactly that.
  3. Celebrate following through!
    1. Don’t try to be perfect– perfect is the enemy of good
    2. And speaking of perfect, tune in next week when we talk about how perfectionism is effing up your goals.

Have you ever said "I know what I need to do, I'm just not doing it!"

If you said yes, then you, my friend, are probably an emotional eater. And no, the image below is NOT what I mean by emotional eater... When I talk about emotional eating, people often think of something like the image above and think "That's not me!"

But emotional eating doesn't typically look like that.

Emotional eating can be eating because you're...

  • Bored
  • Stressed
  • Excited
  • Or something just "looked good"

Whenever we eat for any reason other than real, physical hunger we are likely eating for emotional reasons.

And there is NO SHAME in that, however for many of us emotional eating is the #1 reason we struggle to find peace with food.

Here's how you can tell if emotional eating is sabotaging your health goals:

  1. You frequently eat when you're not physically hungry (learn how to recalibrate your physical hunger & satiety cues HERE).
  2. You struggle with impulsive choices in the moment that you regret later.
  3. You break promises to yourself to eat "better" or differently.
  4. You beat yourself up after eating.
  5. You feel regret after eating.
  6. You're anxious or stressed about eating.
  7. You don't trust yourself around food.
  8. You often celebrate with food.
  9. You often reward yourself with food.

For the women in my 90 Days to Food Freedom program, emotional eating is THE biggest obstacle to permanent, sustainable weight loss.

It is emotional eating that never gets addressed in traditional diets. Even Noom isn’t there for you at 9:00pm after you finally get the kids to bed and finally have a minute to yourself and all you want is a big ass glass of wine, a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, and your current binge show on Netflix.

The SOLUTION to emotional overeating is:

  1. Learn to feel our feelings without eating/drinking.
  2. Create lives we LOVE, unapologetically.

On the podcast I go in depth on the four steps toward that solution, which are...

  1. Become aware of your feelings! It's cliche, but SO true.
  2. When you're eating, identify your REASON for eating.
  3. Ask yourself if you like your reason, then decide if you want to continue.
  4. Commit to creating a life you love more than food! Create a life that is better than a BROWNIE!

Want to know what THE biggest key was to my sustained 30 lbs. weight loss?

Learning how to reduce my desire to overeat.

I used to suffer from what I call over desire, which is the miserable preoccupation with so-called tempting, forbidden foods.

I define over desire as either experiencing strong cravings for certain foods and/or constantly thinking– or obsessing– about food.

These strong cravings– for me it used to be for wine, bread & cheese, and chocolate peanut butter cups-- made me feel powerless over food. I just couldn't resist!!

It’s the feeling of the brownies calling to you from the kitchen, or your kids french fries taunting you from their plates. You think of nothing else while you're choking down your salad except for how badly you want the fries but how you “shouldn’t”.

THAT is over desire.

Here’s how we typically try to solve the problem of over desire: we try to use willpower, discipline, and resistance to conquer it.

We wake up every day and put on a suit of armor, ready to head into battle with sinful sugary treats, wicked buttery carbs, and tantalizing bottles of wine.

Guess what, I don’t need to tell you this but I’m gonna– war is exhausting. Battle is depleting. And no one can keep it up for a lifetime.

Because when you’re battling such a powerful desire, you’re destined to lose due to exhaustion.

And I have good news for you– you don’t need it. It doesn’t work anyway! But you really don’t need it.

There is a reason you’re experiencing over desire– and no, it’s not because you're inherently flawed or there is something wrong with you.

Tune in to the podcast this week to learn how our over desire is driving the perpetual, miserable cycle of overeating foods that sabotage our goals!

In my 90 Days to Food Freedom program I take my clients step-by-step through the process of dismantling their over desire and they are constantly mind-blown just like I was that this is even a thing… that this is even possible.

But it is. It was possible for me and it’s possible for you.

If you want to learn more head over to liapinelli.com and book a call with me to learn more about the 90 Days to Food Freedom program.

Everybody wants to know HOW I did it.

This week's podcast is the first in a multi-episode series that shares whatcha all have been asking for.... PLUS, if you're not a podcast listener, be sure to head over to my Instagram where I will be recording the same story in my Highlights so you can catch it there!

Here's the overview:

  1. Dieting screws up our natural hunger and satiety levels, causing metabolic dysfunction which in turn can slow our metabolism and pretty much screw us over in the long run, resulting in increased weight GAIN and resistance to weight loss over time (how's that for a run on sentence!!)
  2. Good news!! This can be undone!! Amen!!
  3. Step #1 STOP dieting and counting calories immediately. It is a huge waste of your precious mental real estate.
  4. Step #2 Reactivate your natural hunger and satiety levels (I teach you how in the podcast)

This first episode in the series isn't the end of the road so keep tuning in to get the full story on HOW I did it.

There's no such thing as TMI in my world, especially when it comes to periods.

After all, if it weren't for periods, none of us would be here right now so let's just get over it already!

For D E C A D E S I suffered from incapacitating monthly pain and exhaustion. I dreaded getting my period... until I met the magical Tara McCann.

Tara is a Menstrual Health Coach (yup, you read that right) who supports women to use the power of their menstrual cycle to tune in to what their body needs and to work with their body instead of against it.

Tara taught me that...

  1. My pain and exhaustion were not normal and I'd been dismissed by my doctor for years. I needed to advocate for myself, which I did and am forever grateful.
  2. I can leverage my cycle to gain insight, clarity, and ultimately productivity in my lives.

Plus, even if you don't have a period, Tara teaches us how you can still leverage the cycle of the moon to reap the same benefits.

The past two episodes were all about creating your meal capsule using the only three food groups that you really need: veggies, fat, and protein.

Today, I’m going to get into the many ways that you can combine these three food groups into meals that are simple, quick, sustainable, and tasty.

Here’s a look at today’s episode:

  1. Keep it simple and abundant.
  2. Repurpose what you’ve cooked.
  3. You can freeze almost anything.
  4. Soups are a great way to repurpose leftover.
  5. Eating healthy is about feeling better in your own skin.
  6. Choose time and sanity over money.

Listen to this week’s episode, How to Eat Healthy Part 3, to learn how to combine your three most important food groups into tasty meals for the entire family.

Have you ever said....

  • "I just need to find the motivation."
  • "I quit because I wasn't motivated anymore."
  • "If I could just get my motivation back..."

Motivation is the big lie we tell ourselves.

But it's a total lie.

You don't need more motivation to meet your goals-- and you certainly don't need it for sustainable weight loss.

I noticed in my own life that as my level of responsibility increased-- career, kids, saving money, making adult decisions-- my level of pleasure decreased. And I'm not down for that. On this episode of The Life You Crave we do a deep dive on pleasure, REAL versus false pleasure, because this concept has been KEY in ending my own habit of overeating and has actually increased the level of pleasure I get in my life.

Pleasure is EVERYTHING when it comes to more joy and less overeating during the holidays. Tune in to learn how!

With the holidays upon us many of us are having thoughts like... * Either I'll enjoy the holidays by indulging OR I'll be miserable and lose weight * Either I get to have fun and eat all the things or I’ll unhappy * Either I eat it all or I eat none of it

What if it doesn’t have to be this way?

I, along with my clients, have proven that there IS another way, a better way. And it might just surprise you.

If you've been listening to the Big Os series The Life You Crave Podcast this week you now know that the secret to ending the overwhem, over-obligation, and overeating is to first get really clear on what you WANT, and then go after it relentlessly.

If you're anything like me, when we make the decision to start putting yourself first a lot of guilt, shame, and fear can come up in the process.

  • It would be selfish to put my wants first.
  • Won't I become totally self-centered if I prioritize myself above all else?
  • If I only do what I want to do, nothing will get done!

Join me in the last of the Big Os four-part series on The Life You Crave Podcast this week to learn how to move past that guilt and shame and become unapologetically YOU.

And if you haven't gotten your free Big Os Audit Workbook, what are you waiting for? Together we can end overwhelm, over-obligation, and overeating for good.

I'm OK with you being disappointed in me.
I'm not sorry if I don't meet your expectations.

I used to be a big time people-pleaser.
I wanted people to like me.
I wanted to be a team-player.
I wanted everyone to be happy and that required me to do what they wanted me to do...
But at a great cost.

The cost was my own low key, under-the-surface disappointment in myself and dissatisfaction with my life.

I was always letting myself down, not doing what I wanted to be doing.

  • I would volunteer for things at work to impress my boss even when I really didn't want to do them.
  • I would meet up with friends after work on Friday nights so as to not disappoint them when really my body was screaming for a quiet night of trashy TV and bed by 9pm.
  • I would agree to go to my kid's soccer practice because I felt like I "should" as a mom, when really what I craved was alone time.
  • I would eat the cookies my colleague made to "not make her feel bad" even though I made a commitment to no sugary sweets this week.

I chose to disappoint myself over disappointing them every. single. time.

That was a recipe for deep dissatisfaction, resentment, and disappointment in my life.

When I would disappoint myself over and over, I'd go to food and wine to soothe myself, to make it all better, to find joy and pleasure in my life. Because "I deserve it."

And then it hit me: what I actually deserved was so much more than the conciliatory wine and chocolate that pairs so well with perpetual dissatisfaction and disappointment.

Join me on The Life You Crave Podcast this week to learn how I went from pissed-off-people-pleaser to unapologetically-me in a four-part series called The Big Os.

And if you haven't gotten your free Big Os Audit Workbook, what are you waiting for? Together we can end overwhelm, over-obligation, and overeating for good.

We are hardwired to want to please other people.

And as women we are socialized to give, to nurture, and to put everyone else's comfort level above our own.

It is virtuous, selfless, and generous.... or so we are told.

So we show up like a champ.

We say...
YES! to our bosses
YES! to our clients
YES! to our spouses
YES! to our kids
YES! to our friends
YES! to the PTA
YES! to our church
YES! to everybody except for one person... ourselves.

We pack our schedules tight, our To Do lists are never ending.

I'll sleep when I'm dead. We say.
This is important. We say.
I'm exhausted. We say.
But I have to. We say.

We end up feeling obligated because we over-obligated ourselves.

Over-obligation breeds deep resentment, dissatisfaction, and yup!-- you guessed it, overeating.

Join me on The Life You Crave Podcast this week where we tackle Over-Obligation in a four-part series called The Big Os.

And if you haven't gotten your free Big Os Audit Workbook, what are you waiting for? Together we can end overwhelm, over-obligation, and overeating for good.

Do you find yourself overeating in the evenings and weekends?
There's a reason for that, you know.
A good one, too.
And it's not because there's something wrong with you.

It's because of what I call The Pressure Cooker Effect and this month on The Life You Crave podcast we are diving deep on what's causing the overwhelm and what you can do about it.

If you struggle with overeating or over-drinking, AND you find yourself constantly saying things like...

I am so overwhelmed.
My To Do list is never ending.
I feel like I'm playing whack-a-mole constantly.

...then you don't want to miss this month's podcast series, The Big Os, because it's made just for you.

In this episode, Lia wraps up her four part Back-2-Basics series by emphasizing the importance of celebrating wins without seeking food as a pleasure source. You are hardwired for pleasure, your brain seeks it, craves it, needs it - so instead of telling yourself you don't have the time and/or you don't deserve it, following Lia's recommendations for satisfying that desire for joy without compromising your waistline.

Lia is one smart cookie. Despite holding degrees from both Stanford and UC Berkeley she was unable to crack the code on her struggle with overeating for decades. No matter how many books read, diets tried, or mindful eating methods subscribed to she could not resolve her struggle with food and weight. After becoming a life coach in 2016 she learned about weight loss coaching and was totally skeptical-- after all, if it worked she would have tried it already! She decided to give it a go anyway and was blown away by the results. Not only did she lose weight without using willpower or resistance, but she no longer experienced the over-hunger and cravings that had plagued her since childhood. Weight loss coaching provided the missing link!! It not only helped her figure out what to eat, but it addressed her mindset around food and weight. She learned to think differently which led her to eat differently and in a simple, sustainable way. That was 30 pounds ago. Today she lives happily with her family in California and maintains her natural weight without counting calories or carbs. She’s on a mission to teach other women how to ditch the diet drama and create the lives they crave, unapologetically.

Motivation is NOT what you need to meet your goals. Here's what is. =====================
