Creative passion can be the glue that holds us together during challenging times. In this episode, I was joined by Lauren Fitzmaurice, an elementary teacher, calligrapher and hand lettering artist. It was during a difficult year in her life when her love for lettering emerged. She shares her story of how she got started and her advice for those who are curious about this craft. Lauren’s passion for lettering began 5 years ago right after her youngest son recovered from open heart surgery. Her mom bought her an online calligraphy class so that she could learn a hobby and have something to do for herself to help with healing and recovering from a difficult and stressful year. As Lauren learned calligraphy, she started sharing her work on Instagram and over the years has grown a large following with her lettering tips for lefties, positive quotes, and love of bright colors. She’s also loved the opportunity to work with brands she loves and adores teaching lettering and calligraphy in her own community through her in-person workshops. Lauren’s mission for Renmade Calligraphy is to lift others with letters and she continues to strive to bring joy and creativity to others’ lives through her love of lettering.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of being hard on ourselves when we’re chasing after our goals. In this episode, I was joined by YouTube content creator, Melanie Ham and we talked about why we should put less pressure on ourselves as creatives. Melanie got started on YouTube in 2011 after wanting to connect with other makers and quickly realized her love for sharing content. She shares how she started it as a side hustle, how she deals with criticism on the platform and what she does to stay grateful during challenging times.
What’s in this episode:
About Melanie:Melanie took a beginning sewing class at Joann Fabrics back in 2007 and bought a sewing machine shortly after. She started sewing crafty stuff, just simple things and then in 2010 made her first quilt and has been obsessed ever since.
In December of 2011 she started her youtube channel to first connect with other makers online. At the time she was an active duty military spouse living away from family, and desired that connection with other creatives. She also wanted to share her latest projects and teach others how to make them as well. It took off beyond her wildest dreams with now nearly 650k subscribers and 55 million views on Youtube.
Her favorite thing about being a creative content creator is the ability to work from home and keep her family the top priority. She lives in a suburb of Los Angeles with her husband and 2 children.

Consistency is needed for growth in any business or endeavor you take on if you want to see growth and success. That’s why I had to bring on Teela Cunningham, founder of Every Tuesday. The name of her business came from the very idea that she would produce and share new content with her audience every Tuesday. In this episode, we talk about her journey of starting her business and why she strives for consistency. She shares how she finds inspiration for creative projects and her advice around managing your time and setting your own deadlines. Be sure to listen fully through so you don’t miss the funny ending! (This episode was pre-recorded on July 29, 2020)
What’s in this episode:
About Teela:Teela is a graphic designer and hand letterer based out of Atlanta, GA. In early 2014, she published her first YouTube tutorial as a way of sharing her program tips and knowledge with others. The kind responses were overwhelming, which led her to publish a new design, lettering or illustration tutorial every Tuesday since then. Her weekly tutorials led to online courses and in 2015, she and her web developer husband, Spencer, quit their full time jobs and pursued their business, aptly named Every Tuesday together. Teela now offers online courses and digital products in addition to her continued free weekly tutorials. After 5 years, millions of tutorial views and over 100k students taught, the Tuesday tutorial tally continues with no end in sight.

There’s so much greatness that can come from honing in on the things that bring you joy. In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Alicia Harrison, founder of Crafts of a Different Shade. We touched on so many important topics in this episode around giving yourself grace, finding peace and taking time to rest. Alicia shared how she got started in crafting and how creativity has helped her to cultivate greater confidence. We talked about mom guilt, balancing creative dreams while working a day job and why you need to set boundaries in all areas of your life. (This episode was pre-recorded on July 29, 2020)
What’s in this episode:
About Alicia:An advocate for inclusion in all areas, crafting is where Alicia's efforts take root. She describes herself as not your normal crafter! You won't hear stories about her growing up with a paintbrush in her hand, most likely it was a book or microphone. However, she has always thought and seen things from a creative perspective.
A Government Contracts Manager by day but a creative 24x7 she founded Crafts of a Different Shade in 2016 from a whisper and over the years has grown to love crafting and develop the much-needed patience that comes along with creating and leading. Outside of creating, she loves offering a practical, supportive, encouraging way to learn crafts, party favors, and anything else creative that her community needs. Away from my craft table, you’ll catch her being a mom to her very active, tall smart, handsome 14 year old son, engaging on FB or IG, shopping, posting hilarious and inspiring things to her IG stories, or spending time laughing with friends and family.

Do you hold yourself to a high standard that isn’t always attainable? A lot of creatives find themselves doing this and it can set us up to be really hard on ourselves when we don’t meet those expectations. In this episode, I was joined by painter and author Tracy Verdugo. We talked about setting realistic expectations for ourselves and our creative projects. She shares so much wisdom in this episode about seeing the world through the eyes of a child, how to get more involved in the creative community during the pandemic and advice on taking the leap into the creative venture you’ve been dreaming about! (This episode was pre-recorded on July 6, 2020)
What’s in this episode:
About Tracy:If Tracy Verdugo was given the opportunity to coin a term for a new art movement based around what she teaches she might call it “Curiosity and Wonderism” or maybe “Loosen-upism” or “Endless possibilitism”.
When she is not hanging out with her family in their artsy adobe home in a small village on the shores of Jervis Bay, Australia, or throwing paint around in her little purple studio in their backyard, you may find her painting beside thermal pools on an Italian island with an eager group of students, Aperol Spritz in one hand, paintbrush in the other, or sitting in a circle on St Pete Beach, Florida, listening intently as women share their stories of creative longing.
Tracy is an inspiration instigator, prolific painter, bestselling author and lover of the written word, smitten traveler and soaker up of all that is beauty-full. She teaches her Paint Mojo and other creative workshops all over this amazing planet and reminds her students of the wonder that already resides within them. Her works are vibrant and filled with joy, inspired both by global travels and the simple beauty of the focused moment.
Since 2000 Tracy has held 18 successful solo exhibitions and her works are held in collections both in Australia and internationally. Mostly though, she is mama bear to two gorgeous, zest-filled daughters, Santana and Cece, and co-adventurer in life with her amor of 34 years, the talented and brilliant Marco.

Did you know that you have the capability to put your energy into positivity? That you have the capacity to cultivate a lens of optimism in your life? Today’s guest, Mathew Boudreaux is the creative behind Mister Domestic. Mathew has a great perspective on living your life for yourself and the power of incorporating gratitude into your everyday. In this episode, we discuss how the loss of his sister made him realize how precious life is. This revelation inspired him to rebuild himself for the better. We explore how to nurture creative confidence. He talks about his daughter and how she inspires him to build his brand. Matthew also shares advice on getting into a craft that you’ve been thinking about pursuing.
What’s in this episode:
About Mathew:Howdy! Howdy! This is Mathew Boudreaux (AKA Mister Domestic), presently residing in the Pacific Northwest with my husband, our 7-year-old daughter Helena, and two cats Jordan & Camden. I am originally from Houston, TX and have managed to live all over the country during my adult life, but finally settled down and call Camas, Washington home. During the day, I work in the pharmaceutical industry specializing in oncology, but am an artist by heart and have jokingly referred to myself as an artistic gypsy flowing from theater to modeling to photography to sewing.
I had learned to sew as a kid, but never really got into it until we had our daughter. I thought it would be a great way to connect with her if I could make her cool clothes. At almost 40, I felt that my taste-level had arrived and that I could make some pretty neat-o digs, if only I could figure out how to do it. Before Helena could even crawl, my husband bought me a couple sewing classes at Modern Domestic in Portland, which was the perfect jumpstart that I needed because I haven’t stopped since.

Life is about learning to adapt and let things go that no longer serve us. Today on the podcast I had on a friend, Lola Berry. Lola is someone who has mastered the art of letting go of what doesn’t serve her and being compassionate to herself in the process. She is a nutritionist, author, accredited yoga teacher, content creator, presenter, speaker, podcaster and entrepreneur who has a colorful approach to nutrition. In this episode, we chat about why failures need to be celebrated and about cultivating a willingness to learn, take a chance and see how things go. We talk about a few of her entrepreneurial endeavors including her shift from a smoothie business to a coffee business and her experience of going back to school to study acting. She also talks about the importance of keeping people around who are cheering you on and why she thinks everyone should have a therapist. (This episode was pre-recorded on February 11, 2020)
What’s in this episode:
About Lola:Lola Berry is a nutritionist, author, accredited yoga teacher, content creator, presenter, speaker, podcaster and entrepreneur. She’s very colorful. She’s very passionate. She’s very Australian. Over the years she’s admired Steve Irwin and always wanted to bring that passion and enthusiasm to any project she focuses on.
Lola’s colourful approach to nutrition is supported by the Bachelor of Health Science she completed at Endeavour College of Natural Health, where she majored in Nutritional Medicine. Her nutrition studies propelled her to write ten books – Inspiring Ingredients, The 20/20 Diet, The 20/20 Diet Cookbook, Lola Berry’s Little Book of Smoothies and Juices, The Happy Cookbook, The Happy Life, Lola Berry’s Summer Food, Food to Make You Glow, Beauty Food and The Yoga Body.
In 2017 Lola opened Happy Place by Lola Berry, a smoothie bar co-created with Salvatore Malatesta from St Ali. After a successful 3 year run, the South Melbourne smoothie bar closed its doors so Lola could focus on her new venture – Lola Coffee. Lola launched Lola Coffee to the market in August 2019 and the first batch sold out within hours! The brew is a speciality instant coffee with lion’s mane; it’s a healthy, insane brain tonic coffee. Concurrently in 2019, Lola focused on media work. She completed courses and training in TV presenting (special focus on reading autocue), acting, dialect and voice work. Each of these are aimed at helping build her skill set as a professional speaker, TV presenter and professional media talent. She also launched Fearlessly Failing with Lola Berry – an interview podcast about failures with guests including Megan Gale, Georgia Love and Olivia White. Lola loves to interview people about the lessons and failures that have ultimately led to people's success. It’s the “not so shiny times'' that actually shape us and make us stronger. Lola created, hosts and produces (with Matt Sofo) the podcast.
Lola is a highly sought after expert for speaking, nutrition consulting, cooking demonstrations and yoga classes. Lola is also very passionate about mental health and talks about it being the key to all elements of health. Lola’s message is to be real, be kind and chase your dreams, no matter how big they are.

I’m thrilled to bring on today’s guest, Sheila Morovati, founder of the Crayon Collection and Habits of Waste. Sheila’s two non-profit organizations help to bridge the gap of waste that our world produces from things like crayons, plastic cutlery and straws. In this episode, she details her journey of building both non-profits and some of the inspiring brands she teamed up with (and how her organization even set a Guinness World Record!) We talk about the events she puts on, things you can do to eliminate the use of plastic cutlery and how to teach your kids about doing their part in recycling for our planet. (This episode was pre-recorded on February 7, 2020)

Sheila spearheaded the ban of plastic straws, utensils and stirrers in the City of Malibu and more recently through her #CutOutCutlery campaign she convinced UberEats to change the default setting in their application (globally) so that no one receives plastic cutlery unless they request it. She has also set a Guinness World Record in August 2018 for the largest crayon donation in history with over 1 million crayons donated to teachers at LAUSD and Head Start Centers in Los Angeles. Sheila lives in Los Angeles with her husband and 2 children.

It’s never too late to start chasing your dreams. Today I had the chance to speak with Mati Rose McDonough, an artist who decided to go after what many would call, “an impractical path” and chase her dreams of being a full time creative at the age of almost 30 years old. In this episode, we talk about navigating multiple streams of income as an artist, her transition of doing less illustration and into doing more teaching online. We talk about our experiences with art retreats and our favorite parts about attending them. We also explore the healing nature of creating, her advice for someone who is feeling uncreative and she also shares her wisdom for following what feels like the juiciest thing to do.
What’s in this episode:
About Mati:Mati Rose McDonough is an artist whose name is pronounced Matey, like Ahoy! She grew up near the sea in Maine and has lived in the Bay Area of California for 20 years. After wanting to be an artist for many years, but feeling like it was “impractical,” Mati took the leap and went back to art school at the California College of the Arts at almost 30. Now over 10 years later, she is still excited and terrified every time she sees a blank canvas, but embraces the adventure of life as an artist— penning her first book with this philosophy called “Daring Adventures in Paint”. She co-authored her 2nd art book "Painting the Sacred Within" with artist Faith Evans-Sills. She has had dozens of art shows, taught painting retreats internationally in Mexico, Morocco, Costa Rica and more to come. Her illustrations grace all sorts of products from phone cases to giant elephant billboards as well as her own home decor line and dress line too— dreams come true! Mati has illustrated four children’s books including “i carry your heart” written by poet ee cummings. Through her workshops, books, and popular online course, she spreads a warm message of creative courage: IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO SHOW THE WORLD YOUR MAGIC.

Sometimes when you’re building a creative business, you might not desire to build a massive company. You might instead want to take on larger projects and bigger clients. There is no right or wrong way to grow your business. Today I had the pleasure of chatting with a friend of mine, Adam Vicarel. Adam is a graphic designer and artist who has worked with big brands including Sharpie and So Delicious. In this episode, we talk about working with big brands, his thoughts on work-life balance and what his creative process looks like. We also talk about why he likes to keep his company small and how he breaks up his time between client work and passion projects.
What’s in this episode:
About Adam:Adam Vicarel is an Art Director, Artist, World Traveler, Snowboarder, Bug Eater, Rock Climber, and Human. Originally from Cleveland, and now residing in Denver, he has a Mid-Western work ethic and Western tendencies.
Adam started Vicarel Studios in 2015 after spending a year traveling — during that time he realized that ‘a job’ doesn’t need to be the complacent, same story that society tells us it should be.
Adam strives to infuse his experiences abroad and outdoors into his work, bringing a vitality to his client’s brands that is unable to be found elsewhere. With his ever-evolving team of collaborative, creative and strategic partners, Adam has created award-winning work and collaborated with brands such as NBC, So Delicious, Sharpie, New Belgium Brewing, Native Roots Cannabis Company and the SyFy Network.
Adam is a witty and passionate mid-western guy with a burning passion for doing things differently.
In his personal projects, Adam infuses his love for travel and the outdoors into his typography, illustration, photography and storytelling to create visceral experiences for his audience. That’s visceral, not Vicarel.
Adam enjoys donuts, whiskey, all things outdoors, hugging his mom, and experiencing new cultures and conversations with people from around the world.

Mindset really is everything. With the right mindset, you can achieve all of your greatest hopes and dreams. Today on the show, I was joined by the founder of Beekeeper’s Naturals, Carly Stein. Unlike competitors, they apply scientific rigor to their product development and commit to third-party pesticide testing to ensure they’re creating natural remedies that actually deliver.
They’re also a brand on a mission. By working exclusively with sustainable small-scale apiaries, partnering with leading bee research institutions, and prioritizing pesticide-free hive health above all else, Beekeeper’s Naturals works tirelessly to raise awareness and create a better environment for our world’s most important pollinators—the bees.

We chat about taking care of yourself by leaning on others for support and letting go of micromanaging. Jelena Aleksich is the creator of the Confetti Project, a photography project that douses amazing humans in confetti while asking, “what do you celebrate in your life right now?” She is driven by connection and makes it a point to explore what each subject celebrates. The Confetti Project was started as a photography series but has also transformed the lives of so many people with its therapeutic process that helps people let go and play. Over the past 4 years of working on this project, she’s learned that we all celebrate the same things and that all of life’s moments are deserving of celebrations. After dealing with her own devastating loss, she hopes to remind people that you can find purpose in pain and beauty in grief and I am so excited for you to hear the wisdom she shares in today’s episode.
What’s in this episode:
About Jelena:
Hi! I'm a graphic designer and photographer that douses amazing humans with confetti, exploring what they celebrate in their lives. As a creative entrepreneur with a background in Psychology and Design, I'm always trying to create powerful visual storytelling, which is how The Confetti Project was born. Not only was this project the first thing I ever finished, but it's changed my life in being able to tap into daily gratitude even amidst grieving the loss of a beloved parent. Now, my goal is to deeply connect with as many humans as possible, giving them space to fully let go of everything and be comfortable being vulnerable. My few loves: coffee table books, 20-second hugs and doing one thing a day that scares me.

I was so happy to speak with today’s guest, Katie Sabin. Katie is a maker who got started on her creative journey after having her twins and realizing she wanted to create something for herself. Today she shares how she got started with her Etsy shop and how her husband helped her come up with her business name, Just Add Sunshine. We discuss imposter syndrome and how she struggled with identifying as a “creative” and “artist”. Like me, Katie feels most alive when making things with her hands. In fact, she’s made it a practice to spend time creating every single day because it helps her feel more like herself.
What’s in this episode:

Cultivating genuine connections with those around her has been a key part of how Judith Martinez, founder and CEO of InHerShoes crafts a life that she loves. Today I had the honor of chatting with Judith about her non-profit organization and the work they do for young girls and women around the globe. We discuss having the confidence to go after your dreams and why she decided to skip law school and instead start a non-profit. We talk about how self-care isn’t selfish, why you should start asking for what you want and why you should set time aside each day to review and reflect on your life.
What’s in this episode:
About Judith:
Judith Martinez is the Founder and CEO of InHerShoes and Chief of Strategy at Orenda Collective. InHerShoes is a millennial led, social impact-driven, global organization committed to catalyzing courage for young girls and women around the world. Their mission is simple: activate the genius of a generation to make a difference in their communities now. A by-product being re-defying traditional standards of what it looks like to be a successful woman today. When she’s not catalyzing courage for women at InHerShoes, she’s equipping startup entrepreneurs and small businesses with strategies that grow profit and social impact at a boutique consulting agency, Orenda Collective.

We’re all so fortunate to be able to do work that is fun and creative every day. No matter who you are, how old you are or what stage of life you’re in - following your passions and what’s meaningful to you is always an option. Sometimes this means making big moves. Today I am joined by Alisha Cohen, a photographer, stylist and creative director who had a dream of leaving her corporate job to pursue something more creative. We discuss how she came to start her own creative agency and how she’s used platforms like Instagram to grow her business. She shares how she finds inspiration, the importance of setting boundaries as a creative and how she overcomes fears when starting a new endeavor.
What’s in this episode:
From Alisha:
I’m a photographer, stylist, creative director, and entrepreneur, but my story starts with an iPhone and a dream. I had no real photography training at all, and I got serious about Instagram as an experiment. I thought that If I could work to build a brand, agencies would hire me to do the same for the clients. The plan worked, and as a recent college grad, I was working as a social media manager and creative strategist for global brands in the advertising industry.
But I ended up hating it. I wanted the chance to be more creative and to develop my own point of view. I turned to Instagram once again and it quickly became my creative outlet. I shared the colors and things around me that brought me joy and people started to notice. Brands asked me if I could take photos for their Instagram accounts, so I bought a camera, learned how to use it through an online course, and went to work.
I hustled every night and weekend, creating content and building a client base. I would take conference calls on my 9-5 lunch break and meet potential clients at coffee shops near my office. When I had to start turning away clients because of my 9-5, I knew it was time to make a change. So at the age of 23, I left the advertising industry to focus on LISH creative full-time.
In the 3+ years since starting my agency, a lot has changed. I went from styling photos by myself in my parent’s spare bedroom in Pittsburgh, to moving into a Los Angeles Studio and hiring a team to help.
Personally, I got married, and my husband Graham finished medical school. He matched into an orthopedic surgery residency program, yay! So for the next 5 years, we’ll be living in the midwest and working to make our new house feel like a home.

As a creative business owner, it’s oh so important to develop a community of support to keep you going. On today’s episode, I am joined by Bonnie Kuhl, founder of Archer and Olive, a paper goods studio that she created after realizing the therapeutic benefits of journaling. We talk about the importance of community over competition and supporting other people in business. She shares how she set up a sourcing process, her experience with using a fulfillment center and how she knew it was time to hire a team. We discuss how being diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder led her to journaling and her tips for sharing what you do with the world.
What’s in this episode:
From Bonnie:
Journaling has radically changed the way I experience the world around me. My self-discovery journey started at university when I received a life-changing diagnosis. After learning I had bipolar disorder and general anxiety disorder, I struggled to navigate each transition while prioritizing my own mental health. The overwhelming pressure to have it “all figured out” followed me wherever I went. It wasn’t until a mentor introduced me to the power of journaling that I began to fully embrace life with my diagnosis. Paired with doctor-prescribed treatment, journaling helped me organize my thoughts, reduce my anxiety, and take control of my mental health. After experiencing my own transformation, I set out to share the empowering tool of journaling with as many people as possible through my paper goods studio, Archer & Olive. We design dot grid journals and daily agenda planners to help ambitious, purpose-driven people like you achieve your goals and exercise your creativity while giving you the tools to manage your mental health.

Life as a creator comes with its own set of challenges. Today I am chatting with my friend, Adele Toomey about all things scrapbooking and life as a YouTuber. We dive into how she got hooked on all things creative and how she manages her day to day as a wife, mom, creative and YouTuber (did I mention she runs not one, not two, but three different YouTube channels?). We chat about why she decided to create three different channels for her subscribers and how to figure out what content your viewers like best as a creator. She discusses what challenges she faces as a YouTuber including what she does when she hits a creative rut and how she overcomes mom guilt.
What’s in this episode:
About Adele:
My name is Adele and I am a paper-holic.
Yes, it may have taken years for me to admit it…but alas it is true. I am a primary school teacher by day (fourth year on Kindergarten this year) and often use the excuse “Oh, but I need it for work!” to justify my paper purchases. My husband has learned to “smile and nod” at my excitement over paper quality and adhesive possibilities…
I have been recording memories using art journals for many years but have embraced Project Life style scrapbooking for the last 2 years. I scrap weekly and use multiple inserts for each week due to the large amount of photos I take. I am almost finished my fourth PL volume for 2014 alone…eeek!
I love recording the simple moments in life, as well as the fun social times. As PL is my only means of photo-keeping, I tend to include as many important moments as possible through photos to remember life in years to come. I am an embellishing queen and cannot deem a layout complete without an embellishment cluster…or two…or three! I am also hoping to create an epic pocketed scrapbook style wedding album in the next few months.

Craft a Life You Love by taking a small step toward spreading joy for what lights you up, even if it seems as silly as a little sticker.
Would you believe me if I told you that stickers have the power to change the world? Today I brought on Mo Vasquez, founder of Pipsticks, mom of 4 and a life long sticker lover to discuss just that. We reminisce on how we used stickers in our childhood and the nostalgic feeling they bring. Mo tells us all about her subscription-business and how she fell into this line of work. She shares how she transitioned from side hustle to full time, how she brought her husband into the business and how they’ve scaled the business to over 60 countries. She shares how much joy she receives from having the ability to delight thousands of people each month with her stickers and her advice for running a creative business.
What’s in this episode:
About Mo:
As the head honcho of Pipsticks, I know my stickers. Growing up, I walked with my parents to our neighborhood gift store once a week where they let me choose one square of stickers. This square was cut from the many rolls hanging on the wall, packaged in a glassine bag and carefully carried home to join my collection in The Sticker Book. I lived for it.
I left my career in design and brand management to have kids - 4! - and, as a mom I let myself indulge in (and spend a lot of $$ on) stickers "for my kids." This soft spot for cool stickers + my need to find reliable and creative distractions for my crew led to the creation of Pipsticks.
We search far and wide to make sure that you've always got a sweet and totally cool stash of stickers. Pipsticks has given me the chance to be able to connect and collaborate with thousands of amazing sticker lovers all over the world - it turns out that it’s not just crazy me who’s been dreaming of stickers since the ’80s! These Sticker Club members have proven to me that indeed, a little sticker love goes a long way.

Are you taking time out of each and every day to do something that fills up your cup? Today I was joined by Shanna Noel, the woman who pioneered the bible journaling movement and founder of Illustrated Faith. We dive into bible journaling and the collections she created with brands like Studio Calico, Bella BLVD and DaySpring. She shares her advice for what you can do as a creative when you’re feeling uninspired. We also chat about allowing yourself the time and space to refuel your creative process and making time for what brings you joy.
What’s in this episode:
About Shanna:
My name is Shanna Noel and I live in Sonoma County, California with my husband Jonathan and our two beautiful daughters. We traveled all over the country before settling back home and I have never been happier to be surrounded by family!
I have always had a passion for capturing the little details I want to remember 10 years from now. When I discovered paper scrapbooking through Studio Calico in the summer of 2012 I fell in love with the whole process but it wasn’t until I started using my journaling bible that I really felt the meaning behind what I was creating. I was extremely nervous to share my new form of worship as I wasn’t sure how people would react to it. Looking back, I am so glad that I listened to the whisper that God put on my heart to share with you all, because from the moment I shared that first post on my blog (in early 2014) it has been a wildfire that just keeps growing. By sharing that I was documenting my faith right there in my bible, it turned the light bulb on for so many women… “YES!!! it’s okay to use the gifts God has given you to glorify HIM!”.

One of the greatest joys in life comes with learning to listen to that inner voice inside your head that is urging you to make a move. That’s exactly what today’s guest, Ali Bonar did when she launched her business, Kween. Ali shares how she’s learned to craft a life that she loves by shutting out the noise. We discuss her struggles with a disordered relationship with food, her journey to self-love and how she came up with the idea for creating granola butter. She shares what it’s like running a business with her boyfriend and using food, a former trigger for her, as the creative element for her business.
What’s in this episode:
About Ali:
Hailing from the rough streets of San Diego, Ali Bonar inevitably developed an addiction - to food. In fact, she's been eating 3x/day for as long as she can remember. Her deep-rooted passion for nutrition inspired her to study Nutritional Sciences at UC Berkeley and eventually launch @avokween, where she dove crown-first into the Kween lifestyle. Ali wholeheartedly believes that overall wellbeing is often achieved off-the-plate: nutrition is important, but human connection (and pizza with friends at 2 a.m.) are essential. Avocado is her drug of choice and people who "forget to eat" are the reason she has trust issues.

You have the power to create the world you want to live in, both on social media and in person. We also chat about examining the icky feeling we can sometimes feel while scrolling through our social media feeds and creating the social media world we desire.
What’s in this episode:
About Kristina:
After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design, Kristina Werner started her graphic design career at papercrafting company Stampin’ Up! She initially designed their catalog. It was during this time that she discovered the wonderful and creative outlet of stamping, scrapbooking and cardmaking. In today’s world, so many people crave having real connections. With so much taking place online, and more and more people eating dinner in front of their favorite Netflix show, it comes as no surprise that people are feeling isolated and lonely. On today’s episode, I am joined by Kara Elise, a chef, experience curator and hostess who helps clients by hosting dinner parties that create connection and community. She shares how she developed this idea for creating a dinner party company and why she’s always followed her heart. She discusses the power of words and speaking things into existence and the importance of taking time to pause, reflect and write things down. We also chat about how the Enneagram can help you to understand yourself and others.
What’s in this episode:
About Kara:
Kara Elise is a chef, experience curator, and the ultimate hostess. She focuses on creating spaces and experiences that cultivate community. Kara's expertise in hosting, recipe creation, and food styling establish a culture of invitation through holistically designed, welcoming environments. She is intuitive, warm, and disarming. A genuine hostess encouraging us to live fully.
In a culture obsessed with technology, being busy, and overstimulation, slowness is one of our most difficult disciplines. Kara believes that creating intentional time to sit with others is an essential practice. A moment to feed our bodies and fill our deepest human desire - to be seen and known.
While fostering relationships in Los Angeles, Kara has garnered a network of influential guests, clients, and brand partners. Her dinner party movement has successfully traveled between the West Coast and London and continues to grow internationally - drawing in socially savvy, mindful foodies along the way for dinners, retreats, and events. Kara also collaborates with a variety of brands, turning their consumers into a community of thriving relationships.
Kara recently launched her YouTube channel empowering freedom in the kitchen and teaching how to eat both mindfully and beautifully. Her first cookbook, Toast, was released in September 2017.

What do you say to a friend or family member that is hurting? Whether it be from illness, grief, miscarriage, infertility or any of the other ups and downs we can come across in life, there are moments when we just don’t quite have the words to say to comfort our loved ones. Today I am speaking with Emily McDowell, a writer, illustrator, speaker and teacher who after overcoming cancer and losing a friend to cancer a short time later, decided to bring a product to market that would help both the person on the giving and receiving end. Emily created stationery products that would help express what people are feeling but don’t know how to put into words. We talk about her business and why she merged with another company. She also shares what she does when she is in a creative rut and why she takes the time to focus on self-care.
What’s in this episode:
About Emily:
Emily McDowell is a writer, illustrator, speaker, teacher, and entrepreneur who is fiercely committed to not doing all of those things at the same time. After spending a decade working in advertising, she founded Emily McDowell Studio in January 2013. In January of 2019, Emily McDowell Studio officially changed names to Emily McDowell & Friends to reflect their expansion into partnerships with other artists and writers.
Emily’s work has been featured by The New York Times, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, BBC News, and NPR's All Things Considered, among many others, and in 2015, she was named one of Slate's 10 Designers Who Are Changing the World. Her first book, There Is No Good Card For This: What To Say and Do When Life Gets Scary, Awful, and Unfair To People You Love, co-authored with Dr. Kelsey Crowe, was released on January 2017.
Emily currently serves as an equity partner and SVP of strategy at the Who’s There Group, while remaining creative director/founder of Emily McDowell & Friends. She lives in Los Angeles with her family and various half-dead plants.

On today’s episode, I am joined by Lauren Hom, a designer and letterer based in Detroit. Lauren shares how she overcame her fears and put herself out there, what she’s done to grow her portfolio as a designer and letterer and the importance of doing something you love to fill your creative tank. She talks about the drawbacks of being a freelancer and how most people romanticize what they don’t have. We also discuss how she knew it was time to start building a team and learning to protect her time.

I’m a designer and letterer based in Detroit, schooled in New York, and raised in Los Angeles. If you feel like your life is weighed down by stress, then you will want to hear this episode.
Today on the podcast, I am joined by Stephanie Smokovich, the founder of Bella BLVD, a scrapbooking company specializing in beautifully designed patterned papers and stickers.
In January 2018, Stephanie was confronted with a brain cancer diagnosis. From this diagnosis, she was faced with the difficult task of reducing stress and work in her life. It was then that she made the difficult decision to let go of the business side of Bella BLVD to focus on the art and design portion she initially fell in love with. Stephanie partnered her business with Doodlebug and continues to work as the Creative Director.
We discuss how her brain tumor changed her mindset and perspective on life, how she fills her life with color, and how she came up with the idea for her event, She Loves Color. We also chat about transitioning to working less, how to reduce stress in your life and the mantra that Stephanie lives by.
What’s in this episode:
From Stephanie:
The truth about me is that I have loved scrapbooking since the very first day I walked into a local store; I met the owner, and was hired the same day! Attending fine arts classes during the day, and teaching scrapbooking workshops at night became part of my daily college routine. After earning an expensive Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design I moved out of state to follow my love for art and design. After two years I returned home to Wisconsin with bigger dreams: Shortly thereafter, Bella Blvd was born (2008).
Fast forward to January of 2018: Life certainly changed for me when the doctors informed me that I have brain cancer-needless to say, it put a whole lot of things into perspective. The doctors recommend working much less and reducing stress in my life. While Bella Blvd brings me so much joy, it also comes with it's fair amount of stress. Therefore, I made a tough decision to choose life and to let go of all the business side of Bella Blvd. As of January 2019 Doodlebug will be maintaining all of the company's day-to-day operations. I will continue to be involved on the art and design levels and am so thankful to have found Cynthea and her team to partner with!
After attending the Inspired Retreat in Nashville in May of 2016, the She Loves Color Event was born. The mission is to inspire, connect and customize. We aim with the event to support each other and allow color to energize us. We've designed the event to allow women to do what they love, meet new friends and offer a manufacture focused event. As the owner of Bella Blvd it's important to me the we not only recognize the Educators, but also the companies that are behind the faces.

Are you doing everything that you can to fill your buckets? One of the keys to a life well-lived is to make sure you’re focusing your energy on doing activities and spending time with people that fill you up.
Today on the podcast, I am honored to be joined by Jonathan Fields, a national bestselling author and the founder of Good Life Project. Jonathan is the chief architect behind the world’s first “purpose archetypes”, Sparketypes™. One topic that is often avoided in the creative community is navigating through those tough, creative dry spells. I’m talking about those days where you wake up and it just seems as if your passion and inspiration are mysteriously gone.
Those days where you feel like you’re in a rut, where you feel unengaged, uninspired and lack the motivation you need to create. It’s a hard place to be in when you want so badly to make something but you feel that you’re stuck or you think you have no ideas left.
Today I will share how I like to think of creativity, how to address the hard times and the importance of giving yourself grace through creative dry spells. I also give an acronym for the word “ALIVE” that will lead you back on track and rekindle your love for creating.

Happiness is about choosing to do the things in your day that create joy and excitement. Even if you can only carve out 10 to 15 minutes, it’s still important to do the things that you love that make you feel fulfilled.

Paige is a scrapbooker who has seven signature collections with Pink Paislee, almost a thousand cut files with Silhouette, two design teams and has taught papercrafting classes in 10 countries. What I enjoyed most about my conversation with Paige is how she not only shared the bright happy stuff but she also shared the times where she navigated through the tough moments and how she’s started making healthier choices for life. We discuss how we met each other and did live events together, her experience of teaching scrapbooking in other countries, and her favorite techniques for scrapbooking. She also shares her advice for days when you’re feeling uncreative and where to turn to for inspiration.

No matter your age, it is never too late to start something new that is on your heart or that you’ve been dreaming about. That is one piece of wisdom that today’s guest, Elise Blaha Cripe and I discuss from her book, 100 Pep Talks.
I am so excited to have Elise on the show today. Elise has been sharing thoughts and DIY projects online since 2005. She has been running an online shop of handmade goods since 2008 and in the past few years, she has launched GET TO WORK BOOK® and self-published a book, 100 Pep Talks. Her new book, Big Dreams and Daily Joys will be releasing this October. We discuss her favorite part of being a scrapbooker, ignoring the voices in your head that tell you that you can’t do something and dealing with critical people.
What’s in this episode:
About Elise:
I'm Elise and I make stuff. That's who I am and that's my job.
I started a blog in 2005 because I wanted to share my thoughts with the Internet. A year later, I began sharing craft projects and tutorials. In 2008, I opened my first online shop and since then, I have made and sold everything from letterpress prints to wooden plant stands.
Over the years, I have learned that while I'll always make stuff, my true passion is in helping people set and work towards their goals. In 2015, I launched the brand GET TO WORK BOOK® which provides tools to help you get your goals organized and do the work to reach them. I believe that big things happen one day at a time and my products are designed to schedule out those days. You can learn more about GET TO WORK BOOK® and shop the line here.
I live in San Diego, California with my husband, Paul, and our two young daughters, Ellerie and Piper. In fall 2017, I launched a self-paced eCourse about creating with your kiddos. You can learn more about that here.

Don’t you remember those incredible summers when you were growing up? Ones that were full of freedom and enjoyment? On today’s solo episode, I am talking about taking the time to savor the most sun and fun of this season. Just because we’re all grown up doesn’t mean our sense of wonder has to end.
I share why you should lean into fear and learn to embrace yourself for all of your unique quirks. When you allow your unique self to rise to the surface, you will feel more stimulated and alive. Honoring this and loving yourself for it will fuel that little glimmer inside of your soul that allows you to create, design and live your life to its fullest. I also chat about why you should savor the season, set intentions for yourself and the importance of indulging in your adventurous side.

If you’re feeling stuck in your 9 to 5 or you keep toying with the idea of turning your side hustle a full-time gig then this is the episode is for you.
What does it feel like to break through the conventional path set out for you and chase after a dream? It’s very different for everyone but many people experience a certain amount of fear. After all, it isn’t easy to embrace those big unknowns in the beginning. Today I am joined by my friend, Heidi Stevens, an entrepreneur who built a 7-figure real estate business but couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. Heidi transitioned to being a soulful business coach and hasn’t looked back since. We discuss what it was like for her to transition into this new role, how she realized it was time to step out of the real estate business and the importance of setting intentions for your life.
What’s in this episode:
About Heidi:
Heidi Stevens is a soulful business coach for service-based creative entrepreneurs.
In her one-on-one work with clients and through her transformative Thrive program, Heidi supports women in getting clear on their strategy, up-leveling their mindset, and tuning into their spirituality.
Over the past decade, Heidi built one of the most successful real estate firms in Los Angeles, alongside Kenny, her partner in business and in life. The two grew the firm to a multiple 7-figure business, and Heidi built and trained a team of more than fifteen people. Despite her professional success, her life felt divided. During the week, Heidi was managing her team and closing deals. Then, on the weekends, she’d step into the spiritual side of herself — attending personal development workshops, working with coaches and healers, and getting her Masters in Spiritual Psychology.
Heidi noticed that the more she leaned into meditation, mindset work, and manifestation exercises, the more successful her business became. She realized business strategy and spirituality were closely aligned and one could inform the other. Heidi wanted to help other women discover this connection and use it to strengthen and grow their businesses and create more easeful, prosperous lives.
Over the past two years, Heidi has mentored more than a hundred women through phases of concentrated growth — both through her private client work and her group program, Thrive. She has helped them find more outward success, inner harmony, and overall growth.

As a recovering workaholic, I can totally relate to those out there who find themselves pouring into their work. However, I can’t quite blame myself because I truly love what I do. On this solo episode, I am sharing a heartfelt email that I received from a fellow blogger, Christine. Christine shares how inspired she felt after watching one of my YouTube videos and how being burnt out from her work has led her astray from her hobbies and passions.
These are the types of messages that really make me that much more passionate about what I do. I only hope that I am bringing a positive impact on the world. It goes to show that you have to give what you feel the world needs as you have no idea who it will inspire. I hope today’s message will leave you feeling uplifted and energized. The more we spread creativity and happiness that comes from pursuing our passions, the better off our amazing community will be.

When you are going through your day to day life, be sure to remember to tap into the beauty of the little moments. Often times, it’s easy to forget that rainbows only come after a storm. That is exactly what we are going to be chatting about with today’s guest, Stacy Julian.
Stacy is a friend of mine whom I met several years back after reaching out to her to meet in person at CHA. Then I was able to be a part of her event, 12.12.12 with Big Picture Classes, in Maui. Spending time with Stacy always brightens my day because I love that she is so open to sharing not only the shiny, happy moments but also to sharing the ones where she grew from struggles and challenges. On this episode, she shares how she got into scrapbooking and pioneered the Library of Memories. We also chat about letting go of what no longer serves you and the power that comes from women collaborating with other women.

We live in a culture that often doesn’t allow for sadness. It’s so important that you learn to fully embrace all of your emotions, even the difficult ones such as guilt or sadness as it can be the fuel that you need to craft a life you love.
Today I am joined by Randy Taran, Founder and CEO of Project Happiness, an organization dedicated to reaching at least 10 million people with their message of kindness, happiness and empathy. Randy’s entire business and career are centered around one of the most vital ingredients for a fulfilling life: happiness. Randy and I chat about embracing emotions, how it can help your creativity and learning to honor and move past negative emotions. We also discuss her new book, Emotional Advantage and her favorite part about writing it.
What’s in this episode:
About Randy:
Randy is the founder and CEO of Project Happiness. When her own child was suffering from stress and depression, this ignited a passion to share the best resources to help others facing similar challenges. She is the co-author of the Project Happiness Handbook, bringing the best of positive psychology, neuroscience and mindfulness to youth. This book has become the backbone for our leading social and emotional learning curriculum, serving students, teachers, counselors and coaches in every state and over 120 countries.
Randy produced the award-winning documentary “Project Happiness” which brought together young people from three continents to ask one question – “What is the nature of lasting happiness?” They interviewed George Lucas, Richard Gere, neuroscientist Richard Davidson and ultimately, in Dharamsala, India, had an unforgettable private audience with the Dalai Lama.
Through Project Happiness, Randy’s dream of empowering people with the resources to create greater happiness within themselves and the world is coming to life. With a following of over 2.5 million people on social media alone, messages of hope and science-based strategies for greater well-being are reaching people when they need it most. In these stressful times, enhancing and tapping into our inner resources is more important than ever.
Randy, who is thrilled to be doing this work, speaks regularly on well-being and living your best life, areas she covers on her regular blogs in the Huffington Post, and in weekly videos on Facebook Live. She lives near Palo Alto, California with her family and well-loved dogs. Randy is a Yoga Alliance certified teacher who holds her MBA in International Business and Marketing from New York University. She knows deeply that greater happiness is possible and everything you need is inside of you.

In this life, you have to give yourself permission to take action and go for what you want. You have something valuable that the world needs. You can do so much by simply opening your heart, being messy and beginning.
On today’s episode, I am joined by a friend of mine and fellow podcaster, Cathy Heller. We chat about failing forward and the importance of taking action. She shares how she got to this point in her career, the failures that she has faced along the way and how she overcomes limiting beliefs. We discuss giving yourself permission to share your gift and how to look at failures as opportunities.
What’s in this episode:
About Cathy:
Cathy Heller is a fire hose of inspiration. She’s the host of the popular podcast Don’t Keep Your Day Job, which was given the #1 spot on iTunes recommend list of shows for the New Year in 2018 and 2019.
Each week Cathy encourages thousands and thousands of listeners to find more purpose in their life and get paid to do what they love full time. She started out as a singer songwriter and first found success licensing her music to TV, Film and Ads. Quickly she became a stand out in her field and was featured in magazines like Billboard, Variety and the LA Weekly.
After making a multi six figure living with her music, Cathy started a music agency and then she began teaching other artists to grow their own careers.
Two weeks after her third daughter was born, she started her top ranked podcast. Cathy’s show has been featured in Forbes, HuffPost, the NY Times and Inc Magazine’s “top 9 podcasts”, and has over 6 million downloads. She’s been featured several times by Apple themselves and the fans are resonating with how genuine she is.
Throughout the show, she has interviewed creative entrepreneurs like actress Jenna Fischer, popular blogger Seth Godin, designer Jonathan Adler, make up artist Bobbi Brown, dancer Mandy Moore, fashionista Tamara Mellon, novelist Emily Giffin, and Gretchen Rubin to name a few.
When she’s not teaching or interviewing amazing guests for her podcast, you can find Cathy playing with her three little girls, writing her book, songwriting for tv shows and commercials, or enjoying a moment with friends.
Cathy often says “purpose is the opposite of depression” and she is truly lifting others to be the happiest version of themselves.
