If you asked her at the beginning of her career if she thought she’d be where she is today, deep down, I think she knew. Although you can’t discount that.

She’s worked hard, gained experience and put her detail-oriented, process-centric style of work to building a scalable company.

Jim’s a creative guy. He directs, consults, speaks and teaches on creativity.

He can’t get enough it.

That’s why I wanted him on the show.

I wanted to talk about how agencies can be more creative and how they can nurture it. We did that. And we also had a chance to discuss how you can take time out (or step away during a crisis) to work on your creativity.

Have a listen as we sit down with Jim Harrison from MetaVisual design studio.

What do you do in the good times? Are you prepped, ready to go and able to make it through a downturn? If not, you’re in for a rude awakening.

But depending on how long you’ve been in business, you want to look to the companies that have made it through the ups and downs.

You want to know what to look at in your clients and your niche to gauge your decisions. You want to know when and where to pivot.

Brad’s a numbers guy. He’s also a process guy. When you mix the two, the output is a powerhouse company designed to help digital agencies propel their growth.

It’s called Accountfully. This is where he and his team manage clients’ books and act as a CFO, helping with financial decisions of shapes and sizes.

And he’s also a quick study. In a matter of days, many were calling him a PPL and EIDL expert.

In any event, he was kind enough to come on the podcast and tell us what we can do right now in this crisis as well as what we can do to future proof our agencies.

I love changing my mind. It means someone produced a piece of data or such a compelling argument that I’ve taken a new position. In other words, I learned something new.

Before this interview, I was pretty deadset in my opinion on working remotely. I believed something was lost when humans are not in the same building.

I know. It’s old school. And times are changing.

But that’s why my guest was the perfect person to chat with about a distributed workforce.

Jason’s agency is born and bred out of a distributed environment almost ten years ago. He has employees all over the world. And no, he’s not from the future. I asked him. He’s just ahead of the curve, where he’s embraced this evolving structure from a logical perspective.

You see, it’s not about cost or saving money. That’s the wrong way to look at it. It’s about your ability to deliver more to your clients.

To Jason, this model has created a sum greater than it’s parts. His agency is profitable and productive. And it’s attracted stronger talent, developing a more diverse, experienced workforce.

So you have to ask yourself:

  • Do you want more diversity?
  • Do you want stronger talent?
  • Do you want a more productive workforce that works from home?

Who the hell wouldn’t? This episode is for you, especially now that most of the world is forced to work from home.

Listen to our chat with Jason, where we talk about how to create and manage a distributed digital agency, profit sharing, onboarding team members, Pearl Jam and a whole hell of a lot more.

Check out this episode, leave some feedback and please subscribe.

Michael Gass. He’s been doing this for a bit.

We wanted to talk about Coronavirus, specifically how agencies should communicate and how they should position themselves.

First off, what I have to say is he’s a professional. He’s got family directly affected by the crisis. But he still came on the show.

And his advice during the crisis— don’t sell or prospect. Prepare for new business. Help others and add value. Support them in any way you can. Sure this goes without saying, but it’s worth saying again. He also offered some dos and don’ts for social media during this storm.

What else should agencies do? Take the time to figure out your positioning. Michael believes this is the foundation for new business. We also took a deeper dive into Michael’s approach. He lays out how to do it. And he should know. He’s held over 450 workshops working with agencies on how to do this.

He also gives me some advice on content creation that’ll more than likely help you. Granted, these are things I’ve heard before, but when it comes from Michael, it resonates.

Join us for episode 13 where we chat with one of my favorite Alabamians about what your agency can do in the crisis with your social media and positioning.

Navigating a crisis is tough in any industry. But when you’re a marketing agency, it can be even tougher.

For instance, how many months of capital do you have on hand? Hopefully more than 1-3 months. According to our guest Nick, that’s the average. And based on what he’s saying, you need 6 months or more.

He’s a researcher and a strategist with a financial background who happens to work with agencies.

I thought he would be a good guest to speak to about the Coronavirus pandemic and he didn’t disappoint.

So what are your plans? Are we as whole calculating the longterm economic impact? Are you still in shock waiting to take action?

Have a listen as we talk through a lot of things you may be thinking about right now.

Charlie’s authentic. No one can argue this.

He’s always hustling. He’s a hustler. But not in the conman type of way. Rather, in the “lots of action” kind of way. Although he thinks it can be a problem. I’d argue this.

But then again, maybe I think too much. ;)

Over the last 14 years, he’s honed the actions that built his agency, into a strategic powerhouse with 40+ people.

In fact, some could argue he owns the digital health care marketing niche.

He’s accomplished this by delivering work so good for his clients, they brag about him. These are the best type of referrals.

And now he’s clear on his differentiator. Here’s his value proposition: “Where strategy, content, and execution are ‘chromosomically’ linked”

Hell, I couldn’t pronounce that C-word, but who am I?

And if you asked Charlie how to find your differentiator, you’d probably get an answer that sounds something like this “If you don’t know it, find it. Stop pretending and manufacturing. Act like a big agency and ask the people you’re doing the work for.”

You gotta love an answer like that.

He’s pretty clear on his opinions. I like that in person. No sugar coating. Real unbridled authenticity. It’s refreshing. I think you’ll like it too.

Join us where we talk about working your niche, selling wider and deeper into companies, retargeting, PonyCycles, culture, prison, punching, outcome-based marketing, value-based pricing, keeping and fostering talent and way more.

Geoff is a through and through entrepreneur.

He started his first business in high school. He started his agency when in college. And he’s owned multiple businesses since then, including some ice cream shops. He’s still starting businesses. He won’t stop.

Why would he?

He’s not a set it and forget it guy. He’s an innovator. Hence why his agency was one of the first to convert to agile only development.

He’s always looking for a competitive advantage and differentiator. Now his agency is on the bleeding edge of design thinking, working alongside Google.

This is the company Geoff’s built. An innovation company. They’re always pushing. But it’s not just him in a lab concocting ideas. He’s built the team around him that demands this level of innovation.

And he’s truly embraced eliminating his own job by surrounding himself with strong leadership. Thankfully, this created a little bit of time in his busy schedule where he could sit back a bit and chat with us.

Join us for episode 10 where we talk with Geoff Wilson about leveraging resources, outbound marketing strategies, managing growth, leadership, peddling sports cards and more.

What’s your purpose? Does it align with your agency’s purpose?

Here's another thing to consider, are you trying to make your agency something it’s not?

These are questions Jeb Banner kept asking himself. He was the CEO of his agency, kept hitting walls and got burned out. Although while he was still running it, he spent the last 5 years trying to find a product, trying to find something with recurring revenue.

From this, he discovered what happens when DNA clashes. His agency wanted to be an agency. He wanted to build a product and be a product company. Round peg, square hole. You’ve seen it before, but it’s hard to notice when it’s you— the cause of the issue.

Jeb noticed and did something about it. After multiple attempts at building a product, he finally spun one out —Boardable, a board management platform that helps nonprofit communicate.

Join us for episode 9 where chat about why musicians are better employees, core values, how to develop a product for your agency, what it takes to be a healthy CEO and way more.

Kerry’s agency was a lifestyle business. She had no idea. But when she discovered this, she wanted a growth business.

She maximized the value of her agency beyond the revenue and profit margin. She focused on differentiation, processes and specialization — working with B2B tech firms.

She also stopped thinking of her employees as family and started thinking of them as team members.

Something must have worked. Because along the way, she was approached 7 times before finally selling.

Now she runs the global office for North America for Publitek. She’s happier than ever.

Join us for episode eight where we chat about her climb, leadership, acquisition targets, communicating expectations, and more.

Sometimes you meet couples that compliment each other in every way. Sometimes they marry. And sometimes they decide to run a business together.

This kind of teamwork isn’t ordinary. And I mean real teamwork. And when it starts at the top and trickles through your business down to the newest employees, you have a solid culture. And when you have a solid culture, anything is achievable.

I had the honor to interview Nikole & Mike Rose, the two people I’m attempting to describe here. The company they’ve built embodies the inbound marketing agency many ascribe to have. They’re a HubSpot Diamond Partner. They embrace Open Book Management (OBM). They follow the EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System). To many others, these are just popular buzzwords, and in many cases, expensive distractions.

To Nikole & Mike, these aren’t just fads. These are systems and methods they worked hard to implement and are now reaping rewards. But they would be too humble to credit themselves for this, and rightfully so. They would credit the culture and their team.

(And as quick aside, here’s an example of Mike’s humility. When I asked if he wanted to promote anything, he took that time to promote our next Digital Mastermind Summit, which takes place in December. What a guy!)

So if you want to grow your agency, are thinking about acquiring other companies, have questions on culture, then this show is for you.

Join us for episode seven where we talked about everything from acquisitions to TopGun, the definition of “likeability,’ how to avoid culture clashes and more.

Mentors are important. To Shannon, it’s important to have one and to be one.

Don’t get me wrong, Shannon’s not a preacher. She’s more than that. Shes’ a teacher, a role model.

She’s built a successful, growing marketing agency with a team of women that she empowers by telling her story and being transparent about her life. (And before you ask, it’s not that she won’t hire a man, this is just the way it’s worked out so far.)

But Shannon’s the real deal. She lives “women empowerment” and wants others to understand “you can have it if you want it.” And she believes people can get in their own way. They create the self-limiting beliefs that disempower themselves.

Sound simple enough fix? It’s not. We know that.

So join us for episode 6 where we discuss women empowerment, role models, kid guilt, custom marketing approaches, psychedelics and a bunch of marketing tips and strategies along the way.

Gabe’s got “it” together. He’s one of those guys. He just gets it. And when he doesn’t, he’ll take the time to figure it out, then build an army to do it his way.

Keep in mind, “his way” is serious. Because to Gabe, marketing is important. Just as important as law or medicine.

But his way works.

Want proof? He started an agency in a dorm room and grew it to 250 people.

And during that time he won big accounts; he worked with major brands like Microsoft, IBM, P&G and the NFL.

Then he sold it. Now he’s doing it again. He’s building another agency—from scratch.

In this episode, we get down and dirty, discussing the nitty, gritty details with Gabe on how he did it, why he doesn’t have a ping pong table in his office and what to do if you want to win marquee brands yourself.

Lee’s talented. He’s written 64 plays. He’s been a professor at USC. He’s built an agency that grew during the recession.

But it’s more than talent. He works hard. Really hard.

And why wouldn’t he? He believes work provides purpose.

He’s a caring guy that speaks from the heart. And in fact, that’s one of the founding elements in his agency - from the sales process through the execution of the work - “it’s heart to heart” as Lee would say.

Although he didn’t do all this alone. He has a brilliant business partner. He’s fostered a team through an intentionally collaborative environment. But what you can’t limit or undervalue is that he was smart enough to surround himself with people that help him succeed.

In our latest episode of The Climb, we learn how Lee merged his passion with his work life, how he fosters a creative atmosphere and why DeLorean’s were a poor choice for toll roads.

What good have you done lately? This is a question Cameron Madill thinks about a lot.

With that thought, he’s built an agency that oozes with corporate good. But this wasn’t at a cost. Not in the longterm anyway. In fact, since then, he’s doubled his business.

Is this what you get when you take a kid from Portland, send him to Stanford to get a degree in physics and have him start an agency with his dad?

Nah. It’s more complex than that. Cameron Madill’s a deep thinker. A learner according to one personality test. And an all-around good guy who has genuine give a damn written all over him.

It’s paid off. And my bet is it will continue to pay dividends for his people, his pocket and our planet for a long time.

In our second episode of The Climb, we take a deep dive into what it means to become a Certified B Corp, falling into a business vertical and aligning values with work.

What if you didn’t plan with a vision mind? What if you just took your business step by step, quarter by quarter?

It’s contrary to what you hear a lot these days. The strategy is different. Instead of looking so far ahead, you simply focus on your next move and make sure you get it done.

This is what David McGraw has done.

Over the last 10 years, he's been able to take Oyova (www.oyova.com) from a one-person shop to over 25 employees and growing.

In this very first episode of The Climb, we talk about how he got into this, culture setters, and some of the biggest mistakes marketing agencies are making today.
