In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god. 3 Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family[a] and of the nobility, 4 youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to stand in the king’s palace, and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans. 5 The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate, and of the wine that he drank. They were to be educated for three years, and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king. 6 Among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah. 7 And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: Daniel he called Belteshazzar, Hananiah he called Shadrach, Mishael he called Meshach, and Azariah he called Abednego.

21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.” - Matthew 16:21-23 ESV
But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,[a] and he was angry. 2 And he prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster. 3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said, “Do you do well to be angry?”

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.” 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city,[a] three days’ journey in breadth.[b] 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5 And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
6 The word reached[c] the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8 but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. 9 Who knows? God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way, God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and you heard my voice.
3 For you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
passed over me.
4 Then I said, ‘I am driven away
from your sight;
yet I shall again look
upon your holy temple.’
5 The waters closed in over me to take my life;
the deep surrounded me;
weeds were wrapped about my head
6 at the roots of the mountains.
I went down to the land
whose bars closed upon me forever;
yet you brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord my God.
7 When my life was fainting away,
I remembered the Lord,
and my prayer came to you,
into your holy temple.
8 Those who pay regard to vain idols
forsake their hope of steadfast love.
9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving
will sacrifice to you;
what I have vowed I will pay.
Salvation belongs to the Lord!”

1 The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.”
3 But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
4 But the Lord hurled a powerful wind over the sea, causing a violent storm that threatened to break the ship apart. 5 Fearing for their lives, the desperate sailors shouted to their gods for help and threw the cargo overboard to lighten the ship.
But all this time Jonah was sound asleep down in the hold. 6 So the captain went down after him. “How can you sleep at a time like this?” he shouted. “Get up and pray to your god! Maybe he will pay attention to us and spare our lives.”
7 Then the crew cast lots to see which of them had offended the gods and caused the terrible storm. When they did this, the lots identified Jonah as the culprit. 8 “Why has this awful storm come down on us?” they demanded. “Who are you? What is your line of work? What country are you from? What is your nationality?”
9 Jonah answered, “I am a Hebrew, and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”
10 The sailors were terrified when they heard this, for he had already told them he was running away from the Lord. “Oh, why did you do it?” they groaned. 11 And since the storm was getting worse all the time, they asked him, “What should we do to you to stop this storm?”
12 “Throw me into the sea,” Jonah said, “and it will become calm again. I know that this terrible storm is all my fault.”
13 Instead, the sailors rowed even harder to get the ship to the land. But the stormy sea was too violent for them, and they couldn’t make it. 14 Then they cried out to the Lord, Jonah’s God. “O Lord,” they pleaded, “don’t make us die for this man’s sin. And don’t hold us responsible for his death. O Lord, you have sent this storm upon him for your own good reasons.”
15 Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! 16 The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered him a sacrifice and vowed to serve him.
17 [a]Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights. -Jonah 1:1-17
7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.
23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.[g] 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.[h] 25 And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant[i] fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii,[j] and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. 32 Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers,[k] until he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,[b] she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”
8 Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!” -Mark 2:1-12
Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
2 For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.
3 Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.[b]
4 Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.
7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,

Our souls are more restless, anxious and agitated than ever before.
We are lost and lonely.
Come home to the Father.
It shows our kids they can, too.
Repent and turn to Jesus.
Then, leave the light on for others to follow and be welcomed home, too.
The future of our kids and the kingdom depends on it.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, 46 who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
I want you to know, brothers,[e] that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard[f] and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word[g] without fear.

For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?[c] And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.[a] 2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. 3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. 4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” 5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. 6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” 7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. 8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. 9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
12 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written,
15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion;
behold, your king is coming,
sitting on a donkey’s colt!”
16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock[a] I will build my church, and the gates of hell[b] shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed[c] in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant.[b] He is a faithful minister of Christ on your[c] behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks[d] to the Father, who has qualified you[e] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

3 For our appeal does not spring from error or impurity or any attempt to deceive, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5 For we never came with words of flattery,[a] as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. 6 Nor did we seek glory from people, whether from you or from others, though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ. 7 But we were gentle[b] among you, like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. 8 So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience. 12 We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart. 13 For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are in our right mind, it is for you. 14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[b] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Hello friends! We are at the start of a new story and a new series going through the letter of 1 John! We believe that 1 John was written by John the disciple, the brother of James, the sons of Zebedee. It was likely written sometime towards the end of the first century, sometime around 85-90 AD. John was likely written to the church and communities surrounding Ephesus, written to encourage the believers there to stand firm under persecution, temptation of sin and false teaching and teachers that were plaguing the community. 1 John is a “simple” letter, meaning that John spoke in simple, practical terms to his people, the “little children” who needed guidance and reassurance of their faith. It’s a fascinating letter filled with lots of practical and timely encouragement for us as a church today! Alright, let’s jump in and make a start of it!

Here are some questions to think through this week:
1.) Have you ever had a “mountain top/valley” experience with God and/or in life in general? If you are willing to share about it with your group, please do! What did you learn from it?
2.) Why is it so hard to see/hear from God when we are in the valley vs the mountain? Do you think God is near or far from you while in the valley? Or is it that we have drawn away from Him?
3.) Do you believe God cares about your valley moments/failures in life? Do you believe that despite our failures to see/hear from Him or learn from our mistakes/hardships, God wants to restore us back to Him? Why?
4.) Where are you in life now? Are you hearing/seeing God clearly or do you feel like He isn’t there? What do you need help/support with and how can we do that for you?

And he said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.” Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They said to him, “We are able.” He said to them, “You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.” And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The parable of the sower tells us that the condition of the soil of our hearts is often affected by the season of life we are in.
“On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.”

In chapters 5 & 6 Paul gives examples of how we do this in the context of:
Marriage, Family and Authority
Marriage: Husband and wife submitting, or deferring, to one another
while fully submitting to God
Family: Children learn to obey God by obeying their parents
Authority: You are either OVER someone in authority, or UNDER someone else’s authority.
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”

“Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. But that is not the way you learned Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

But God, being rich in mercy made us ALIVE, FREE, and children of GRACE.
It’s a free gift that we did absolutely nothing to earn or deserve.

God longs to bring those who are far away from him close to him, and make them part of his family. To make them our brothers and sisters.
Put away anything that hinders, divides, or places barriers in the way of them receiving the same free gift you received.

1.) “Power” ,(which is the same word used in Acts 1: 8 for power), is where we get our word for dynamite. It referes to capability or potential, as in the endless capability and limitless potential of the power of God. The Holy Spirit’s power and life in our lives is capable of limitless potential to overcome darkness and sin and love the world around us!
2.) “Working” refers to effective or operational power. This can mean that God’s power can and does work in and through our lives, broken or not, and through our circumstances, difficult or not. The Holy Spirit’s power and life will work effectively in and through our lives and circumstances, regardless of how difficult they may be!
3.) “Great” refers to power exercised in resistance and control. This means that God’s power and life is deliberate, purposeful, guiding, and precise. The power and life of the Holy Spirit inside us guides us, gives us specific purpose and direction, and can be used and acted through by us!
4.) “Might” refers to bodily or muscular strength or vital power. Living or life power. Which means that the living or life power of God, through the Holy Spirit, is what is living inside us, giving us life with we need strength to overcome hardship, giving us life when we feel empty or alone, giving us life to live with joy and purpose, and giving us life to share with others who need it!
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
We were called to be FREE
But, just because you’re called to freedom it doesn’t mean there’s no discipline or that ‘anything goes’
Paul says the entire law is fulfilled by loving your neighbor as yourself How do you show - How do you measure if someone truly loves God?
Mike’s Gospel puts it this way
Love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, strength and you PROVE it by loving your neighbor as yourself
Some thoughts to think through during this week:
1.) It is true of men and women that we all at times of our lives deal with shame, fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Why is that? What lingering shame do you struggle with and why?
2.) What does it mean to you that God had given you a Spirit of power, love, and self-control? Knowing that, how can you battle shame and trust that God approves of you and values you?
3.) If you were free of shame and fear, how would it affect your life, your family, your friends, your goals and dreams? How would it affect your relationship with God and your ability to love your neighbor?
Bonus thought: Maybe you don’t struggle with shame or fear… but you most assuredly know people who do. What or how can you help speak truth into their lives and therefore strengthen and honor them?
1.) How do you define love? Does it line up with God’s definition of love? When is a time that you have felt the love of God most deeply? How did you know it was the love of God that you were experiencing?
2.) Is loving people the way God loves people easy or difficult? Why? Is it possible to truly love people the way God does, even if they don’t love us back? How can we do this?
3.) What does love require of us, and you, this week? Who do you need to love this week and how can you do that?
Some questions to think on this week:
1.) What do you think it means to have “child-like faith? How can we be more courageous and bold in our lives, even when we may be facing difficulties or fear?
2.) How can we know God more deeply? How do you or how are you doing in your personal walk with God? Do you feel free to ask God questions that are weighing on your heart or is that a struggle for you? Do you believe God answers you or that He is listening?
3.) Children seem to forgive and move on a lot easier than adults… why do you think that is? Is there something about forgiveness that we can learn from them? Why is forgiveness sometimes difficult?
1.) What is your story? Can you or have you ever shared your God story: who you were before Jesus, how and why did you come to place your faith in Jesus, and what and how He is active and changing your life now? If you haven’t, maybe consider practicing it! Write it out and share your story with someone!
2.) Have you ever tried to “kick against the goads”, i.e. try to oppose or resist or deny God? What was that like? Did it work? How did it make you feel and impact your life? And how do you think God feels about you, if you did resist Him?
3.) What does it mean to you, that we are to be presenting ourselves as “living sacrifices”? And how can we be holy and acceptable to God? Does that depend on us? Does it matter how we live out our story to the world around us? Why?
1.) What are the idols in culture today that people worship? Why do people seek idols over God? What are the idols competing with God for the center of your heart? If we as Christ-followers know better than non-Christians, then why do we still struggle with this?
2.) Do we actually accomplish Romans 12: 2 and resist the current flow of culture and yet still be out in the culture and living the gospel outwardly and inwardly? How do we practically work on the renewal of our minds? Does it mean that we have to give up doing the things we love or stop working on improving ourselves or seeking financial stability?
3.) If someone today were to ask you to genuinely explain why you believe in Jesus, why you think He is real and alive and God, how would you do it? And if you are unsure about how to go about it, are you willing to put some effort into learning how to do it?
1.) Who are the women in your life that have impacted you the most? What did they do to influence you so greatly? And how has their lives changed yours and affected the way you live?
2.) What do you think it means that our identity is a “royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession”? Do you think of yourselves in those terms? What gets in the way of finding our identity in Jesus like this? What can we do to remember who we are in Christ and live more freely in who He calls us to be?
3.) God often calls us into unexpected places and to unusual circumstances and people. Where is God calling you to live out His gospel and who is He leading you to speak into for the cause of Christ? If those circumstances and people are far outside of our comfort zone, how then do we muster up the courage to follow Jesus in His call to live the gospel fully?
1.) How would you define persecution? Is it just people disagreeing with us or attacking us because of our faith or could persecution be on a larger scale, such as anytime you are going through something difficult that is causing your hardship with your faith and life? Why?
2.) Have you ever felt “persecuted” for your faith? What happened? How did you respond? Is it easy or difficult to go through persecution with rejoicing? How do we do that?
3.) How does the testing of our faith result in praise, honor, and glory? How does experiencing suffering, like Jesus, help the kingdom to grow? How can we as brothers and sisters in Christ, help each other as we go through hardship, so that the Kingdom will grow and our faith will become stronger?

1.) Who and what is the Church? What is the role and function of the Church? What part do you play in the Church?
2.) What and how do you think of the Holy Spirit? Is He a Helper and Counselor or Advocate for you? What do you need Him to help or counsel you through or advocate on your behalf?
3.) How is your relationship with God right now? Do you hear from Him clearly or is there something that is getting in the way of that and distracting you? What is God trying to say to you? And how can you act upon that this week?

Towards the very beginning of His early ministry, Jesus like most teachers sought out students (disciples) to teach and entrust His mission to. Now there is a whole slew of sermons wrapped up in how and who and why Jesus chose the very eclectic and peculiar group of people that He did. But none were more controversial than perhaps Matthew. Though Jesus had uneducated men, mere teenagers, women, and radical zealots trailing behind Him, the calling of Matthew as a tax collector is especially scandalous.
Jesus is asking for Agape Love. Total, complete, unconditional love - heart, soul, mind & strength.
Three times Peter denied Jesus And three times Peter was reinstated, redeemed by Jesus God is like SERVPRO - “Like it never even happened” Loving Jesus requires action - Feed my sheep
God is in the business of restoration “Like it never even happened” Peter’s story was far from over…
Jesus asks who the people say he is, but more importantly he asks each one of us - who do YOU say I am?
‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Matthew 16:18 (NLT) - I will build my church, and all the powers of hell will not conquer it.
Ecclesiastes 4:1 - Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed - and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors - and they have no comforter.

The very act of her of obedience immediately put her in a position that called for her death.

Joseph chose grace - even when that grace was EXTREMELY COSTLY to him
The wise men here highly educated pagans - they were outsiders to Israel
This was not their story - not their promise, but God invited them into it

Where is your treasure? Your heart will be with your treasure
Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed
Life does not consist in the abundance of possessions
Jesus is teaching that entrance to the kingdom of heaven is gained ONLY by the generous grace of God. It can’t be earned by wealth, nor position, nor anything we that do.
The first AND the last are all equal shareholders in an extravagant, eternal reward - we’re all joint-heirs with Jesus
And if those of us who claim to know God and to be about His business (those who started work early in the day) if we ctually know God’s heart, if we actually want God’s kingdom to come, if we actually want God’s will be done - We WILL GLADLY welcome the last ones in. We will have to celebrate and be glad when the last ones in receive their reward.
If we claim to know God and to be about His business we’ll stop comparing, stop grumbling, stop worrying about who’s the greatest, stop worrying about the hierarchy - we’ll stop crying NO FAIR!
We’ll not only GLADLY welcome the last ones in, we’ll help bring them in! We’ll celebrate and rejoice when they receive their reward
The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”
Jesus is teaching a parable that is based off of Isaiah 5
The Song of the Vineyard
I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.
He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit.
In Luke 15 Jesus tells three stories about the recovery of something of value that was lost and then is found. In telling these parables, Jesus is teaching us about the heart of God, the nature of God and the character of God.
Which character are you?
Have you grown confident in your own righteousness? Have you developed spiritual arrogance? How do you see ‘outsiders’?
Do you feel separated from God? Are you ashamed to even approach God? How do you view ‘insiders’?
Whichever character you are - Humble yourself, ask God your mercy and it will be freely given. Leave the temple justified.
1) How do you relate to the timeless story of the Fall? 2) Why do you think God gives us free will? 3) Have you opened the door to Jesus?
There are many mommas out there who are struggling because they feel inadequate and they feel empty and so today I hope is a helpful one for you especially, but I am also hopeful that there is a little something in this for everyone today, even you men out there :).
WHAT COULD THE LORD JESUS CHRIST DO THROUGH YOU? You are Enlisted by the Passion of The Lord Jesus Christ (1:1-2).
You are Encouraged by the Presence of The Lord Jesus Christ (1:3-7).
You are Enabled by the Power of The Lord Jesus Christ (1:8a).
You are Enlightened by the Plan of The Lord Jesus Christ (1:8b).
This has been a difficult season. Many of us are probably sitting still in “Saturday,” in the darkness, in the confusion. Even now, knowing that Jesus rose and knowing that the Spirit is here, it can still be hard. It can still seem dark.
We may be feeling discouraged - that the work ahead of us is too much to bear. We may be feeling disbelief - that maybe God isn’t here after all. We may be in denial - that things aren’t really happening like this because it isn’t the way things should be.
The physical, spiritual and emotional battles we have faced over the last year are too heavy a weight to bear.
The Resurrection of Christ - The Foundation of our Faith
1 Corinthians 15: 1-19
15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
We are in the final week of our series “The Road To Easter”, where we are looking at some of the most significant episodes of Jesus’s life that led to the cross and the resurrection. While the cross and the empty tomb of resurrection are the end of that road, Easter is the culmination of God’s eternity-spanning plan to rescue us, His people, from the clutches of sin and death and give us new life, a hope, and a future wrapped in His never-ending love. And as we take an extend look at the interactions and events that led into Easter, I believe there is so much we can learn from and grow through in our mission to live out the hope and resurrection of Jesus in our own lives and share that hope with the world around us!
It has been the greatest pleasure, privilege, and burden getting to walk down this road with you all. There is so much that can be said about the Resurrection that it has nearly been agonizing to figure out just what to share with you! The ENTIRE foundation of our faith rests in Jesus rising from the grave and being alive today. It is His resurrected life that gives us new and resurrected life! So today we are going to zero in on that first Easter morning and the those who experienced it so that we can experience it fresh and anew! Let’s make a start of it!

This Sunday is traditionally referred to as “Palm Sunday”, the beginning of what the Church has often called “Holy Week”. This is the final week, the last week of Jesus’s Earthly ministry. It is the culmination of His journey to the cross, to redemption and hope, to the Resurrection and to Easter. Palm Sunday marks and celebrates Jesus’s triumphant entry to Jerusalem. Many of the same people who witnessed Jesus’s miraculous raising of Lazarus from the dead mere days prior were now waving palm branches and laying them at His feet. The palm branches represented the celebrating of a great victory, often in the context of a military triumph. And so the people were chanting and shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord” and “Blessed is the king of Israel!” The great long awaited Messiah had finally come to set the captives free, defeat the oppressors, usher in the kingdom of God, and restore Israel to its former glory. And so began the tradition of Palm Sunday and celebrating the arrival of Jesus into His kingdom.
But what I find so striking about this celebration of victory and kingdom and Messiah is that it was the wrong victory and kingdom and Messiah. The victory that Jesus was bringing was victory over sin and death. The kingdom that Jesus was ushering in was a kingdom for the broken-hearted, for the losers, for the lowly and meek, for the sinners and saints, and for the least of these. The Messiah that Jesus came to be was not a conquering Messiah but the Suffering Messiah. The people who sang of Him as He entered Jerusalem would be the same people who cursed and rejected Him just a few short days later. Jesus’s triumphant entry into His kingdom was not on palm branches while people adored Him. It was in garden while people betrayed Him and on a cross as God forsook Him.
We are in week 2 of our series “The Road To Easter”, where we are looking at some of the most significant episodes of Jesus’s life that led to the cross and the resurrection. While the cross and the empty tomb of resurrection are the end of that road, Easter is the culmination of God’s eternity-spanning plan to rescue us, His people, from the clutches of sin and death and give us new life, a hope, and a future wrapped in His never-ending love. And as we take an extend look at the interactions and events that led into Easter, I believe there is so much we can learn from and grow through in our mission to live out the hope and resurrection of Jesus in our own lives and share that hope with the world around us!
This week we are going to dive into the deeper part of the pool as we look at “The Last Supper”, one of the more universally life-altering events in Jesus’s life! This particular message is a little more “academic” and detailed, because the significance surrounding the Last Supper, stretching thousands of years back to the Exodus of Israel, cannot be understated in it’s importance to our relationship to God and the world around us today. Whole libraries of books have been written on this subject alone so we will only be doing a fly-by overview of this but I can assure you that if you can hang with us on this one, it will be a blessing to your heart! Last week we looked at the Jesus’s trial in the desert with the enemy and how Jesus’s handling of it can help us as we walk through our own deserts trials. This week we are going to zero in on Jesus’s miracle of “The Raising Of Lazarus” and examine how this showy and yet very intimate moment in Jesus’s life can speak into our lives! Well it’s March and we are entering into Easter season so it’s time for a new series! One of the things that puzzles me about Easter is our treatment of it. We more or less devote four, five, six weeks or even two months to Christmas, depending on when you chose to start listening to Christmas music haha! But Easter, arguably the single most important event in all of creation, when the culmination of God’s great effort and sacrifice to save humanity from sin and death and bring us back to Him comes to fruition, more or less gets regulated to a weekend. To the cross and the tomb.
While the cross and the empty tomb are the end result of God’s plan and therefor cannot be understated in terms of importance to us, Easter is so much more than just the span of three days! There is so much to consider in light of what God was doing to redeem the world and bring us back to Him. In light of this, we are going to spend the next several weeks walking down “The Road To Easter”. We are going to step into and examine some of the most intimate, trying, and powerful events of Jesus’s life as He was walking towards the cross and our freedom! I truly believe there is so much to learn and gain from spending time with Jesus in this way, particularly in light of the past year and what is going on in the world around us. Join us on this journey and let’s sight our eyes and heart on the redemptive plan and sacrifice of the Son of God!

People who are deeply connected to the body are transformed and make incredible impacts all over the world. Many of those who don’t find connection with the body of Christ, tend to flounder in life and find themselves on paths to destruction.

As we wrap up these promises and the start of our new year, we come to what I consider to be maybe the most difficult of them to live in and yet, still so so so important and necessary: The Promise Of Overcoming The World!

Peeps, I am SO INCREDIBLY EXCITED because over the next two weeks we are going to dive deep into the amazing promise of the Holy Spirit! Now originally we were only going to spend one week on the Holy Spirit but, after some prayer and study I began to see SO MANY of God’s promises to us are wrapped up in the Holy Spirit. And I just couldn’t cover all of that in one message! Truly, the Holy Spirit is so deserving of His own series haha, but we will get to that sometime I’m sure.
Now for some time, the Holy Spirit has been a touchy and confused subject in the evangelical church world. For instance, many people think of Him less as Person of the Trinity and more like a spiritual mist or thing or even a ghost, referring to the Spirit as an “it”. I know I have called Him an “it” many times and sometimes I still catch myself saying “it”. (If this is you also, don’t worry, I don’t think the Holy Spirit gets too offended by that. Remember, no condemnation!) But because some individuals have wrongly abused the Holy Spirit and turned Him into a mythical genie in a lamp, large portions of the church world-wide have shied away from talking about Him. At times He has become almost a minor part of the Trinity, with people thanking God the Father for His power and provision, Jesus Christ the Son for His love and sacrifice, and just sort of mumbling something about the Holy Spirit quietly, relegating Him to barely an afterthought.
But the truth is the Holy Spirit is so important to our lives today! Indeed, our walk with God would be impossible without the Holy Spirit in our lives. Even last week when we look at Romans 8: 1-4, we learned that, “For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death”. So even our freedom in Christ was accomplished for us because Jesus worked through the Spirit of God!
Now the reality is there is so much to say about the Holy Spirit that even with two whole weeks, we will really only be doing a brief overview. Obviously most of what we will talk about will come from scripture itself and the Holy Spirit’s guidance (haha), but some of what I will share comes from a chapter in a book call “Gospel Centered Discipleship” by Jonathan K. Dodson and “Forgotten God” by Francis Chan. Both are excellent books that are perhaps a little dry but very helpful and formative books on our walk with God. After my prep for our conversation about the Holy Spirit, I think it will be helpful to look at all this from two different angles (with some overlap): the presence of the Holy Spirit and the power of the Holy Spirit. This week we are going to look at the promise of the presence of the Holy Spirit and how He affects us. Alright lets make a start of it!

We, the staff of Phos, love you all so much and truly hope you had a safe and wonderful Christmas holiday with your family and friends. We are so grateful for your all’s deep love for God, for each other, for us, and for your commitment to sharing Jesus with and serving the community. You all are a blessing and we are thankful to walk through life with you!
Goodness, this has been such a challenging year for not only us as a church but for the whole world. With the loss of loved ones, isolation due to the pandemic, and social/political/economic strife, the one big thing that the whole world probably asked Santa for was THE END OF 2020! I mean seriously, have any of us ever been so happy and excited for a new year??? So many people are looking forward to and longing for the new year because it means that the ridiculous mess that has been 2020 will finally be over. And 2021 will be much better, right? I mean, as bad as 2020 was, 2021 has to be better.
Guys, I so hope for your sake and mine that 2021 is going to be better. I hope that we can find some sense of normal, that life calms down, that people’s lives are no long in danger from the illness and that we can truly be together again. But the reality is we have no control over that. It might be better, goodness I hope it is! But it is very likely that this new year will be very much like 2020. So what do we do? We, the church, have to place our hope in something, in someone, that we are sure of. We have to hang our lives on the one thing in the universe that doesn’t change, that doesn’t disappoint us, that will always be there to guide and support us, regardless of good circumstances or bad. We have to lean into God, into His word, into what He has taught us and promised us about Himself and ourselves. And as we stand firmly on Jesus, we gain the stability of Him, not our ever changing circumstances, which allows us to reframe our perspective on our lives and truly react and respond in a way that helps others around us and bring peace and contentment in our own lives.
So over the course of the next several weeks we are going to dive deep into what God has taught us and promised us about Himself, our lives, and the world around us. Alright, let’s start out this new year and jump into Jesus!

We are in week 3 of our “Simply Christmas” series, leaning into the different aspects of the celebration of Advent. The word advent means “the arrival of a notable person, thing, or event.” And of course, we celebrate the season of advent because of the arrival of Jesus, who came to bring us hope, joy, love, and peace.
Laura opened up the advent series a couple of weeks ago with the promise of Hope. Last week Julie shared with us her story of seeking and finding Joy in the midst of grief. This week, we will converge around the arrival of Love. Let’s get to it!
The Christmas Story is all about God’ gift of sending his son Jesus to the world. Jesus was the light of the world bringing restoration to the darken world. This story came though His word like Laura talked about last week- this story was a very unlikely story and not what the people of God expected.
It is easy to interpret silence as absence.
However, God’s silence didn’t mean He wasn’t working, it didn’t mean He didn’t care and it didn’t mean He didn’t love His people.
We know this by remembering so many prophecies fulfilled in Jesus. And now, Jesus asks us to remember His promises - which will one day be fulfilled.
So, in the silence, cling to those promises with hope - hope in a future with God where purposes are revealed and promises fulfilled.

Perseverance is the goal. Not perfection. Even Paul had not achieved this yet. And this is the guy who wrote most of the New Testament and almost single-handedly spread the gospel all across the world! But Paul presses on, progresses in his faith, advancing in his knowing of Jesus, He perseveres towards the goal, the goal of walking with God and slowly becoming more and more like Him! This perseveance isn’t about being perfect for God. It is about walking with Jesus’s perfection and allowing Him to approve of us and transform us. Jesus sets us free from having to be perfect!
Here are some questions to ponder this week:
1.) What are the “dogs” in your life forcing you to work for your value and worth and love in Jesus?
2.) Do you find confidence and contentment and love in knowing God? Why and how?
3.) What are your “goals” for your life? Do they line up with Jesus? If not, should they? Why?
Perseverance is tough. It is very difficult. But it is worth it. Because Jesus is worthy it. And so are you.
You are loved, Believe it!

Loving God with all of our strength might seem easy - until we really think about what that mean. However, the reward is great. Let’s trade our temporary treasure for our forever crown.

This last statement that Jesus makes ends up being the culmination of all the “I AM” statements. Again, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out any of those other sermons that you missed. As we examine this last statement and what it means for us, please know how much we, the staff of Phos, love you all and are praying for you continually. This week we will be in John 14 looking at Jesus’s statement “I am the way, the truth, and the life” and the coming of the Holy Spirit!
We hope you all had a good week. Last week we soft-launched a new series called: I AM: Who Jesus is and what He came to do. There are several of these cryptic “I am” statements scattered all through the gospel of John. Jesus used these metaphor filled statements to describe Himself, His relationship with God, and the nature of His relationship with the world.
Now, the significance of His declarations reaches all the way back to Exodus 3 in the Old Testament. Here we find the story of God appearing to Moses and choosing him to be the one who leads the Israelites out of slavery from Egypt. When Moses asks God who shall he say is sending him, the Lord replies with, “I AM WHO I AM… I AM has sent me to you.”
So when Jesus makes these statements, “I am the light of the world, I am the true vine, I am the bread of life, etc”, He is equating Himself with God, saying that He and the Father are One. And because the Israelites would have been very familiar with the story of Moses, these statements would have had a dramatic impact on them. For some, it would be revelatory, for others it would have been blasphemous.
We, as a church and a community, are still very much struggling with the passing of our dear Pastor and friend, Jeff Fuson. And so we felt that perhaps the best and most helpful thing for us as we grieve and strive to move forward is to stick close to the gospels and the words of Jesus. Today we are going to look at two of Jesus’s “I AM” statements: I am the Door of the sheep and I am the Good Shepherd. We hope that it is helpful and hopeful for you!
We were planning on starting a new series this week called I AM: Who Jesus is and what He came to do. Looking at the life of Jesus to help us figure out how to live the love of God out in our lives. However, I didn’t want to try to force us into a new series just because we had been planning towards it. But as I’ve reflected on all these stories of Jeff and Phos, I am reminded of another story.

Notice that the ones who ‘did not want me to rule over them’ get ‘smote’ at the end of Jesus story in Luke 19:27 Do you realize that it’s possible to end up being an ‘enemy of God’? Do you realize that you can humble yourself and admit that God’s ways are higher than yours and beg for mercy and He will meet you right there and rescue you? Will you remain confident in your own righteousness or will you humble yourself and lean into His boundless mercy and grace and turn from your sin?

We all have those moments when we messed up so bad at something, we would give anything to forget it or even go back and fix the mess we made. Sometimes this is simply a hilarious story of a mix-up or some embarrassing mistake that you are able to look back on and laugh about, like when you first struggled to learn how to ride a bike or forgetting the name of some you met before (or even butchering a song you are leading at church!)
But a deep fear of many people in life, including most likely you and I, is the fear that we are simply not good enough to measure up to God’s standard. That we have made too many mistakes, that we don’t know enough scripture, that we are simply not worthy to actually follow God or to be used by Him in His church. And it is easy enough to understand why people often feel this way.

Jonah lived in a time when he truly hoped that the assyrians would be smote[d] by God. Jonah hoped that God would go all ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’ on the evil empire and especially Nineveh and rain down hell fire and brimstone and burn them to charcoal remnants or hollow lava statues.
It’s certainly what Jonah wanted to see done to the Assyrians and especially to Nineveh. He prayed for their demise and he despised them more than he loved his own life. His nationalism became a blinding idol that demanded the sacrifice of the Assyrian enemy – even innocent children and puppies.

When God asks something of us that we don’t like or don’t understand what our default mode of operation? Ignore Him? Run from Him? Hide from Him? Be angry with Him? Try to ‘kill Him off by declaring our allegiance to world where there is no God’? That is, by refusing to recognize Him as even existing we try to gain control over our total destiny. The problem with our desires, and our plans, and our story and our lives is that there is never enough of it. Seeking our desires and our life leaves us wanting, trying to fill an endless pit. This is how people end up in places of addictions like pornography, substance abuse, entertainment, debt.

Daniel and his friends were to be given new identities (literally their names changed from names that honored God to names that honored the gods of Babylon) and put through a rigorous re-training process. Their talents and abilities given to them by God were to be put to use to learn the vast knowledge and language of Babylon, giving them PURPOSE. They were to eat food from the King’s table, granting them PLEASURE. And at the end of their education, they were to be present to the King and enter his service, giving them POWER. We have the Bible because SOMETHING HAPPENED that was worth writing down and defending and preserving and that SOMETHING was the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
This launched Christianity and early Christians assembled a group of texts into one book called ‘the Bible’ hundreds of years after the Resurrection of Jesus. They pulled together writings about the eye witness accounts of Jesus and His resurrection and the launch of the early church. And, they gathered many letters written to the early churches as well. AND, because of their interest in Jesus and his heritage and how God brought Jesus into the world through the people of Israel, they also gathered up ancient Hebrew texts that we now call the Old Testament and added them to ‘The Bible.’
The first full assembly of the Bible into something similar to what we have today came after Constantine’s rise to power in Rome.
Many people attempted to write the story of Jesus because something happened.
The ‘something’ that happened was the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. It was witnessed and defended by hundreds and launched a movement that changed the entire world.

For the past few weeks, we have been looking at the issue of faith. That, not only do we need faith to please God, but truthfully we need faith just to live! One of my most favorite sources of inspiration/Jesus object lesson/visuals is Star Wars. In “The Empire Strikes Back”, Master Yoda is training Luke Skywalker in the ways of the Jedi. Yoda purposefully sends Luke into a “dark-side cave”, not to harm Luke, but for Luke to confront his own fears and doubts. In much the same way, Jesus sends us into “The Deep End” where we are forced to confront our sin and doubt so that our faith may be tested and approved and where we can seek the hurting and broken.
