In order to paint a holistic picture of the plight, hopes, and dreams of Erie, NEXT seeks to spotlight and analyze issues that affect inner-city Erie from the perspective of its next generation of voices – voices of those who are taking the lead on various aspects of the community. As it was during the days of the iconic Dr. King, the winds of change are often reflected in the actions and words of a younger and more idealistic age group.
What's really at stake with Millcreek's proposed government change? Hosts Marcus Atkinson and Chuck Cammarata are joined by current Supervisor Kim Clear, who is not running for re-election, for a candid and crucial conversation. Free from campaign politics, Clear makes her case against the ballot initiative to switch to a five-member, part-time board. You hear it all the time about Generation Z (people born between – roughly – 1995 and 2010) You hear, “Those kids, Gen Z, are so lazy, entitled, and soft...” Some of that is just the usual
older folk lamenting “These kids these days!!” It has been going on forever, but, there are
actually some things about this generation as it comes of age – these kids are now between 15
and 30 – that does in fact make them very different from previous generations.
They are the first generation never to know a world without the internet, so technology and social media is in their DNA for both good and ill. In America they are the first generation to be majority non-white. They were born into and have grown up in the post 9/11 world where terrorism is far more prevalent than in most past generations. They are a generation facing a future of enormous challenges, from climate change, to assault on democracy in America, to reasserting a kind of “Gilded Age” economy that makes a mockery of the American Dream.
They twice as likely as previous generations to report being depressed, anxious, and
pessimistic about the future.
They are a generation that has experienced the foundations that us older Americans depended on, crumbling beneath them. But, for all the bad news, and all the complaining about them, I find Gen Z to be thoughtful, compassionate, and amazingly creative as they tackle the problems we have left them to deal with.
Today’s program is the first in a series on Gen Z, who they are, how they are different, and what we can learn about and from them. Interviewing a bunch of them over the past few weeks have been tremendously encouraging and hopeful for me.

Boys II Men is a program developed by Anthony McGowan in Erie, Pennsylvania, focused on fostering brotherhood among young men. Mr. McGowan aims to help these young men avoid becoming statistics related to gang involvement and to treat one another like family. The program offers various resources, teaching valuable skills such as how to perform oil changes, play football, and box. These resources offer young men the opportunity to come together and form meaningful connections. Additionally, it provides guidance on how to submit a resume effectively and prepare for job interviews. Mr. McGowan created this program out of love for the community, to improve the environment for young men as they transition into adulthood and strive for a better quality of life.

In this episode Chuck Cammarata chats with Mayor Joe Schember, running for a third term and a chance to extend his legacy of hope and service. When Joe originally ran for mayor he made it known that he wanted to rid the city of racism and make Erie a more welcoming city. He also inherited a city that was deeply in debt, had a significant urban blight problem, and a self esteem deficit.
In his seven years as mayor the city has, among other things, been able to gain the designation of “Welcoming City”, which is a title awarded to by the Welcoming America network base on a number of criteria, created budget surpluses, procured millions of dollars in grant money, which has enabled them to avoid raising taxes for the past 6 years, has sponsored programs that have connected 120 law enforcement officers to local schools working with 1,600 students, and more. He is hoping to be granted the privilege of leading the city for 4 more years to continue putting in place programs that will further improve life for Erie residents.

One Hundred Black Men began in 1963 to organize African American men to explore ways to improve conditions in Black communities. We judge and write off those who find themselves “unhoused”. Not Jennie Hagerty. Jennie sees these women as beautiful people who just need some help to build healthier lives for themselves and their children.
Jennie Hagerty is an impressive community leader. She has been the executive director of the Mercy Center for Women for the past 8 yrs and she has been growing her organization to serve more women in need. She has won awards for her fund raising and last year was named the 2024 Nonprofit Excellence Awards CEO of the Year.
She is recognized around town, and beyond, as a stellar fund-raiser, which is true, in part, because she passionately believes in the work she does to serve people who are not being well served by the social service systems and who are often stigmatized and marginalized
Her most recent accomplishment was the conceptualization, oversight, and fundraising efforts that transformed the vacant Holy Rosary School into an affordable housing and resource hub, the first of its kind in Erie, now named the Mercy Anchor Community Center. To bring that project to fruition she needed to raise four million dollars. She actually raised five and a half million!

Donald Trump will be the next president of the United States. His win against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris reflects a rightward shift across the country as voters prioritized economic and immigration concerns—Trump’s signature issues. According to The Associated Press, Trump secured at least 277 Electoral College votes by early Wednesday morning, putting him over the 270 needed to declare victory. More than 72 million ballots were cast in his favor, marking the first time that a Republican presidential candidate has won the popular vote in 20 years, and his campaign is projected to have swept all seven swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin. The GOP also flipped the Senate, securing majority control with 52 seats. Control of the House of Representatives is still up in the air. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate,” Trump said on Tuesday. On Monday night (10/14/2024), Vice President Kamala Harris packed Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, Pennsylvania, a swing corner of the critical swing state in the 2024 presidential election. Trump was simultaneously on the other side of the state, speaking in Upper Providence Township, 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Long lines began to snake outside the arena as early as four-and-a-half hours before Harris’ Monday rally. A DJ played party music inside as spectators filled the floor and the stands of the roughly 9,000-seat arena. Our four guests on today’s show were in attendance. A recent survey from The Energy Policy Institute at The University of Chicago found the following information. After a several-year decline in support for the statement that human activities primarily drive climate change, support rebounded in 2024, with 54 percent of respondents agreeing that humans are the primary driver. The increase was most pronounced among Democrats, with a 7-percentage point bump in just one year. Notably, 40 percent of young Republicans said they believe climate change is primarily human-driven, up from just 26 percent in 2017. The belief among older Republicans didn’t change. A new lawsuit has surfaced in the Southern District of New York, accusing Diddy and his former bodyguard, Joseph Sherman, of drugging and violently raping plaintiff Thalia Graves at the Bad Boy Records studio in 2001. According to the complaint, the attack left Graves with severe physical and emotional trauma that has haunted her for over two decades. Months ago, we went through the complaint by Cassie Ventura, who was the catalyst for this chain of events. Larry Meredith made local political history on Nov. 8, 1977, when, at 30 years old, he became the first Black city resident to win a City Council seat. Meredith would serve on the City Council through 1981, including a term as council president. He later returned to the council dais in 2001 as a City Council appointee to fill the unexpired term of Gayle Wright. Months ago, NEXT discussed the legal complaint filed by R&B artist Cassie and wondered aloud if this would turn into a criminal complaint. For the past decade, Dr. Julia Robinson Moore has been researching and uncovering the truth about burial grounds for enslaved people in churches and communities in and around here home in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Moore is an ordained Presbyterian pastor and as she traveled around preaching at various churches she noticed something about the cemeteries that are on the church grounds of so many churches. What she noticed was that the cemeteries had two distinct sections, one that was manicured and well maintained with beautiful stones and gardens where the white people were buried, and the other, which was largely unmaintained, overgrown and had fallen into disuse. These were the graves of slaves.
As a tactic for reclaiming dignity and bringing together those whose ancestors were slave owners and those who were slaves she has begun working with churches to restore the slave cemeteries. She says that this work of hers is about building communities committed to truth telling and healing and racial justice and reconciliation.

Author and activist Gareth Higgins is our guest today. Gareth was born in Belfast in 1975, grew up during a time of violent conflict in northern Ireland. He writes and speaks about the power of storytelling to shape our lives and world, to bring peace and make justice, and how to take life seriously without believing your own propaganda. He has been involved in peace-building and violence reduction in northern Ireland by helping the residents of Northern Ireland address the legacy of conflict that drove the violence.
Gareth owns a Ph.D. in Sociology from Queen’s University Belfast, and helped teach the world’s first graduate course in Reconciliation Studies at Trinity College Dublin. He also helped found the Wild Goose, New Story and Movies & Meaning festivals. He leads retreats in North America and Ireland; and he founded The Porch Magazine.

Donald Trump's history of offensive language toward Blackpeople is deeply troubling and has sparked widespread condemnation. From referring to African nations as "s***hole countries" to repeatedly attacking Black public figures with derogatory terms, such as calling Congresswoman Maxine Waters "low IQ" and labeling athletes who protested racial injustice as "sons of B’s," Trump's rhetoric has been divisive and harmful. His recent language on the campaign trail has particularly troubled many voters. Marcus uses some of these comments as a prelude to next week’s Trump-Biden rhetorical analysis. Over the past few years, County politics in Erie PA has been akin to a realty show. A republican controlled County Council has been at the epicenter of internal battles, public outcries, protests, etc., This past election season has shifted the “D” and “R” landscape significantly. In the 3rd District race, Democrat Rock Copeland defeated Republican Kim Hunter, 4,990 to 2,898 votes. The seat, which represents parts of Millcreek Township and the city of Erie, had been vacated by Democrat Mary Rennie who resigned in July. Marcus has a candid discussion via Zoom with this new candidate about this new and exciting chapter for himself and Erie County.

But, you see, that is not what people see when they lay eyes on my friend, because my friend is a transgender person. I have been wondering about these kinds of questions for a long time. I wonder. Why do we hate people who really are not hurting anyone? Why are we so afraid of the other? Why do people, like my friend – LGBTQ people and Black and Brown people and people who participate in other religions – make us so uncomfortable? Why do we need so badly to judge others and marginalize them? Why do we need to demean – to put others down?”

Susannah Faulkner is a classically trained dancer who remains active in performing, and teaching ballet even though she is engaged as a public servant in all kinds of ways. She is an emerging policymaker who has worked with public and private groups across the country and around the world. She is currently a member of Erie's city council and recently was responsible for introducing and shepherding the passage of a bill to declare Erie a “Sanctuary City” for LGBTQ people.
Dr. Tyler Titus, is a newly elected city council member, a Licensed Professional Counselor, an activist, a teacher and presenter on a national scale working to train educators, service providers, other counselors, medical practitioners about equity, social justice, and policy reform. Tyler is the founder of Compton's Table which works to create a safe community for queer young people here in Northwestern PA. Tyler was also the first openly transgender person elected to public office in the state of PA.
