Stewards of Grace: Recent Episodes

Justine Cheri Ordway

How can you be a good steward of God’s grace in your life? On the Stewards of Grace podcast, Justine seeks to provide everyday women with theologically rich, doctrinally sound, and gospel-focused conversations with the hope of encouraging them to put into daily practice what they know and believe for the glory of God and the building of his Kingdom!

What does God actually say about womanhood? In a culture where the answer shifts depending on who you ask—redefine it, reject it, celebrate it, reinvent it—this episode goes back to Scripture itself. Justine sits down with author and Bible teacher Jen Oshman to talk about her Bible study Very Good, which traces the entire storyline of Scripture to recover God's beautiful design for women. Whether you're single, married, working, raising children, or simply trying to follow Jesus faithfully, this conversation offers clarity, encouragement, and a fresh invitation to open the Bible for yourself.

About Jen Oshman

Jen Oshman has been married for 27 years and is a mother to four daughters. After 15 years on the mission field in Japan and the Czech Republic, she returned to Colorado, where she and her husband unexpectedly planted a church in their living room. Alongside her church work, Jen is passionate about writing and speaking. She's the author of several books and Bible studies, including Very Good and Created on Purpose: God's Design for Girls.

What We Cover in This Episode

A global perspective on gender roles. Fifteen years overseas gave Jen a vantage point most American Christians never get. In many parts of the world, the conversation centers on the call to evangelize and teach—not on debating the limits placed on women. Returning to the U.S., she was struck by how negative and restrictive the discussion had become, fixated on what women can't do rather than what they're called to.

Why she wrote Very Good. Rather than telling women what to think, Jen invites them to explore Scripture for themselves. She hands readers the tools of hermeneutics so they can interpret the Bible in context and arrive at a confident, grounded understanding of God's design.

Keeping secondary issues in their place. Jen makes the case that questions about women in ministry, while genuinely important, shouldn't overshadow the primary doctrines of salvation and the nature of God. She advocates for unity among believers who can support their convictions from Scripture, even when they land in different places.

The women of Scripture you need to know. From Tamar and Rahab to Jesus' interactions with women in Luke, Jen highlights how God consistently uses complex, real women to advance His kingdom—and what their stories reveal about His design.

Key Takeaways

  • Biblical womanhood is rooted in Scripture and meant to be understood in a far broader context than cultural limitations.
  • Engaging the Bible personally empowers women to find their own voices and convictions.
  • Unity in the church means holding firmly to primary issues while making room for diverse views on secondary matters.
  • Studying the whole Bible—not isolated proof-texts—is essential to understanding women's roles.

We treat spiritual disciplines like a self-improvement checklist—read the Bible, pray, show up—and then wonder why it all feels like one more thing to manage. This episode digs into what's actually missing: not more willpower or a better routine, but dependency on God. When we reframe prayer and Scripture as lifelines rather than optional habits, everything changes.

In this episode:

  • Why treating spiritual disciplines as optional turns them into a to-do list
  • The difference between self-improvement and genuine spiritual growth
  • How inconsistency often signals a dependency problem, not a discipline problem
  • The armor of God (Ephesians 6) as a framework for relying on His strength
  • Esther as a model of dependency—prayer and fasting before facing the king

Key takeaways:

  • Spiritual disciplines aren't optional habits; they're the means of connecting with God
  • Dependency on God is the engine of real spiritual growth
  • Consistency flows from reliance, not the other way around

In this episode of the Going Deeper podcast, I sit down with speaker Shelbi Shutt to talk about faith, suffering, and what real comfort looks like in a world obsessed with ease and leisure. Shelbi lives with muscular dystrophy, and her story has profoundly shaped the way she understands the good life, discipleship, and the presence of God. Her honesty pushes us to examine what we run to for comfort and whether those places actually bring life.

We talk about how suffering exposes the beliefs we carry beneath the surface. She shares how her diagnosis forced her to confront the “Jesus plus” gospel she didn’t realize she held, and how choosing to participate in the sufferings of Christ has formed her spiritual maturity. She reminds us that true comfort is found in the presence of God.

In a world filled with noise, discipling our attention becomes a real part of following Jesus. We explore how prayer reorients us, how lament and celebration can coexist, and how resurrection life isn’t just a future hope but a present reality that shapes our perspective today.

In this episode of the Going Deeper podcast, I sit down with my own acquisitions editor, Eddie Larow of Baker Books. We talk about what an acquisitions editor actually does, how he helps authors connect with the readers who need their message, and how my own unexpected journey into authorship was guided by God’s timing.

From there, we widen the conversation to the cultural landscape shaping Gen Z: their longing for home, the pull toward community, and the deep sense of spiritual homelessness many young adults feel in a secular age. We explore how modernity and mobility have created restlessness, why “nomadic modernity” captures so much of our cultural moment, and how the return to historic churches reveals a desire for structure, order, and rootedness.

We end with a call to localism—pursuing embodied, committed community right where we live.

In this episode, I’m sharing why Advent has become such a meaningful season for me—one marked by anticipation, preparation, and a deliberate slowing down. I talk through some of the practices my family and I are leaning into this year, why I’m taking a step back from social media, and how intentional rhythms can make room for real peace and hope.

I also walk through a reading from Philippians and reflect on the themes of humility, contentment, and the true cost of following Jesus. My prayer is that this conversation helps you sink deeper into Scripture and cultivate a heart that’s attentive to Christ as we move toward Christmas.

In this episode of Going Deeper, I talk with Sharon Hodde Miller about the growing problem of self-righteousness among Christians online, especially after Charlie Kirk's assassination. We unpack how the self-esteem movement has shaped how many believers think about identity and worth—and how it fosters the idea that we are called to self-discovery rather than self-denial. Sharon also shares biblical wisdom on modesty and humility in appearance, revealing that modesty may not be so much about covering up as about being intentional about dressing in a way that fosters compassion rather than comparison.

In this episode of Going Deeper, I’m unpacking the idea of the “Wellness Gospel”—the subtle belief that health and self-optimization can save us. I share about my own journey with health and wellness, and how something good slowly became an identity that distanced me from Jesus. I talk about how easy it is to elevate health, balance, and self-care above obedience and surrender, and how the true gospel of Jesus calls us into something far more radical. Through Scripture, I contrast the Wellness Gospel with the real gospel—the one that invites us to lose our lives for Christ’s sake and trust Him completely.

I also answered a listener's question about feeling distant from God. I share how faith isn’t about chasing feelings but about knowing God and remembering His faithfulness, even when our emotions waver. My hope is that this episode helps you see the difference between caring for your body and worshiping it—and reminds you that real wellness begins with a soul anchored in Him.

In this episode, I’m joined by Griffin Gooch to talk about one of the most misunderstood topics in both culture and the church—happiness. Griffin is a theologian and writer who’s exploring what it really means to live a happy and holy life, and how our understanding of happiness has shifted throughout history.

We dig into the Beatitudes as Jesus’s surprising pathway to joy, how pleasure, meaning, and growth each play a role in true happiness, and why pursuing happiness for its own sake often leaves us emptier than before. Griffin also shares practical, gospel-shaped ways to navigate mental health struggles, practice gratitude, and find lasting fulfillment through community and service.

If you’ve ever wrestled with the tension between happiness and holiness, or wondered what Jesus actually meant by the “abundant life,” this conversation will challenge and encourage you in the best way.

Welcome back to Going Deeper! After a short break, I’m so excited to return with a brand-new season—and to finally share a few updates on what’s been happening behind the scenes, including my upcoming book on the “good life” and my new newsletter, The Digest.

In today’s episode, we’re diving into several big conversations happening across Christian culture—from Forrest Frank’s decision not to attend the Dove Awards, to the online discourse surrounding Jackie Hill Perry and Christian Nationalism, and even the controversy surrounding Taylor Swift’s latest album. These cultural moments have raised numerous questions about personal convictions, Christian liberty, and what unity entails within the body of Christ.

We’ll talk about how to discern between sin and personal conviction, why sanctification looks different for every believer, and how to practice humility and grace when we disagree. At the heart of it all is this: how can we live in the world but not of it, and what does God say about how we should live as witnesses of Jesus?

In this episode, I’m exploring the complex world of cultural beauty standards and self-perception through a biblical lens. I address the tension we experience regarding personal choices about our appearance, what it means to bear God’s image, and how cultural expectations can shape—or sometimes distort—our self-perception. I’m also sharing a bit of my writing journey and what I’m learning about humility as I grow older in a world that is often obsessed with youth and perfection. I hope that this conversation will help us approach beauty with wisdom, discernment, and hearts anchored in truth and grace.

In this episode of the Going Deeper podcast, I’m joined by my friend Bethany for a heartfelt conversation about prayer—especially in the thick of motherhood. Bethany shares her journey to faith and how her prayer life has grown and changed over the years. We talk honestly about the struggle to stay connected to God when life feels loud and overwhelming, and how prayer doesn’t have to be formal or perfect—it can simply be a real, ongoing conversation with the Lord. We also reflect on the power of praying in community, the legacy our prayers leave for our children, and how vulnerability with God is where intimacy begins. Whether you feel confident in your prayer life or completely scattered, I hope this episode reminds you that God just wants your heart—and He’s always ready to listen.

In this episode, I’m diving into the often-quoted verse, “The joy of the Lord is your strength,” from Nehemiah 8:10. We’ll take a closer look at the context of this verse—what was happening with the Israelites after their return from exile, and what it actually means that the joy of the Lord is our strength.

Here’s what we’ll explore together:

  • The story behind Nehemiah and the rebuilding of both walls and hearts
  • What it really means to find joy in the Lord
  • How that joy becomes a source of strength in our daily lives

I wrap up by reflecting on how joy helps us keep going, especially when things get hard. It reminds us that we’re not alone and that God’s joy is both our anchor and our fuel.

In today’s episode, I’m coming to you straight from my living room with a smorgasbord of updates and reflections. I share a little life update (new job, sickness, and the decision to almost quit the podcast), along with a heartfelt thank you for your graciousness along the way.

We dive into Deuteronomy 6, exploring Moses’ final words to a new generation of Israelites standing on the edge of the Promised Land — and how his call to remember God still speaks to us today. In a culture where Jesus can easily become just another accessory, we’re called to live set apart and stay rooted in who he is.

Today, we're diving into the topic of anxiety and aiming to leave you feeling hopeful and equipped to starve out the worry in your life. I’ll share my experiences with anxiety, including postpartum struggles and my first panic attack. We'll distinguish between true anxiety and anxious thinking.

For those feeling anxious, I’ll offer some hope through scripture, prayer, and ways to help you renew your mind and redeem your thought patterns. Remember, God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control. To manage anxiety, I suggest things like cutting out caffeine, improving sleep habits, staying hydrated, and avoiding social media or true crime shows. It’s crucial to address any underlying triggers and lean on the support of friends, family, and scripture. Together, we can pursue peace and find comfort in Christ!

In today's episode, we're diving into the issue of having a critical spirit, especially as it's been absorbed into our culture and personal relationships through social media. There’s a lot of negativity out there, especially from some Christian commentators who thrive on judgment and condescension. This creates a culture where conflict and critique get the most attention, which unfortunately seeps into the Church. If we truly reflect on our own sin in light of Christ’s righteousness, we’ll stop fixating on others’ flaws. Our words should radiate grace instead of pride.

The true enemy is Satan. He thrives on a divided church and loves to see us distracted by pointless arguments and disagreements. When our hearts are hardened, we fall right into his trap. But when we embrace God’s love and recognize our own faults, we’re much less likely to disparage others. The struggle is real, and whether we see it or not, our culture’s fixation on conflict is hardening our hearts toward each other, and creating a culture of critical spirits.

Welcome to season two of the Going Deeper podcast! Fittingly, today, we will talk about how to 'go deeper' with God in 2025. Essentially, we're going to answer the question of how we actually grow spiritually and do so in a way that contrasts the ways of culture and the world.

After taking some time off, I feel recharged and ready to tackle the topic of moving beyond a superficial Sunday morning faith. In a world where it’s easy to be a lukewarm Christian, I know many of us want more. I’ll be sharing my journey of surrendering fully to God and letting go of half-hearted beliefs.

Going deeper isn’t about doing more; it’s about our closeness and conformity to Christ. The closer we get to Him, the more we become like Him.

In today's episode, I sat down with Whitney Lowe to discuss her new book, Set Your Eyes Higher: A 40-Day Reset to Slow Your Anxiety and Fix Your Focus on God, available on September 24th!

We talk about everything, from devotionals and Bible reading to burnout and body image.

Follow Whitney on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/whitneypiersonlowe/

More about Set Your Eyes Higher:

Americans spend an average of seven hours and three
minutes online every day, according to DataReportal.
Social media algorithms are designed to keep users
returning to their phones for a seemingly endless cycle of
information, and the increasing dependence on phones
and devices is working – Americans spend an average of
four hours and twenty-five minutes a day on a
smartphone, according to Reviews.org. Yet despite living
in the information age, many people increasingly report
that life feels like it makes less sense, and research has
found that that excessive screen time can have a
substantial negative impact on both physical and mental
well-being. Whitney Lowe witnessed this negative impact
firsthand: not only did she suffer physical pain from
straining her neck to constantly look down at a device,
social media also compounded her insecurity and
anxiousness. Whitney knew she needed to set her gaze
somewhere else— somewhere up and out.

Set Your Eyes Higher: A 40-Day Reset to Slow Your
Anxiety and Fix Your Focus on God (Zondervan Gift, September 24, 2024) by Whitney Lowe is a 40-day reset that will help you let go of what's not serving you, honor your limitations, and turn your gaze toward a God who loves who you are and who you're becoming in Him.

Welcome to the Going Deeper Podcast! For those who’ve been following me for a while, you know I started podcasting five years ago, in 2019 and took a break at the beginning of 2023. It’s been almost 18 months since I’ve been behind the mic, and I am so glad to be back. As you can tell, we’ve done a little podcast rebrand and refresh since then!

So what is “Going Deeper” all about?

On this podcast, we will challenge the cultural status quo and societal norms that keep us from living a deep life of faith. We will discuss topics all across the spiritual-secular spectrum, from social media, hustle culture, individualism, and body image to fasting, scripture memory, church, and spiritual disciplines, all from a Christ-centered, gospel-focused perspective.

The constant stimulation and have-it-all mentality of modern culture can feel like a heavy, unshakeable burden. How do we wholeheartedly follow Jesus in such a warped and weary world?

I want you to leave each episode feeling refreshed and encouraged to go deeper in your relationship with God despite the ever-present obstacles getting in your way.

Here are some things you can expect from this podcast:

  1. We will have cultural conversations from a Christ-centered perspective.
  2. We will run in 12-week seasons. So, season 1 starts now and ends right before my due date in October!
  3. Each episode will be between 30-45 minutes long and will be both solo and interview-style.

Just a little bit about me: I’m married to my youth group sweetheart, and I’m a mom of almost three. When I’m not having spiritual conversations with mom friends over chaotic toddler playdates or making tacos for my family of four, you’ll find me writing and episode scripting, discussing books over dinner at Panera with friends, and leading a Women’s Bible Study at my local church.

I’m so excited about what’s in store for this podcast. Make sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode.

Do you struggle with excess distraction and overstimulation? Do you feel like your faith has grown shallow? We live in a culture of ever-increasing distraction, and the deeper our distraction, the more shallow our faith will become. So what can we do about it?

In today’s episode, Justine discusses this distraction issue in our culture (because it’s worse than we think) and how it’s one of the greatest threats to us having a deep life of faith. She also provides some guidance on how to overcome the noise and overstimulation to invite space and margin in your day-to-day life to experience more of God.

Today I stumbled across another "that" Christian girl video, which didn't sit well with me. It got me thinking back to my struggle with self-improvement/self-help Christianity and how it led me down a path entirely focused on myself.

The "that" Christian girl content is often accompanied by phrases like "become the best version of yourself," I want to unpack why I think this idea can be a slipper slope for those of us who struggle with becoming some idealistic Christian girl.

I hope this episode encourages you in your walk with the Lord.

What does it mean to idolize an ideal? How does that manifest itself in our lives? How do we spot the idols in the day to day?
I used to spend a combined 10 minutes with God, and treated it like a box I had to check, but would go and spend hours pursuing this ideal version of myself and my life. I let my time with the Lord become superficial and secondary, and the desires of my life were primary and that was very apparent in how I spent my time.
I went live on my Instagram to unpack this a little further and address any blindspots I might have missed. Watch that video here.

I'm so excited to be back behind the mic chatting with you guys!

Can Christianity coexist with self-help culture? A question I cover in today’s podcast episode!

Back in college, I was consumed by self-help culture and personal development content. I wanted to be the best version of myself, be the healthiest me I could be. This pursuit only led me farther away from Jesus and more and more self-centered.

It turns out that self-help culture consequently creates a self-focused and self-driven mentality that often leads us away from the cross of Christ. While we can, in good-faith, have Biblical conversations about personal development topics, I think we should be careful how much time and energy we put into bettering ourselves.

There are three habits that are currently changing my life.

These habits are not cookie-cutter, but rather, unique to my individual life. I've discovered what works for me and my family in regards to paying off debt, spending time studying my Bible, as well as keeping my house clean.

These three habits cover stewarding our finances, spiritual walk, and home.

I created this 4 step formula for creating a productive and sustainable morning routine for Christian women, moms, and the like who struggle with enjoying their mornings AND ensuring we are using our time effectively. There are multiple ways we can go about our morning routines, but for me I felt like most women who do these four things, have the most successful mornings. I want my mornings to be simple, productive, sustainable, and enjoyable.

So, I created this easy-to-remember 4 step formula [routine] so you can build out your perfect morning routine too!

Oftentimes we as Christians struggle with the parts of our faith that are considered gray areas. The non-essentials of the Christian faith.

Have you ever felt unsure about a topic such as yoga, getting a tattoo, dietary choices such as veganism, or whether you can have a glass of wine at a dinner party? Have you ever asked, 'where is the line drawn' or 'how do I know if I am right or wrong' or 'I am doing something sinful'? Then this episode is for you!

I cover four core questions. What are disputed matters? Why are they not inherently sinful? Why are they discretionary convictions? How should Christians respond to each other’s individual opinions and convictions?

St. Augustine once said, “In Essentials Unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things Charity.”

I got Facebook when I was 14 years old, Instagram when I was 16, and Snapchat shortly after that. After over 10 years of being on social media, I finally decided to quit for good. While there are many, many reasons I came to this conclusion, I share 10 with you today.

Quitting social media has been one of the best decisions I have made this year, and I can’t wait to see how my life changes for the better without the constant distraction, comparison, and addiction.

I don’t have any social media, but I would LOVE to hear from you.
