In September 2019, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Family members had heard nothing from them for months, but the children’s parents never reported the minors missing. Law enforcement visited the home of JJ and Tylee’s mother, Lori Vallow, that November to perform a welfare check on the children. Authorities later located Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, in Hawaii, where police finally arrested Vallow in February 2020 — months before investigators found JJ and Tylee’s remains on Daybell’s property. Are Vallow and Daybell responsible for the children’s deaths? Did they have anything to do with the mysterious deaths of Daybell’s first wife, Tammy, and Vallow’s estranged husband, Charles? Stay with us as we remember the victims, JJ and Tylee, and discuss what we know so far about Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell.

On May 16th, 1937, at around 6pm, a woman in her late 20s left a dance hall in Paris and walked quickly toward a bus stop. About 25 minutes later, she entered the metro station and took a seat in an empty first class car while the other passengers crammed into the second-class cars. When the car arrived at the next station forty-five seconds later, the doors opened on a crime scene: the woman, Laetitia Toureaux, sat slouched in her seat, bleeding heavily with a nine-inch dagger buried to its hilt in her neck. The woman died before reaching the hospital and wasn’t able to name her attacker, leaving the Parisian police with a perplexing locked room mystery on their hands. Why was Laetitia killed? Was her murder an assassination? Was she a spy for the Italian government? Listen to join the discussion!

Starring George C. Scott, 'The Changeling' (1980) is one of the most acclaimed and terrifying horror films of all time. As frightening as the movie is, the true story of the house that inspired it is even creepier. 'The Changeling' is based on the paranormal events Russell Hunter supposedly experienced while living in an old home in Denver, Colorado, in the late 1960s. Did he really live through a haunting that would go on to inspire a horror movie? Did Hunter barely survive his ghost-infested house, or did he make it all up? Stay with us as we take a closer look at the true story that inspired 'The Changeling.'

In the late 1980s, Don Decker was interviewed on the national television show, “Unsolved Mysteries,” for being known as “Rainman,” a man who could actually make it rain indoors, and the case is still a mystery to police in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Was Don Decker possessed by a demonic force? How did he make rain appear out of thin air? If it were all just a hoax, how could one man get away with deceiving nine eyewitnesses, several of which were police officers? Stay with us as we explore the haunting of Don Decker.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but for some, it’s an equally terrifying time of year. On December 6th, 1959, neighbors in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles awoke to the sound of Judye Perelson screaming and pounding on their door with blood-slicked hands. When police arrived on the scene at the Perelson's house, they found Lillian Perelson dead on the bed and her husband, Harold Perelson, also dead from a massive drug overdose — an apparent suicide. But even after Harold Perelson was long gone and the surviving Perelson family members had moved across the country, their home stayed empty for decades. Though it’s passed through a few different owners over the years, there are rumors that the house is more than just a memorial to that tragic December night in 1959 — some say it’s haunted. Join us as we take a tour of the Los Feliz Murder Mansion.

Belle Gunness (also known as Lady Bluebeard, The LaPorte Black Widow, The Mistress of Murder Farm, and Hell’s Belle) was probably one of America’s most prolific serial killers. She might have killed between 25 and 40 people, including women and children, at the turn of the 20th century. Rumors circulated that Lady Bluebeard didn’t actually die in a mysterious fire and most likely faked her death. Did she die in the fire? Did she murder all those people? And did she set the fire to cover her escape from LaPorte? Join us as we explore the mysterious case of the Mistress of Murder Farm.

The Ouija board came out of the American 19th century obsession with spiritualism. However, Ouija boards are seen today as dangerous objects of the occult, rather than the “wonderful” communication devices they were first created to be. This is, in large part, because for the past 130 years, people have been asking Ouija boards questions, and they’ve been answering. For some, what these talking boards say is the undeniable truth. That’s exactly why the Ouija board has played a crucial role in some of the most chilling crimes over the years. Join us as we discuss incredibly bizarre and violent real crimes connected to Ouija boards.

In the 1950s, wrestler Jack Adkisson created his alter ego, Fritz Von Erich, and began what would become a very successful career in the sport. Tragedy, however, struck in 1959, when Jack's six-year-old son died in a bizarre electrical accident. This terrible event would only be the beginning of the so-called Von Erich Family curse. In the years that followed, illness, injuries, depression, drug addiction, and suicide would plague all of Jack’s remaining sons until only one child survived. Can it really be just a horrible happenstance that Fritz Von Erich outlived 5 of his 6 children? If there was a curse, what could he possibly have done to bring it upon himself and his family? Can fame and fortune instead be blamed for the athletes’ deaths? Stay with us as we explore the mysterious and deadly curse of the Von Erich family.

In Austin, Texas, a killer who became known as the “Servant Girl Annihilator” was responsible for the deaths of eight people between late 1884 and Christmas Eve 1885. Attacking victims in their beds and then dragging them outside to mutilate their bodies, the murderer eluded police, private investigators, and civilian mobs who took to the streets of newly settled Austin. He has been called America’s first serial killer, and his crimes remain unsolved to this day. Some investigators believe that before he prowled the foggy streets of London, Jack the Ripper struck first in the Texas Hill Country. Could the Annihilator and Jack the Ripper be one and the same? Stay with us as we discuss the case of the Servant Girl Annihilator.

In chapter two of our fictional mini-series, Small Town Spirits, Andie tries to recover from the voice she heard in the attic on her first day of work. She makes some new friends (maybe — she's still not sure about the standoffish but very attractive Emmet) and learns about the town's troubling and macabre history. Could the spirit of a murdered college student be haunting the building just across the square? How will she find out who the voice in the attic belongs to?

Rosemary’s Baby is considered one of the most cursed films of all time. Actor Sidney Blackmer (who played coven leader Roman Castevet) once said on set, “No good will come of all this ‘Hail Satan’ business.” Was the movie actually cursed? Did thinking, writing, speaking, and filming scenes all about the devil invite a dark energy onto the set and into the lives of the people involved? From illness, tension among the crew, and divorce to “accidental” death and grisly murder, it sure seems like it. Join us on Straight-Up Enigmas as we explore the curse of Rosemary’s Baby.

Welcome to our first quarantine playlist! The idea of this episode was to help relieve some of that boredom you may be feeling while you’re sitting at home in self-isolation. I also wanted to reintroduce some of our earlier episodes, then make some recommendations for other shows that I think would be a good add-on or compliment to ours. For our first playlist, we'll explore a couple of our older episodes on sleep paralysis! Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move or speak. One of the more frightening elements of sleep paralysis is seeing dark, shadowy figures floating toward you or hulking in the corner of your bedroom. Science has found a way to explain away the appearance of shadow people during sleep paralysis episodes, but what does it have to say about those who have seen shadow people during their waking hours? In one of our sleep paralysis episodes (featured during our 13 Nights of Halloween mini-series), we hear a short but shocking sleep paralysis experience from Carlie, one of our long-time listeners.

William Desmond Taylor was arguably the most famous director in Hollywood in the early 1920s, working behind the camera for Paramount Pictures on around 60 movies and acting in 27 more. He worked with some of the greatest actors and actresses of the Silent Era, but it was the fame of Taylor’s shocking, unsolved murder that would ultimately overshadow his cinematic career. Who killed William Desmond Taylor? Join us as we explore this perplexing unsolved murder on Straight-Up Enigmas.

Believe me — Laurelton, Missouri was not where I’d planned to spend my summer vacation. But, as they usually do, things changed. I found myself living with my aunt, Mara, and working part-time at a women’s clothing boutique on the quaint and picturesque town square. I liked my job — I even made some new friends. The only not-so-great thing was the ghosts. Why was I the only one who could see them? Were they trying to warn me about something? About the dark, mysterious power I could feel radiating from the creepy old Masonic Lodge, orphanage, asylum and winery on the hill?
I’m Jaden, the host of Small Town Spirits. This exclusive content is available through the Straight-Up Enigmas podcast feed. Starting April 14th, find all our spooky tales about the ghosts of Laurelton by searching Straight Up Enigmas on your favorite podcast app.

Hello, enigmatic listeners! I wanted to check in with you all since we’ve had so many changes and announcements lately.
First, I wanted to say thank you so much for supporting our sponsors. It’s been extremely exciting to see our little show get these sponsorship opportunities. I appreciate any effort from you all to show our sponsors that we have engaged listeners (things like using promo codes and downloading apps) -- that being said, I know things are pretty uncertain and chaotic right now. Any little bit of encouragement you send our way makes my day. I love hearing that you’re writing reviews for us on Apple Podcasts or just spreading the word to friends.
Second, I’ve decided to start uploading quarantine playlists to the feed on our off-weeks. I know a lot of us now have a lot more time on our hands, so I’m going to re-release some of our earlier episodes, along with some commentary from me and a list of episodes from other podcasts that I think compliment our content. I’ll also add some of the shows I personally have been listening to lately.
Third, we have so many great shows in the Straight-Up Strange Network! I love the variety in our spooky family, and I really want to share all these amazing podcasts with you. I’ll start uploading trailers and promos from some of the creators in our network every once in a while, just so you can get a taste for their different voices and styles.
Fourth, you may not know this about me, but I love writing. I majored in English, and I miss the creativity that comes from making my own original content. To supplement our regular, non-fiction episodes, I’m going to publish a new fiction series called Small Town Spirits. A trailer and teaser are coming soon, so stay tuned on that!
Again, I appreciate everything you enigmas do to help support our show. Some of you have listened from the very first episode -- our style has changed a lot since then, but I hope we can keep creating creepy content that you all enjoy. Thank you and we’ll see you on April 7th for our next regularly scheduled episode of Straight-Up Enigmas.

Ted Bundy murdered my dad’s friend's sister in 1974 while on his reign of terror in Utah. At least, Bundy admitted to killing her just before his execution, but police were never able to locate her body. That’s the topic of just one episode on Straight-Up Enigmas, a podcast to explore the unexplained. Spine-tingling, supernatural stories, historical mysteries and true criminal cases are all things to expect when you tune in to our show. We discuss the mysterious deaths of the Jamison Family, share terrifying true stories from real people about sleep paralysis and explore Cleopatra’s missing tomb. I’m Jaden McKell, and I’m the host of Straight-Up Enigmas. Our bite-sized, bi-weekly episodes focus on the world’s strangest mysteries -- sacred and sonic geometry, the murder of Karen Silkwood, Turkmenistan’s Door to Hell, the curse of the Omen -- and much more. Celebrated every year on March 8th, International Women's Day acknowledges the social, economic, and political achievements of women around the world. We’ve made a lot of progress over the years, but there’s still a long way to go. In many parts of the world, women are still less likely to own land, a business, or attend school. According to the United Nations, more than half of the world’s poorest people are women. International Women’s Day attempts to bring women equal access to rights and opportunities like education, protection under the law, and freedom from violence. I’m shocked during my research of true crime cases in America alone that involve female victims. Around the world today, organizations, communities, and individuals have organized events celebrating the achievements of women everywhere. I thought one small way I can recognize the accomplishments of women around me is by sharing the incredible shows of female podcasters! According to a November 2019 article from Quartz, an online global news community, only one-in-three chart topping podcast hosts are women. There are so many amazing podcasts hosted by dedicated, hard-working women just doing what they love. As a way to celebrate women around the world today, please take a few minutes to enjoy these short trailers from podcasts created, hosted, edited, and supported by women. You might just find your new favorite show, and I know all of these lovely ladies would appreciate having their voices heard!

At 9:30 p.m. on May 22, 1992, Huntsville police were notified by the 911 dispatcher of a possible burglary in progress with an injured victim at the scene. The location was Boulder Circle, an affluent neighborhood nestled among the mountains in Huntsville, Alabama. Investigators would discover the lifeless body of local, well-liked ophthalmologist, Dr. Jack Wilson. As homicide detectives began combing Jack Wilson’s home for clues that day, none of them realized they were about to become involved in the most notorious, shocking murder case in Huntsville's history. While many aspects of the Jersey Devil legend seem too fantastical to believe, there have been hundreds of sightings of a strange creature in South Jersey over the years. Is it possible that a rare, undiscovered species has taken up residence in there? Are all of the sightings hoaxes, or are people simply mistaking some other kind of animal for a demon? Or, as Harry Leeds, a former mayor and direct descendant of Mother Leeds claims, does a devil still stalk the Pine barrens to this day?

On November 16, 2013, the bodies of two adults and a child were found in Red Oak, Oklahoma. The bodies were identified as those of Bobby, Sherilyn and Madyson Jamison, who were reported missing in 2009. The environment in which the corpses had been in made it impossible to identify their causes of death; however, despite the advanced state of decomposition, the coroner was able to identify a hole in Bobby’s skull, possibly from a bullet. Numerous theories have come up over the years although nothing has ever been substantiated and no arrests have ever been made in this case. What happened to the Jamison family? Since ancient times, sages and spiritual teachers have applied meaning to shapes. In these shapes were believed to be the secret to life, a unifying presence or force that could explain the nature of the universe. Nikola Tesla himself stated, “If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have the key to the universe.” Do certain numbers really hold the answer to all of life’s secrets? Join us this week as we discuss the mystery of sacred and sonic geometry.

The concept of Hell exists in almost every religion on the planet. From the fiery pits of Christian Hell to the shadowy pagan dimensions and complex Asian underworlds, Hell is generally thought to be a nether world where the wicked souls of the dead are sent to suffer everlasting punishment, misery and torture. While versions of the inferno differ from one belief system to the next, most cultures agree that it can be accessed by portals pockmarking our earth’s surface. Located in the Karakum Desert, the Darvaza Gas Crater, which has been on fire for almost 50 years, is believed to be a door to Hell. What exactly is a fiery inferno doing in the middle of a desert in Turkmenistan? Stay with us as we discuss this fiery, mysterious inferno.

In celebration of Halloween, and with the help of two of my sister podcasts from Straight Up Strange Productions, you’re in store for a unique show tonight. This episode ties together each of our three, very different podcasts and styles to cover one overlapping, and relatively dark topic: the phenomenon of crimes committed while sleepwalking (and not just any crimes, but heinous, sometimes fatal ones.) First up is a fictionalized storytelling by Jennifer from Haunted Happenstance, then followed by some historical true crime facts by yours truly. This is then followed by another factual spin from the sleep/dream and science side from Meranda of All Things Dreams. One spring night in a second-floor bedroom of an old creaky house in Benton, Maine, Alan Linnell lay terrified as he felt a presence sit on his bed. He then felt something cold touch his arm. That was just one of dozens of strange events the Linnell family experienced over 13 years beginning in 1964, a year after the family bought the home. Our discussion will feature a personal experience from two of our long-time listeners at the notorious bridge, including a strange photo taken of a couple friends that night. Maritime history is full of stories of ghost ships and sea serpents. One of the most famous of these mysteries is the legendary Dutch freighter, S.S. Ourang Medan. According to the myth, a strange radio message was received by numerous ships traveling along the Straits of Malacca in 1847. Those that received this message, an SOS, insisted that it went: “All officers, including the captain, are dead. Lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead. ...I die.” Rescuers on the scene found the ship completely unharmed but the entire crew, including the dog, dead with terrified expressions. Join us as we dive into the depths surrounding this maritime mystery.

You know that creeping sensation you get when you think someone's watching you? Several scientific studies have found evidence to suggest that our minds have a mysterious capacity to sense what's happening around us, even if we’re not actually "seeing" it. But, is it all only in our minds? Do we have a sixth sense, something that tells us whether a stranger is near, watching us? Tune in to hear a true and terrifying story from Shailee, one of our long-time listeners, titled, “Someone Was Watching Me Sleep.”

Nurses are supposed to help those under their care. They’re supposed to heal and protect us. Maybe that’s why so many of these individuals get away with murder for so long. No one suspects these caregivers of being capable of such heinous crimes. While history is littered with medical professionals who murdered their patients, on this episode, we discuss one nurse who is considered the most prolific serial killer in the history of peacetime Germany and perhaps the world.

The legend of the “Croglin Grange Vampire” first appeared in the 1890s, written by English author Augustus Hare. Hare claimed that he was sharing a “really extraordinary” story from the family of his good friend, Captain Fisher. The tale takes place in Cumberland, England, but when it was discovered that no place called Croglin Grange actually existed in Cumberland, people began to question the validity of Hare’s tale. Is Croglin Grange based on a real location? Did the undead really attack the tenants living there? Stay with us this week as we unpack the legend of the Croglin Grange Vampire.

In the summer of 1974, in the dunes of Provincetown, a coastal resort community on Cape Cod, a teenage girl walking her dog discovered the badly decomposed corpse of a young woman. The woman, eventually named the "Lady of the Dunes," was found lying face down on a beach towel, nude, with a bandanna and a pair of jeans folded beneath her head.
