Life is being decoded for many people right now. Somebody you know may need a lifesaver thrown out as a lifeline. Mental Health is being tested for so many people right now. For example, water safety advocates who would normally be advocating water safety are finding themselves looking for something to do or a way to communicate their message and programs.

Life is by far not normal. But, It may become our new normal as they say!

In this episode, I lay out my world as a water safety advocate and a podcast living through a time that we have never seen and I pray we never see again. However, I'm thinking of all of you that really have been hit hard by the events of this world.

Today's podcast we are talking with Nicole Nusshag. A Mother Explains Her Experience between Mommy and Me Swim Lessons vs Infant Swim Lessons. She is a mother who started her daughter off in a mommy and me swim lessons and then learned about infant swim. After learning about infant swim lessons and getting her daughter involved and skilled. She moved to Arizona and realized that she still had the need from these lessons and there was nobody around that was able to teach so she took it into her own hand and became an Infant Swim Instructor.

Listen to this episode as Nicole a Mother explains the difference between these two types of classes and what you should consider and why?

Rick: "There's a lot more that goes into this, then just say going down to the local YMCA and learning how to swim.""Nicole: As soon as a child is old enough to roll over on land, they're old enough to be able to be taught to roll over in the water."

Rick: A Mommy and Me Class - So a 30 minute class on individual instruction with the instructor. How much time was the instructor actually spending with you and your baby?

Nicole:One-on-one? Maybe two minutes if that.

Rick:So, you're paying for a 30-minute class and getting two minutes' worth of instruction.

Nicole: But with me, it's 10 minutes. I'm working the entire time, the child, we'll be tired after the 10 minutes like they're done. And there are some kids that, they're done at say seven or eight minutes, they're just done and we have to call it. It was a good productive lesson that day, and the reason why the lessons are so short is that they get tired.

Rick: Welcome to DW nation, everyone. This is your host, Rick Kauffman with the drowning warrior podcast. We've got a guest here with us today. We're actually going to be talking to an infant swim specialist actually with Aqua babies survival swim school. And this is Nicole Nusshag and she is in Vail or otherwise a suburb of Tucson, Arizona. So if you're familiar with the Tucson, Arizona, that area, I'm sure you're aware of the climate, the type of homes, everything like that. So it's summer, I would say almost all year except for today. Okay. So welcome Nicole and welcome to the drowning warrior podcast here today. Nicole: Thank you. Thanks for having me. I'm happy to be here. Rick: Well, we're happy to have you. And actually we kind of met just kind of live, give a how we met you ran across one of our previous podcasts and then started looking into things and found me on social media and found a couple of our, you found our Facebook community, which is DW nation, which is a private community there. And you've engaged with us in that area. And then we'll you and I jumped on a really nice phone call with your daughter and as your daughter was the leader of that phone conversation, we had a really, really good time and I learned a lot about you and vice versa. So why don't you just take a moment, let our listeners know about a little bit about your background and how and what we're going to get into this survival swimming, you know, a conversation, but how you really got involved in that. Nicole: Okay. Yeah. So, Nicole: I grew up swimming around pools and lakes and rivers. I grew up in Washington state, so there's water all over the place there. And that was just, that was part of our lifestyle was being in the water in the summertime. And when I had my first child in 2015, that's when it really started setting in the dangers of water and children. And I wanted to make sure that, that my child, now, you know, I have more than one now, but, but I wanted to make sure that they were going to be comfortable around the water, be able to swim. And kind of have the same lifestyle that I had, being able to enjoy the water in the hot weather or any time. So I started looking into getting her into swim lessons Nicole: Early on. She was four months old at the time when I,

How many of these ladders do we see left in the pool with nobody swimming?

We are talking with Brandon Love. He's a father of Bentley Maverick Love (named after Maverick in the movie Top Gun). Brandon along with so many other parents asks the question of how can this happen to so many children, well Brandon shares a Father's Story in today's podcast. Click the play button above to listen to the full story or read our transcript below and go to the section as it is timed stamped to take you right to that part you want to listen to.

His son is just like any other little boy, full of life and curious searching for things to do and to get into. Just like so many others, they just don't know what is dangerous to them. They have no fear and will unlock a door or get out of a house by any means they can to get into the things that they can have fun with all while you are in the house unaware of what they are doing. It happens to all parents at some point in time. However, for the majority of the parent without a devastating accident. A Father's Story, don't let Brandon's story become yours. Listen to what he has to say!

You can connect with Brandon via his personal Facebook page here is the link to connect with him https://www.facebook.com/brandough.love

Brandon mentions Melanie Brindleyley and her program in this podcast as they have teamed up to work together on water safety and drowning prevention programs in their communities, here is the link to their website and learn more. https://www.swimsafety.org/

Rick (00:00): Welcome everyone. Hey, this is Rick Kauffman your host with the drowning warrior podcast and this is DW nation. We are speaking with Brandon Love. You're gonna want to tune in and listen to this episode because Brandon's going to share with you this involved his son and a Brandon, if I remember correctly. It is. It also involved a nephew or a cousins, a child too. Is that correct? Brandon (00:24): Yes, Sir my nephew. Rick (00:26): What I'd like to do is just welcome Brandon. Brandon, welcome to the show here today. Brandon (00:31): Thank you. Having me Rick (00:32): Telling. Our stories are really, really important. I know many, many of us and I think you're a lot like I am. We want people to understand that our children were just regular everyday children. I mean there really nothing different between you as a parent and your children and all the other families and children that are out there running around today. I mean, would you agree with that assessment, Brandon? Brandon (00:55): Totally. I mean it's not like we have a, Brandon (00:58): when I was set apart from anybody, we're all pretty much the same. Rick (01:02): I know for myself and as parents we never would have believed that, uh, we would be part of this group in this club. So Brandon, why don't you just take a moment here and tell us a little bit about your son, the type of boy he was. Tell us, tell us in your words as much as you would like to let us know, tell us a little bit about what happened. Brandon (01:23): Okay. Well my son's name was Bentley Maverick Love uh, yes, he got his middle name from the movie top gun and it was very, very outgoing. I mean he only lived to be two years old, but I could tell like he would have had just a full life happiness, you know, he cleared any time grandma or his brother or me or anybody was upset. He could tell and he would just give it to latch on to you and he would do it again Brandon (01:54): to at least get you to smile. And then he would start laughing. Where do you want your smile? He was very strong, very athletic. At two years old. He blew me away when we were playing catch with a baseball, throw a baseball, head your hands up and he was going to hit you with him. And he was not afraid to stand up for himself whenever his brother got to picking on him a little-bit Brandon (02:15): and now he was just extremely outgoing and I could...

We are talking to two very brave people, Sarah Watkins and her Father Bart Watkins, that stepped up and their training took over and responded to a situation. So I would like to ask you would you know what to do if a 5-Year-Old Girl Drowns in a pool that you were attending while it was guarded by lifeguards? This is what every parent with children that can or even can't swim needs to know.

"Listen to Sarah and her father Bart tell their full story of the events of this day in a public lifeguarded pool with others standing around. It's what you need to know and check what you think you may know how to keep your children safe."

I would like to thank our sponsor of this episode Safeswimminglessons.com. If you would like to learn what it will take to teach the little ones to swim and to self-rescue check out their website, The program is closing on March 15th to save 50% on their program.

Let me tell you a quick story about a 5-year-old girl who drowned and a daughter and her father that took action. At the time Sarah and her daughter were enjoying swimming in the pool while her father Bart was swimming laps in the indoor pool. Sarah noticed what was happening when she saw the lifeguards just standing around, talking and pointing at the little girl and asked if anyone has checked on her?. Sarah was getting more and more upset at their lack of ability to respond to this situation in the manner that she was trained when she was a lifeguard and an instructor.

Then the bottom fell out from under everyone and Sarah knew she had to take action and started to perform CPR, as they just weren't doing it right until she could go on no more. Sarah then ran to get her father, Bart to take over CPR. This meant she couldn't keep going,  performing CPR can take a lot out of you after what seemed to be a long time and she just couldn't go on. As you can imagine, this situation was going from bad to worse and becoming a desperate situation but they weren't ready to give up. They had to keep going to save this little girl. She was transported to the hospital where she didn’t survive this drowning even after all they had done.

Earlier the girl was wearing a puddle jumper similar to the picture. She had removed this life vest (Puddle Jumper) while her grandfather went to the restroom. She then entered the pool not wearing her puddle jumper. For children of this age group accustomed to wearing these types of PFD's, they do not understand that this is what keeps them afloat.

Then we discovered, after this drowning, we had started to ask questions and they were surprised at what we found out.

At that point, everything changed for Bart and Sarah!

They discovered that this facility was:

Unprepared to handle an event like this little 5-year-old girl The rescue equipment was not present or and even their AED machine was locked up in the office That they do not perform the type of training that would prepare them for this. Plus, not to mention that they spent time on their cell phones and talking with one another instead of scanning and watching the patrons in the pool

Because what Bart and Sarah had discovered, after this drowning, they had started to ask questions and were surprised at what they found out.

After this event, it has energized Bart and Sarah to take action in their community and begin to educate parents and children of the dangers around water and these pools

If it was going to happen then they were going to have to get involved in their community that is based in a low-income area, as the education is just not available to the public

Sarah started to reach out to others in the water safety and drowning prevention community via social media, plus sharing their story. They both now have begun to hear from so many others that have had similar stories of non-fatal drownings and others that ended up just like this little 5-year-old girl. So Sad

Rory, given his Last Ride A Hero and a Warrior to so many.

Rory Antley Sheffield was born a firecracker.

Rory was walking by 9 months and never stopped once he got vertical.  He was the joy of his family and Daddy named him his “Little Warrior”.  He loved firetrucks and would watch numerous videos of them going out on calls.  One of his favorite videos built a firetruck from the tires up and he could name each part.

Listen to this episode to hear how Rory is just like any other normal toddler that we know walking around our house and yours.

On August 17, 2016, their family, along with 3 other families, rented a home in Concan, Tx.  They had planned a fun, relaxing vacation with friends.  On Friday, August 19th, after returning from the Frio River, everyone started getting ready for dinner.  Rory slipped away and decided to go swimming.  Only he didn’t know how to swim and his lifejacket had been removed to dry.

"Within minutes of my friend calling 911, a volunteer fireman heard the call and was just minutes away."

They could have done nothing after his death. Yet Rory was too special and God had bigger plans for him and his family. They wanted to save other families from their nightmare.

The family wanted to support the volunteer fire departments and first responders that Rory so loved.  So Rory the Warrior, Inc was started in honor of their little Warrior, Rory Antley Sheffield.

Watch to short video as our tribute to Rory and their mission

In today's podcast, we're talking to a mother that on the surface is just like any other mother who is walking this earth. There isn't a thing that she wouldn't do for her children. She would go out of her way to make sure that no harm would ever come to them. Just as any parent would do, until June 15, 2019. When her son Linkin wondered off and opened a gate to a pool and fell in the water. He was estimated to be in the water for 5-10 minutes. When the first responders showed up and start lifesaving efforts on Linkin. They transported Linkin to the hospital and that's when Linkin's extremely hard journey of recovery started.

To hear the full story you'll need to click the play button and listen to Jennifer tell her story that any mother would never want to have to live through or even have to share.

You can help Linkin in his recovery, Jennifer has set up Linkin's Go-Fund-Me Account

As Jennifer shares her story, she's going to let you know just the kind of boy Linkin is. That he is just like any other little boy, he is curious, into things, will to take all the chances and risks because to him and to every other little boy, it's something new or it's something that he wants or wants to do.

As a Father of children and grandchildren, I know that every time I see a young child like Linkin that they are no different than he is. Jennifer now knows this first hand.

She has turned this tragedy into a mission of hope and to share Linkin's Miracle in the Making to the world. She also understands that it could have been a matter of seconds to a minute or 2 and the outcome would have been completely different.

This has turned into her cause to share with other parents in her community, around the state of Texas as Texas is one of the leading States in drownings and non-fatal drownings. Because parents just don't believe that it can happen, just as she believed before that date that we share in common, June 15th. We both know how fast it can happen with two different outcomes.

"Let me tell you a quick story..." Click the play button to listen to this story. I was a truck driver, it was Thanksgiving day in 2013 when I was left sitting and not getting home.

My wife is disabled from a horse-riding accident. I had to let my business go so I could provide insurance.

I was driving over the road for a trucking company and was getting home for 2 days every 2 weeks

I was left hanging in Lynchburg Va. being told that I would have a load to get me home in time for Thanksgiving dinner by 3 pm.

However, someone forgot to tell the company that I was going to be there Thanksgiving morning and they were closed.

"Then something happened that changed my life forever..."

When I was left sitting and forgotten nobody cared.

They promised me they would get me home.

I began to research on the internet some statistics on drowning.

Listen to this complete episode to get the whole story on that Thanksgiving Day November 2013

I want to thank everyone that had the opportunity to attend the live group call that we had this past Tuesday night November 19th at 9 pm EST. We had 27 people on the group call and received 20 emails from others that were not able to attend. I want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to learn about our platform, our vision and what I feel is the largest value add that we can bring and that is our testing of content through our sponsored posts to drive traffic to bring the cost per click PPC down to be effective.

Graphic #1

Our Vision as it is shown in this graphic above shows that our goal is to save 185,000 lives from fatal drowning and over 1 Million lives from nonfatal drowning by June 15th, 2029. In order to accomplish that we'll need to reach a minimum of 100 million people, this is built on the Know, Like and Trust factor. You can see this in the graphic. I go over our vision in much more detail and much much more...

We are offering a BETA test group at all levels. I also go over that in the call so click above to listen to that in more detail

I go over some data on an ad set campaign that I had been running for the past couple of days at the time of the call. This is important because we'll be testing a lot of different stories that we have covered and more stories to come that will allow us to match that with your message and test those against a targeted audience. Plus educational messages along with information all to help get water safety and drowning prevention awareness out to those who need to know what you have to say or how you provide a solution to a particular problem that was covered in the content. The main focus here is to keep the cost down while reaching that largest audience possible while driving traffic for the result that you are looking for. We'll be sharing these tests with our members on future calls and in the member's area along with our private Facebook group. Take a look at the graphic 2 and 3

This is Robert. Would you believe that the hospital told the family to let their son go and turn off life support? Listen and share this episode as Robert's father Will explains. Follow his story on Facebook

We are talking with Will Boytim as he shares the story of his son Robert who suffered a non-fatal drowning. Click on the play button and tune in as you'll want to hear. Then hit the share button as many of us can create the change but just one will not move the needle.

Important note there may be some trigger moments if you have lived through a drowning or a nonfatal drowning in this episode.

It was Feb 28, 2018, that changed their lives forever. Their precious 3-year-old Robert suffered a non-fatal drowning. After an hour of CPR by his oldest sister, his grandmother, Willis PD and EMS they got a heartbeat back. The Road to Recovery began.

"In our experience, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the most powerful tool for combating hypoxic/anoxic brain injury from drowning"

In this case, if you do not know or haven't heard about Hyperbaric oxygen therapy. It's a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, a hazard of scuba diving. Other conditions treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy include serious infections, bubbles of air in your blood vessels, and wounds that won't heal as a result of diabetes or radiation injury. - There is just one part I believe that they leave out as Will explained that this treatment is not recognized as a method of treatment for non-fatal drowning victims by most people in the medical community. Again listen to this episode to hear Will explain this.

To learn more about hyperbaric oxygen therapy Will has HBOT Research on their website with links to valuable information https://drownedbaby.org/hbot-research/

To follow Roberts's story and you can connect with them on Facebook also on their website at Drownedbaby.org. Also, Will talked about the important work of Rory The Warrior program as they support the volunteer fire departments and first responders that Rory so loved.  So they started Rory the Warrior, Inc in honor of their little Warrior, Rory Antley Sheffield. Connect and also support their project here - https://rorythewarrior.org/

Trish teaching children this life skill how to float

In this episode, we're talking with Trish Muehlstein of Tiny Turtles Swim School and Trish swim lessons. What Trish does is truly magical when it comes to teaching the little ones the life skill that all children need to float. Listen to the full episode to get Trishes story, just click the play button to start.

Let me just say this about what she does. I learned the TRUTH about drowning the hard way so you don't have to. I lost my 3-year-old daughter to a drowning, 8 feet in front of a lifeguard. If my daughter had this skill that Trish and others teach, it would have allowed her to be seen #1 and then to have the opportunity to be saved #2. She would be here today and that's the TRUTH!

Trish shares her personal passion for how she starts in Northern Virginia as a competitive swimmer that took her to Florida for college and now she is living her dream teaching children how to swim and save themselves. She is also a health and wellness coach and understands the importance of living a healthy life but most importantly the benefits of the water and swimming long term.

You don't have to take it from me or my story. However, my podcast is filled with others who share the same story and understand the TRUTH when it comes to this life skill. These lessons just do not swim lessons, they are a life skill that will save your child's life if they were to fall in the pool or an open body of water.

Trish shares a story in this episode of a child that was missing on a lake and was found floating over 45 minutes later. That child now walks this earth because of this skill. So make sure to listen to this episode to get the full story

About Trish

Trish has been teaching children swimming lessons for over 14 years and LOVES every minute of it!! She's an Aquarius and needs to be around the water, it keeps her personally balanced.  Trish was on a swim team at age 5 and continued competition swimming until she went away to college.

She is a proud mother of 4 beautiful children...who all went through the same swim program when they were babies.  So she knows how it feels as a parent to sit on the deck and watch your precious angel go through these swimming lessons.

She has many incredible stories of children that have been taught, accidentally falling in the water and then rotating onto their back till their parents could retrieve them safely.

She's passionate that EVERY child should receive swimming lessons as soon as they start crawling.  It is her way of making a difference and giving a child a life long skill :)  Trish believes that swimming builds confidence, body awareness, self-esteem, teaches self-control and patience.

In today's episode, I'm talking about an accident that took place in a river just down the road from my home. You read the title right and I'm sure you're asking the same questions I asked when I first had this come across my newsfeed as it was taking place. Before everyone rushes to judgment, let me say this. I was a parent who lost a child to drowning when she was 3 just 8 feet in front of a lifeguard. While both are very different but as a parent who has lost a child to drowning it's what we don't know "That is where we start". Drowning doesn't discriminate and it doesn't care what you know or what you don't know. With that being said Layers of protection in pools and open bodies of water and that includes rivers have to be in place. Know your risks and wear a life jacket that's age-appropriate.

I was a parent that said after his daughter drowned why I didn't know these things. Just as this mother and family didn't know. Yes, there are so many unanswered questions. I talk about many of these in this episode.

As of today Thursday, July 25, 2019, reports from people say the child had a life vest on however authorities aren't stating whether or not she did and no child or infant life vest was discovered. This drowning is under current investigation and we will be bringing some experts to follow up on this drowning as I believe that these happen more than most people may know.

There was a stainer down the river and this is where they were ejected from the canoe and the infant child also was ejected and the mother was unable to hold on and at that time the child went under the water and must have been caught in the swift current caused by the water level and the strainer.

The definition of a strainer is as follows.: An obstruction allows water to pass through but stops and holds objects such as boats and people. Bouncing twigs may indicate a partially submerged strainer. Many and most of the time these are down trees.

What is classified as a STRAINER

Now with that being said, You must understand the risks and dangers of the water you are navigating. Know where it is safe to get in and to get out of the water. That all people have the proper fitting USG ( U.S. Coast Guard) approved life jacket on and that must be for children and infants and if not present then you DO NOT ENTER THE WATER no matter what type of craft and waterway you are on that goes for rivers, lakes, oceans. these are considered open bodies of water that would also include ponds streams and retention ponds, drainage ditches anywhere that water may be.

Read and what the ABC and FOX 45 report

Melanie reached out to me Sunday to share this story to those who are following us. I felt it was important to do a special podcast today to honor with what she has created in her husband memory.

Please take the time to listen to this episode and Click Here to read the article. Melanie a dear friend that I had the opportunity to meet last year at the NDPA conference in Tampa and again we met up in New Orleans. The heroic efforts of her husband Ken saved a life of a boy swimming in the gulf off the coast of Florida who's life was saved. This day was known as Black Sunday 16 years ago. Many lives lost to rough water and rip currents. Know the risks and what to do before you go. Melanie has created the Ken Brindley Memorial Foundation (wise water safe swimmer) to promote water safety while raising funds to implement prevention measures, including vouchers for free swimming lessons and life jacket sharing stations. I want to honor her and her family as they remember her Husband and Father who gave so much so others can survive as she gives a voice to those who no longer have a voice

Melanie Brindley doesn’t think of her husband, who died 16 years ago after heroically saving a young boy from drowning. She is honoring his memory and his Good Samaritan personality as a determined advocate for water safety.

“Drowning is a world health epidemic,” Melanie said. “It crosses all ages and it doesn’t discriminate at all – for economics, color or race. Anyone can drown, but we say there are layers of protection that can help prevent it.”

Sharil has committed to showing up every day with a Facebook live titled Lifeguard Your Littles. Sharil's son Andrew had a nonfatal drowning when he was 4 years old on August 10, 2005. She had participated in mommy and me swim classes with her son. Feeling that these were enough to teach him how to swim. Until, following his 4th birthday, they signed him up for a field trip. After signing the paperwork and releases. She had found out this was to a public pool. Shortly after her son arrived she received a phone call that her son had drowned and that they were performing CPR.

In this episode of our weekly spotlight I'm talking with Jevon Marc Atkinson he attended the Olympics in 2004 and 2008 representing Jamaica. Let me say that Marc has a very interesting story that took him all the way to the Olympics. You'll have to listen to this episode so he can tell you in his words.

There are many years that separate Marc and I . (Let me just say I'm older but the better looking one LOL) However, with all joking aside. We realized that even though we grew up in different times and different countries with different challenges that we are so much alike. We both feel that it is the work that we put in when we were striving for something bigger than us. In the end, he is an Olympic swimmer and I'm a father who lost a daughter to a drowning. At the end of the day, we both realize that there are problems around us that we may have no control over. But there is one thing we do know. That is we can go to work with a goal in mind and accomplish whatever it is that you want.

Make sure to tune in to this episode as Marc will give you all great information as we share what may be things to come in the near future.

Photo of Christopher Courtesy of Deborah Tomlinson

Deborah shares her story and Christopher's Story on our podcast. Drowning Is Preventable. You'll want to listen to this episode as she tells you what happened to her son that was completely preventable if she would have just known of the risks. However, we as parents believe that we do what is right. We would have never known or could even imagine that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children under the age of 5 and the 2nd leading cause for children under 15

Deborah Writes - "On a beautiful June afternoon, my son Christopher died in our backyard pool because his mask, like those used for snorkeling and scuba diving, flooded, changing my life forever. This tragedy could have easily been averted had I been aware of certain guidelines. "

"These six years of childhood came to an abrupt end on that June afternoon and became the worst memory of my life. Imagine buying an accessory to enhance your child’s experience in the water, and it becoming the very thing that brings about tragedy. "

"Christopher learned to swim with the aid of a mask when he was four years old. He was initially scared to put his face in the water, but with the mask covering his eyes and nose, he quickly learned to swim. He became confident in the water. The mask kept water out of his eyes and nose and gave him a view of the underwater world. I purchased Christopher’s mask at a local pool supply store. I found it in the toy section along with the all the diving toys. It was packaged as appropriate for youth and made of cheap materials. There were no safety warnings or instructions with the mask. The potential dangers of the mask, much less the need to ensure a proper fit, did not even cross my mind. I therefore assumed that the mask was safe to use and every time that Christopher swam, he wore his mask."

Brooke Bennett BB Swim School at https://bbswimschool.com

Brooke Bennett, owner and operator of Brooke Bennett Swim School (BBSS) We will be talking with Brooke in this episode about these 3 topics.

Learn to swim at a early ageSwimming can help and prepare you for other sports"Dry Drowning" The Myth

Let me tell you - Drowning is the leading cause of death to children ages 1-4 and it's the 2nd leading cause of children 5-14 years-old. 88% of drownings happen under adult supervision..

Brooke was a water baby and started at a very young age. Her talent and determination was fueled by her grandfather who built Bennett a swimming pool and taught her to swim, a role model she still dedicates every race to. At the young age of 12, Bennett qualified for her first junior national cut and went on to win her first gold medal in the 800 meter freestyle at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. That same year, the U.S. Olympic Committee named Bennett the “Sports Woman of the Year.” After ultimately adding 14 U.S. champion titles to her record, Bennett continued her success, winning two gold medals, one in the 800 meter freestyle and another in the 400 meter freestyle, in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

Brooke's goal is to teach every child to be water safe. To give the platform to learn proper skill and allow them to flourish as a competitive swimmer.

- Learn to swim at an early age- To develop the skills and strength in swimming that will help you in other sports.

Brooke utilized her passion for sports as a sports broadcaster for Bright House Sports Network in Florida for 5 years. Just before Bennett became a mom, she stepped away to redirect her passion for the water and training again. Bennett devotes her time to teach children how to swim and be water safe through the Brooke Bennett Swim School.

And that's why she so passionate about "BB Swim School" because she knows it can help you to Learn to swim at a early age and to learn proper skill and allow them to flourish as a competitive swimmer too!

Pirates Bay Water Park Baytown Texas

Aquatics Operation Manager

We are talking with Journey Amos, she is the Aquatics Operation Manager with the City of Baytown Texas. A Rather large operation that employs 100's of lifeguard and staff that support the customer along with handling all the maintenance to maintaining the facility right down to the water quality to keep you safe so you can enjoy the water and all that has to offer.

Listen to today's episode to get the whole story and to understand the importance of haveing a "Culture of Safety".

Journey, just like so many other aquatic professionals got started young as a lifeguard and working her way up the ladder to where she manages community pools to provide lifeguards. To where is now today with the City of Baytown Tx.

We talk about the challenges to hire qualified lifeguards as it's not just a problem for her but that of many other facilities to have the lifeguard pass the minimum swim test.

Proud supporter ofThe Kels GroupThe WAVE System Drowning Detection http://.wavedds.com

'Culture of Safety that has to be in place with an operation like this, right down to finding the parent of a 2 year old that may have wondered off from their parents. Having parents understand that they need to keep their children at an arms length away at all time. The water is a dangerous place for children, as drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children ages 1-4. It is a priority of Journey's but also of ours here at the Kels Group to educate parents on the importance of learning to swim and to properly supervise children at all times as the staff and lifeguard are not babysitters.

I have explained this many times before in my own situation regarding my daughters drowning. As parents we must be responsible. Understand that it can happen to you as drowning can happen to anyone at any time when they are in the water regardless of ability to swim or supervision. This week's Episode we are going to recognize the families and loved ones that have been lost to drowning. As part of our Christmas Program we wanted to take this time that is so very difficult for so many people and read off the names of the families, their loved ones, birthdate and the date of drowning.

There is one thing I would like to say.

Drowning is the Leading Cause of Accidental Death to Children Under the Age of 5 and the 2nd Leading Cause of Accidental Death to Children Under 15.

While we read these name I want you to listen to the dates and hear just how young these children are and how these families may feel not to be spending this time with their children.

We had asked people to send in via email with their request for us to read the names of their loved one on our show. Even though that we had a very good response when we first sent out the email and post and it was shared by a few people. This is a part of our show that will be done again next year. So make sure you subscribe to our podcast so you will receive emails for future events and special recognition that you would want to be part of.

Mother and Drowning Prevention Advocate Parents Preventing Childhood Drownings Read Jenny's story and listen to today's podcast as she talks more about her story and what she has begun, a mission to create change. She's on a mission so that other parents do not have to know her pain and what she didn't know that exists around water.

There is a common theme as I talk with other parents that understand what I understand is we thought we did everything right. Visit Parents to Preventing Childhood Drowning

Listen to our show and read her story below

"Hi, my name is Jenny Bennett. I am a mother of 4 children and a full-time emergency room nurse. I am currently helping in the trauma department to help my hospital become a Level 3 Trauma Center. I have been a nurse for nearly 12 years, 9 of which in the emergency room. I am also an ENPC instructor and teach other nurses about emergency pediatric care.

Two summers ago, I lost my son Jackson to an accidental drowning in our backyard pool. He was 18 months old. A simple miscommunication of my son’s whereabouts plus a curious toddler led to him  finding our backyard pool unprotected. I’m not sure if he jumped in or fell in, but he loved swimming so my guess is that he just wanted to have some fun. I thought I was one of those super safe mother’s and that this type of thing would never happen to me. Yes, I knew drowning was a risk, but I figured if my son couldn’t get out our back door, then he would be okay. We were comfortable in our home, which we also made very safe for our son. Strange thing is, no one ever mentioned anything to me about childhood drowning prevention, not even my pediatrician.

I spent two years thinking about what I did wrong and things I should have done differently, ashamed of the mistakes I had made. But now, I want to focus on what we can do better. I had no idea drowning was the leading cause of accidental death for children aged 1-4. I’ve learned so much these past few years and I have determined that our entire culture around childhood swimming needs to change.

Children need to be taught how to be safe in the water. Layers of protection need to surround the pool to protect your little one.

After I lost Jackson, I had another son. His name is Asher and he is now 18 months old. Putting my son through ISR swim lessons this last summer opened my eyes to all the mistakes I made with Jackson.

Mistakes that I didn’t even know would be detrimental, such as parent-child swimming lessons and  puddle jumper floatation devices. Now, I want to make sure others know this information before it is too late for them and their child. This summer, I began a small campaign for my hospital for drowning prevention. It started with a pamphlet. Then I spoke at the Chamber of Commerce, then volunteered at a community event and then a baby fair. Now, I am attempting to get all the Gulf Coast area HCA hospitals (21) together to share this drowning prevention/ injury prevention initiative within their own hospitals.

But I want to do more, which brings me to PPCD. Parents Preventing Childhood Drowning was created by several non-profits and individuals like myself who are dedicated in preventing childhood drownings. We formed in August of this year over a Skype phone call. We all have similar beliefs when it comes to protecting children from drowning. We want other organizations to come together for this cause, not compete with one another, we all have the same goals. We also want to include people who do not belong to an existing organization; a mother who lost her child to drowning who wants to join the fight, an ISR instructor who has dedicated his life to saving children from drowning, a family who had a near drowning experience with their son and are so thankful he survived that they want to help in this cause. The larger we are, the stronger our voice.

This November, we were an exhibitor for the AAP National Conference in Orlando,...

Grief a

Grief and loss during the holidays. The importance of what we do and how what we know can and does save lives. It can affect families in a positive or negative way.

Grief this time of year is very personal to me. With that being said I talk a little bit about it and my feeling in this show.

Drowning has no boundaries, it doesn't discriminate, it is fast and silent it shows up when you least expect it.  Understand this when you think that someone is watching your child, you may be wrong and in the end when a drowning happens no one is watching. Ask yourself who is watching your child?

There is no other time of the year, maybe with the exception of birthdays and the anniversary of the death,  as hard as this time of the year. The time goes so slow, it appears that everyone is happy and you and your loved one has been forgotten.

Nothing can be further from the truth.

Understand that we are here for you if you need us. ❗A Special Request For Our Christmas Podcast❗ The Kels Group as part of our Drowning Warrior Podcast, are asking and looking for families that would like to honor their Loved Ones that have drowned, as part of our Christmas Show on December 20th. We will be reading off the names of those lost due to a drowning.

The Holiday's are a very tough time for these families. For those who have just recently lost a loved one this year, this is a time that only those of us that have experienced this time can explain.

I would like to honor the families and their loved ones at this time to let them know that they are not alone and The Kels Group and so many others stand with them.

Send the family name and your loved name and birth date along with the date of drowning or death.

Contactus to learn more about our program to develop your message and get that dialed in.

Does your message attract like a magnet or does it repel like a magnet? Your message is your lifeblood to your overall success. However, no one spends anytime or focus on their message. You want to get better results, then you must spend so much time on the development of your message.

Your message should have a value proposition statement. For example, You help people with X so they can have X.  So what is the problem you solve and what is the value that you bring to the marketplace. Listen to our Podcast Episode #31 as I share with you about the importance of your message that leads to the success of the overall mission. The next part of your message is your STORY.  Your story should have some basic components:

The CALL - Setting up the character who may be you or someone else that is the main focus of your story. The PIT - This is the lowest of lows. This helps draw in the person to the vulnerability of your story to make them feel as this could happen to them or they have similar experiences. The SEARCH - Following the PIT we all go on a search for something and we start to find our lessons that we learned, this happens very quickly for some people and someone like me, it has taken over 25 years to get dialed in. The INNER BREAKTHROUGH - This is what happens in the mind. Like the light bulb goes off. The OUTER BREAKTHROUGH - You begin to bring this to the surface and find your voice and message based on your life lessons that you have learned. Leads to CREDIBILITY - As you go to work, your message and voice find a home as people begin to respond more and more and you attract your idea person you want to talk to. You get your message out to the world.

From here you find your proposition statement and the belief that you can solve the problem. As you go layers deeper you find your true WHY. That will blast through all obstacles and roadblocks that stand in your way.

In this episode I'm going to get on my soap box for a bit and talk about your WHY. When life shows up is your WHY big enough and strong enough to carry you through the storm?

I know many years ago when I first learned about the power behind having a strong WHY in my life. Why I get up and do what I do. My WHY was always around my daughter and how she drowned. What I wanted to do about it.

With that being said it still wasn't BIG enough or STRONG enough to carry me through. I had always developed my WHY to speak to others. It was always about an outcome I wanted in my life. Wishing that people would feel what I was feeling to follow our mission. This never happens. They will not feel what you feel. They will feel sorry but not get on board with what your about. I believe that this is the wrong way to look at your WHY. Your WHY should be personal to you, it is from the inside out. It doesn't really speak to anyone but you. It is who you are, what you want to become.

I find what works best is to work it backwards. You know the outcome that you want to get, or the transformation that you wish to take place. Your WHY ls many layers deeper than what you really think.

In order to find it you may be required to go deep into feelings that you have buried deep down inside for a long time.

Fo example my goal is to reduce drowning by 50% by the year 2028 that is a reduction of 2,000 lives saved here in the U.S. and over 180,000 lives saved worldwide every year. But in order to accomplish that goal I have to understand what drives me. That is what is in my head and heart. First off for many years the world told me I wasn't Good Enough, I wasn't Worthy, or even Smart Enough, so I believed all that and blamed my life and all the crap on my daughters drowning. The war I wage is with myself to prove to me that I'm not all those things that the world said I was.

The other part is that when my life is over. I do not want anything unfinished. When I stand there with my daughter, she says Daddy you did a great job. And then my GOD looks and says Job Well Done Faithful Servant. I left it all on the field or should I say in this world I can't take it with me. It is my Legacy. Listen in this episode where I talk about what Legacy means to me .

This is what makes me get up in the morning at 4 am and walk to put in 5 miles before the rest of the world gets their day started. Only a few people can understand this, what's in me, the driving force. But most wish they could do that or find that inside of themselves.

I just made the decision to change my life, to create this lifestyle that will bring about change. To have that push me to change the world and reach millions upon millions of people with our message to make the impact in other people lives. In the end reaching and exceeding our goal.

By focusing on my WHY this attracts what I want in my life and not to mention the people in my life to make our goal a reality. I can't do it alone.

She shares with us, starting at a young age following here dream and desire to save lives. Listen as she also shares about events and lessons that she has learned. We need to find more people like her. If you know someone lift them up so they can make a difference.

These lessons have inspired Jaimie to pursue her passion to work in Aquatics. Working, educating and training lifeguards, not to mention swim instructors, just to be able to give them some real world experiences with stories of real individuals, so they understand the importance of the job that they perform.

She is all about safety to be able to get that message out to the people that she teaches, as they teach and work with children, families, this way they can share tidbits of the stories that she shares.

Jaimie talks about her fear as she was getting started in aquatics that something may go wrong. She faced her fear at a young age, dealt with it and knew that she could make a difference. No matter what you think. Your on a mission to teach your life lessons and what you know. You are a public figure because you are working to get your message to people who may not know who you are.

If you don't wish to be a public figure and not willing to do what it takes to successfully get that message to people. Then you need to rethink how your going to go about how you wish to deliver that message. I would suggest that you take if offline and work more on a face to face basis.

Hurricane Florence Hurricanes are dangerous. That includes Hurricane Florence. People will die when this is all over. The only question is how many deaths?  Remember Hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico where 3,000 people lost their lives during and following the storm many of which were swept away do to the amount of rain and rushing water.

Hurricane Florence is going to dump a massive amount of rain that will be causing flash floods, high water that people will drive through.

Stupid people will do stupid things. I can say this because I was one of these stupid people in 1985 when hurricane Gloria was just off the coast of Virginia Beach  Listen to this Episode where I tell a story of my experience and our stupid idea that we had and how we felt that the amount of beer we drank would somehow make us invincible. Where do you spend your time? The 2 boxes of Water Safety and Drowning Prevention vs The Business of Water Safety and Drowning Prevention

How to bring your time that you spend in one box, more in line with what you should be focused on to move your program and the mission to move your goal forward.

You see after 25 years following my daughters drowning I believe to many people spend their time in the first box or the one on the left side. I have found myself spending way to much time in this box when I should be focused more on the business and moving our mission forward.

What we should focus on is to find an equal balance between the 2 sides to make sure we are getting what we need to learn and the relationships with others. Also to get the business results that brings us closer to reaching our GOALS. This way we are in the sweet spot of our business and moving forward. Live Like Jake The event to benefit The Live Like Jake Foundation go to

https://livelikejake.com/be-the-light/

We will be there, look for us. I would love to chat a bit and learn what you're doing in the area of water safety and drowning prevention? How can we support what you are doing?

Reach out to see how you can support what they are doing not only in their own backyard but also all around the country to teach children how to float and save their lives.

This is the one skill my daughter didn't have back in 1993. If she did know how to float and self rescue she would be here today and our lives would have been on a different path.

We all need to work together to accomplish our GOALS. We all can do more than we are doing today. I know that I can.

What's ore dangerous a Gun or a Pool?

We're talking to people on the front lines of water safety and drowning prevention.

I talked with Nicholas Dionne,  the Aquatics Director at Northern Middlesex YMCA, he shared with me what they are doing and how the recent events of drowning has affected their business. They do a great job on the education and working with children teaching swimming lessons as young as 6 months old.

Babies in the water. How do we reach the new parents before their children get into the water. Is Pediatricians the answer?  I'm a parent and I feel that this is just like Layers of Protection call it Layers of Communication, there need to more than just 1 rule to reach the parents with newborn babies and children.

What's more dangerous a Gun or a Pool? If you have a response to this question respond and record your answer to this below and we just might put your response on a future podcast. Listen for more about this question.

Who are we trying to reach with our message? Where are they at and how do we talk to them? Why doesn't TV commercials work when it comes to water safety and drowning prevention?

Branding and messaging.

Grow a Pair a great book by Larry Winget. Learn how to communicate and educate people by standing your ground and know what you're talking about. Pick up this book, it should be part of your library.

We compete with other sports when it comes to learning to swim. This is a business and needs to be treated as such. What's the value that we as a group bring to the table? We can bring all the same to the table as the other sports, as in the value. I believe that we can bring more value to the children and to the parents if they just understand what swimming can offer and then some.

Make sure you subscribe to our podcast.

Record your response to the question What's more dangerous guns or pools?

Drowning Detection Technology. Yes this is a game changer in my opinion. This is why I say this. My daughter drowned 8 feet away from a lifeguard over 25 years ago. If this technology was there as it is here today, my daughter would also be here today.

Listen to this episode 018 as we talk about drowning technology as they explain their system and how it works. It is a very simple system in the way it works with the basic technology that we all use and is in our hands everyday. The WAVE System WAVE is an innovative wireless real-time swimmer tracking system that determines if any swimmer is at risk of drowning and immediately alerts your staff so they can investigate and intervene if necessary. The system works in all types of water including pools, lakes, rivers and more. It is not affected by water type, depth, clarity, glare, bubbles, marine life or other environmental factors that can adversely impact other technologies. WAVE is designed to be lifeguard-friendly and be virtually plug-n-play. Its ruggedized components work both indoors or outside for either portable or permanent use. Because WAVE is wireless, nothing needs to be installed below the surface. This means very little impact to your facility with no complicated retrofitting required.  WAVE is also surprisingly affordable, with available options and payment plans to work within your operating budget. We also work with foundational grants, corporate sponsorship's and other fundraising opportunities to enable your facility to experience the benefits of WAVE. Learn more below about how WAVE can dramatically increase safety for your facility and swimmers. http://www.wavedds.com

Yes you read that right, somebody from our past that was there at the pool 25 years ago reached out, following the episode 014 that I did with my daughter Talia.

We need to have more talks about how the affect's of the drownings of their siblings will and does affect and shape their future. Good or Bad. Plus those also that may have been there and that are affected too from these types of tragedies.

There is a whole other part of drowning out there that many times doesn't get the attention it should and that is Nonfatal drownings. We'll meet a 4 year-old who survived a nonfatal drowning over a year ago at his 4th birthday. This mother is so strong, so much stronger than I believe that I ever could be. Just look at how proud she is of her son and the smile of joy on her face and his too. Liam Strong Facebook Page

They need your support as he continues his journey with the process of healing and getting better.  Check out his store and show your support. Drowning doesn’t discriminate, it has no boundaries, it is silent, it hits when you least expect it Then we'll talk a little about the life expectancy of a foundation. Ours lasted for 8 years before it to came to an end. The average is 5-14 years for many reasons. Theres a few that stand out to me. I'll let you know in this episode.

Make sure that you share this with your friends and family and on all your social channels.

Drowning is a global epidemic. In one minute, the process of drowning begins. Five minutes, brain damage. Ten minutes, death. Drowning can be prevented. Ep016 Rebecca Wear Robinson with Make The Minute Matter The Epidemic of Drowning Rebecca's background as an expert in social marketing began with a Master’s degree in Management from the Kellogg School of Management, with concentrations in International Management, Marketing and Economics. She also has a Master’s degree in Organizational and Social Psychology from the London School of Economics, focusing on group dynamics, gender issues and flexibility in the workplace. She is leading a global campaign for social responsibility to ensure the safety of all children around water.

When Rebecca began learning about the hidden global epidemic of drowning in 2007, it created a perfect storm, combining her academic background and entrepreneurial experience with her lifelong history of advocacy for children. Rebecca accepted the challenge of ending the epidemic from the unique perspective of a strategic business consultant, determined to make an impact in the sustainable, measurable manner only a successful entrepreneur can.

She developed the concept and strategy for Make the Minute Matter and has created the structure to support the organization. Today's Episode 14 listen as she talked about that day on June 1993 when she saw her younger sister drowned. This interview was a hard one for me as it hit really close to home. However it needs to be done and told.

She recounts the events of that day. She was only 8 years-old but yet remembers it as if it was just yesterday. For us parents who have lost a child we don't understand or think how what happens affects them into adulthood.

She talks about anger, hate and the guilt she feels about that day.

She is now a mother of 3 children, 10 and younger. She has carried this fear of the water from that day. It has formed some of her decisions on water safety with her fear when it comes to putting her children in swim lessons.

How our loss has changed the world that we may never know. The memory is there. People don't forget.

I mentioned this book as we were talking by Andy Andrews The Travelers Gift

I highly recommend this book for anyone going through a big change in life, looking for direction and purpose.

Welcome to this weeks interview with Josh Duffy from DigiQuatics Josh got his start at a young age of 15 as a lifeguard. His passion for water and safety that he was able to provide carried him to follow his dream in the development of technology and to be part of the team at DigiQuatics.

DigiQuatics founders, Josh Duffy and Michael Pierce met as lifeguards at the age of 15. Both were energetic and inventive and were quickly promoted to management positions. Michael spent time as a Water Safety Instructor, Swim Team Coach, Pool Manager, and Certified Pool Operator at country clubs, private clubs and Universities. Josh also worked as a Water Safety Instructor and Assistant Pool Manager at several facilities. Combined, they have more than 12 years of experience in the aquatics industry.

Josh and Michael joined forces in 2012, to create the industry’s most comprehensive management tool—DigiQuatics. Try it risk-free for 30 days, and you’ll see why more than 18,761 aquatics professionals use it to manage their pools. "There’s just too much paper.” That’s what pool managers, Josh Duffy and Michael Pierce were thinking. It was stacked everywhere. In filing cabinets. In boxes against walls. In drawers at the front desk. And there were schedules taped on the walls in break rooms, sticky notes, emails asking for shift changes, text messages, and on and on. And it made it impossible to quickly find the records they needed.

I can see how this could be a nightmare for any pool manager that could compromise safety for time to manage the pool. Read the rest of their story at DigiQuatics.com

Listen to our podcast as Josh tells you about the development, how to use and implement the app at your pool.  His knowledge of pool safety to management from doing the work and growing up in the aquatics industry to find his calling and give back to the community that has given him the opportunity to succeed without compromising the safety of the patrons that are members and visit the pool that his company DigiQuatics and their app help to manage.

Welcome it's Monday August 6th and Summer is not over but we are on the downward turn of the summer for many of us.

We have 2 new groups,  we started, make sure you go and join as this is a community of like-minded people working together. Many with their own expertise and can help with questions and problems. With their own unique skill set based on their area of expertise.

The Business of Drowning Facebook Group

The Business of Drowning LinkedIn Group In this episode we are going to talk about The Business of Drowning Prevention Drowning prevention is a business with many different parts to it. From the nonprofit sector to the profit sector. We must all work together. We all are working toward a similar goal, that we do not want to see another child or adult drown, whether that is in a pool or an open body of water.

We have a topic and question that comes from Paul DeMello his Facebook page Just Against Children Drowning

His website is http://justagainstchildrendrowning.org/

Make sure you connect with him, show your support and how you can help. We are all in this community and need to work together and support one another in any way we can, even if that is with our information and what we know.

He suggests an area the we should look at is this.

Ariel view of a southern Florida homes from google earth

Imagine you are flying over a housing development just about anywhere. You look down and see backyard pools. You notice that these pools are right up against the house with little to no space between the back door and the pool. No room for barrier fencing. Where a child can slip right out the door and wind up in the pool. It happens every day.

What can we do to fix this problem going forward? There is a fix we need to identify the problem and then provide a solution to the problem. We as a community can do just that.

There are many experts that are part of this community already and many that will be coming in. All that have an opinion and with a group discussion we can work as a team to fix it. That is how business works. We are problem solvers. Let's work on the problem.

Today's episode of our Drowning Warriors Weekly Spotlight is with Jamie Goetch with SentagUSA. Drowning Detection Technology. He's an expert in the area of technology and how to apply this technology to your swimming pool as one of your layers of protection.

Welcome to DW Nation make sure you subscribe at DW Nation

Jamie will talk about his technology and also share with you the 3 Buckets of technology. Just what this means in today's world and what is on the horizon as far as technology.

Drowning Detection Technology is about making pools safer through innovation. Designed to dovetail with current lifeguard best practice. Proven in use at water parks and commercial pools in Europe. The Sentag wristband based system establishes an additional layer of safety and backs up the lifeguard by monitoring the time at depth of all swimmers. If the safety parameters established by the pool management are exceeded by any swimmer for any reason, the lifeguard staff receive an alarm that allows the rescue to commence before major damage occurs. Sentag wristbands also support complete RFID functionality.

I have been watching some news feeds that have been put out as parents that have lost children and what they must go through or should I say what people say about them and add their 2 cents to the conversation on a subject that they have no clue what has happened or couldn't even explain how drowning works.

I say don't let them take you power and steel your voice. You have a voice that needs to be heard. There is a large community of people who are in your corner. We'll stand together so not to let them win this battle because we'll win the war.

Listen to todays podcast as I talk about just this topic. Help me understand why this happens because I just don't get it. These people are below the scum that is in my septic tank Subscribe to our podcast https://thekelsgroup.com/subscribe-to-podcast/

As we wrap up water safety week. I wanted to share with you the importance of why you need to learn to swim.

We hear and talk a lot about children learning to swim, however we don't hear as much about the adults. Maybe that because adults don't tell us that they don't know how to swim for their own reasons. Many adults who don't know how to swim, the cause may be their fear of the water.

Kathleen talks about managing the fear or cure the fear. Get your questions answered. It's never to late to learn to swim. Listen as Kathleen talks about The Who, What, Where and Why to help adults get over their fear and learn to swim to enjoy the water. About Swim Calm Charleston Have you dreamed of becoming comfortable enough in the water to exercise or swim for fun?  How about a water aerobics class or playing games in the pool with children or grandchildren? Would you like spend an afternoon on a boat without dreading the water? Can you rest as calmly in deep water as in shallow water? For adults with hesitation, to a moderate fear to a complete panicked fear of the water, there is now a system of teaching designed for you.  We do not insist that you “Relax, get in up to your waist, put your face in the water and blow bubbles” or “Learn one stroke and you will get over your fear.”

Kathleen Wilson, primary SwimCalm instructor has considerable aquatic experience and certifications as she chooses to serve a segment of the population that has not been underserved; it has not been served at all.

SwimCalm is dedicated to the high percentage of adults who experience some fear to a profound fear of the water and teaching them about its properties while learning how to feel safe in the water.

References for this amazing teaching paradigms are available and for further information or questions, please contact Kathleen Wilson at 843-708-0846 or aquaharp@bellsouth.net

SwimCalm is a teaching system for adults with mild to severe fear of water. Traditional swimming lessons have not worked for these students and has prevented a lifetime of activities centered around the water. SwimCalm teaching removes that fear and allows students to learn how water works and how to move in it with ease

Darlene Haskins, Executive Director - Hand in Hand Water Safety Awarness Foundation

This passion really began when I first started working as a lifeguard and swim instructor in high school. I went on to obtain my Early Childhood Education certificate, operated a large in-home preschool, and taught in a variety of facilities including, my favorite, a Montessori school. During this time, I continued to lifeguard and teach swimming at the YMCA. I was asked by several families if there were any ISR instructors in the area - it became apparent that there was a desire for something more than the mommy and me classes available. After researching ISR, I applied to become an instructor, was accepted in 2013, and trained in 2014. From there, I established Safe Swim NC, now one of the Triad's leading providers of swim lessons and safety training.

Through ISR, I became increasingly educated on water safety and drowning statistics and have become a strong advocate for survival swim lessons and educating on the layers of drowning prevention. I soon recognized amongst the families I taught a need for safety training and swim lessons for parents and older siblings and obtained my American Red Cross Instructor Certification for Water Safety/Swim and CPR/First Aid/AED Adult and Pediatric. Wanting to further my efforts in our community and beyond, I launched the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Hand in Hand Water Safety Awareness Foundation, with the mission to equip all people with survival swimming skills and water safety best practices to prevent drowning-related accidents.

What is ISR Infant Swim Resource. You can read all about ISR on their website

Darlene also has brought back a student Named Jimmy from Uganda Africa, where he has been here for several months studying and learning under Darlene to have the skills necessary to go back to his home country to teach these skills to the people there as this is a world-wide epidemic with over 372,000 drowning each year.

You can reach Darlene through her website at Hand in Hands Water Safety Awareness Foundation

Thank you Darlene and Jimmy and also to all the other ISR instructors that are teaching young children this very valuable skill to self-rescue to reduce drownings. You guys are awesome
