To mark the return of BBC Radio London, we look back at the years leading up to this point with a few memories from the archives. of BBC London 94.9.

During the Second World War, hundreds of British children were interned in camps in Shanghai.
When the war ended, the children were brought on board HMS Belfast, and the crew organised a party.
Seventy years on, the warship - which is moored on the Thames - has hosted another celebration to commemorate the day.
Many of the 'children' from the Shanghai party were there, as well as one surviving member of the crew.

What makes Londoners travel to Calais in order to help migrants living at the makeshift camp known as the "Jungle"?
BBC London 94.9's David Friend joined up with a group called London2Calais to find out.
As well as offering aid to those living in the camp they took part in a march in solidarity with those trying to come to the UK.
What's described as the greatest collection of Soviet spacecraft and artefacts, ever seen outside of Russia, has landed at the Science Museum in South Kensington.
Objects include a 5 metre lunar lander which was built in 1969 and kept secret from the world until 1989.
There's also a space toilet and shower, and a dog ejector seat.
Getting a special preview of the exhibition today was the first woman in space, Valentina Tereshkova.
She was reunited with the landing pod which brought her back to earth.

September 15th is Battle of Britain Day.
It marks the decisive aerial encounter of the battle, when the RAF broke up two Luftwaffe raids on London .
Paul Richey was a fighter pilot who, due to injury, spent the Battle of Britain on the ground.
His daughter, Emma Williams, has been telling BBC London 94.9 that didn't stop him being VERY involved...

Imperial War Museum, London is bidding become the site of a proposed new national Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre.
The Museum's current Holocaust exhibition attracts a around a million visitors a year but a new grant of £5m could allow it to become the centre of holocaust remembrance in the UK.

Today marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the start of the Blitz - the German bombing campaign which lasted from Autumn 1940 to Spring 1941.
On the seventh of September 1940 - the Luftwaffe, launched a massive raid on London.
More than 350 bombers flew across the Channel from airfields in France and dropped 300 tonnes of bombs on the docks and streets of the East End.

Author Patrick Ness has helped raise more than a quarter of a million pounds for the Syrian refugee crisis.
He set up a fundraising page with the aim, initially, of raising £10,000.

A new GCSE aimed at inspiring more boys to study cookery has been launched by chef Heston Blumenthal.
The course will look at the science behind food and global issues like food shortages as well as the basics of cookery and nutrition.

One of Labour's candidates for London Mayor has challenged Boris Johnson to offer to take in two thousand Syrian refugees.
Gareth Thomas, who's the MP for Harrow West, has told Vanessa Feltz that London has a responsibility to help and Boris should meet the leader of every borough to devise a strategy.

London's RAF Museum has been nominated for a National Lottery Award for its First World War in the Air project.
It's up against six other projects to be crowned the winner of the Best Heritage category.
Voting closes on Monday with the winner announced in September.

A public ballot has been launched to allow 8000 people to attend the Battle of the Somme centenary event in a year's time.
The ceremony in France takes place on July 1st next year.
The Government is also allocating a further four-million pounds to the Heritage Lottery Fund so communities can explore and share local connections to the First World War.
Today's announcement was made at the Guards Memorial overlooking Horse Guards Parade.

Rachel Johnson has criticised her brother, London Mayor Boris Johnson, over Black Cabs in London.
Speaking to BBC London 94.9's Joanne Good, she said he needs to do more to protect the licensed cab trade in the capital.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has now spent three years inside the Ecuadoran embassy in London.
Mr Assange, who denies allegations he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden, faces arrest if he leaves the building.
It's thought the cost of providing a 24 hour police presence has now past 10 million pounds.

Maida Vale Station on the Bakerloo Line is celebrating its 100th birthday.
When it opened, on June 6th 1915, it was staffed entirely by women.
They were filling the roles left open by the departure of men to the Fronts of World War One.
Celebrations have been taking place at the station and BBC London 94.9's David Friend was invited.
It's 100 years since London first came under attack from the air.
On the evening of May 31st 1915 an incendiary bomb was dropped, from a German Zeppelin airship, onto the roof of a home in Stoke Newington.
Hackney Council has now unveiled a new plaque at the site of the incident.

Widely practiced in the American South before the Civil War, Sacred Harp singing has crossed the pond and is becoming more popular here in London.
The name comes from the title of the book from which the songs are sung.
The notes are shapes which help the singers read music.

On Christmas Day 2013, Ilse Fieldsend's 3-year-old daughter Georgia died suddenly of a ruptured brain aneurysm. On that same day, she made the decision to allow Georgia's organs to be used to save six other lives. Eleven year old Curtis Elton from Barnet has just earned his music degree. His mum Hayley, who's a concert pianist herself, brought him in to play for Penny and Paul.
The President of the Liberal Democrats has told BBC London 94.9 she felt like she was "just a package" after being told she couldn't get on a London bus because a child's buggy was in the wheelchair space.
Baroness Sal Brinton, who uses a wheelchair, was asked to wait for the next bus.
She is making a formal complaint to Transport for London.

Transport for London's Director of Buses Mike Weston told us:
"I'm very sorry about Baroness Sal Brinton's experience. We have spoken to the bus operator Metroline and they are investigating. Our guidance to bus drivers clearly states that wheelchair users are to be given priority access to the dedicated space on our buses even if it is occupied by a buggy or other passengers".
The Crystal Palace Food Market has been nominated for a BBC Food and Farming Award.
The market, which began in 2012, is in the running for Best Food Market.

HIba Dahab's son Abdullah was on his way to Mount Everest when the earthquake struck in Nepal. She tells Paul Ross and Penny Smith that for two days, she didn't know if he was alive or dead.

Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has spoken in defence of Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman.
Rahman has been thrown out of office by a judge who said he'd used bribery and other illegal practices to win the contest last May.
The election in Tower Hamlets will now be re-run but Lutfur Rahman won't be allowed to stand again.

Helen Grant MP, who is the minister responsible for WW1 commemorations told us: "We are inviting descendants, whatever their nationality, to apply for free tickets to watch from a reserved area and actually join in the march past the Cenotaph. The public too are invited to come along."

The 92 year old survived the Holocaust having escaped the Warsaw Ghetto. She spent the winter of 1942/43 hiding in woodland in Poland. After changing her identity Sabina was questioned by the Gestapo three times but eventually "cleared" of being Jewish.
Sabina was the only member of her family to survive the war. She has no photographs of her parents or brothers and sister. The only possession she has from before the war is a red cardigan given to her by her mother in 1938.

The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has made an arrest during an exclusive interview with BBC London 94.9.
During the interview in #Tottenham, a minicab driver told the Commissioner some passengers had dodged their fare and made off with his mobile phone - so Sir Bernard jumped in the taxi after them.
It was his first arrest since being appointed to the role of commissioner in September 2011.

Kevin Crowley works a fish block man. What he doesn’t know about fish is not worth knowing. But it’s for his voluntary work that he’s been nominated to carry the Olympic torch. Kevin gives his own time – and his own fish – to help young people training at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant. The young people there have the opportunity of a lifetime and ‘Big Kev’ plays a inspirational part in that. It’s something they appreciate which is why he’s been selected as an torch bearer in Ealing on 24 July.

The Gay Football Supporters' Network was set up over a decade ago to help promote football to a group of the community who were sometimes made to feel marginalised simply by joining-in a sport its members loved.
Cara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of six. She works on behalf of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation helping children cope with the news of their diabetes diagnosis. Thirteen year-old Cara will be running with the torch on 26 July in Westminster
Since 1984, Alan Naftalin has devoted his life to developing women's health services in Newham as a gynaecologist at Newham General Hospital.
He currently suffers from myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow, and has had continuous chemotherapy since 2007. Despite its disabling effects he has continued to work and support other cancer sufferers, his family, students, fellow doctors and to all those around him.
He has worked tirelessly to help so many of Newham's women; he has delivered thousands of babies and as Director of Medical Education has inspired generations of young and not so young doctors.

Repairing the world is the aim of Ophelia English an intensive care nurse at London’s Royal Brompton Hospital. She’ll be running with the torch on 26 July in Kensington and Chelsea.
She’s been nominated because of her work in Haiti with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders). She went there three times after the earthquake in 2010 and treated people the most traumatic time of their lives.
Millie is a volunteer coach at KEEN London who provide free one-to-one sports and recreational activities for children and young adults with special needs. Millie’s running with the torch on 24 July in Kingston.
Millie attends every time she can - some weeks leading a session as a whole, other weeks providing one-to-one support for our 'athletes' with very demanding disabilities. She has extended her commitment to working with some children outside of the KEEN sessions, providing respite care and support for families.
Additionally, she actively recruits new volunteers and fundraises in her spare time.
Elise Cobain – carrying the torch in Redbridge on July 22nd
Elise Cobain volunteers her time at the Roundhouse, a charity designed to provide creative and vocational opportunities to over 3000 young people a year based at the iconic Camden venue.
She has helped develop Roundhouse Radio and is part of the Youth Advisory Board and the Board of Trustees.
Outside the Roundhouse Elise works on the BBC Introducing Show at BBC Radio Kent and has recently started working as a Unit Assistant at Radio 1.
Don Guiney carrying the Olympic Torch through the City of London on July 16th
Don has organised baseball in London for over 20 years, the last 17 of which he has served as Commissioner of the London Baseball program.
Don's involvement originated when his kids participated in the program. Though his kids are long since grown up, Don remains a fixture of London Baseball, suffering the wind and rain of the micro-climate at Wormwood Scrubs, where the League plays from April to June each year. Each weekend, Don assembles 21 baseball diamonds, organises games for six different divisions, manages the umpires, and spreads good cheer.
Each year, 550-600 players enrol in the program which Don runs alongside his day job as a partner in a City law firm.
Caroline works for the small Brixton-based charity Chance UK who wncourage local volunteers to mentor primary school children with behavioural difficulties. The aim being to provide positive role models and someone consistent in the children’s lives to help them with their anger/self esteem/confidence/making the right choices.
Caroline says: Inner London can be quite a depressing place at times for these children with the lack or opportunities & lack of positive role models. I can only hope that my passion and the passion of the volunteers that I manage will have a positive effect on some of them.
In 1985 Steve and his wife set up Oasis Trust, based in Waterloo, working with the homeless and disadvantaged. Oasis now works in 11 countries on five continents providing education, housing, training and healthcare. In the UK Oasis has become an important provider of opportunities for young people through its sponsorship of Academies. Oasis now runs 14 academies across the country.
In 2005 Steve raised £1.25m running the London marathon. In the 2011 marathon he raised £2.32mn, a new world record for a single participant.
In 2004, only 13 weeks after she got married, her husband Kieron was killed in an industrial accident. He worked in the construction industry. Since then, and because of the support people in Kieron’s line of work gave Jennifer after he was killed, she has been dedicated to supporting people who’ve experienced loss like hers and to preventing similar tragedies.
She’ll be carrying the torch on 23 July in Merton.

Just 24, actor John had recently graduated with a first from Oxford, when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002. After a year of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy he tried to get back on track but suffered severe depression and was sectioned. A friend introduced him to running and, though he had never run before, entered him for the London Marathon. He completed that in 2004. John, who’s now a mental health counsellor, tells us how his spirit overcame problems and now inspires and encourages others to carry on despite adversity.
He’ll be carrying the torch on 26 July in Kensington and Chelsea.
Inderjit Bhalla is 74 year old. He says eight years ago he was on his death bed. A liver transplant saved him. Since then he’s won many gold medals at the World Transplant Games playing his favourite sport Badminton. He’ll be carrying the torch on 25 July in Brent.
