Interviewed yesterday no BBC Three Counties Radio Luton South Tory candidate Katie Redmond says the government haven't curtailed the rights of local councils to open new schools.
In reality, local authorities have had their powers significantly reduced in favour of the Tory-Lib Dem free schools agenda. Councils are no longer free to open new schools to ensure they have enough school places in their area.
Moments later presenter Iain Lee revealed that the Tories' candidate was wrong, explaining that he "let her off easy" as it was her first time being interviewed. He warns: “I did say to Katie when she left, that was the only free pass you’re getting. Next time you come in it’s all guns blazing … it’s hammer time."
The Tory candidate for Luton South was interviewed by Iain Lee from BBC Three Counties Radio on the chaos over the government's decision to scrap the Luton Girls' Academy free school.
While claiming that the Tory free school programme has been "a big success story", Redmond nonetheless admits that "we don’t know what’s been spent and what hasn’t been spent" out of the £180,000 the government has paid to the company behind the proposed school.
In response to the Luton school places crisis she incorrectly states more than once that local councils are free to open new schools.
