The Glo Podcast asks questions about self-care, deepening your sense of self and inspiring you to take action for a better world. Derik Mills, co-founder and co-CEO of Glo.com, speaks with guests about their practices and solutions for managing burnout, getting more sleep, dealing with anxiety, and becoming a better listener.
We deepen our understanding of the connections we make in inner experiences that emerge from our biology, within our psychology, and through physical movement, and bring them into our outer experiences of relationships, workplace culture, and leadership. Self-care extends into our work life, our family life, and our innermost experiences of self. Self-care is not merely a concept we use to explore ourselves. It is a complexity of practices we can do with each other and by ourselves. We cover meditation and yoga practices, strategies to develop more inner strength and calm, and life choices to help you work with anxiety and burnout.
Glo connects people through self-care so that, together, we can heal ourselves and our planet.
Prenatal yoga helps prepare the body for labor and delivery, and the benefits can include stress reduction, improved emotional well-being, and increased self-awareness. As in any health or exercise program pursued during pregnancy, it’s important to listen to your body and consult with your doctor or health practitioner for guidance, before you begin.
Guest-host Katie Baki is in her third trimester and guest Ali Owens is a mother of three. They are both teachers at Glo. Katie has a three-part class of prenatal yoga classes on the Glo platform.
Katie and Ali discuss how pregnant yoga practitioners must adjust their practice to accommodate the changes in the body during pregnancy. Yoga props can help, providing support for the body and more room for the baby. Katie and Ali discuss the prevailing myths about yoga during pregnancy, focus on the importance of core work to foster stability (rather than strengthening), and how to use breath work and pelvic floor exercises to help with relaxation, stress reduction, and preparing for labor and delivery. They agree that one of the top benefits to practicing prenatal yoga is learning how to listen to the body and check in with what it needs.
To wrap up the conversation, they discuss what prenatal yoga classes are available on the Glo platform.

In the conversation, Divya tells the story of her journey into yoga as a Tamil-American who did not see herself represented in the yoga industry born out of her own culture. She shares her thoughts about how to decolonize yoga by creating diverse, inclusive spaces and furthering collective wellness as a form of social justice. Divya breaks down yogic techniques in a way that are transferable off the mat, turning a practice into a lifestyle.

Stress is a presence that we cannot deny in our lives. We will find some evidence of it every day. Professor Douglas Brooks says that it’s up to us to rise to the challenge of stress and in so doing, head it off before it turns into burnout.
Stress, says Professor Brooks, is a natural and important feature of our human constitution. He recommends resources and practices that can help counteract it. Foremost among them is to simply breathe, and to make a commitment to our yoga practice. That engagement with ourselves and with yoga gives us empowerment.

Etienne Maurice, Founder & CEO of WalkGood LA, wants the organization to be a bridge for people to heal, be more mindful, and become more self-aware, through the practice of yoga and self-care. In an interview conducted by Glo teacher Ivorie Jenkins, Etienne, along with Namaste Marley Rae, Director of Health & Wellness WalkGood LA, and Ivy Coco Maurice, Stylist, Creative Community Entrepreneur, and Vice-President of WalkGood LA, discuss WalkGood LA’s mission. During the podcast episode, Etienne says, “We are who we are because of our grandparents, and we are their dreams manifested. We are their wildest dreams come true. WalkGood would not have come into our minds if our grandmother didn’t tell us to walk good when we’d leave our house. ‘Walk good’ is a Jamaican euphemism that means to take care, you know, take care of yourself when you’re out in the world, but most importantly be good to yourself. And it’s a healing affirmation that stuck in my mind all the time.”
“Yoga,” added Marley, “is used to relieve suffering. That’s why we meditate, that’s why we do yoga. And if we’re not talking about the things that are causing us pain and suffering, then we’re not using this healing practice to its fullest potential. I think if we’re able to all come together and have these tools and say ‘you are valuable enough to heal and to get better,’ we can all think clearer. We can all be kinder to ourselves, to the Earth, to the people around us. And in return we can all find a solution or a resolution to social justice issues.”

We can see anxiety as a problem to be solved, or an enemy to be battled, or at the very least, a feature of ourselves that doesn’t express our true self. But Professor Douglas Brooks offers the Sutras of Patanjali, other sacred texts, and lessons we can take from yoga, to explore a pathway to understanding anxiety that is empowering rather than debilitating, nurturing and protective rather than only stressful and terrorizing, and one that will help us enter a deeper relationship with ourselves.

In five bonus episodes, Dr. Chapple will give you a taste of the history of yoga. Telling the story of yoga’s history is challenging for many reasons. It’s a history that spans thousands of years and many cultures and can vary by interpretation, personal perspective and agendas. And it isn’t a history that is easily told in serial, chronological time. In the West, we like to think of history as “one thing happening after another.” the Bible, for example, starts with the words “in the beginning …”
But in India, our relationship with time is different. It’s maybe more of a spiral with feedback loops rather than a straight line. So, in this series of lectures, you can expect a journey that goes deeper and deeper. To the seeker of knowledge, they will, as these stories always have, take you on a journey to understand where we came from and who we are now.

The holistic psychologist and author Nicole LePera wants her clients and patients to feel more comfortable with being uncomfortable. She says that experiencing discomfort helps us develop resilience. This is what gives us all the courage to risk more and try new things.
This was part of her education into understanding why many of her clients had incredible insights and awareness about themselves, but still felt stuck in therapy. She empathized, often feeling as stuck as they did. A door opened for her when she started to include the body in her study of the mind. She saw the role of how both genetics and our environment played in shaping our personality and our connection to each other.

Celest Pereira, a physiotherapy expert, joins guest host Marc Laws II, a Glo instructor, in a conversation about neuroscience and biomechanics.
In previous episodes of The Glo Podcast, we’ve talked about how the brain perceives and creates the world we experience. Celest brings a new chapter to those conversations. She and Marc discuss nociceptors, the sensory neurons that respond to potentially damaging stimuli by sending “possible threat” signals to the spinal cord and brain. The brain creates the sensation of pain to call attention to the part of the body that might be at risk.
Celest is a co-author, with Adell Bridges, of Too Flexible To Feel Good, a book for double-jointed or overly flexible people who struggle with injuries in their yoga practice. She is also the host of the Love at First Science podcast.

In the segregated American South, Black women were not allowed to have their babies in white-run hospitals. Black women had their babies at home, assisted by midwives.
Sarahn Henderson was called to the profession of midwifery in 1980. Curious to learn more about her profession and its history, she embarked on a research mission that took her to local libraries and archives of her local Department of Health in Georgia.
As she read everything she could get her hands on, she soon discovered that the narrative inevitably told the story of the white midwife, rarely the Black midwife. But she dug deeper, and eventually viewed a documentary called “All My Babies,” directed and written by George C. Stoney. The film tells the story of "Miss Mary" Coley, a Black midwife in rural Georgia. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Public Health, it explores the life and times of the “granny” midwife.
In the interview with Khetanya, Sarahn Henderson illuminates the history of the granny midwife who delivered babies at home, outside the hospital system and away from the “medical industrial complex.” Every community had its midwife, who often went as far as her feet could take her, walking to get to a birth in a timely fashion.

In part two of our exploration of mindfulness, Professor Douglas Brooks summons his extensive knowledge of ancient texts to help listeners access a deep understanding of mindfulness and its practices.
Derik Mills and Professor Brooks discuss how mindfulness is not just something you’re practicing on your yoga mat. It is a moment to moment practice that you develop every day. Professor Brooks believes the true benefits will come with commitment. “Little by little, again and again,” is the way to approach this rewarding practice.

Orly Wahba, educator, entrepreneur, and author of Kindness Boomerang: How to Save the World (and Yourself) Through 365 Daily Acts, believes that kindness is not something you practice once in a while, but instead kindness is a way of seeing the world. She’s a TED speaker whose projects include Dance for Kindness, Project Hope Exchange, and Life Vest Inside.
In this episode of The Glo Podcast, Orly shares the story of how, when she was a girl in middle school, a fire in her family home left her family rootless and her father without a business. The lessons learned during that trying time became a foundation for her to understand why kindness is vital.

Breathwork teacher Jay Bradley discusses how breathwork has helped him heal and helped him heal others. Interviewed by guest host Gustavo Padron, Jay shares what it was like to grow up in a small Canadian town and the impact of being bullied for being gay. Jay talks about how he delved deeply into breathwork after attending a gay men’s group that had a breathwork circle. The experience of doing breathwork in the group was an inflection point for him, changing his life and, he says, transforming him on all levels.
Together, Gustavo and Jay make clear how breathwork can rewire your system. As Jay puts it, every inhale is brand-new energy that we’ve never had in the body before.

There are many myths about what it means to have boundaries and why we may be afraid or unwilling to set them. Many women, says psychotherapist Terri Cole, are often raised to “be a good girl.” This is the highest virtue many women are raised to offer: Being liked. But when we prioritize other people over ourselves, it leads to a place of anger and bitterness. Terri Cole calls it “the disease to please.”
Her book Boundary Boss-The Essential Guide to Talk True, Be Seen and (Finally) Live Free will show you have to express your preferences, needs, and limits so you can live the happy, healthy life you deserve.
Her mission is teaching women how to attract and sustain healthy and vibrant love into their lives and how to establish and maintain effective boundaries with grace.

Journalist Beth Macy was moved by the stories she reported about addiction. As she says in her interview with Derik Mills, “I’ve learned to pay attention to things that make the hair stand up on the back of my neck.” In her book Dopesick, she takes the reader into the epicenter of the nation’s opioid crisis. On the podcast, Beth shares her work process and some astounding statistics about the depth of the crisis. For example, in America, there is an 88% treatment gap, meaning that only 12% of people addicted to opioids have gotten treatment.
Beth and Derik discuss how drug addiction has been stigmatized. She shares some behind the scenes stories of filming the Hulu series based on her book, including her appearance in the show, and the fine acting work of Rosario Dawson, Michael Keaton, and Kaitlyn Dever.

Elazar Aslan is the Founder and CEO of Caterfly Solutions, a coaching firm that specializes in helping leaders operate from their peak potential to have a positive and sustainable impact on their businesses and communities. He recently co-authored “Boundless Leadership” with Dr. Joe Loizzo, who appeared on episode 32 of The Glo Podcast.
Today’s episode dives deeper into the kind of self-work authentic leadership requires. Elazar shares from his personal experience of endeavoring inward to discover his own leadership potential as well as his proven leadership principles and meditation practices he has used to guide leaders in corporations, including Chase, D&B, MasterCard, American Express, and ADP, as well as hyper-growth start-ups.
His views on leadership invite us to question our definition of what a leader is, and he has found that effective and healthy leadership is really about what is going on inside the leader. This interview is a follow-up conversation to Derik’s interview with Dr. Joe Loizzo, co-author of Boundless Leadership with Elazar, episode 32 (linked below).

Derik Mills speaks with Dr. Joe Loizzo, co-author, with Elazar Aslan, on their new business book Boundless Leadership. Leadership is traditionally tied to stress and assumptions about stress. Dr. Joe Loizzo, psychotherapist, clinical researcher, and Buddhist scholar-teacher, speaks with Derik about pivoting from stress-fueled leadership styles to a kind of leadership that focuses on co-creating psychologically safe and meaningful relationships at work.
The workplace is where we spend most waking hours, and business has become, as Dr. Loizzo says, the dominant force on the planet. It’s time to reexamine how it is shaping us and how we can shape it so we can experience more compassion and fulfillment through our work.
In this conversation, Dr. Loizzo reveals their science-based vision of leadership grounded in current neuroscience and contemplative practices. Their systematic roadmap provides methods of training the mind that is secular, tradition neutral, such that anyone can use them to help transform our mind, body, and brain.

Today’s episode invites you to explore the origin of your emotional intelligence. Consider that most of our life is lived inside of our head. Continuing our series of interviews with first responders, Derik Mills chats with Amber Miskovich, a former medic, firefighter, and paramedic turned yoga teacher and studio owner. We met Amber through the photographer Robert Sturman, who has photographed first responders doing yoga.
In our interview, Amber shares that “first responders, on average, only live five years past retirement.” After leaving her career as a firefighter, Amber experienced this steep psychological and physical price firsthand. It was then that she turned to Save A Warrior or (SAW), an innovative "war detox" program for Warriors suffering from Post Traumatic Stress. She shares how this helped her find a new passion in service through wellness, massage, yoga, and meditation. She went on to open a yoga studio in her home state of Ohio, where she teaches yoga and breathwork as a practice for current and former first responders to deal with the demands and PTSD of their demanding careers.

Most people say, “I want to get rid of all the stress in my life” or “I don’t want any anxiety in my life.” But, as Dr. Wendy A. Suzuki explains, we all need good anxiety. Anxiety is the fire that drives us forward.
As the Professor of Neural Science and Psychology at the Center for Neural Science at New York University, Dr. Suzuki is known for her research on our ability to form and retain new long-term memories, but after experiencing her own issues around anxiety and weight gain, she changed course. Now she studies the connection between anxiety and aerobic exercise and its positive impact on our memory and cognitive abilities. The tools she shares from her books, “Good Anxiety: Harnessing the Power of the Most Misunderstood Emotion” and “Healthy Brain, Happy Life: A Personal Program to Activate Your Brain & Do Everything Better,” are incredibly impactful and easy to implement.

Derik Mills in a powerful conversation with Dr. Yasmene Mumby, discussing her journey as a writer, activist, artist, wellbeing guide, middle school teacher, community organizer, and law student.
She is the creator of a multi-part audio-memoir series called Ahimsa, and author of “Amplify Black Voices: Yoga, You Can Do Better,” an influential article she wrote for Elephant Journal about her experience as a Black woman in the “predominantly white-centered yoga community.”

On The Glo Podcast, we spark conversations about expanding the meaning of self-care. Every episode offers inspiration for you to expand your self-knowledge and take action in the world.
Podcast production assistance by Red Cup Agency.
