This is a podcast about running, mostly distance running, by two guys who like to run. Neither are experts or elite athletes, but we have a good time and figured we would amuse ourselves by recording our thoughts on races, training, routes and all things running. If you're an average "joe" or "jane" runner, this is the place for you. So tune in, share and enjoy the banter.
In this episode, Part 1 of 2, our panel of runners discusses their recent experiences of finishing 100 mile runs. They all had different experiences, challenges and successes that they are sharing with you, the every-day-runner, who can take away some great information to help you on your path to whatever ultra distance you're trying to conquer.
A big thanks to the Daily Run Company for letting us use their store for recording the podcast. Please check them out!

Here are the links to the runs that our runners participated finished.
In this episode J.T. talks about his second trip in completing the Vol. State 500k in Tennessee. Going through five states in the middle of July, to say this is a brutal test of you will would be an understatement.

Here is a link to a written account from last year which is really good from JT.
This episode is a little late getting out. We recorded this the day of the eclipse and we are discussing interesting trail experiences--like a crazy looking guy with a big knife on your trail!
However, I failed to put in the correct memory card and we.....Bonked!! Right in the middle of Andy's story.
We will pick up where we left off....we promise.
In this episode Andy, Jason and Bethany discuss the mental aspect of ultra running along with all of the small things that can't be overlooked when running an ultra.
Keeping things in perspective and attacking the trail and race in chunks is key. When you're struggling you need to keep going and be able to adapt to the conditions and situation. Just DO....NOT.....QUIT!!!
Additionally we end with some stories of adversity.
Since the recording of this podcast, JT finished and he's a little beat up, but safe. We'll get his story soon!
Thanks for tuning in and shop local. We support The Daily Run Company in Washington, MO.
Just a little advice, get some wooden coins, after this podcast you'll want some!
For tonight's podcast, we are discussing 3 things that beginning and intermediate runners can focus on to avoid injury. My three things:
Not running too many miles too early. 10% rule.
Avoid running long runs too fast. Zone 2.
Shoes and running form. Avoid negative and neutral running shoes in the beginning. Then acclimate over a long period of time. Avoid heel striking and work on a mid-foot strike.
As far as my thoughts/personal experience/current recovery after recent ankle surgery (again, piggy-backing off some of Andy's points), id like to discuss:
1) Importance of getting the right shoes and that not all shoes will work for dif ppl. it's important to understand that what works for your friend may not work for you; because ultimately, an ill fitting shoe WILL change your gait/running form.
2) RESPECTING RECOVERY (and how training too hard has a cumulative effect on your recovery for the next day... which over time = compounds and you get injured due to never really recovering).
Also, that there are dif types of recovery of course -- recovery from one workout to the next...and recovery, as in listening to your body if you're feeling pains that you shouldn't run through.
We support local running stores--check out The Daily Run Company in Washington, MO.
Full discosure; there was audio issues with Andy's microphone--we'll get it fixed for the next one.
This episode we bring on Andy again, who will be a regular and host, along with a new friend who is fast---even if he says he isn't!!
Russell Wenz from the Kansas City area who is FAST, no matter what he says. He discusses having the ability to still break 19:00 for a 5K and his pacing half-marathons at 1:35.
We also discuss the idea of taking the Wild Hogs concept to a camper/RV for trail runners. Also, consider coming with us for our Winter Camping/Trail Running Series!
In this episode talks with Eric Roberts and Matt Hoevelmann, Jason's younger, faster brother. We discuss how Matt and Jason got started running and being over-achievers for our first two half-marathons.
We also brag on who we have out run and beat in our running expeditions, some lasted and some did not!
Eric discusses his introduction into trail running after killing it on the soccer field; he's also younger than Matt and Jason both--so he has that on his side.
We're pretty much all over the map on this one, but it's fun and we do talk about Matt formerly being in Husky jeans--he's okay with it--no worries.
Now we wait for J.T. and Andy to get back and provide some more seasoned trail/ultra running stories.
Thanks for tuning in and please share!

We're baaaack!!
We have a new guest who will no doubt become a regular on the podcast. Andy Smola joined us and give him credit, he drove a long way into the country to sit on my porch (Jason's) to record this podcast.
We had a great time and have plans for more recordings, some from remote locations like races or trail heads!
The discussion is about Andy's runs, local races and what we like and don't like. Once again I was beat up about my misunderstanding of the water bottles!
Keep listening and please share!
This episode has JT and Jason discussing a little bit about trying things out on training runs before you use it on race day. This was a problem for Jason a year ago and they will share the story of learning how to use your new water bottles.
Especially being able to manipulate the nipples on those bottles!
Enjoy and share!
The picture is of the water bottle that caused me so much grief. It wasn't the bottles' fault; totally all mine!
The bottle is from a Scott Jurek Ultimate Direction trail vest, the vest comes with two bottles.
Finally! I nailed down J.T. to do a podcast for his introduction. He was nervous; phew--he did great!
J.T. is the reason I (Jason) got started in running trails and I haven't really looked back.
This episode is all about J.T. and he lays out how he got into running, what runs he has done and a few injury issues that he has worked through over the years.
Additionally, this blog post has a video from our run from yesterday with another friend that ran his first train run with us. He completed 5.4 miles with us and made me feel even more out of shape because he didn't struggle at all!!
Here is the Video
But, Eric is younger that us and he still can pretty much eat anything he wants.
I hope you enjoy the video and, of course, the podcast.
Keep running or chugging along and we'll keep sharing. Be sure to share our podcast and blog site, we'll surely appreciate it.
Again, if you like the intro music be sure to check out Screaming Hawk Productions, a high school in Murfreesboro, TN. My youngest brother teaches this class and they did this for me–I think it’s great. Give them some love if you can!

Hey, here we are! Well, at least I am, Jason. J.T. will be here next time. The is a new podcast from the blog site that J.T. created. We are not elite athletes or even that fast--in fact, I'm not fast at all. But, we like to run and we figured we'd give a shot at talking about it from the average "Joe" and average "Jane" perspective.
First, if you like the intro music be sure to check out Screaming Hawk Productions, a high school in Murfreesboro, TN. My youngest brother teaches this class and they did this for me--I think it's great. Give them some love if you can!
This episode is just Jason giving a short introduction about him and how he got started running. He talks about some of his goals and thoughts on running.
We'll see you next time!
