Welcome back to Stronger in the Difficult Places. I’m your host, Dr. Zoe, and today we’re digging deep into a topic that hits close to home for so many women in difficult relationships: the difference between enmeshment, co-dependence, and healthy interdependence.

These patterns can be hard to recognize when they’re all you’ve ever known. Maybe you were taught that love means sacrifice. That closeness means never saying no. That boundaries are rejection. But the truth? Real love doesn’t require you to disappear.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • The key differences between enmeshment and co-dependence
  • How these dynamics show up in parent-child and romantic relationships
  • Why emotional fusion is not the same as intimacy
  • What healthy interdependence actually looks and feels like
  • How to begin untangling your identity from someone else’s needs

This episode is for the woman who’s tired of losing herself in the name of love. Who wants connection — but not at the cost of her own soul. Who’s ready to set boundaries not out of anger, but out of clarity and care.

Remember: We’re not fixing them. We’re fixing you. And that changes everything.

If you’re feeling tired—but not just in your body, in your soul—this episode is for you.

Dr. Zoe sits down with Tracie Braylock, holistic nurse, educator, and author of Radical Relaxation: Releasing the Stress You Were Never Meant to Carry. Together, they unpack what “radical relaxation” really means (hint: it’s not about bubble baths) and why women especially need to redefine their relationship with rest.

We talk about:

  • Why modern stress is more than just a lifestyle issue—it’s a spiritual and physiological one
  • The difference between numbing out and true restoration
  • How to recognize your stress signals before your body forces you to stop
  • The role of boundaries in protecting your peace
  • How Biblical wisdom and scientific research both point to the necessity of deep rest

Tracie brings her experience as a former operating room nurse and her current role as a writer with Proverbs 31 Ministries to offer grounded, compassionate insights for women who carry too much—and rest too little.

Take a deep breath, press play, and give yourself permission to stop striving and start receiving the rest your body and soul actually need.

Parenting doesn't end when your kids become adults—and neither does the complicated relationship we have with shame as parents. In this powerful conversation, I’m joined by family coach, former educator, and licensed mental health expert Anastasia Arauz to explore how shame weaves its way into our parenting, our family dynamics, and even into the lives of our adult children.

Anastasia brings her rich background in counseling, play therapy, and education to help us uncover the hidden ways shame impacts how we show up as parents—and more importantly, what we can do about it. Her work empowers moms to lead their families with love, clarity, and resilience, while also prioritizing their own well-being.

In this episode, we discuss: * How shame sneaks into your parenting even when you "know better" * The connection between shame and unhealthy family dynamics * Why our unhealed shame can unintentionally burden our children * Practical steps to parent from a place of confidence instead of fear * Strategies to break cycles of guilt, perfectionism, and self-criticism in parenting

Whether your children are toddlers, teenagers, or fully grown adults, it's never too late to examine how shame is operating in your family—and to make powerful shifts toward healthier, more joyful relationships.

In this episode, we dive deep into the body’s role in healing with Kate, a physical therapist, author, and embodied freedom and transformation coach. Kate specializes in helping service-driven women who feel like they're falling apart—overwhelmed, exhausted, and trapped in cycles of chronic anxiety, pain, and fatigue.

We also unpacked how shame shapes our identity and how the unhealed stress and trauma we carry doesn’t just affect us—it ripples into our relationships. When we stay disconnected from our bodies, we struggle to show up fully for ourselves and others. But when we begin to listen, release, and heal, we open the door to deeper connection, compassion, and freedom.

With a background in neuro and pain science, she offers a powerful lens into how stress and trauma are held in the body—and how releasing them can create real transformation. We talked about what it means to come back to your body, how physical tension reflects emotional holding, and she even guided me through some surprising exercises to uncover what I’ve been carrying.

This conversation is a reminder that healing isn’t just a mental process. It’s physical. It’s embodied. And it’s deeply personal.

We talk about all your other relationships on this podcast, but we've never addressed your relationship with food. It's time.

Many, if not most American women have a dysfunctional relationship with food. I teamed up with Courtney Gray and had a wonderful conversation about how changing your relationship with food can create weightless that remains for a lifetime.

About Courtney Gray:

Courtney Gray is a Body and Life coach for women who want to lose weight permanently. In her 1:1 coaching program she uses mindset and strategy, and her clients lose weight without deprivation and giving up all the foods they love. She helps them understand why they turn to foods they know don't serve them, and teaches them to eat better consistently, not perfectly.

She believes something amazing happens when women decide how they want to look and feel in their body and then they start living in a way that supports that vision.

Courtney’s coaching centers around mindset and self-mage. She believes that a person’s thoughts create their habits and daily routines, which create the results in their life. Courtney believes that when women learn how to think intentionally and choose what they want to believe, their life uplevels in every way.

When it comes to helping her clients lose weight for the last time, Courtney believes it is an exciting, loving, and transformational process.

We all lie. Whether it’s the little “white” seemingly insignificant ones or the really big, shameful deceits, we are all guilty of not being completely honest all of the time. As I continue to seek deeper wisdom regarding women, our relationship with ourselves, others and God, I have done a deep dive into trying to understand the unique types of deception that seem more prevalent in women than in men. Why? Because I want you to understand yourself more. Because I want to talk about the real things- the things we don’t often talk about. Because when you understand yourself better, you show up healthier for yourself and your relationships. I brought on Susan Barash, who is a journalist and author on my podcast and we had a great conversation about the many societal influences that have shaped the ways that we women choose to tell the truth or not. I think it’s a phenomenal conversation that solves nothing except inciting you to possibly look at your motivation for not being truthful and examine if there are places for you to heal and grow so that you can be a woman of honor and truth.

If you are in a relationship with a narcissist, all of the conventional advice you are likely to get is to figure out how to get OUT of the relationship.

That is so much easier said than done. And that advice is not for everyone. There are plenty of valid reasons why people choose to stay in a relationship with a narcissist.

In this episode, I provide some hope for health in your life even if you choose to stay. You may be staying because you are trauma bonded, another topic for another day. You may be staying because you feel it's your ethical and moral obligation, you want to keep your family intact, you may be staying for now because you don't feel it's even feasible to leave financially. You may be staying because you are terrified of leaving. All of your reasons are valid and it's okay.

In this episode, I address:

  1. Why some people choose to stay

  2. How to respond to the manipulation tactics in a way that doesn’t keep you engaged.

  3. The real effects on your body (and psyche) of staying.

  4. How to counteract the negative effects and stay healthy when you’re in a relationship with a narcissist.

Often, when we think of narcissism, we think of a guy who is arrogant, seeks admiration, talks and thinks of only himself and lacks empathy or care. This is a classic view that causes many women to overlook what's going on in their relationships, so I wanted to identify the 5 types of narcissism that might be happening so that you don't feel crazy if someone in your relationship doesn't quite fit the classic idea, but you know something's going on. In this episode, I expand on the five ways that narcissism can be exhibited are: 1. Overt 2. covert 3. antagonistic 4. communal 5. malignant. Narcissism is growing in our society. We simply have more narcissists than we did 50 years ago and as a result it is very likely that you have come in contact with or are in a relationship with one. It’s even more important to note that we all - yes, every one of us have traits of narcissism, which is really just an Ego State. That can make understanding it even more confusing. because everyone is diagnosing those with whom they may be in conflict with- and especially their Exes, it’s important to get an idea of what is NOT narcissism. In this episode, I give a run down of what a narcissist is and give 9 examples of common misconceptions of behaviors that do not necessarily indicate narcissism. I also explain why trying to figure out it if you are in a relationship with a narcissist is the biggest waste of time and what you should do instead.

I’m guessing you’ve heard this term before. In case you haven't, it's a term usually associated with the workplace. Quiet quitting describes what happens when dissatisfied workers start doing the bare minimum of their job requirements, sometimes while looking for another job or just because they have given up. They aren’t ready to leave their position, they are not trying to climb the corporate ladder at a job they hate, but they aren’t going to quit either. ⁣

In the context of a relationship, quiet quitting refers to those who don’t necessarily want to break up, and they certainly don’t want to be the one to do the breaking up, but they are dissatisfied in the relationship and have settled into going through the motions without any real motivation to make the relationship better or to ensure it’s continuation. ⁣

I share nine signs that you are quiet quitting and how you can respond if you notice your partner is quiet quitting the relationship. ⁣

Much of your daily life is spent doing shallow work- the everyday maintenance of life. This is necessary and good work, but it is not your most important work.

In accomplishing shallow tasks, you feel like you're getting a lot done and you are, but shallow work can easily take over your entire life. Years pass, without a realization that you are putting out surface fires.

Deep work is described as “activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit.”

In this episode, I discuss Cal Newton's concept of Deep Work and provide tips on how you can integrate deep thinking in a busy life to increase health in your relationship with yourself and others.

This episode was inspired by an episode I did with this Grit and Grace Life podcast.

When the world feels like it’s going haywire, we can get so caught up in trying to find truth and we get so polarized in our non- essential beliefs that it rips families apart and relationships apart.

What I have learned is that there is only one truth in the world and there are only two things I know for sure. I share these in the episode today and encourage you to solidify your own.

When you feel overwhelmed by a world you can’t control, I give you a couple of things you can do to increase your peace and find purpose in your life.

Today, I dive into what true strength is and how we can attain it.

I hate talking about racism- let’s just get that straight.

This is a super raw episode where I talk about my own uncomfortable feelings when I have to talk about racism.

Talking about race with people who are different from you can be painful, awkward and uncomfortable, but it’s necessary and doable.

We need the kind of conversations that dig deep down into the core of our belief systems. We need to ask ourselves, “What kind of world and community do we want to live in?” If we want to have a future where everyone can do their best work, and live in a world where people are not afraid of people who are different, we need to talk about race with people who don’t look like us.

But it’s completely okay if it makes you uncomfortable

Sometimes you have something so big and so difficult in your life that only God can fix. But sometimes, God just doesn’t fix it and that can mess us up psychologically. We create negative self-talk around it that is so damaging to our mind and our soul. We've got to stop that. I don’t normally talk about God here but I felt compelled to speak about this and I’ve learned to follow that instinct when it appears. It’s easy to separate my work and my faith when it comes to my clients since the focus is on them but I can't make that separation in my speaking since that’s about me as much as it is about you.

Do you ever struggle with feeling like your self-care is really an excuse to be selfish? Do you have mom, wife or friend guilt when you aren’t being completely selfless? Women agonize so much over how their decisions are affecting other people in their lives in a way that men generally do not. Part of it comes from the fact that part of our feminine being is to be nurturers but the reality is that not caring enough about ourselves is unhealthy.

No-one wants to identify themselves as selfish and we have to take care of ourselves first to be able to be selfless. So, how do we balance it? In this episode, I explore the line between selfish and selfless with some easy tips to distinguish between the two.

This episode was fueled by two questions I received recently from podcast listeners that were very similar. I realized that if two different women were reaching out to me about the same topic, other people likely have similar questions.

Sometimes we truly choose to hold on to past hurts, but more often than not, we never properly dealt with them in the first place. In this episode, I discuss how to determine if a past hurt is truly in the past and what steps you need to take to move forward in health.

Did you know that "taking-care-of-it-all-ism" is a sign of co-dependence? You're probably telling yourself you do it all because you do it best, but it really may be more about the need to feel needed.

Today I'm holding up a mirror for all the women who assume that you can't be strong and be co-dependent. Even though most people view co-dependence as a sign of weakness, the truth is that you can be otherwise strong and independent and completely co-dependent in your relationship.  If you recognize yourself in any of the descriptions I'm sharing today, it's time to take some action and change the dynamics of your co-dependent relationship. You've got this!

In this episode, I'm explaining what co-dependency is, giving you some questions to help you figure out whether you may be a co-dependent and sharing how you can start to move from co-dependency to inter-dependence.

This episode is dedicated to Bethany Rutledge.

Bethany connected with me months ago and I was originally going to have her on the show to discuss today’s topic.

Bethany was the author of Courage to Try, a USAT-certified coach, a mama of twin boys, and a triathlete. I recently finished reading her book and both it and her story so encouraging.

Bethany dedicated her life to helping women develop courage and, even though I’m a bit melancholy in this episode, I felt I owed it to her to carry on with our plan to talk about the having the courage to try.

I really like the title of this episode, but I know not everyone else will. I know this because I’ve received some criticism in the past saying that my podcast is anti-feminist, but I’m not anti-anything except hate. While I have said in the past that I’m not a feminist, I know I don’t need to be in order to believe in the immense strength and inherent equality of women. So, even if the title of this episode isn’t your favorite, I encourage you to still listen to the episode as it’s my goal to support and lift up every woman.

In this episode, I provide some guidance on how a strong woman can support her man without losing herself in the process.

I know from my years of working as a therapist, that many women are not strong and sometimes we lie to ourselves that there is strength in our sacrifice, but sometimes that’s an excuse to keep doing the easy thing. Strength can be built, but it must be intentionally built and this is exactly what I help women do.

It's not my aim for women to strive for strength that rivals that of a man but to instead embrace the strength that is inherently within us as women.

In this episode, I share twenty traits found in research to be most consistent with women who demonstrate strength.

Immaturity in our lives can cost us, ladies. The general way of thinking is that as we age, we mature. NOT TRUE. As we age, we age. When we work on ourselves and grow from life experiences, we mature. Not everyone does and you may be shocked to find that there are areas that you still need to grow in maturity.

Some of the things I address in this podcast might make you say “ouch”. That just means that’s the area you need to work on.

The reality is that you can be grown in some areas and immature in others. And sometimes you can be mature in an area and something will trigger you and you can fall back into immaturity. The goal is to move forward. If you are recognizing it and correcting it, you are moving forward. So, let this episode be a little bit of a wake-up call and take a listen to these eight signs that you need to grow up.

Not only is Emily the mother to a five-year-old girl that she classifies as a “spitfire,” but, when she was in her mid-20’s, Emily was tasked with raising her two teenage god-children after their mother passed, and she is also the step-mother to three children; one of which suffered a traumatic injury that left him with permanent brain damage. So, it’s safe to say Emily has some special experience when it comes to raising kids.

In this episode, Emily discusses how her definition of raising maverick children has to do with cattle, why she wants her children to “appear to conform” instead of actually conforming to what society expects of them, the four pillars of being a maverick, how helicopter parenting is preventing you from raising a maverick, the messages we’re sending our kids when we micro-manage them, the importance of not projecting your emotions onto your children or telling them what they should be feeling, what free-range parenting means and her tips for becoming more of a free-range parent, why we need to stop judging other mothers, and so much more!

Psychologists have theorized various stages of development and what experiences and tasks should be accomplished in each stage in order to have a healthy psychological life. Most of these theories apply to males and today I talk about the seasons of a woman’s life and how you can hyper focus on your season to get the most out of your life.

Do you feel that work/life balance is not possible? Guess what? Balance IS possible and Jenny Stemmerman of YourLifeRocks.com helps us figure out how to reframe balance and make it work even in the midst of the beautiful chaos that is our life.

Define what balance looks like to you with the 8 pillars that make up your life (faith, marriage, parenting, health, career, home, finances, fun/friends). You have to define it for yourself and not anyone else.

Set goals in all areas for a 90 day period. Avoid all or nothing thinking and look for small wins that move you forward, not necessary "arrive" where you want to be.

Keep in mind that stress is the tension point between reality and expectation. We can't always control the reality, but we can the expectation.

Take an inventory of where you are in the 8 areas and identify what areas are priorities either by pain or neglect. Keep in mind that if you have been ignoring something for a long time, you might be numb to the pain. That doesn't mean it's healthy to keep neglecting it.

Actions you can take to create more balance (however you define it):

  1. Plan ahead and start weekly planning. I have a free course around this called Weekly Success Planning. Look at all areas of life and what you can do to give energy to those areas by being proactive.
  2. Focus on driving results in one area at a time....maybe just one a week.
  3. Build systems and habits-SOP's to keep the positive traction you are making. It requires energy to find what works for you but it is worth it.
