What does being FLI mean to you? This short episode introduces you to the stories of some incredible first-generation college students from some of the most prestigious universities in the United States. We all came from different backgrounds, we are distinct and unique, and we have taken different paths, but we are united by the FLI family!!
First-generation students provide an important and necessary contribution to our university campuses; their stories and their drive will change how we understand the world. Monica Ramirez is the founder of Justice for Migrant Women and the co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas. She authored the “Dear Sisters” letter addressed to women in the entertainment industry, sparking the creation of the TIME’S UP Movement. Monica will be sharing her perspective on women empowerment and feminism, along with discussing strategies for fighting gender-based sexual harassment and achieving gender equity across industries.
Former Congressman, and current director of the non-partisan Cornell University Institute of Politics and Global Affairs in New York City, Steve Israel is here to talk about his perspective on the Democratic Nominee Race and the debates. Congressman Israel left Capitol Hill unindicted and undefeated as the former representative for New York’s second congressional district up until the year 2013 and then New York’s 3rd congressional district representative until his retirement from congress in 2017, during the years 2011 to 2015 he chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
