Are you living like your 2000 years overdue for an upgrade?
The problem of the Old Covenant:
· The law reveals the heart of God to us (our values are on display in our rules).
· It’s an act of love and kindness that God lays out the best life for us.
· It exposes when we fail so that we can turn back to God.
· The law can’t save us.
The power of the New Covenant:
· The new cov can save you. It has the power to save you from sin.
· This new covenant is eternal. It will never by replaced. It never fades.
· The new covenant means the spirit works in us to change us to be more like Christ.
Indicators that we may be living as if we are under the Old Covenant:
Defending, comparing, justifying are indicators of our desire to define our own righteousness.
How to upgrade to new covenant living: don’t look at the law … look at Jesus and behold his glory, his beauty. The spirit enables us to see Christ in all his glory.
2 Corinthians 2:12-17
- God’s mission is our mission v. 14, Habakkuk 2
a. We are the aroma of Christ v. 15
b. God is on a mission to fill the earth with all his glory
c. God put the church on this earth to accomplish his mission
d. As we grow in Christ our character becomes more like the character of Christ and the invisible Christ becomes visible. Then God will use his found children to rescue his lost children.
- There is only one way to participate in this mission
a. To participate in God’s mission we must embrace our weakness
i. God triumphs over our weakness
ii. God triumphs through our weakness
b. We are the aroma of Christ
How does God work through us, the church, during this divisive time?
· when we confess our sin, we point to God’s glory
· when we defer to each other
· when we don’t demand our rights
· when we choose not to make a name for ourselves
· when we find more joy in sharing stories of God’s in our lives
· when we tell the Christ is greater than all of our sufferings
- We are sufficient for this mission.
a. Who is sufficient for these things? v. 16
b. The answer: YOU ARE! – Christ has made you sufficient to bring life to this dead world.

Hard times teach us to receive encouragement from God so that we can give that encouragement to others.
Consider these two questions:
- When people are around us discouraged or encouraged or somewhere in the middle?
- What would your life be like if Jesus had been unwilling to go to the cross where he was without any encouragement from his heavenly father?

1. A bad friend makes you foolish; a good friend makes you wise.
- Proverbs 12:26. One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
- Proverbs 13:20. Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
2. A bad friend is fickle; a good friend is faithful.
- Proverbs 19:4. Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend.
- Proverbs 20:6. Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?
- Proverbs 17:17. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
- Proverbs 18:24. A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
3. A bad friend is emotionally disconnected from you; a good friend is emotionally connected to you.

I. You can’t enjoy the good life if the good life is your goal in life.
II. You can’t enjoy the good life if you think you can earn it.
III. You can’t enjoy the good life if you’re not willing to work hard.
- First discipline, get rid of the idea that God doesn’t delight in you…because he does.
- Second discipline, get rid of the idea that you can figure out life by yourself—because you can’t.
- Third discipline: get rid of the idea that you can trust in yourself…because you can’t—you’re not God.
IV. You can’t enjoy the good life if you want the good life more than you want God.

I. What Is a Fool?
Proverbs 28:26. “Whoever trusts in his own mind is a fool.”
II. How Do I Know if I Am a Fool?
- First, by remembering that we are never completely free from foolishness in this life.
Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.
- Second, by looking at the different kinds of fools in the Bible.
The Simple OnesProverbs 14:15 The simple believes everything….Proverbs 22:3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.
The FoolsProverbs 15:5 A fool despises his father’s instruction.
The ScoffersProverbs 9:7 Whoever corrects a scoffer gets himself abuse, and he who reproves a wicked man incurs injury.Proverbs 9:8 Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you….III. How Does a Fool Become Wise?Proverbs 1:24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded

Cynthia Heimel: I pity celebrities, no I really do—Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Barbara Streisand, were once perfectly pleasant human beings. But now their wrath is awful.
Cynthia Heimel: You see Sly, Bruce, and Barbara wanted fame. They worked, they pushed and the morning after each of them became famous they wanted to take an overdose. Because that giant thing they were striving for, that fame thing that was going to make everything OK, that was going to make their lives bearable, that was going to provide them with personal fulfillment and happiness had happened and they were still them. The disillusionment turned them howling and insufferable.
Proverbs 1:33 but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster
