Philip Mallon is back for another interview.

In this interview, Philip talks about his work as a volunteer STEM educator and mentor. Philip is a prolific Maker, with a wide range of technology interests. What I find fascinating about him, is that Philip is always ready and keen to teach everything he learns.

Now in retirement after a long career as an engineer, in which he designed and build road-building robots, custom computers, and automated road safety systems, Philip is now helping others learn tech.

He is active in the community by teaching kids with special needs, kids in school, and "kids" of a certain age as a mentor in the University of the Third Age (U3a).

What joins all of those activities is Philip's passion for technology and education.

I had this conversation with Jon Evans on 16 February 2021. Jon answered questions relating to the upcoming KiCad 6.0 released.

Questions asked:

  1. What is your current estimate of when KiCad 6.0 will be published?
  2. Now that we have curved traces, what’s next?
  3. What is the outlook for the Netlist file? Consider the ability to use it as an import file for VHDL/Verilog applications.
  4. Regarding the new bus features, It would be nice to have a signal group in a bus (say, D[15..0]) where the schematic connections are late binding based on decisions made while routing the board. This could be very useful in MCU or FPGA applications and their connections to SRAM, where it does not matter which data bit on the memory bus is connected to a bit on the SRAM. Is this possible (or will be)?
  5. How good are KiCad 6 import tools? In my testing, I found that importing from Eagle is marginally useful. Is the end-goal to be able to reliably import Eagle projects, or just to provide a first step (with the user having to fix what was imported)?
  6. About the new file format, S-Expressions notation. It is now used for the schematic, layout, symbols, and footprints. Is work complete?
  7. Can you explain how symbols and footprints used in a project are embedded in the schematic and footprint files? What does that means for sharing projects with collaborators?
  8. Can you tell us about the status of the python scripting console? What are some typical tasks that people could use the console for? I notice that the console is only available for Pcbnew.
  9. Can you tell us about the status of the plugin system? What are some of your favourite plugins? (I also notice that it is only available to Pcbnew, any plans to add it to Eeschema)? Although there are many good plugins available, I am hesitant to use them because I don’t know how good they are in terms of quality. Do you see a plugin ecosystem developing, and if yes, is it possible to setup some kind of certification process and a central repository that will promote quality plugins for KiCad (even paid but open-source)?
  10. There will be any kind of improvement on the drawing tools? For example commands like trim, some kind of snap, offsets or parametric constraints between lines and components distances? any plans for autorouting?
  11. Why did KiCad select S-Expression (Old LISP format) for file format instead of JSON or YAML or something else that is more common?
  12. When setting up bord house technology preferences like minimum track with etc: Will KiCad 6 finally have an import-export technology file? Now you can only import settings from a previous project/board.

JLD's story is similar among self-made successful entrepreneurs: After a struggle, he came up with an idea for a media product and service that fills a need in people's lives. He then realized that he did not have the skills and knowledge to pull this off, so he started to teach himself. He learned from books, from videos, but that wasn't enough.

Self-education is the key, but there is nothing like learning from the best, and that's what John Lee did. He accelerated his education with the help of mentors and applied his learnings on the job.

Jon is an electrical engineer and open-source software developer based in Boston, MA. He has eight years of experience designing electronics and firmware for industrial and consumer products, most recently in the 3D printing industry.

Since around 2011, Jon has been designing electronics and firmware for industrial and consumer products, and most recently in the 3D printing industry.

He has been a contributor to the KiCad EDA project since 2016 and a member of the lead developer team since 2018. He has also created a number of smaller open-source projects related to LED art installations.

In this episode, Dr. Peter Dalmaris talks with Ranveig Strøm.

Ranveig joined the Knowledge Transfer group of CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) as an administrative student in February 2017, working in marketing and communication.

Since February 2018 she is responsible for CERN’s entrepreneurship activities.

Ranveig works to foster a culture of entrepreneurship at the Laboratory and to assist CERN personnel wanting to create companies.

With a strong interest in technology management and new business development, she has completed an MSc from the NTNU School of Entrepreneurship in Norway, for which she wrote her thesis while at CERN.

Ranveig Strøm, Entrepreneurship Development Officer at CERN Knowledge Transfer Group, and Dr. Peter Dalmaris, author of Maker Education Revolution Ranveig has also completed courses at UC Berkeley, doing a deep dive into the Silicon Valley start-up scene, while also being a business development intern for a start-up in San Francisco.

In the past, Ranveig has been involved in several start-ups, giving her hands-on experience in business development, as well as holding positions in various entrepreneurship oriented organizations.

Specifically, she has worked as an entrepreneurial supervisor for students with business ideas, as project manager for a handful of EIT Climate-KIC programs and also as a board member of Start Norway.

In this episode, Dr. Peter Dalmaris talks with Dr. Chris Matthews.

Dr. Chris Matthews, a Noonuccal man, is passionate about connecting culture and mathematics, having developed a method of teaching maths to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through dance and story.

He teaches students to bring maths to life by crafting stories in which characters take actions that add, subtract, or divide.

As Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mathematics Alliance (ATSIMA), Dr. Matthews also organizes camps and conferences designed to promote Indigenous participation in STEM and to support mathematics outcomes for Indigenous students.

Dr. Matthews highlights the importance of engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in mathematics to ensure they are prepared for life beyond school. “Maths is one of those subjects that is a gatekeeper to jobs, it gives access to other opportunities in life, and it’s important for every student,” said Dr. Matthews.

In this episode, Peter Dalmaris (that’s me!) talks with Zafar Iqbal, aka “Zaf”.

Zaf studied Engineering & Computer Science at Oriel College in Oxford, and Communication Design at Central Saint Martins in London.

He has worked for more than 20 years as a programmer in the United Kingdom and Greece, both for large private companies such as ZDNet/CNET and for top academic institutions, such as the National Technical University of Athens.

He currently creates software tools for scientists who work on projects for the European Space Agency.

His areas of expertise include cyber-physical hardware and software systems with an emphasis on robust, modular, secure and scalable software components, “phygital” experiences, image, and video processing, internet applications, and content management systems.

Zaf also has extensive maker experience, participating in Maker Faires in New York, Rome, and Athens.

Zaf has used his programming skills on a varied number of science and art projects and stage performances, and in 2016 he was included in the European Top 50 Makers list.

In my conversation with Zaf, we talked about his projects and challenges, where he often finds himself in “un-documented” territory. Zaf is known for not being afraid to go where he has not gone before as a maker. We discussed his experiences of being an exhibitor in three Maker Faires, Prime numbers, the Turing Machine and how he created his version of the machine based on the Arduino. We also talked about Arduino-powered video art, and much more.

In this first part of the conversation, Zaf talks about his background as a programmer and maker. He talks about his approach to programming in multiple languages, his software designs, and some of his projects.

In this episode, Peter Dalmaris (that’s me!) talks with Richard Park.

Richard has been teaching full time for twenty years. He currently teaches college-level Network Engineering and is creating an “IoT Explorations” course for the coming school year.

Richard also taught Secondary Technology Education, concurrently, for eleven years. In these venues, the topics included coding, operating systems, electronics, and multimedia in addition to networking.

Prior to his full-time teaching career, Richard was a Cisco Systems Network Academy Area Manager, Apple Computer Systems Engineer, Texas Instruments Technical Instructor, and an IBM Mainframe Systems Field Engineer.

At Apple Computer, he designed and implemented the technology infrastructure for the Apple Market Center, a predecessor to today’s Apple Stores, and co-authored the “Apple ][ Primer”, Apple’s first classroom teacher training manual.

Richard holds AAS, BS, and MS degrees in Electronics Technology, Radio and Television Journalism, and Education from Southern Illinois University, and Texas A&M University.

In my conversation with Richard, we touched on a wide array of topics drawing mostly from his vast experience. He worked at Apple Computer for 20 years, at a time where networks were open and unencrypted, and witnessed first hand Apple’s foray into education, and he wrote the Apple ][ Primer, one of the first programming guides for teachers. This discussion reminded me of my first computer, an Apple //e with 128KBytes of RAM.

Richard was one of the first users of Visicalc, one of the first visual spreadsheet programs for the Apple ][ and defined much of how modern spreadsheets work. This knowledge was very useful when he worked at Texas Instruments and essentially revolutionized job costing.

We discussed Richard’s work at the CISCO Academy where he teaches Network Engineering and the course he is developing at the moment, on IoT Fundamentals. In this course that Richard is designing, he combines a Raspberry Pi and Arduino to teach IoT concepts by gradually building an IoT application.

We also had a look at Richard’s adaptation of the Raspberry Pi Full Stack application, which is one of my favorite moments of the conversation.

We talked about Radio Shack, Bill Nye the Science Guy, Mr. Wizard, breadboarding, and, so much more.

In this episode, Dr. Peter Dalmaris (that’s me!) talks with Martin Zwigl.

Martin attended a technical school for mechanical engineering in Austria. However, he never worked as an engineer and instead, he became a Software Developer.

Earlier in life, Martin built many remote-controlled cars and planes. As a software developer, most of his work with electronics involves a lot of coding, which he considers an essential part of “making”.

Martin is relatively new to the world of the Arduino, but he has already produced several fun projects.

In our conversation, we explored many of these projects, and also looked at some very ambitious ideas for future projects.

In one of his projects, Martin used all of his skills, electronics, coding, and art, to build Light Gary, a colorful creature with a clock and a head that lights up.

In another project, with the help of Dario, a friend and electronics expert, he built a gadget that reminds him to drink his beer. The beer gadget consists of just 4 parts: a buzzer, an accelerometer, a clock, and a diode.

One of his current projects is Virtual City Windows, a system that consists of large high-definition video walls installed in cities around the world. These systems enable two-way communications between any two cities, giving people a view into life around the world.

Martin is also very much into virtual and augmented reality, and we spent some time looking into this exciting technology, including a headset that Martin is building.

In this episode, Dr. Peter Dalmaris talks with Alain Pannetrat.

Alain is the founder of OMZLO, a company that designs, manufactures and sells open-source hardware with a focus on wired IoT.

Alain also works as a product manager and researcher for the Cloud Security Alliance.

He previously worked as an IT expert for the French data protection authority (CNIL) and as a smartcard security consultant in the banking industry.

He holds a Ph.D. in applied cryptography but discovered a passion for electronics the day he bought his first Arduino UNO.

In my conversation with Alain Pannetrat, we discuss NoCAN, a platform that uses CAN bus to network dozens of Arduino nodes with a single wire.

NoCAN is a technology that is very interesting on its own, and I’ve spent a big bunch of the interview discussing it with Alain.

But apart from the technology, I was very interested in Alain’s experience in setting up a business around NoCAN, and running two Kickstarter campaigns.

In this episode, Peter Dalmaris talks with Wayne Stambaugh.

Wayne has been a developer for the KiCad project for over 12 years and the lead project developer for the last 6 years.

He is an electronics engineer with over 30 years of experience in electronics design and software development.

Wayne has done a little bit of everything during his career including digital, analog, and embedded design as well as embedded programming in assembly and C and desktop programming in C, C++, and Python.

In this interview, Wayne takes us back in time, to tell the story of KiCad’s early days, trials and tribulations.

Of course, we also discussed the future of KiCad. With CERN backing the project, as well as other organizations (like Wit, which now employs Wayne full time to work on KiCad as its leader), and thousands of people contributing donations, I expect KiCad to grow and became perhaps the best open-source PCB tool.

Wayne spoke about his experience at the recent first KiCad conference (KiCon) and the future of KiCad.

In this episode, Peter Dalmaris talks with George Katz.

George has been making things ever since he can remember. As a child, he used to make paper models of all kinds of things, until his parents bought him a 2-transistor radio kit. From that point, he was interested in all things electronic.

He studied electronics in high school and later completed his Degree in Computer Engineering from UNSW. He enjoyed the course because it combined electronics with software and so that computers would interact with the real world. There, he also became interested in robotics and built a number of research robots for his thesis and for the AI department for other students to use. After university, his day job was on developing software for various companies, but electronics remained his hobby.

About 13 years ago he saw an episode of MythBusters that featured water rockets. Searching online, he discovered a whole world of DIY makers that made rockets and posted instructions on how to do that. George talked to father, and within 3 hours, they had built a launcher and launched their first rocket in the backyard. From that point on, the whole family was hooked on building ever more complex and higher performing rockets. They also joined the local rocketry club (NSWRA) which opened a whole new world of like-minded individuals with a lot of experience in the field to learn from.

To this day, George and his family still very much enjoy the engineering challenge of building and flying rockets. He uses his electronics knowledge for rocketry payloads and ground launch equipment. Though he occasionally does fly solid propellant rockets, his passion still is building water rockets. Both of George’s teenage boys are also a great help with all aspects of the hobby.

George shares his experiences as much as possible online and runs a website with instructional videos as well as launch and experiment reports. The website contains many of the hard to find details about water rockets so that others can learn from his successes and mistakes the same way people shared their knowledge with him when he started out.

Her research involves the development of robotic systems to provide assistance and increase independence for people with disabilities.

She is developing several prototype robotic systems that will support transferring, repositioning, and personal care, with a focus on accessible user interfaces for control that are feasible for persons with severe disabilities (and this is the main topic of our discussion in this episode).

In this episode, Peter and Marcus talk with Doonie aka Geoffrey Benton.

Geoffrey was born in Frankston in 1948 when they still shoed horses in the stables near the railway station. Geoffrey attended Tech school and became an apprentice as a plastic die-maker/toolmaker.

He worked as a maintenance fitter and in later life he became a policeman, then a truck driver and has also owned several small businesses.

He retired in 2012 and went on to discover a range of activities that keep him interested and, sometimes, frustrated! These include filmmaking, short story writing, making model boats and generally beavering away in his shed for days at a time. He recently discovered the joys and frustrations of learning how to use a laser cutter and has since filled the house with tiny wooden boxes.

Then, he was bitten by the electronics bug in the form of Arduino and is now trying to combine all of his skills to one end.

He has had a lifetime love affair with motorcycles including building, restoring, racing, and touring. In the shed at the moment is a home-built 920cc V twin solo and a 1500cc Kawasaki V twin with a sidecar and trailer.

Geoffrey lives in country Victoria with his wife and two cats.

Marc earned his Ph.D. in Science on scholarship with the CSIRO, which provided an apprenticeship in research, management, professional communication, and a solid background in the understanding of science. Steve is the Associate Pastor of LIFE Foursquare Church in Decatur, Illinois, USA.

He also teaches part-time at Decatur Christian School in Forsyth, Illinois. Steve has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mission Education from North Central University in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1984). He has over 30 years of teaching experience in various settings, including teaching various math and computer-related subjects.

Since 2012, Steve has operated a light and sound Christmas display with over 40,000 lights on more than 300 networked circuits syncopated with Christmas music and broadcast on a low-power transmitter for people to enjoy. The show runs every night in December and is a special holiday event for hundreds of families in the community.

The private school where Steve teaches is expanding its curriculum to include STEM subjects, including Micro-controllers, Robotics, and Programming. Steve is creating the curriculum for the “Arduino Masters” class by gleaning from various sources and materials.

He started in industrial automation and then transitioning to application development.

Outside of development James worked as engineering team lead and management in small-medium sized companies. He worked predominantly with start-ups and small companies, and has spent considerable time abroad (France, China, India), and always connected to the EduTech space. James is skilled in programming for various devices: mobile, Linux, and microcontrollers. He is experienced at turning product ideas into reality and managing mixed developer teams.

James can speak fluent French, which he has taught himself.

He is also one of the organizers of Ozberry, perhaps Australia's largest Raspberry Pi and Maker-related meetup.

Nigel is the founder of AKL Mini-makers. Started in 2015, AKL Mini-Makers' delivers parent-led technology workshops for Primary and Intermediate school-age children. Nigel and other AKL Mini-Makers' members teach design thinking, and maker culture skills, for prototyping – electronics, coding, digital design and 3d printing. The weekly workshops run weekly workshops started in February 2016, are financially supported by Parents, and partnered with Auckland Council and AUT (the Auckland University of Technology). They aim to grow with the children (currently 11-years old) until they’re old enough to become junior tutors – a wider tutor base enabling an increase in class numbers.

Peter is the manager of Education and Digital Learning for Sydney’s Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences. He leads program direction and delivery for the Museum’s school learning experiences including Thinkspace and The Mars Lab, coding and game design. He is a learning leader for MAAS, a lean startup approach that involves staging punk learning ‘design experiments’ in partnership with young people and school educators or the co-design of bespoke learning experiments.

He initiated Sydney’s first Mini-Maker Faire back in 2014, which has since evolved into an annual event. He has a Master of Teaching, Graduate Diploma in Music Therapy, Bachelor of Arts. Peter’s background is performing and community arts. Back in the day, as performer and musician, he toured nationally and internationally with Castanet Club, including the Edinburgh Arts Festival Fringe, and nationally with theatre and cabaret shows. Currently, Peter sings tenor in Sydney gospel choir Cafe of the Gate of Salvation.

In this episode, Dr. Peter Dalmaris and Marcus Schappi talk with Lael Grant.

Lael is computer programming teacher at Barker College, based in the Sydney suburb of Hornsby, in Australia.

At the College, Lael is the team coordinator and part of the mentor team of the Barker Redbacks. The Redbacks have established themselves as one of the leading Robotics teams in Australia. When Lael is not planning the future of robotics and STEM education at Barker, he teaches programming as a part of the Computer Science faculty.

We interviewed Lael and two student members of the Redback team at the Barker College campus. The result is a two-part episode in which we discuss the importance of using robotics as a vehicle to develop multiple skill sets and attitudes in students.

In this first episode, Lael talks about Robotics education at Barker College and the benefits of cooperative competition.

In the second episode, two student members of the Redbacks team (one current and one alumni) give us a student perspective of what team membership is like for them, and how it has helped them develop technical, personal and interpersonal skills. Saskia, a current member and one of the Team Captains, is in Year 11. And Alastair is a team alumnus and now studying Engineering.

I'll take one more minute in this introduction to give you some background on the Redbacks Robotics team.

The team grew from a small number of students in 2014 through to their successes in 2017. In 2017 the team competed in Australia and around the globe in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) and the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC). The team won the most Regionals of any team in FRC and were finalists in their Division at Championships.

Her kids' channel, Tinkertime is all about experimenting, pulling things apart and not being afraid to make mistakes. While in education, Naomi was Runner Up Most Outstanding New Teacher awarded by the NSW Teachers Guild in 2009. In this episode of Stemiverse, Dr. Peter Dalmaris and Marcus Schappi talk with Philip Mallon.

Starting at the age of 9, Philip built a radio crystal set, and this became the foundation for an interest in electronics. Phillip's path has given him countless opportunities to learn and to teach during the last forty years.

As a cadet with the NSW Department of Public Works, he studied Science and Technology at the University of Sydney. This was followed by further studies in the UK and a Master's degree in Engineering Science at the University of NSW. Philip applied his new knowledge in biomedical engineering to providing electromedical equipment for the new Westmead Hospital. He worked on the first electronic toll system for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and was the control systems engineer on the Accelerated Loading Facility.

Philip helped provide the first computer systems engineering labs at UTS and was employed there as both engineering manager and an academic to provide both teaching and practical engineering skills for students.

While at UTS Philip was a director for Autism Australia now Aspect and took an interest in supporting schools for Autistic children.

At the RTA Philip was engaged in Intelligent Transport Systems Projects (ITS) including the flashing lights at all schools zones in NSW, road safety projects including the Lithgow black ice detection project, managed motorways, the new T-Way bus systems for Sydney and structural health and security monitoring projects including monitoring the Sydney Harbour Bridge for security threats.

Now retired, Philip is an active maker and mentor to other makers at the University of the Third Age ( u3a) and various Sydney Meetups including ozBerry, Sydney Robotics and Coding, and Hack Sounds.

Philip's maker projects involve music, robotics, home automation, environmental monitoring, software engineering, and electronics and he is interested in how people with disabilities such as autism and retired seniors can be creative as makers.

Philip exhibited his maker projects at the Sydney mini-maker fair last year. He is an alpha tester for new Seeed Products including reSpeaker and won two of their design competitions using reSpeaker and WioLink.

In the next hour or so, Peter and Marcus explore Philip's amazing engineering and learning experiences, and it is fascinating!
